5 Best Day Trips from Chicago | Condé Nast Traveler

"Exposed steel beams, warm wood wine racks, and art made by Studio Winery's artist owners create a warm, convivial atmosphere for wine drinking. The large room features many high-top tables for groups to sit and enjoy, plus a small stage for visiting music acts. The wines aren't technically fine wines, but they're fine wines—get it? The Musician series wines take their name from famous musicians, using local varietals and range from dry to sweet. Meanwhile, the premier tasting wines feature more elegant, classic European varietals, like viognier, syrah, and cabernet sauvignon." - Jessi Roti, Joseph Hernandez

Google
Great vibes and really cool establishment. The whiskey was very young and tasted that way, which is fine but I think they need to age it longer before releasing it to the public. Overall would recommend checking this place out for the wine and vibes.

My wife and I traveled up here to this wonderful establishment on our way to our vacation destination Monday, August 12th. I'll have to say that it's been one of the best wineries that I have ever encountered. A husband and wife own this fine business. From what I gather from their awesome employees, the wife takes care of all the artwork on all of their wine and spirit bottles as well as the artwork that adores their winery establishment and I believe they told me the artwork is for sale as well. My wife and I were treated very well by the employees running the wine tasting. They were very helpful in describing each wine, how it tasted, and what its flavors are. My wife and I had five different tastings of different wines. I had the sweet sweet she had to dry which were all very very good! I highly recommend doing a tasting!! We purchased two bottles to take home. They also make a very good old fashioned! After the wine tasting we hung out for a while. Walking and looking around they have a functioning recording studio, which I found to be very interesting and amazing since I am a musician as well. We went outside and checked out all the grapes that they had growing on the property and the lovely views with music playing in the background. Very enjoyable. I highly recommend checking out the Studio Winery & Geneva Lake Distillery. You will not be disappointed!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Google
Very nice winery with a great layout and atmosphere. The local artwork and crafts gave the space a great vibe. I worked with Doug to setup a VIP experience for 10 people and the whole process was top notch. Even had to change the date once and that was not an issue. On the day of the event, our table was reserved and setup nicely and the sommelier was very knowledgeable. The pace of the tastings was relaxed and not rushed. I won't go into the wine tastes since it is very subjective, but our group thought the selections were good and showcased their variety. The pairing of the charcuterie board was also really nice. Our group thought the whole experience was excellent.

Google
Studio winery was a great place to relax and visit with friends while enjoying in-house made wine and spirits. As a bonus this is a working art studio and it had some really cool artwork on the wall. I also appreciate that this place had a live four-piece jazz and blues band.

Google
What an amazing little gem tucked away in industrial Lake Geneva, with one of the coolest vibes we’ve ever seen! The wine was phenomenal, the space was incredible with all the music memorabilia and artwork, and the setting was amazing we cannot wait to come back and enjoy the patio with our dog, but the true treasure here was Nate, our bartender, who made the entire experience. Just a joy of a person to chat with, knowledgeable, and really made the experience. Thanks again Nate!!

Google
Great vibes, love the music, but if you’re coming for the red wine… oof. Honestly so tough to finish. I love a local spot but this wine was maybe the worst I’ve ever had. Just not my taste. Come for cocktails if anything.

Trenton Ness

Google
Great wine and great vibes! The wine tasting we did was very nice and informational. Come on Fridays or Saturdays for live music!!

Yelp
Had a good experience at Studio Winery on a recent visit to LG! The tasting room is really cute - packed with art created mostly by one of the owners, from what I understand. It's not very big inside, but there are a handful of high-tops, and seats along the bar. At the front of the room there's a stage as well. Sounds like they often have live music, which would be really fun to come back for. I was with a group of gals for a wine tasting. I'll say I loved all of the wines but one. Lots of great variety here! We all felt a little shorted on the tasting itself, as the woman leading out group was spread thin helping/educating multiple groups at once. We of course had to get a charcuterie plate to pair, and that was delightful. Best part? You get to take a bottle home of your favorite wine you tasted, which was a total surprise to us. In addition to their wines, they have tons of other drinks available at the bar. Custom cocktails, a whole section dedicated just to Old Fashioneds, plus some local brews. Their food menu is made up of mostly snack-style food, with many tasty picks from cheeses and meats, to spreads and small pizzas. After our tasting, we enjoyed their side patio - I had a lavender cocktail of sorts with an adorable butterfly ice cube. Points for presentation! I'd come back!

Yelp
Cool place. We tried a lot of your spirits and we have our favorites. However they're all very good. Salut!

Yelp
This place is PACKED! literally standing room only on a 4:00 Saturday afternoon. Their wine was just OK. I also got an island old fashioned, and it was better. They have lots of cute, little dogs roaming around and live music too. I also saw that they have a lot of craft workshops advertised, so this is a hopping place. Great for something to do and have fun with friends if wine quality is not a factor for you.

Yelp
We stopped at this winery yesterday to do a tasting. We didn't have a reservation and that wasn't a problem to just walk in. If you're a larger group, I recommend making reservations so they can set up for you. There's a long bar with stools and also several high top tables. In the front of this room, there is the stage for musicians to play. There's artwork on the walls for purchase as well as some wine related items and jewelry. Beyond the tasting room is a really cool space with a recording studio for musicians to use. We paid $15 each for a tasting. My husband had four spirits, and I had four wines. Not only is this a winery, but they make their own spirits as well. The gentleman at the bar, I believe his name was Austin, took good care of us. If you buy two bottles of wine, they waive the $15 tasting fee. After our tasting, we bought four bottles, two whites and two reds so we didn't need to pay the $30 for the tasting. The owners were there as well and were engaging. Their three dogs were in the winery as well, cuteness overload. I had the opportunity to pick up one and snuggle with him when the owner gave me the go ahead. There's a light menu as well, and since it was around lunchtime, we ordered a light fare, goat cheese with honey and also a crusty baguette. I recommend stopping here for a tasting, as well as their nightly entertainment when visiting Lake Geneva.

Yelp
Neat winery and distillery. Artwork adds to the warm interior. Flights can include both products. Great wine selections and top notch spirits. Servers are extremely knowledgeable and friendly, answering all our questions. Definitely a go to place in Lake Geneva!

T J.

Yelp
I'm so tired of being disappointed by local wineries/distilleries, I don't know why Wisconsin can't get it right. The spirits had a stong cleaning fluid taste and the price was not worth it.

Emily C.

Yelp
Came here last Saturday and did the wine tasting and it was horrible. It took an hour and a half to try 5 wines that was equivalent to maybe a full glass. The wines were not good at all which was extremely unfortunate. The experience would have been better if we just went to the bar and ordered our own drinks and did our own tasting.

Yelp
My friend made reservations for us to come here for her birthday. I was super excited. A art studio winery with a live band, art and wine tasting. Sounds like a plan. We picked the wine tasting for $25.00 with 5 tastings and we each got our own personal bottle of wine to take home. Sweet dealings. Nice studio with beautiful colorful art work along the walls. They have puppies walking around mingling with the customers. The only thing I didn't like was our tasting. It was only one person who had several tables for the tasting. She came said a few words about the wine and poured it into our glasses and off to another table she went to pour. Not your typical wine tasting. But I did enjoy 3 out of 5 of the wines. The labels on the bottles were created from art. This was a brilliant idea to combine a art studio with live music and a winery distilled all into one. Nice ambience. They have local beer and light snacks for you to purchase. Gift shop, patio, stage for live music and art workshops. Live music is every Friday and Saturday from 5-9.

Yelp
Me and 3 of my girlfriends visited Studio Winery apart of our visit to Lake Geneva. From the outside, I was a little nervous... the curb appeal is very meh... as we got closer to the door I saw the little grapes and the grape vines and figured these folks must know what they are doing to be growing their own grapes! I heard the little doggies before I saw them. Super cute little ankle bitters (NO, they did NOT bite us... just what i call little short dogs.) The dogs were very sweet and well mannered. They paid us no mind after we came in the door. Once in the door, the studio grabs your attention. There is a ton of beautiful art everywhere and pieces of jewelry to buy. We chose the 5 tastings and the chocolate.. GET THE CHOCOLATE. lol it was really good. The wines were great. A little on the sweet side but good! My only "complaint" is that I would have appreciated a heavier pour, but for the price and taking a bottle home.. I can't complain. Mike conducted our tasting and was very kind! and Doug was a great sport and allowed us to take a look at what he was currently working on in the shop. I would recommend this place to others in the area1

Yelp
As always, we're having a blast at Studio Winery, but Ivy Ford is NEXT LEVEL!!! What a voice and the band is red hot, too. We're always coming back to Studio, but I'm coming back for Ivy, too!!!

Yelp
very unusual setting with artwork and interesting things for sale. And wine and bourbon and spirits, of course I tried two different reds, I I liked the Marechal Foch Reserve. And bought a bottle to take home. Also a bottle of Frontenac blanc reserve. Recommend both. We also had an olive tapenade with a fresh bread. Would like to have seen more variety with the apps The performer that night was very good singer, but just a little loud. hard to have a conversation. All the drinks and the food is ordered at the bar. The service is limited but was very good.
google avatar

Yelp
Great ambience.place was rocking. Standing room only. Location leaves something to be desired for a winery. Venue is basically in an industrial park
google avatar

Kamilah S.

Yelp
I was not a fan of this winery at all. The wines were not good, the staff are not the friendliest, they were not rude, just not friendly. My husband and I did four samples of either wine or spirits, you can mix and match, but all the wine was not good. either it was bitter or had an after taste. The best thing I tasted was the whiskey and it wasn't the best, but it was much smoother than the wine. My husband did the Spirits and he too, thought they were not very good. Reservations are not required, unless you are in a large group.

Yelp
Cute wine tasting room, lots of gorgeous art and amazing servers! Kelsey was friendly, knowledgeable and very attentive! Would definitely go back!
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
Went back again, it's still awesome. Got to see some live music and try the fall drinks. The vibe at this place is always so chill, it feels like cheers, everybody is family. See you guys next time I'm in town!
google avatar

CJ A.

Yelp
We stopped here quick when we passed it. It is a little off the main tourist areas. The bartender was very friendly and they have a good list of cocktails that they make with their spirits. The wine list was good as well. We sat in back patio and it was comfy and pleasant. A must stop when in Lake Geneva.
google avatar

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place with live music and wine..... but it's just a no for me. The dashunds greet you with no warning so please look down before walking around this place. No greeting you just kinda come in and sit. Ok. Bar tender was fine not overly friendly but not overly open either. The sweet wines ( which I usually like, hence trying them first) I couldn't drink. Sorry. We tried a margarita as well, but that was worse. So this was not the place for us. He tried the in-house made alcohol and beer. Beer was drinkable. Musician was ok. As hard as it is for me to say, this is not a go to again for me. But hey, I'm told the bands are great later in the evening! Don't take my word for it
google avatar

Donna Q.

Yelp
The cocktails are amazing as is the staff. Live music in a chill atmosphere. A weekend in Lake Geneva is not complete without a cocktail or 2 at Geneva Lake Distilling.
google avatar

Kathryn T.

Yelp
Terrific ambiance including dogs, great set up for live music and plenty of seating for groups. The ambiance is the value. The wine was close to undrinkable and we did not drink what we ordered. Go for the ambiance but either try the spirits or have a water.
google avatar

Yelp
Probably the coolest winery I've ever been to. It's a triple threat, music, art, studio and a winery AND recently a distillery. You can even check out the music studio/lounge. The owners are awesome, they have puppies! The wine tasting is $25 price includes a take home bottle, we participated in the musicians wine tasting series, live music, small plates and cocktails. They even have wine/paint nights. Parking can get congested on busy days if you're local I recommend a cab or lyft. My only complaint is the table service. There is no table service, the waitress comes gives us our tastings makes our rounds but she seemed to be the only one doing it. On a packed Saturday night. I also recommend coming early. We ordered bottles and some of us got ours, some of us had to go to the bartender to pick ours up - in addition to drinks. Nevertheless it is a MUST if you're up in Lake Geneva/Williams Bay.

Yelp
I was here for a bachelorette party and the girls decided to do the $50 tasting option. This included the wine tasting, a private room charcuterie, and a tour of the "vineyard". This was NOT worth $50 per person. You basically sat in the owners personal music studio on old couches and ottomans and drink 1oz pours of mediocre wine while sharing a charcuterie board with 15 people. My friend was pregnant so she got the nonalcoholic option which was an unjustified $30 considering she didn't get any food and when she asked what her drink options were the unmasked server said "oh we have soda, juice, and I guess I can make a mocktail." For $50 and $30 a person, you'd think you would get a souvenir glass to take home or at the bare minimum, some plates for the charcuterie that we ate off of foot stools. Also, I'm a musician and work at a music school. Music is a great theme for a bar but you should put half as much effort into the quality of your wine as you do the music paraphernalia that littered the place.
google avatar

Pat M.

Yelp
Stopped with a friend to do a wine tasting, no one was there when we arrived. We had made a reservation prior to coming. We ordered two different tastings, which isn't there normal thing, but since they weren't busy, our server accommodated is. I tasted the semi sweet wines and she ordered the dry reds. We both ordered their fancy chocolate plate, which were both beautiful and delicious! The server informed us about the wine, the grapes, the region and a little history of their little business as it offers paint classes and live music by the owners. We had a very enjoyable time and at the end of our tasting, we got to choose a bottle of wine to take home, which are mostly named after musicians.
google avatar

Cheryl L.

Yelp
A lovely setting! The bar for wine tasting is great and there is a nice selection of food. Simple but tasty! Be sure to stay for the music!

Emily S.

Yelp
If you are in Lake Geneva thinking about having an amazing wine taste with your girlfriends think again. This place has so much potential but did not live up to the hype. For starters, all tasters must have the same tasting menu (which was unfortunate because a lot of us don't like sweet wine). The wine tasting we chose was a total miss. It takes forever after each tasting pour. Which makes it difficult when they are strict with you 1 hour time slots. We could not even enjoy a glass after the tasting because the next group was coming in. They did let us know we could sit at the bar but at that point it wasn't worth it. That was just the experience. The wine was very poor. We had the basic $35 tasting and it was all too sweet. My suggestion is to get rid of their wine and bring some in from california and other wine countries. Every couple of months change the tasting menu with these other wines.
google avatar

Asenath N.

Yelp
Stopped here while visiting town! Great winery and location, closed a lot of things in the area. The atmosphere was very welcoming. The tasting is $6 and if you buy 2 bottles the tasting is free. It looks like they have live music at night but we were there during the day. We look forward to coming back and trying the food as well next time.

Olivia K.

Yelp
This is not worth it. There is no server so you have to go to the bar to order and grab everything yourself. You didn't know anything about the wines -- they left a list in a plastic holder at the center of the table and that was it. So we couldn't really learn about the wines or ask questions since no one would serve us. There were some tables that had a server and I wasn't sure how they got that option. We ordered two bottles; one white ($28) and one red ($35). They were both table wines (which never said that on the menu) and both were pretty bad. It tasted like we were drinking a cold glass of water with a butter flavor. I know that is a weird way to explain it but it is the only thing to compare it to. Then we opened the red and were in for a real treat. It tasted like the chocolates with the cherries inside of them, so, not good. There were four of us there and none of us could drink it! We all LOVE wine and have been to multiple wineries before. We sadly left full glasses at the table because it was not good and made some of us even feel sick. It was truly sad! We did not order the cheapest bottles by any means and were very disappointed. We ordered cheese curds and some gouda flavored chips. What we got were a bag of cheese and a bag of chips with a board. A very DYI cheese board...literally. There would randomly be music playing, then there was none. The patio wasn't great and the overall ambiance was not great. The winery is near a shopping center and the Piggly Wiggly to put it into perspective of where this place is located. We aren't from the area so we did not know this beforehand. Check out the men's room bathroom art if you do decide to go! You will definitely have something to talk about.
google avatar

Bryan A.

Yelp
Went for a tasting at noon, and was not disappointed. This is a small, locally owned winery, that provides delicious wines and an interesting experience. The owners are a husband and wife, one of which is a musician (husband) and the other is an artist (wife). As a result, you can see live music on a weekly basis or take part in a wine tasting and painting class. Good ambience coupled with good wines makes studio a worthwhile and enjoyable destination.
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
So glad to find a nice place to go a little wine tasting while we were in town for the weekend. Dog friendly inside, too! Just call first so they can put the resident wiener dogs away. Friendly staff and yummy wines (I tried the dry reds). Only $8 for 5 tastes. We'll definitely be back next time we're in the area'
google avatar

Lenore D.

Yelp
Mike is a great person to have during your winetasting. He's informative and engaging. We had a great time, thanks mostly to him! And the wine is great. We left with three bottles!
google avatar

Baylee D.

Yelp
I love this winery so much! My husband and I stopped here first on our vacation and we came back to Lake Geneva from Milwaukee just to come here again. The atmosphere is so cool. They have a nice outdoor seating area where you can see the vineyards and walk around in them. They have live music on Saturdays and they also have wine and self-painting for $25. The wine is phenomenal and the service was also great. Jackie was super friendly and Chelsea was as well. They were both very knowledgeable. The price is good for the quality of wine. They also have a recording studio in the back and a lounge area with a fireplace that you can sit by. They have pianos, guitars, and great artwork in the lounge and it gives a very warming, calm vibe. We are going to make another trip up just so we can come back here!
google avatar

Anita M.

Yelp
Being from the Chicagoland area where wineries are nearly obsolete, I was definitely looking forward to checking out at least one on my day trip in Lake Geneva with the girls. We just so happened to make a wrong turn on the way back to the hotel and came across studio winery and what other thing was there to do besides check the place out? It was fate if you ask me. The place is unlike your typical winery. It's not on a farm nor does it face a lake or pn a big lot of land. Instead it's a self standing building with vinery lots in front and back of the building. Once you get inside you are surrounded by modern art, high tables with chairs and at the back of the room a wine bar and counter for tastings. It's got a very artistic feel that you would have in a regular art gallery. Art, fresh French bread, Cheese and wine. What more can you ask for? Everything was top notch- wine is super affordable around $14 a bottle. I also highly recommend the merlot cheese. If you only try one cheese, get that one. Oh and the owner has a a little wiener dog aka dachshund named Count Choccula who roams around the shop freely and just is living the life as patrons sneak him chunks of salami and cheese-I'm kinda jealous to be honest. Great place to check out if you're visiting Lake Geneva!
google avatar

Kristen C.

Yelp
It's a winery....for tourists...bring your wallet and leave high standards at home. We had a bottle for $40...some bottles around $17. Staff very helpful and friendly. Tip, they don't do tastings anymore so bottle or glass only. We also got a cheese and sausage board...it was a Boards Head lunchable type snack so don't expect anything wild. Probably wouldn't go back and didn't take any wine home.
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
This is a nice stop if you are looking for things to do on your Lake Geneva getaway! You can test 5 different wines for $8 or...for free if you purchase 2 bottles of wine. We ended up purchasing 2 bottles and enjoyed some cheese curds and crackers with a glass to tie us over to dinner. A fun outing on a hot day!
google avatar

Tristan R.

Yelp
Mixed feelings... Nice atmosphere, good live music, but the wine/add ons for the wine tasting were not what I was expecting. Felt like I could have gone to any local deli and got the add ons myself and thought they would have been specialties at a wine tasting, and the red wine all seemed to have an acquired tobacco taste that wasn't in wheelhouse. All in all it was average and I would go back for the music but sticking with the beer.
google avatar

Heidi L.

Yelp
Great service and yummy wines. Very friendly and fun atmosphere. Ordered some snacks and it was all packaged and we had to open and cut ourselves. Kinda odd. So that's why I gave it 4.
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
Wine, music, art, adorable little dog... If I owned a business, it would basically be this place. The wines trend towards the sweeter side, so if that's your jam, you'll be right at home. Also, pay the little bit extra and try the ports.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
After my first time at this place, I was in love. Now, a dozen visits later, I can't even remember what my life was like before Studio Winery. The multi-use winery-art studio-recording studio space is artsy and fun. The outdoor patio offers the perfect place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine, a wine flight, a little snack, and the fresh air. Each time we come there is a new wine to try and each time it doesn't disappoint. If it is in stock, you must get a bottle of the Axl. A semi-sweet Rosé that is the perfect summer wine. Stop by. For $6.00 you get an amazing wine flight and the opportunity to make some fun memories.

The FoodBoss ..

Yelp
My wife and I spent a quiet afternoon tasting wine and hanging out in the "studio". We had a great time and brought home some nice wine. They offer some of the most unique flavored and delicious wines I have had. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. 100% recommend!

Rachel K.

Yelp
If you are interested in getting COVID, I highly recommend this place. The servers were not wearing masks and there was literally zero social distancing attempts. They crammed as many people as possible into a very small, non ventilated area. It was a reckless, irresponsible bar and I will never return due to their blatant lack of care towards guest safety.

Joe H.

Yelp
I'm no wine snob but this wine was intolerable to drink. I'm not sure who thought to bottle this garbage. Zero Covid precautions and social distancing guidelines. Avoid if you enjoy wine And value your health.
google avatar

joan c.

Yelp
Studio Winery has some good bands and mediocre wine. However if you happen to go on a night of a less than mediocre band do not say anything to owner. He verbally attacks customer. If you read any of negative comments it has to do with poor service. That service attitude comes from the top--owner.
google avatar

Read L.

Yelp
We went there for a tasting. If you have a palette don't bother. These wines make wine drinkers settle for beer. All the food was straight from a jewel. Please don't show up with an interest in art either, there are landfills full of paintings like these. The almonds kicked ass though. I think my friend brought them. If it's been a while for you, don't miss the nudie paintings in the bathroom. If I were running this business I would think we should make some major changes. Peace.
google avatar

Lena G.

Yelp
At the beginning of the tastings, we were told to circle our "favorite wine to take home at the end." They definitely led our group to believe the bottle of wine came WITH the wine & chocolate pairing. At the end of the tasting, I went to pay for the table of 9, and had to pay well over a $100 for the wine. This annoyed me b/c had the group known the wine was separate from the 5 tastings, no one would have picked a wine. I won't be coming back. I'm giving 3 stars because the chocolate was very good, and the decor was nice.
google avatar

Kari K.

Yelp
Stopped in around 4:30 pm on my sisters birthday weekend. Some wine drinkers, some not... band was playing and it was an amazing energy. Also enjoyed the lounge area for those who don't drink to hang out in. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I recently did a girls weekend with my Mom and sister in Lake Geneva and we had a wonderful experience here. We each did a tasting, the wines were delicious, the staff was very informative and we went back the next night to see a really fun band. I loved the artwork on all the bottles too! Very cute and fun place!

Ashley A.

Yelp
The inside of this place was very cool and I enjoyed the art. I really wish I could have stayed longer than 20 mins but since they did not practice social distancing I had to quickly pay for my wine tasting and leave. Most of the servers were not wearing masks and the tables are on top of each other. They do not keep any of the tables empty, the place was packed and it is not very big. Random people standing every where as well. Was very disappointed and uncomfortable.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Adorable wine tasting shop. Beautiful art, Great wine, live music and a Weiner Dog running around if you're lucky
google avatar

Robert O.

Yelp
Studio Winery is a wonderful place and definite must see when visiting Lake Geneva. They have a wonderful wine and cheese selection, (they even have their own brand which I didn't realize at first) fantastic music and an overall upbeat atmosphere. I'm lucky enough to work close by so I get to stop in weekly and enjoy it. They even have special events and performances which just add on to it. I would highly recommend.

Yelp
Had a great time here for our anniversary . Our first time at a winery and didn't disappoint . Bought a bottle of Coltrane
