Excellent customer service shopping for myself as well as a 15 year old looking for their first knife. We were both offered a selection based on our preferences and expert knowledge behind each knife presented. We were given the utmost support in our decision making and space to think when needed. Strata is a gem of a place and Ill definitely be back for all of my culinary needs

Ryan was amazing! What a surprising and delightful experience. Got 3 of my knives sharpened and spent time selecting 2 new beauties for the collection. Going to work on a new handle for another existing custom knife. I was/am blown away but their selection, patience and all-round customer-centricity and friendliness. Can’t wait to visit Portland again.

Great store for knives if you are interested. Fantastic service! We were all new to Japanese knives and Strata team explained our options patiently and were very helpful for my friends who were picking their first! :)

Last Sunday, 5/11/25 probably 4PM, I stumbled into Strata Portland as an out-of-state visitor, just killing time. I inquired with the gentleman at the counter as to whether he could help me with my dissatisfaction with the factory edge on my Boker Kwaiken. He took one look at it and gave me a gracious "I'll see what I can do" and disappeared behind the curtain. Some time passed. He emerged, displeased with what he perceived as some difficulties dealing with my knife. But what he handed me was solidly better than what I'd handed him minutes before. It was some great work, and even better customer service when it came to explaining to me the complexities of my particular piece. I wish I'd gotten his name, but, management, if you're reading this, that dude deserves a raise! He even denied a tip! Signed, someone in the service industry :)

1 star review for blonde haired fellow with glasses. Needs to improve his customer service skills. 5 star review to the young lady who helped me pick out my knife. Tentative, knowledgeable, and was happy to answer questions.

If I could, I would give 10 stars for the amazing customer service. Picked up a knife that my son had left for sharpening, then browsed and was assisted by two different people, both of whom had amazing knowledge about all the different knives, cleavers and other blades. Terrific selection in many different sizes. They even did a custom wooden sheath for a chef's knife while I waited. Will definitely be back for more purchases!

Gorgeous shop with amazing selection of home goods. We had several knives sharpened, they are excellent now! We also bought a new Japanese Damascus knife that is beautiful and we bought some glass ware. There service is excellent, they really know their knives and the home good selection is really exceptional. It's all quality crafted goods that I will definitely be going back for.

Strata is a wonderful addition to the Portland food scene. We purchased three knives during their opening weekend. The owners were so knowledgeable and patient as we made our selections. They asked us what we like to cook, what we already have, and what would be the most useful for us. After they made a few suggestions, we picked what we liked best. When we left, we felt very confident in our purchase decision. We ended up with a knife for chopping veggies, one for doing a bit of finer work (ahem, removing skin from a peach for my 9 month old), and a bread knife (seriously, I didn't realize you don't need to smoosh bread every time you slice it). It is such a joy to have these new tools in our kitchen! We've also had a few of our knives sharpened -- I would highly recommend Strata for this service. It's not worth using dull knives!!

I can't remember the name of the employee who helped my wife and I today, but he was extremely knowledgeable, honest, helpful, and really easy to deal with. Super nice, too. We'll be back for sure. As for the person whose knives were dull two months after being sharpened- what the hell did you do to your knives in the preceding two months? That's like complaining that your tires wore out :/

I ordered 3 blades and 2 sayas from strata (Evan) A few days ago. I had a super good experience AAA+ they were knowledge, Great communication and super fast respond For all my questions. Strata has an amazing selection of all types of knives, and scissors, and cleavers (French, Japanese, Spanish). Strata is an amazing store. Customer service is beyond amazing.

This is only the second review I've ever given on Yelp, but my experience with Evan was so amazing, I had to write. His service was night and day better than the other places I've gone to sharpen knives. The proof is in the pudding - the knives cut like magic! I joked with my husband that all I have to do was hold the newly-sharpened knife up to an apple and it parts like the red sea! Also, Evan gave me advice (for free) when I asked about buying a new kitchen knife. He took the time to ask about my cooking habits and suggested a knife that made sense for me. And then he wrote an email with a bunch of useful tips and suggestions about using the knives. And the email included this beautiful sentence, which shows his enthusiasm: "If you want to invest in your most commonly used kitchen tool, that you likely use everyday, that makes everything more enjoyable, then there's a whole world to be discovered that rich in passion, history, culture, craftmanship, and performance." This guy truly knows his stuff - and LOVES his stuff. So glad he's in Portland!

Do you have knives that you care about? Do you value customer service? Do you appreciate quality? If yes, then go talk with Evan at Strata. Personally, I love it when I find someone who is truly passionate about what they do, and when I met Evan, I had a feeling that he probably did meticulous work. His interest in knives, stones and sharpening was apparent and contagious. My hunch was confirmed after I got my knives back the first time. They looked beautifully sharpened, but the proof was in the cutting. If you want to know more about sharpening and the rare Japanese stones he uses, he'll share. If you want advice about knives to buy, he's your guy. I can't recommend him highly enough. Have Evan sharpen your knives - you'll be happy you did.
