My husband and I love boutique/design hotels, especially since he’s an architect. As interesting as the design is, it inhibits rather than enhances the guest experience. The bathroom is a perfect example. Necessities such as extra toilet paper are literally hidden in secret compartments, the bathroom counter is below knee level making it awkward to even do simple tasks like brushing your teeth, and the shower drain is an open hole large enough to lose a piece of jewelry or to catch a toe. As we are older than 30, we felt largely dismissed by staff, an attitude we not afforded to younger guests. |The literal tipping point came when I tripped and fell hard going in the front door. The entrance to the hotel is slightly raised from the adjacent sidewalk. Passersby and my husband helped me to the lobby. The manager came out to check on me. I was badly shaken and half-joking said I needed a drink. The manager asked if I’d like a glass of wine and I thankfully said yes, although my husband said no. A staff member came back with two glasses of red. The next morning when we checked out, we were charged for both glasses of wine. My husband questioned it because the manager offered it and the staff member said, “Oh yes, we are charging you.” As it turned out, even though I was heavily dressed for winter, I was badly bruised from my shoulders to my knees and fractured three bones in my hand/wrist. |Needless to say we won’t return.
