The 8 Best Hostels in San José, Costa Rica (Updated 2025)
"I liked the colorful, art-covered vibe at Stray Cat Hostel—homey, well maintained, and clean—making it an easy place to relax between travels. The hostel is quiet and laid back so sleep is easy, but mattresses are a bit thin and bunks don’t have curtains; the surrounding area isn’t ideal after dark, though it’s close to the bus station and convenient if you’re passing through or heading to the airport." - Matthew Kepnes
"My favorite hostel in San José, Stray Cat Hostel is a clean, conveniently located option near the bus station where the staff go out of their way to ensure you have an amazing visit." - Matthew Kepnes
Owner reached out to make sure everything is okay and that I was comfortable. I have stayed here a few times. Check in is at 2:30 pm. You are able to leave your bag here if you arrive early. The cats are friendly. They had someone at reception who could speak good English. I wouldn't recommend walking around this area at night time. Free coffee and tea available. Free breakfast is nice and simple, you have to request the breakfast at reception in the morning

This review is long overdue. I want to highlight my positive experience here and the biggest thank you to Jennifer who is always so kind and helpful. She treats you like a friend with love and care. I didn’t catch the others name but all staff had great service and were attentive to any questions I had. The rooms were great in terms of serving their purpose. Not highest quality/cleanliness compared to some others but what you would expect. Location was great for a short walk to major bus stations. Close enough to walk into the city. The area itself is not the nicest but I never had any issues. The cats were friendly and sweet. I enjoyed watching them do their cat thing and giving them all the pets. Thank you Stray Cat Hostel for a great time. I felt safe and welcomed!

Our family was only staying for 1 night before and after spending time in Uvita. I booked a dorm room with 4 beds and having arrived on Christmas Eve, there were a lot of fireworks right outside our room (with windows open). Not the hostel's fault though.|Staff was friendly and helpful.|Breakfast was included, plentiful and yummy - typical Costa Rican breakfast.|When we were all sick in Uvita and wanted to cancel our last night at the hostel and opt for more of a hotel with AC, the staff refunded us without any questions asked. |Only saw 1 cat who was a little skiddish. |Pretty central location.

Convenient hostel for landing in San Jose, very nice that they offer breakfast, the shared spaces are welcoming BUT very noisy surrounding street that makes it hard to sleep through the night! Also the neighborhood doesn’t feel super safe at night but super close to the bus station!
* super nice that they have cute cats :)

Jennifer is such a lovely host! Full of energy and super happy to help in any way she can. The rooms are fine, spacious bunks without curtains. The hostel is definitely more of a transit hostel with most people only spending one night before heading on to their next destination. I stayed two nights and had a really good experience. Don’t expect too much from the free breakfast, it’s quite small, but it’s free and a nice snack to start the day! The lobby is a nice place to hang out and the hostel is full of travelers still wanting to meet new people even though most aren’t sticking around. Also there’s a free walking tour that you can sign up for, I’d highly recommend it to learn more about San Jose and the history of Costa Rica!

A solid experience. Great for nights between transport connections. I stayed here several times between buses and planes and enjoyed the experience. It has everything you need for a comfortable and clean stay, the art and cats are lovely additions; however, it's not somewhere I would relax and lounge for days on end, just not that vibe or intended purpose in design. But overall I recommend! Great for the price and I felt safe despite being in a rougher part of town.

A very sweet hostel with actual stray cats! This place is perfect if you’re looking for an affordable and friendly place in San Jose. The receptionist who helped us out at check in was so kind. She gave us tips on our upcoming travels to Nicaragua and she was super clear to talk to in Spanish!
The breakfast is very nice and even though we had to leave at 6am we were still able to have breakfast made before leaving. Free coffee all day is a hugeee plus too.
Only note was that as there are cats in the hostel they do find their way onto the beds some time and I did have a good amount of cat fur on my sheets.

Great value. Clean facilities. Nice murals, decorations, books, things available for purchase. Traditional rice and beans breakfast, it was pleasant. Friendly, attentive staff. Bohemian feel but lot of attention to detail for comfort. Many bathrooms, and showers. Area seemed reliably safe during the day, did not go out at night but I know a group did nearby around 11pm without incident. I'd recommend!
