13 Best German Christmas Markets

"With a history of more than 300 years, this market is noted for exceptionally ornate decorations—stalls compete for an annual prize for most beautiful presentation—and a large concentration of booths (typically 200–300). The streets fill with the warming scents of cinnamon, vanilla, glühwein and roasting bratwurst, creating a richly festive atmosphere; the market is open Nov. 27 to Dec. 23, 2024." - Skye Sherman Skye Sherman Skye Sherman is a travel writer based in West Palm Beach, Florida. The main Stuttgart Christmas Market is pretty good. It's quite large, so there's a lot to see, but it's also a bit crowded and overwhelming. I also though the food options left a lot to be desired, as most of the things we bought to eat were just mediocre at best. This is more of a market for those who like lights, crafts, and rides. Oh, and of course, drinking mulled wine! Each of the little booths are decorated with whimsical holiday themes, and the proprietors go all out! I had the most fun looking at the rooftops of all of the booths. Food was mediocre for the most part, and there wasn't anything special on offer. We had garlic bread and mushrooms that honestly weren't even eating. Expect to find all the same old, same old Christmas Market foodstuffs (fried potatoes, potato pancakes, dipped marshmallows, etc.). Since so many famous car manufacturers are located in town, there's a free walkthrough light display in an adjacent park. It's fun, but is basically a light-up ad for cars, LOL.

This beautiful and cozy Christmas market offers a wide variety of mulled wine, sausages, and local sweets. Although it’s quite compact, it’s well-organized, creating a truly festive atmosphere.

Recently spent a couple nights in Stuttgart and enjoyed the annual Christmas Markets held during Advent (Lat Nov to 23 Dec). The market is centred around Schlossplatz, Schillerplatz and Marktplatz. We also found smaller setups in locations like Kartlsplatz as well. The Stuttgarter Weihnachtsmarkt is one of the oldest in Europe and is considered one of the most beautiful. Each year, there is a contest for best decorated stall so they go out out with making them very attractive, photogenic and entertaining to see. We really enjoyed seeing the traditional stalls selling local and seasonal foods, sweets, snacks and drinks. Plenty of gluhwein throughout the markets. Many stalls also sell Christmas ornaments, decorations and other seasonal and winter items. We also enjoyed seeing the large scale Xmas Pyramids, Ferris Wheel, large scale model train setup and child friendly features at the Christmas Market. Great way to spend a few hours in Stuttgart if you are visiting during December.

Super schöner Weihnachtsmarkt! Absolutes Highlight sind die Lichtfiguren! Viele verschiedene Stände, hier findet jeder etwas! Preislich nicht ganz so günstig…daher gibt es einen Stern Abzug

Schöner Weihnachtsmarkt mit Riesenrad als Highlight. Die Lichtshow war auch gut. Alles in allem einer der besten Weihnachtsmärkten.

Yelp
Dating back more than 300 years to as early as 1692, the Stuttgart Christmas market is one of the biggest and oldest in Europe. Certainly larger than the ones I have seen this year in Baden-Baden, Colmar, Mulhouse and Basel! Similar vendors, of course. Glühwein is everywhere. Sausages are grilled here and there. Baked goods. Trinkets. Baubles for decorating your Christmas tree. Spices. Candles. Hats and gloves. Carved wooden toys. Candies. I have a new cashmere scarf (it was COLD!), some cookies, some fancy chocolates and a lot of memories. Stuttgart is a big city and the size of the market reflects it. Lots of people. Lots of food. Lots of hot wine. Don't forget to look up. Many of the kiosks have very elaborate decorations on their roof. [Review 21255 overall - 259 in Germany - 220 of 2024.]

Yelp
While there are a number of great Christmas markets in the area, this one is conveniently located downtown. It's spread out between three different areas, so it's nice to stroll around and check out without feeling too crowded. I've learned to avoid going to these things on a weekend, so I had a nice time at the Finnish station having their Glogi (their version of Gluhwein) and Flammachs (flamed salmon), which was delicious. The tent was nice, especially if it had been colder.

Yelp
Grand in terms of being aisles and aisles and then sections and sections of little vendors packed right next to each other. Most of it being vendors selling crafts. It's a very big Christmas market jammed packed with people too. And I thought New York City gets festive and jammed packed during the holidays, well most everyday...Stuttgart Weihnachtmarkt surely surprised me with it's grandness. I don't know if they have it every year but the first cool thing to notate is Stuttgart Weihnachtmarkt has a train ride for children that can actually sit on top of a model train within an entire model of a city and the design is just a wonder to look at. The entire model design is built like one of the small cities or towns in Germany, with all the neat houses, trees and light must have been fun for kids riding around on top of a train around the model city. At night is a good time to go because then all the lights are out. In front of one of the buildings, there even Christmas Caroler gathering an audience just to hear them sing. Like I said, all the crafts fount at the market are neat, the food nice to explore and the what I believe was Gluhwein or some other version (due to lost in communication) of a wine like drink that's fruity, very spicy and surely in combination of alcohol, fruit and spices: packed a punch. If you want to check out a festive, live and great atmosphere while in Stuttgart, surely recommended to be in the Weihnachtmarkt and explore all the shops, building and landmarks around it.

Yelp
All the sights and smells of the best Christmas Markets Germany can offer.Gluhwein, long sausages with mustard in a bun, the beer, the people, the good but cold weather, all the fun and happiness for which reasons we make annual trips to different places. We still place Berlin with all the markets as top destination, but Stuttgart ran a very close second this year.We also visited Ulm and Rothenburg. The UK has its German Markets now but we love the hassle and long mileages in the coach to get to the originals. THe Gluhwein is better in Germany !!! You must try it !!

Yelp
I have been to many Christmas Markets all over Germany and Europe for many years. The European Christmas Markets are a great way to kick-off the holidays. The Stuttgarter Weihnachtsmarkt continues to be my favorite market. This year the market is open from 11/23/16-12/23/16. You can find maps of the market located at sponsoring businesses.

Yelp
Of the four major Christmas markets (aka Christkindlmarkt) that I've seen on my trip to Germany, Stuttgart has got to be the best (probably also one of the biggest). It spans several city blocks, and is filled with booths selling all sorts of Christmas trinkets, food, and Glühwein. There's even an ice skating rink and a small Ferris wheel and train rides for children. This was also the most packed with people! It's very easy to get to from the S-bahn stations or from the Stuttgart hauptbahnhof. It can also get very cold, so bundle up and drink plenty of Glühwein!

Yelp
Great food. Lots of choices. My favorite was the grilled mackerel, flamkucchen and the pork belly sandwhich. There are all kinds of different hand crafted stores and christmas decor stores. Love also getting the hot red wine in cute mugs to keep you warm while you walk around in the cold night. I didnt get to see all the stores because there were tons of them all around . There were also rides and ice skating rink. I truly enjoyed my visit here. I wish they have this in the US.

Yelp
Stuttgart Christmas Market is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in all of Europe and my favourite event in Stuttgart!!! It takes place on the three main squares in center of the city - Marktplatz, Schillerplatz and Schlossplatz (3 996 square meters). From the end of November until 23 December more than 250 splendidly decorated stands offer attractive Christmas goods such as Christmas decorations, toys and gifts. Christmas lights, the smell of mulled wine, fried sausages, Tarte flambée and waffles in the air and Christmas music everywhere form wonderful atmosphere of the Stuttgart Christmas Festival. By the way, Stuttgart Christmas Market is more than 300 years old and it was first mentioned in a document in 1692.

Yelp
Very nice market, many vendors, and a lot to choose from. There is also a Finnish Christmas market not far from the German Christmas market that sells smoked salmon. At first glance the market seems small but you must get away from the main square and venture behind the shops near the churches and only then you will see how big the market is. This market was impressive and I look forward to visiting it again if I return.
