"Strikið, one of the finest places to dine in Akureyri, is spread out betweentwo dining rooms on the fifth floor of an office building. The restaurant’s menu—created by owner and head chef Robert Hasler—features traditional Icelandic dishes such as lamb shoulder and seafood soup as well as modern fare such as sushi and reindeer burgers. The terrific food is matched to wonderful views of the fjord and mountains from huge picture windows and, on the long sunlit nights of summer, from an outdoor terrace."

We made a reservation and the food was spectacular. The salmon was so fresh, and juicy, and the sauce and flavors added to the taste, that might presumably be the best salmon I’ve ever tasted. The sushi was also great, we ordered the Langoustine and can recommend. Cocktails were fresh as well!

No doubt that you have to ask the locals to get to the best restaurant in town. We're glad this was recommended to us by our hotel concierge. The food was delicious, service was great and the atmosphere was so cozy. It was so busy and packed when we arrived so we have to wait a while to get our seat. Hence, I suggest making a reservation in advance to avoid disappointment. We tried their course meal and it was so satisfying. We were so full that we couldn't finish the dessert. Anyway, it was worth it.

We had a delicious meal here. The views over the harbour from the top floor restaurant are stunning and this definitely has a fine dining feel to it. The staff here were very attentive and helpful. We started with complimentary bread and chilli butter which was delicious. The bread was soft and fresh with a crunchy outer crust. For staters, I had the tempura cauliflower sushi (2,490kr / £14) and my mum had the arctic char (3,990kr / £22). These were good. For mains, I appreciated that there was an option to try traditional Icelandic potatoes and pickled vegetables, but with tofu rather than meat or fish. This was packed with flavour, including a fresh pesto and pumpkin puree. This was 5,690kr / £32.50 which feels expensive and is by far the priciest main I’ve had on this trip (even by Iceland standards!). My mum had the salmon which came with similar accompaniments and was a good portion. This was 7,490kr / £42, so similarly pretty expensive. Overall I’d say that the service, ambiance and food here was really good. However, considering the price, we ate better and more affordable meals elsewhere.

Intentionally bad service. Americans beware. We had 7:30 pm reservations and arrived just before 7:00, finding easy parking directly across the street. There is no hostess station so we checked in at the bar and said we'd go out and sit on the nice sized roof-top deck for a drink before seating for dinner (photo). We got our drinks in 1/2 hour. At 7:35 I decided they were not going to bring us to our table so checked back in at the bar and were seated at a very visible table in the middle of the dining area. The hostess pointed to the table and handed us menus, there was no presentation, welcome, or offer the explain the menu items, we already had our drinks from the deck. We both noticed none of the staff appeared happy or cheerful. A waitress appeared fairly quickly and we ordered a sushi appetizer to share and 2 entrées. The sushi appeared in a timely manner, was placed on the table silently and the waitress left. We sat for a bit until I flagged her down and asked for plates (photo of sushi and no plates). We finished the sushi and it was taken away. While chatting with a British couple at the next table who were seated just after us, we noticed they had bread. I flagged down a waitress and asked if we may have bread also. She replied "if there is any more", in an uncertain manner. Bread soon arrived. The couple next to us were served, ate, and left. After the staff started resetting multiple tables, I remarked that maybe we weren't going to be served at all and at 8:55 flagged down a waitress to inquire about the status of our meal. This was an hour and 25 minutes after our reservation. Our dinner was served 7 minutes after that, we ate, and sat around for a few more minutes. No one came to collect our plates or ask if we wished desert (we did), so we walked to the pay station at the front and asked if the poor service was because we were Americans? The hostess literally ran off and the bar tender appeared to ring us up. I told her we had done nothing to deserve this sort of treatment and she neither offered an apology or even acknowledged there was a problem. I was still stewing over this the next day. Needless to say I will never eat there again (though the food was good), and I recommend Americans avoid the place until the current Iceland tariff is reduced and/or the general perception of Americans improves (the Icelanders used to love us).

Located in Akureyi I couldn't tell you the name of the dishes. The menu lists it in the Icelandic name, but it does have an English translation. All of it was incredible. If you have a chance to eat here. Do it. We traveled around the entire perimeter of Iceland. That is the way to see Iceland. These dishes were simply unreal good. They do a great job of presentation. The flavors are incredible and I would go back just for the food.

Unfortunately, the overall experience was not quite up to our taste. The langoustine soup had great flavor but was overly salty. The baked brie was inconsistent, a bit hit or miss. The grilled lobster, however, was quite nice and enjoyable. The biggest disappointment was the lamb. It was one of the worst dishes I've had in Iceland – incredibly tough, difficult to cut, and far too fatty. Oddly, there were random chunks of mayo on the plate that didn’t seem to belong. On a positive note, the service was attentive throughout the meal, and the passion fresco dessert was a highlight. It was light, refreshing, and did a great job of cleansing my palate after the disappointing lamb.

Absolutely amazing food and drinks. I had the Set Menu 3 course meal and it was so good. The presentation was absolutely beautiful and the taste was beyond amazing. I didn't get a picture of the Sticky Brownie dessert but it is to die for! It was worth the price for sure.
