How to Visit Stockholm on a Budget in 2025

"I note that the Museum of Medieval Stockholm is listed among free/discounted museums, but it is currently closed for relocation." - Matthew Kepnes

I was there couple of years ago, as I can see now it is temporarily closed. Wondering if it means renovation and improvements - would be excited to see more. We had an amazing visit already back then. Free entry, great expositions, miniatures and information presented in an interesting way. Great location, right in the centre of Stockholm. Will be keeping an eye on the opening dates. Would love to come back.

This kind of hidden museum tells the early story of Stockholm, and you can se the remains of the first city wall, which was actually not discovered until the end of the 20th century. In the museum, you can see a lot of exciting displays, and there are things for kids as well. Best of all, the museum is free, and you can store your luggage for free as well. In order to find the entrance, you actually have to walk around the Parliament and then enter from the basement. Visited with my brother and my teenage daughter. They too found it interesting.

A great museum that’s also great for kids. A very cool display of historical items incorporated into an actual archaeological site. Recreated medieval structures blend with unearthed walls and relics. Lots of interactive pieces and plenty of space for roaming and exploring. Very educational and great signage.

First of all they have a free entry. I visited this museum on a Sunday. There was no wait time. There was a free guided tour at 2 in English. It was great to know the history and I really liked how people of the city came forward and saved the part of history. They have parts of old city wall. They reconstructed the looks of the old city. It was really nice to see all those things along with the old items found from that era.

Not a museum in its current form – misleading description This is not a museum at the moment. The website gives the impression of a full exhibition on medieval clothing, but in reality, it’s just two mannequins in simple dresses squeezed against a wall inside a tiny 3x3m gift shop located in a church space. While admission is free, it’s still not worth a visit unless you happen to walk by. The website should clearly state that there is no real exhibition and that only the shop is open. They really should not be allowed to call this a museum. Just because a shop happens to display a couple of historical items doesn’t make it one. It’s misleading and disappointing for visitors expecting an actual museum experience.

Stumbled across this museum as we were walking near the park in front of Parliament, and very happy we did! It's free admission, and you probably need about 45mins, which is the perfect size museum for me. Inside you'll find uncovered medieval artifacts of Stockholm from hundreds of years ago, which gives you a good sense of how much life has truly changed. Would definitely recommend a visit!

Museum is free for all and is absolutely fascinating. If you want to understand the cultural heritage of Stockholm and Gamla Stan especially, then this is the place to go definitely. It gives you an in depth understanding of what Stockholm was like during the Medieval period and also a short and brief understanding of what life entailed during that period of time. It also offers a fascinating insight into people's homes in the past and how they lived as well as models of the old town and battles which took place. Definitely worth a visit and expect to spend between 1 to 2 hours in there!

If you're here to learn the history of Stockholm --for free, this is the place! Takes about 45-60 minutes. English text. Free toilets, free lockers. Information and artifacts are very well put together. They also built models of the town so you can really feel like you're going back in time through the streets of Stockholm.
