7 Best Chicago Bars & Restaurants for Mexican Food & Margaritas | Eater

"Su Casa is a bit of an enigma. The bright yellow 19th-century building is out of place among the sleek River North skyscrapers and high-rises. The sign on the front reads “MEXICAN RISTORANTE,” despite that not being the Spanish word for “restaurant.” It’s mysteriously connected to Pizzeria Uno (turns out, it was opened by the person who started Uno’s, who was from Texas). But somehow it works for this neighborhood favorite, which has been serving Tex-Mex classics since 1963. There’s no shortage of tacos, burritos and guacamole, and the margaritas and Palomas are flowing. Skip the chain restaurants that crowd the area and settle in for a fun downtown Taco Tuesday experience." - Vox Creative

I stopped by Su Casa Mexican Restaurant, for a quick bite after work. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated with a vibrant Mexican-style vibe, although the lighting felt a bit too dark for my taste. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed with the overall experience. I ordered the guacamole, which came in a large bowl without any garnish it was very bland and lacking in flavor even missing the basics like salt, however the only one was very yummy is the Queso fundido. The rest of the food also lacked seasoning, and the service felt unprofessional and inattentive. There’s a lot of potential here, but some improvements in both food and service would really make a difference.

I was so hungry after a longhaul flight and found this gem. Lulu gave me a very warm welcome and made every effort to ensure my satisfaction. Their Portobello Mushroom Fajitas were heavenly. I would definitely encourage people to dine here, its so delicious. I'll be comming again if I am in the Town. Gracias from Switzerland.

Google
This place so was authentic and tasty! Best Mexican restaurant I’ve ever been to. I’m from Philly and went to Chicago for my birthday and this was the best restaurant out there that I tried. So authentic my waitress barely spoke English lol Def would come back

Google
Had a great meal at Su Casa! I ordered the chicken fajitas and they were very good—flavorful and cooked just right. The chips and salsa were also solid; the salsa has a bit of a kick, but I didn’t mind the spice. Service was fast and friendly, and overall it was a good dining experience.

Tristan Albrecht

Google
The food came out hot but very bland and portion sizes were very small compared to the prices for the chicken fajitas and steak fajitas. The salsa is hot. They did have another salsa but we had to request that. Our bills weren’t allowed to be split. The service was slow. It wasn’t even busy we were here bc we went to a tour in Chicago.

Google
Looks and feels like a trip to Mexico. The waiters are super friendly and can speak Spanish. You get free Nachos with dip as a starter and get refilled every time. Pretty good prices for the downtown of Chicago. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Google
I’m in Chicago for work, and was looking for a Mexican restaurant. Su casa was a six minute walk from my hotel with decent reviews, so I gave it a try. First and most important, my waitress was the sweetest and very attentive. The guacamole was really really good, as they make it tableside and to your specificity. Unfortunately, the rest of my meal was just OK. The Flaca margarita lacked flavor, and the chicken tacos were bland. I will say, the rice and beans were really good.

Melanie Rife

Google
I've never been to a place that everything was good. The meat was perfectly seasoned and chips and salsa was amazing and guacamole was the best. The pictures don't do the justice for this place. The service was great can't wait to go back here. Loved this place!

Yelp
LULU IS AMAZING!! she made our experience so great! her friendly attitude and welcoming service was unforgettable. it was our first time here and she made us feel like regulars. we will definitely be back because of her and of course the great good! Su Casa management- Lulu deserves a million dollars!

Yelp
Happy Cinco De Mayo! This place was poppin for the holiday! We came in for dinner and sat at the bar. The service wasn't the best, due to how busy it was, but what do you expect for a holiday? We ordered the Carnitas Plate served with beans and rice and it was very yummy. However, it says it comes with "all the fixings" which consisted of two sliced tomatoes, 1 lime and a few shreds of cilantro. I guess I should of asked, but I was expecting sour cream? guacamole? salsa? We asked for a side of sour cream...it was $3 extra. With out it, it would of been very dry. The margaritas are good and not pre-made, which makes the price more worth it!

Yelp
The food and the service from Lulu was incredible. We will be back!! We loved the boys a, guacamole and steak tacos.

Nancy L.

Yelp
Grateful for a Mexican restaurant that still includes free chips and salsa. The chips were great and were fresh, and the salsa had a nice kick to it. Restaurant only had one stall in bathroom which made it a pretty long line. The restaurant is cute appearing but people come around trying to take your photo for money which was kind of annoying when trying to eat dinner. The food was okay. Not classically the flavorful meal you think of when you think Mexican food. Service was good. Always refilled our waters and chip basket Prices are reasonable

Matthew S.

Yelp
This was really delicious to me... got the shredded beef tacos. Margarita was also really good and strong

Yelp
It was rather busy and they were able to get us in pretty quick. The service was mediocre, but the food was pretty good. It wasn't me the best Mexican I've had, but it's definitely located in the right spot and it's part of the Uno pizza family. I would go again, but not as a special event in Chicago. This is more of a franchise feel versus a local spot. Beers and alcohol drinks are a little pricey for what you got.

Yelp
Stopped in with 10 min until the kitchen closed and ordered some steak tacos and a steak burrito... wasn't bad and wasn't terrible for a few minutes before closing. The service was great and the beer was ice cold. Worth a stop if you're looking for a quick bite to eat with reasonable prices.

Yelp
Two parts to this review... First the food and service were great, we had fajitas and they were fantastic! Margs are strong and not too sweet! Second part- We were visiting from out of town and my daughter left a bag under the table with souvenirs she had gotten. I called the next day and they confirmed they had them. They MAILED our items to us!!!! Then would not let us pay for postage. The moral of this post is these are good, honest people who went above and beyond!!! My Daughter is thrilled to have her items back! Thank you Su Casa I wish all restaurants and People were like you!

Josh F.

Yelp
We walked in and it was loud with people laughing, talking and screaming over each other. It was more of a bar than a restaurant. Then we had two waiters take our order and we still got our food before we got the waters we ordered. The steak in my steak chimichurri tacos was gray and the taste was okay. We asked to move to a corner in order to get away from one of the screaming tables and a man stated he couldn't do it even though no one was sat there between the time we asked to move and the time we half finished the food and left. If you want a place to be able to have a pleasant meal then go elsewhere. P.S. - Make sure to double check that your card was given back to you because she forgot to put ours back and I said we need our card back and she told me it was in the check holder. When I told her it's not she found it right next to her and with a hateful attitude gave me our card.

Yelp
Great cadilac margaritas chips and salsa hit perfect fresh and everything was homemade Had bartender was great! Chicken enchiladas to die for and ima hard customer to please ! Picky eater from California i loved this place
google avatar

Rahul G.

Yelp
Great food and service. The friendly server did multiple check backs to make sure everything was ok. She even gave us a little history tour of the place and how it was an old stable converted to a restaurant. They even have a bar. The restaurant has the old Mexican restaurant vibe.
google avatar

Victoria F.

Yelp
We did a take out late one night and we had no complaints! The service was quick and friendly. We just split a chicken quesadilla and it was fabulous! The chicken was perfectly seasoned and not dry at all! Definitely a great place for a quick bite!
google avatar

Ramona G.

Yelp
We randomly stopped here for drinks during our Chicago trip, we were just trying to find a chill bar to go to off of Miracle Mile. The staff was nice at Su Casa. We just sat at the bar and ordered margaritas and beer. They served us chips and salsa to go with it. Not a bad place to go for drinks.
google avatar

Amelia B.

Yelp
Authentic feel with an interesting history. Came here on a Friday at 6:30 and it was quick to get seated with a part of 4. Free chips and salsa for each table. Enjoyed the chicken fajitas and it was plenty to take leftovers home. A friend got the chicken enchiladas and thought they were good but was a little disappointed at the portion. Overall great experience, great prices, and great service.

Yelp
Mi Casa Mexican was just okay. I had the chicken flautas and fajitas, both looked good but were kinda missing flavor. Not bad, but not super memorable either.

Hībrid E.

Yelp
recently visited this restaurant with my mom, and unfortunately, we didn't have the best experience. The only fountain drinks available were Sprite and Pepsi, but they did have margaritas. The guac and chips were fresh, and the service was decent. We both ordered steak tacos, but they weren't great -- they left a strange aftertaste and even made me feel a little sick. The biggest issue was that I found mold on one of my tacos. They did remove the price of one taco for the inconvenience, but considering how serious mold is, I personally feel they should have comped the entire meal. Definitely disappointing
google avatar

Becky W.

Yelp
The chicken flautas were rock hard and the chicken was dry, the nachos were just ok. The chicken fajitas were not sizzling, not hot (just warm) and the chicken was still dry. We were just really disappointed.

Yelp
Tacos & Tamales Class @ Su Casa www.bucketlister.com **10/10 Stars - A Must-Do Experience!** The Tacos and Tamales Class at Su Casa was an absolute blast! Oscar and Cheque were super patient and knowledgeable, giving us the history of & guiding us through making delicious tamales. Margarita, our server, kept the margaritas flowing and the vibes high. For an amazing price, we enjoyed chips and salsa, drinks, three tacos, and got to eat the tamales we made. The class was so much fun--we were laughing so hard that the people in the restaurant wanted to join in! This wasn't just a cooking class--it was a party! If you're looking for a fun, delicious, and unforgettable experience, Su Casa is the place to be. We're already planning our next visit!

Yelp
I saw the reviews for Su Casa and was a little worried at first because the reviews varied from loving to strongly disliking Su Casa. I fall on the loving spectrum! Ambiance - the exterior AND interior, contrary to a review I read, are quite unique. The restaurant is set in a 19th-century carriage house, and the ambiance as such reflects that character. It is not a modern, small plate, fine dining experience, but that's what makes it so great. The salsa that comes with the chips is spicy, flavorful, and bold. We ordered a queso as well, and it perfectly hit the spot. My fiancé got the chicken fajitas, which he would recommend but does say they weren't mind blowingly different, but were perfect for what we wanted that night - really good (and as close to authentic in our area) Mexican food. I thoroughly enjoyed my cheese and onion enchiladas - very large portion size and the sauce was DELICIOUS. Overall, this restaurant was very casual, relaxed, and delicious. Don't go here expecting to have something different and modern, but go for a warm hug of comfort food.

Katie L.

Yelp
Food was pretty good, service was mediocre, but the worst part of the night completely spoiled the experience. I saw a cockroach on the floor. Woof! I'm grossed out. I would be concerned about the cleanliness and hygienic practices.

Dorothy F.

Yelp
This restaurant has great Mexican food that is truly authentic. Every item we had was delicious. It reminded me so much of my mother's cooking. They don't alter the cuisine to accommodate tourists. They remain true to Mexican flavors. The margaritas we had we great and had a robust flavor (not lemonade). Thank you, NOELIA, for your wonderful and attentive service. You made us feel so welcome!!! I look forward to returning on our next visit to Chicago.

Yelp
2 stars is generous. I only really come on here when it is so bad that I feel the obligation to warn others. First of all the service was horrible. Our hostess didn't even acknowledge us and had no kind greeting, we had no idea she wanted us to follow her and didn't provide us with enough menus (which we never got any more of). Our waitress was nice but she we disappear for incredibly long amounts of time. The restaurant wasn't even close to full either. Though there weren't many other staff so I guess she was doing a lot of heavy lifting. A man who seemed to be some sort of owner or manager (white hair grey shirt) was incredibly rude to some customers at a near by table, having an attitude, then raising is voice, and then being annoyed when they had asked him for some more water (which seems to be sparse here). The ambiance is what you'd expect from a typical American-Mexican restaurant. Some flickering lights here and there. One of the TVs was changed to show the channel index while we were trying to get a good look at the Olympics. Which didn't get fixed because it seems that staff is sparse. Lastly the food was mediocre at best. My rice was either overcooked or undercooked because there were multiple hard bits. The meet had multiple hard bits too, with very little seasoning. My brother reported that his beans had a weird flavor, almost like they had been expired or something. The only "ok" foods were the salsa and queso (this is the only redeeming factor, I'm being kind by adding a star for this). I do NOT recommend this place if you are used to original, well seasoned Mexican food. If you are unfamiliar to delicious spices and warm homemade Mexican meals, then this is the place for you. I think it's no coincidence that most of the other customers were either Europeans or old people.

Yelp
We are visiting from Texas and gotta say the food and Maria's service is OUTSTANDING!! Classic hole on the wall vibe nice decor. Drinks are great as well !

Javier L.

Yelp
The food was great and was quickly seat and food came fast. The food was hot, fresh, and very delicious. There were some empty tables, but most were full showing the people's opinion on the restaurant. Lulu our server was so sweet and enthusiastic. She often checked up on us and took our orders quickly. It was a great experience at Su Casa I will remember this place and eat here often.

Yelp
My wife and I always hunt for great Mexican food. This is not where you want to go. Food is tasteless, or I suddenly came down with Covid and lost my taste. Place is ok, and the margaritas are fine. Just too many options to spend time here...move on.

Joseph B.

Yelp
My wife and I have frequented Su Cass EVERY time we visit Chicago. This quaint restaurant is not only authentic, but their food is delicious and their margaritas are potent and tasty. We both really enjoy their table-side guacamole, so fresh and yummy. The service is phenomenal, as their staff, which includes Lucy, Rosa, and Margarita, are all charming and efficient. Best Mexican restaurant in town ! You will NOT be disappointed. We shall return....

Rick Z.

Yelp
Went to what was supposed to be a "tamale making class". It wasn't not even close. BUT fun was had the hostess is amazing! It was a fun time out with a good friend.
google avatar

Capricia T.

Yelp
What can they improve? Everything. The physical restaurant itself was quaint, cutesy. But the tacos, nor my margarita hit the mark. It was just barely above edible, with edible being the lowest.
google avatar

Phillip G.

Yelp
Su Casa has been a river north staple for years! Walk through those doors and your. transported! Good food, good spirit!
google avatar

Jayme L.

Yelp
Amazing food!! Staff is super great too. But the food ahhhhh we had tacos carnitas and the meat was melt in your mouth amazing
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
I am from LA so maybe I am just used to Bette Mexican food. But this place was pretty bad. Margaritta didn't taste like a Margaritta. Food was pretty bad. Chips were stale. Salsa was amazing and spicy. Staff was friendly. Other than that it's pretty bad.
google avatar

Max T.

Yelp
The food was quite terrible, we ordered cheese dip and it came out looking like cheese dip scented candle.I also ordered a chicken cheese and rice and it came out looking like "rotisserie chicken and rice" The 1 star goes to the service. The floors were also quite dirty and there was a sticky substance on the floor.
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
My sister, niece and I came here on a cold day in December. It was a last minute trip, so we couldn't get into any of the restaurants we walked past, and finally we were starving and saw Su Casa. We love us some Mexican food, so we stopped in. My sister and I both ordered chicken nachos, and my niece ordered some sort of chicken or fish. I'd say the nachos were pretty good, but not the best I've had. The margarita was very good. Cute decor. Old Building. It was a fun time, but I'm not sure I would venture back here with all the places to eat in Chicago.
google avatar

Danni A.

Yelp
I was craving Mexican food so I asked the gentleman at the hotel where I can find Mexican food. They warned me not to go to this place but I decided to give them a chance and I regret it so much! I was so disappointed with their "Mexican food". It was plain, cold and just not it. I suggest going else where unless you want to leave with a sad face like me.

jody s.

Yelp
My family have been going here over 40 years Sad to see the decline in service I was there last night July 24 8 ish not busy at all I said at the bar, the bartender said what would you like? I said, a glass of water and a margarita water never came. I ordered food never offered chips and salsa, which is usually a staple and comes automatically. I finish my food. She took my plate away never checked on me. See if I need anything else. How was the food , just stood there at the bar with the waitress took my plate away dropped off my check I said are you closing? She said no I said do I need to leave? I was gonna order something else. I was hungry maybe another margarita and appetizer she said, do you want chips and salsa she said you want so I said never mind. Zero service gets zero tip I'll never go back
google avatar

Emma M.

Yelp
The ambiance was really cool - the restaurant has been open since the 1960s and is located in a 1867 carriage house. Causal, fun vibe. Seated quickly and have attentive service. The server brought over waters and chips and salsa right upon greeting us. Thick chips and flavorful salsa. Tasty vegetarian options. My group of 5 adults enjoyed our food and drinks. This isn't a Michelin star restaurant, but that is what I liked about it. A comfortable environment with comfort food and tasty margaritas.
google avatar

Steven S.

Yelp
In Chicago from Los Angeles for a wedding and Su Casa was a few steps away from our hotel. Good looking restaurant with pleasant ambience but the food was inedible. Maybe we've been spoiled by the magnificent Mexican restaurants in L.A. but this was beyond belief. We were served luke-warm food that was 3 clicks under Stouffer's frozen dinners. Older staff was tired and uncaring. How they've managed to survive since 1963 I'll never know but lesson learned: Read the Yelp reviews and (sorry Chicago) stick to deep dish pizza, Garrettpopcorn, and Chicago hot dogs when visiting the windy city.
google avatar

Ashley N.

Yelp
We walked in and were greeted immediately but told to wait a few minutes. We were sat and they brought waters immediately along with salsa and chips. The salsa is simple but spicy and good. We ordered table side guacamole and queso to start, along with cocktails. I love table side quac as it's catered to the table. She brings out a huge molcajete with very small portion of guacamole that was made who knows where. All I know is that it was NOT made table side. To be honest, it looked like it was half eaten but I'm hoping that wasn't the case. The server never came back to take our order. We flagged her down finally and placed our orders. We also asked for silverware and napkins at this time as we did not have any. We both had fajitas. I had steak and he had mushroom. The mushroom had a very odd taste to them but I have no idea what it was. He mentioned they were greasy which they were and so was all of the food such as the rice. My steak was a bit tough. The elote had no seasoning or anything on it. Just a basic piece of corn. I am puzzled how somebody can make corn taste bad. Overall, we would not go back. I really wish I would have looked at the reviews before coming. There really isn't anything good about this place. It was not authentic. It's overpriced and the service sucked. We literally had to ask for everything. I don't mean that we are needy. I mean we had to ask for things that she can see such as more water and our check as our dishes are stacked high but no one has picked them up off the table. There's so many amazing places to eat in Chicago. Sorry but this is not one of them.
google avatar

Modesta F.

Yelp
While visiting in Chicago we ate at Su Casa Restaurant and had the queso fundido. It was very well made and our server Margarita was very pleasant and welcoming us to Chicago for our first time. Thank you for making our eating experience at this location very good.

Jose L.

Yelp
If I could rate this place zero stars I would but the food was bland, no taste at all the only thing that was good was the drinks, the service was okay, as a Hispanic out of all of the Mexican restaurants I've been to this is the absolute worst

Imani F.

Yelp
I am here right now, December 27, 2024 the hostess was so rude. I asked for another chair to be added to my 4 top table which only had 3 tables. She said no and walked away. When the waiter came he kindly gave us another chair. Hostess Kelly was disrespectful and rude to my family. The waiter was very kind and accommodating. We enjoyed our food. I had a salad, and my family tacos.

Anonymous P.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in over the weekend. I ordered fish tacos and my husband ordered nachos. The fish (red snapper) seemed old and had an unusually strong smell and taste. The waitress kindly switched out my tacos for the nachos, which my husband and I both found to be delicious! We'd definitely visit again! Good service! Cute decor!
google avatar

Franke H.

Yelp
Came with a friend my favs I got was the shrimp enchilada, beef taco, and the fresh guac, least fav was the chicken enchilada and pumpkin margarita. The margarita was cool but they just put pumpkin spice on the rim lol so I wouldn't call that a pumpkin margarita lol but I definitely downed it. I would dine here again though the service was nice and quick. Desserts weren't on the menus but I got a fried tortilla with vanilla ice cream.
google avatar

Damion S.

Yelp
Pretty good food, drink prices are pretty decent. Chips and salsa were great as well. Just make sure you have a cold beer with it.

Taryn F.

Yelp
If you're thinking about going here, keep on walking! Canned chicken and steak wasn't real steak (not even satire). This was the worst restaurant I have ever been to.

Maria B.

Yelp
A must stop when visiting Chicago. Caesar was the most genuine person we meet on our trip. We visit the restaurant 4 times out of our 5 day week trip because of him. We have an amazing time anyone we stepped in.

Laura J.

Yelp
This place is awesome. One of more authentic Mexican restaurants in the area and one of the only that still gives complementary chips and salsa! The service has always been great and I love the ambiance inside. This is a place I typically bring friends and family to when they're visiting from out of town.

Yelp
First time at this restaurant, the food was delicious and authentic Mexican cuisine, the wait staff was very attentive and polite, and the decor was like you were in Mexico,... Liked it alot .... Also great prices on the food... See you soon

Georgia ..

Yelp
Love this little gem! Delicious food, gracious service, and a real value. The nachos with shredded beef were spectacular. Recently had the chili rellenos. Super yummy.
