On the Grid : Storries Bakery

"After visiting any of the bars in this guide, you might find yourself having had one too many drinks, and a lack of sustenance. Storries pies have actually been known to save lives - they’re a thing of legend in Leith. Importantly, their unfathomable opening hours (they seem to be open all hours of the night) means a visit to this no-nonsense, old-school bakery is perfect for when the pubs close. Classic steak pie is always a safe bet for first timers. At around a bargain £1.50 per pie you should take one home too - a macaroni cheese pie, perhaps, or try the chicken curry one. Look for the little queue forming out the door and the bright yellow glow. You’re nearly home." - fourcolourblack

Whoever was working night shift on 31st October needs to learn the law & also be more aware of her customer service. I didn’t end up being served, I was firstly greeted with a demand to delete a tiny bit of footage I had of all her cakes from the outside window on the PUBLIC STREET. I explained to her i was on a public path when I recorded her cakes and can record whatever I want on a public street. (It was a quick clip of the pies then me & my sister were recording ourselves because we were starving and excited to have found a place that’s open at 4am) I explained nicely whatever I can see with my own eyes though on a public street I can record so she can’t say I’ve broke the law (like she was angrily saying I had done) She then wouldn’t serve me because I wouldn’t delete it. That was fine by me, because if she approached me with customer service and asked nicely then I would of deleted it but she was so angry & looked at me like I was a rodent who was in her Pie Shop at that point. This lady needs to learn the law & customer service. I can record her pies in the window on the public street and if she’s got a problem with that then find a new job because as I look on google reviews you can see other photos of people standing on the public street looking into the window and there’s shop workers in view because it’s a huge big fish tank window the pies are in. (Added the photo I’ve found just for reference that this pie shop or the lady picks & chooses who can take photos & who cannot. (Legally lol) Lady, learn firstly to talk nicely to your customers no matter the time of night. You were in the wrong & yes refuse my service all you want that’s your rights. But it’s also my rights to record whatever I want on a public street that’s within my eye sight. My sister who bought 2 sausage rolls ended up throwing them away because they tasted horrible. I’ll never be back at this pie shop and I would advise anyone to not film on the public street (leith walk) when she’s serving. Or she won’t serve you & treat you like a rat that’s crawled into her 24/7 pie shop. Think she needs to learn how much she’s been watched 24/7 on cameras right up leith walk the whole time she’s serving. Her attitude is what caused me not to delete it. Treat your customers nicely lady. She could have asked me nicely and not like I was scum of the earth when I didn’t even open my mouth to be served & she looked at me with such disgust. Learn the law! And look at your own google review photos….going to ask them to take it down? No didn’t think so. Have a nice pie life.

Went in to Storrie today, about 4pm. Asked for doner meat pie, 'hot or cold' woman asked, 'hot please' was my reply. OMG, how long had this thing been kept hot, not a few hour, DAYS by the look of it!! Straight in the bin! Never again will I be back to this bakery! Would of gave service more stars as woman was polite and cheery but knocked 2 stars off. She must of known how long that so called pie had been kept hot yet still sold it!

Really sad to be leaving this review, but needs must. A shadow of its former self. New owners have all but destroyed this place in a very short time. 3 pies and a sausage roll nearly £12 Curry pie was half filled, undercooked and was very much a budget supermarket tinned curry. Scotch pies were as close to being a scotch pie as I am to having walked on mars. Absolutely terrible. Sausage roll appeared and tasted store bought. Also noticed Costco muffins in their cabinet. Embarrassing when a “home bakers” buys in wholesale cakes. Gave most of it to my dog, even he wasn’t interested. Take something one and kill it in a matter of months. Shameful.

I'll try not to swear. What the actual... A macaroni pie and a steak pie £6.10!!! And the pie crust tasted like uncooked flour. If you are going to double the price of the pies at least try to make them tasty. What a disgrace. I have been buying from this shop for more than 20 years. It was never a Michelin experience but it was good and for the price great. Now I wonder why would anyone buy here anymore

Curious what their policy is about not heating up cold pies in the microwave right there at the counter? Maybe it just applies to “certain” people. Went in last night with a group of ten friends from out of town and the young man gruffly informed us most of the pies were cold. We asked him if he could please throw a bunch in the microwave right behind him and he refused. He seemed irrationally irritated and impatient with us even though we were all lined up politely waiting our turn. I asked why he couldn’t reheat them and he said he “just couldn’t right now” and looked past me down the line which was mostly our party. This felt very targeted and a personal choice on his part and hopefully not the policy of the shop. It felt even more strange given we were a large party, all non-white, clearly from out of town. He gave very different treatment to the locals who came in. Wholly unwelcoming in the evening. Maybe the spot is better in the daytime but we won’t be returning.

So disappointed in the pies. My favourite was always chicken curry, hadn’t had one in a while so went there today to get one. First thing they have massively increased the price to £3.30 a pie. Got it home and there was only a smear of filling, 3 bits of chicken in total and no rice. What has happened is it new owners? Anyway won’t be back, pies are now rubbish!

I keep passing Storries on the tram from work and knew it was an old school bakers so went in on Sunday and got 2 Scotch/ mince and 2 Steak pies. I’m not a huge fan of steak pies but they were brilliant as were the mince pies. Pastry was thick and crispy and they were filled with meat. Glad I went in. Brilliant scran

Google
Prices have increased pies are half full. Loved stories for years but no point in going back now. Sad to see it get to this way used to be the best bit of leith walk now seems they are relying on the name. Food has gotten worse as the prices have been put up. The staff are good but serving mid food. Dont know what has changed but needs to get back on to track

Yelp
The pies from this place are amazing. I'm a pretty greedy eater so I had both a chicken curry and an apple pie from Storries the other day which were both delicious. The bakery is hidden deep in Leith Walk and doesn't look much from the outside, but within it feels nice and warm with an enticing aroma circulating about the place. Their front counter has great array of cakes, sponges, doughnuts and intricate confectionary. They also make their own large steak pies for big family meals which are apparantly made only of the finest quality beef. The pastry on the pies which I tasted was really nice and buttery, whilst the fillings were delicious. They only cost about £1 each and I will definitely be going back for more soon!

Yelp
I love places which until you discover them you wiuld walk right past without a second glance. When you do discover them, you go in with a smirk on your face because you know what evrybody else is missing out on. Thats because the pies here are simply amazing - whether you order a small individual one which is the perfect lunch time snack, or one of thier larger family sized ones to use as a meal later on, you wont be dissapointed - the fillings are always beautiful and the pastry is lovely. They also do a range of sweet things, the usual that you would expect from a bakery, but again thier quality is very high.

Yelp
I must admit...the pies in here are amazing. It's not often you'll hear me saying I love pies (haha) but they are amazing here. It doesn't look like much to a passer-by, but keep an eye out for this charming little bakery! The prices are reasonable for the quality you get, so it's definitely worth a look!

Yelp
Can never choose between a steak, curry or Mac pie so I get all 3. And cheese scones. The cheese scones are something else. Must do in Edinburgh after a night out. Thankfully it's local to me. Love a storries.

Yelp
The baker shop. A storries steak pie is a thing of legend whether traditional or round pie. their sausage rolls are legend but the piece de resistance these days is their curry pie. a pie case stuffed full of curry and topped with rice under the pie top. For some reason their scones seem a little salty but i go there for the pies.

Yelp
Small and cheap bakery on Leith Walk - it always seems to be open at odd hrs so if you want your fresh rolls at 5am then this is the pace to come. I haven't tried the pies but have come here a lot for cakes - they are great, really good selection and tasty. Way better than the numerous Greggs that have sprung up around it.
