10 Best Museums in Amsterdam, From Quaint Canal Houses to Modern Graffiti Galleries | Condé Nast Traveler

"Graffiti fans, rejoice: Amsterdam now has a second museum devoted to street art—and it’s a doozy. STRAAT seeks out cutting-edge and emerging talent, with more than 130 artists from 32 countries represented in its 150-plus-strong collection. Occupying a colossal warehouse in the former shipbuilding area of NDSM, STRAAT has some 86,000 square feet of exhibition space inside, while outside, its façade is plastered in murals—including a huge kaleidoscope-like portrait of a smiling Anne Frank by Brazilian street art legend Eduardo Kobra." - Clodagh Kinsella, Jennifer Ceaser

STRAAT Museum — Museum Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Zoom out. What’s this place all about? Graffiti fans, rejoice: Amsterdam now has a second museum devoted to street art—and it’s a doozy. Occupying a colossal warehouse in the former shipbuilding area of NDSM, STRAAT has some 86,000 square feet of exhibition space inside, while outside, its façade is plastered in murals—including a huge kaleidoscope-like portrait of a smiling Anne Frank by Brazilian street art legend Eduardo Kobra. A museum's permanent collection is its defining feature: How was this one? Unlike the city’s Moco Museum , which focuses on established names like Banksy and Keith Haring, STRAAT seeks out cutting-edge and emerging talent, with more than 130 artists from 32 countries represented in its 150-plus-strong collection. Works fill the vast industrial space, hanging from steel beams and scattered around the cement floor. They are loosely divided into five somewhat abstract themes, but really, it’s worth just roaming around and stopping at whatever catches your eye. Exhibits keep us coming back. What can we expect? While the museum is mainly about the permanent collection, temporary shows in the mezzanine gallery showcase smaller-scale works by up-and-coming graffiti artists. Don’t miss the Panorama Terrace, which provides amazing views of the entire museum from high above. Do keep in mind that this is a giant industrial space and doesn’t have heating, so if it’s cold out, dress accordingly, as it will be just as chilly inside. What did you make of the crowd? Since it takes a bit of effort to get here, involving a 15-minute (free) ferry ride across the IJ River from Centraal Station, you can easily avoid the hordes of tourists that descend on the city center museums. Most visitors skew young and hip—not surprising given the subject matter and its location, in the heart of trendy NDSM. Weekends tend to be busier, but given the sheer size of the space, it never feels crowded. Ages 12 and under get free admission, and the big, colorful works are quite appealing to youngsters, but you’re unlikely to see many here. On the practical tip, how were the facilities? The warehouse is very much a raw, unfinished space, with the floor uneven in places, so you should tread somewhat carefully. As the collection is largely housed on one main floor, it shouldn’t be a problem for anyone with mobility issues; however, the Panorama Terrace isn’t wheelchair-accessible. Any guided tours worth trying? If you want to dive deeper into the stories behind the artwork, consider booking one of the weekend guided tours. They’re conducted by Alltournative , whose guides also provide graffiti and street art tours in Amsterdam. Gift shop: obligatory, inspiring—or skip it? Along with books, stickers, and typical gift shop fare, you can find original artworks and the artists’ own merch—so it’s worth a stop. Is the café worth a stop? The café, on the second and third floors, has a cool, industrial vibe, with exposed brick walls, huge windows, and steel girders. Any advice for the time- or attention-challenged? Even though the museum is large, the works themselves are, too. That means you can easily tour the space in about an hour. Just be sure to budget time for the 15-minute ferry ride back to Amsterdam Centraal." - Jennifer Ceaser

This Museum was a complete suprise to me, we went there without any expectation, and we had a great afternoon in this spectacular location full of really fine, creative street art. The organisation of the exhibition as an open space, the description of Art works and artists, every detail is made with love for art and passion, and the place emanates a peaceful, serene and inspiring athmosphere . The works exposed are beautiful and meaningful, I really recommend a visit. Don't go there in a hurry, it's so nice to look at the artworks from different perspectives !

The museum was one of the best street art museums I’ve ever visited. The selection of images and art objects was exceptional. The industrial-style exhibition building perfectly matched the artwork on display. I was especially happy to see Seth's art in person. I would highly recommend a visit to anyone. We went in winter, and it was already quite cold inside the building, so I recommend dressing warmly during the colder months.

We stumbled across STRAAT after catching the free ferry. We wanted to explore more of Amsterdam and was so impressed. We were visiting Amsterdam due to my daughters love of art, so this was perfect. The district is bursting with colour and vibrancy. We spent hours exploring the museum and surrounding areas. The cafe in the museum is great and reasonably priced. They also offered gluten free brownies which was great for me. The art itself is astounding. It ranges from the large and in your face to the small hidden pieces. There is something for everyone. The shop was great and again, reasonably priced. Very impressed with our visit.

We absolutely loved this museum! The mostly massive artworks by a wide variety of street artists were a delight to see. Some were thought provoking, some amusing and all were interesting. The large space gives you a certain freeness to explore and make it your own personal experience. It was a highlight of our time in Amsterdam.

Unlike the charming views of Amsterdam’s canals, river, and traditional buildings, the NDSM area feels industrial and gloomy. Street art and graffiti can be a way to bring more energy and excitement to the neighborhood. The façade of the STRAAT Museum and the surrounding street walls are covered in colorful images, but to see the works inside you need to buy a ticket—quite the opposite of the philosophy of street artists who stepped out of museums to connect directly with people. What a paradox!

Besides the amazing urban art pieces from all over the world, the museum is full of history, both in the artworks and in the space itself. It’s definitely worth a visit! Everything is well organized, there’s a café upstairs, lockers to store your stuff, and an interactive area where visitors can create and display their own art. I bought my ticket on the spot with no line, I went on a weekday, it was really quiet.

Best museum I visited in the Netherlands. Definitely with a visit. You can get there by a short, free ferry from behind the Central train station. The street art museum is housed in a giant warehouse. Entry was not cheap at €20, but definitely worth it. Museum was well curated with explanations in English and Dutch. The art work is excellent, and nearly all of it is huge (several meters high and/or wide. There is a viewing gallery across the warehouse, a nice cafe, and an area outside full of street art. If you go to Amsterdam, visit this museum.
