Google
Please do not buy kaybee Indian mangoes. Looks beautiful but as soon as you cut every mango is bad and inedible inside. Bought dusseri box today for $42.99 and none of the mango is edible. Save your money, don't shop Indian mangoes from here.

This is the best grocery store in Houston! Fresh vegetables, variety of products and everything you have on your grocery list is available here. Looking at some of the Indian foods just made me so happy. And you get Amul Cheese too! Definitely recommend this store.

Smarika

Google
They got everything that any desi would need. And apparently the prices are too adorable rather than other Indian stores

Google
Have been shopping here for too long and the experience has been consistent. We are able to find everything we come for and prices are comparable to nearby grocery stores. Sometimes they also run specials. We love the sugarcane juice we get during warmer months. Of course there's room for improvement which probably they are working on hopefully.

I like the the store , they have really good price compare to Austin. My 3 star for the restroom. I don't understand why indian stores don't care about the restroom. They are using it but for customers they posted out of order. Please don't do that. You guys are the best so make sure you have nice restroom also open for customer.

They use to be really good but over the years the quality of the food has gone down hill. All their packaged snacks from India are stale like the chips , nuts , peanuts , rice flakes etc. They smell really bad specially the chakoli ( gram flower ) snack it smells like DALDA ( not even any refined oil). I notice they have expanded their kitchen menu and I saw a lady walking out of the kitchen with the dog in her arms, she saw me at the counter and went inside with the do. Through the glass window I could see she was still standing with the dog in her arms while the dough was being made. A high level of hygiene should be expected and maintained, while they claim to be authentic hygienic vegetarian food.

Google
I would like to give it less than a 1 rating. They are not nice. They stare at black people funny. If you purchase items and open to try it and you don’t like it they won’t take it back. Do not purchase the Ponds powder for ladies there. The Sandalwood especially, it has no scent. They are deceptive in this way. Don’t loose your money.

Yelp
I've enjoyed shopping at Subhlaxmi Grocers over the years, but not anymore. During my latest visit, there was a guy behaving strangely outside the store. I felt uncomfortable as I approached the store because this guy had what I would describe as a bad vibe and menacing look. Usually, I just walk right in, but this time, I almost turned around and went back to my car. The people who own and work at the store are not at fault here, of course, but generally, it's not a good look when a customer feels uneasy walking into a store of any kind. Typically, my purchases at the store look different each time. In the past, I would buy Chandrika Soap or Mysore Sandal Soap and other items. I've also bought shampoo here before. This time, I bought Medimix Soap. Food-wise, I selected crispy beetroot chips with sea salt, a can of Thums Up soda, a can of Limca soda (lemon lime flavor, but doesn't taste like Sprite), and one samosa with chutney from the cooked food counter. I thought the woman working near the counter was totally disinterested in customer service, and I would say the whole experience at Subhlaxmi was off-putting and subpar. For this reason, I would probably skip this store in the future and get Indian groceries from Keemat or any of the other stores in the area which basically sell the same products.

Yelp
June 10th 2025 I buy 2 box of Indian Alpanso Mangoes for $ 70, All Mangoes look good from outside but when cut at home, all 24 Mangoes were very bad. I don't blame Subhlaxmi but the should take customers complaints seriously & stop sale this mangoes.

Yelp
Good indian grocery store with decent pricing. It definitely gets too crowded on the weekends, making it hard to navigate with a cart. They carry many varieties of dry and frozen foods and have fresh sugarcane juice and samosas for purchase at the back as well

Yelp
Man, worst experience ever! Got a sack of onions, 25lbs. Normally, these onion bags are good elsewhere, but I decided to grab one here. Big mistake! Surprise, surprise--90% of the onions were rotten. Took the bag and the bill to the store to show them and ask for a refund, but first, the manager or whoever was in charge didn't even bother to show up. Then this girl at the billing counter checked and came back saying they can't do anything for produce. I've had way better service elsewhere, so Subhlaxmi Grocers ain't cutting it for me.

Yelp
Came by after eating at Shiv Sagar since the market is in the same shopping center. Bought a couple of kulfi as it was hot in Houston. Lots of fresh produce and prices seem reasonable. Plenty of parking and right off 59 in the Ghandi District. Love those marsala smell!

Yelp
I am not an Indian food expert. I was born in Japan. But the Japanese really like curry rice. I am a big fan of both Indian and Japanese curry. I often buy curry paste here. I really enjoy a variety of products. I heard that turmeric is good for our health. There are a lot of turmeric bags here. Overall, It is located near my apartment. I like here.

Yelp
I was probably Subhlaxmi's biggest supporter even though I live in College Station. For years, I avoided going to nearby stores, even in Cypress, because I believed in this grocer's high quality and ethical business practices. Today, I've been greatly disheartened. See the attached photos. I encouraged my friend to purchase two boxes; I, too, purchased 2 boxes of Alphonso mangoes on Thursday (5/16). This is an annual practice for us; we don't mind the drive. However, 35 out of the 40 odd mangoes turned out to be rotten. 150 dollars literally thrown down the drain. This is unacceptable, bordering on unethical behavior. Never again will I drive to Subhlaxmi, or provide poor advice to my friends. Those who visit this place, beware!

Yelp
I've shopped here occasionally over the past several years and have seen it go from a small niche store to a much larger and more comprehensive store with a nice selection of items for your Indian cooking, including cookware and utensils, remedies, fresh samosas, puffs, and bhondas. It was always ok. Now it's actually pretty good. Very helpful staff.

Yelp
Excellent store for spices, Indian pickles like achaar, and the only place I can find fresh curry leaves!

Yelp
I placed an order with subhalaxmi worth $90 on March 10, 2021 (order #1615413412) and shipping was $23.94. It is now April 8 (almost a MONTH) and i have not received any response I emailed ON several occasions and called MANY many times and the phone keeps ringing, no voice mail, no reply. What kind of operation is this??? Please CONFIRM you are canceling my order as per my request dated March 23, and REFUND Any money you charged on the card

Yelp
Animesh (probably spelled that wrong sorry) he was so nice and friendly. I was looking for a specific shampoo and conditioner and I asked if they had some in the back. He went out of his way to look and open some boxes to see if it was what I was looking for and even asked another worker to make sure he hadn't missed it. Very friendly definitely recommend this place! Excellent customer service

Yelp
I placed an order worth $80 on april 20 with subhalaxmi. It is apr 24 and i have not received it yet. I tried emails and called many times but no one from the store has responded. Is this a scam?

Yelp
Most of the staff members are friendly, courteous and helpful. However, there is one fellow masquerading with an air of authority and arrogance! He wears no name tag. When asked for his name, he sidetracks that query. He is thin and short. So, I think of him as the Midget of Subhlaxmi - or just "Midget." Unlike other staff members, the Midget is not at all Customer Oriented. If you are looking for a specific item and do not find it on the shelves, you ask him about it, he recites a litany of "why that is not possible" accompanied by demeanour and body language tantamount to "You are not worth my time." You ask other staff members, and they will respond with prompt assistance in finding it and if it is not found, they go straight to the heart of the matter and tell you when the item is expected. At a recent gathering of expatriates/NRIs/PIOs (80-100 attendees), Indian grocers were the topic of conversation at my table (10-12 friends). Everyone knew who this Midget. They all agreed that he was a very unpleasant fellow. Someone said, "He is a real jerk." I usually give a 5-star rating to Subhlaxmi. But because of this Midget, I can give only three stars - and that will be the case whenever the Midget manifests himself on the shop floor.

Yelp
I have been a resident of Greater Houston for about 10-12 years now. I have been buying my Indian groceries from a select few stores. One of them has been Subhlaxmi Grocers. I had always found their stock dependable, and their staff very courteous and ever-ready to help. I usually have a fixed shopping list. In the past Subhlaxmi Grocers carried all those items. However, on my last visit, I was astounded that several items on my list were not to be found on their shelves. I brought that to the notice of one staff member. Instead of taking responsibility and remedying my issue, he became very confrontational and defended the lack of items on their shelf. I picked up whatever I needed. When I proceeded to the check-out, the woman manning the till was one sore bitch who suffered from an acute case of superiority complex. None of the old familiar helpful staff was visible. Probably the ownership has changed hands. If they do not come up with an apology for the above, and take responsibility for the steady stocks, I will be downgrading their store to "greylist."

Yelp
Love this store! Everything you need to cook great Indian food and across the parking lot from my favorite Indian restaurant, London Sizzler.

Chic L.

Yelp
I love this place, I come here to get snacks, tea whatever you see they have interesting to try. It is just nice to have a place like this when you crave Indian flavor. I went to college in Singapore, and fell in love with the Indian food. Ppl here is nice, I just asked someone randomly, he taught me how to cook the milk tea, very patient and kind. And they are busy all the time when I go, so they are quick to wrap up. Keep up good business, we'll support you and go thru it together!

Yelp
I like this store! I don't know why all the negative reviews. The variety and the size is impressive.

Yelp
So I LOVE The Indian culture, ESPECIALLY THEIR FOOD. So when I finally got the time to come here (because I don't live near by) I was super excited! I was thinking about all the neat stuff I was going to get and how I was going to go home and cook some good ole Indian curry shrimp. as I navigated through the store and was looking for something in particular, I tried to get some of the employees attention but they ignored me. I had to literally walk up on one of the employees (in a very friendly way) and ask did they have this particular thing I was looking for.. she looked at me like "What is you talmbout"... i felt totally ignorant like maybe I said it wrong.. so then come to find out, (like a light bulb went off), what I was looking for is not pre made as i thought it was. By the time I figured that out, i had already spent 30 minutes running in circles around the store. So after all, I just decided on one item and decided to go to HEB down the street to get what I needed.. I bought an instant Chai tea Latte thing. The end :-D

Tan S.

Yelp
I bought til chikki yesterday! Me and my husband was eating and then I saw worms coming out of it. I was totally shocked. I have already seen that they have higher prices for coffee and many other products as compared to other stores. But this kind of thing is intolerable. They don't keep expiry dates on the SWAD products and so you don't get to know if it is already expired and buy and find a work! great

Bryan H.

Yelp
Very poor service. They had mangoes marked for $5.99 but wanted $6.99, when I questioned why, the owner said that this is the price and if you don't like it leave! Which we did. PARIVAR or many other better options that are run by GOOD people. Not this one.

Nutan P.

Yelp
Visited the store last week. Two foreign workers who were restocking shelf opened mustard oil bottles and straight away drank a sip out of it. Check the seal before you buy anything.

Yelp
The staff especially the management don't know what the deals are. They are rude. Recently I purchased a small puja product that had a price tag of 99 cents. I needed help getting it off the display and the staff who helped me confirmed the price. Then I went in line to chick out and there was a lady she is part of the management I think. She ring it up for $1.59 each. I was shocked and asked her to re check the price. She says ya it's 99 cents each but was ringing it up for $1.59. Makes no sense ?? Neither did it for me. She was rude and couldn't care less. I left not wanting to make it more uncomfortable. So they basically stole my money from me and were confusing and rude. I only go there coz of convenience.

Yelp
I grew up here in Houston and always ran errands here for my mom. Now, I come here and I can't believe Subhlaxmi Grocers expanded! It's incredible to see they have a kitchen where you can buy fresh khandvi and dhokla! I love it!! I highly recommend this grocery store! They have everything from Pooja stuff, wedding stuff, and groceries!

Angela O.

Yelp
This is the location off of Hillcroft on 6606 Southwest Freeway. I was looking for tamarind paste and was so happy to finally find it here! Not an easy product to find. Nice store, tons of varieties of products, from frozen, to dry, to perishables and vegetable. I didn't have much time to take a real good look at everything, but I will return for sure to get you all more details. Didn't even know it was literally nearby my office. No I have a nearby go to! Please check it out. Give them a chance and see for yourself.

Yelp
These guys are really taking advantage of the corona virus. This was my 2nd time to visit this place. Last month, i signed up for the rewards card which was cool because they offeered discounts for their members but ever since Houston was hit by Corona, these Bast... stop honoring the rewards card. How cheap could anyone get. Unethical and criminal to take advantage of a pandemic. Shame on you people... never going back.....

Rustom S.

Yelp
Love this place. Fresh produce, great customer service and now they have a chaat station. They make fresh chapatis and parathas. Which is great.

Sanjib M.

Yelp
Becareful about the stuff you purchase. If you missed they are not going to return you back.

Kamal T.

Yelp
My favorite Indian grocery store in town! They have an awesome staff, great products, a fresh food bar, and their Indian mangoes are delicious! Definitely recommend coming here. Great service from staff and owner!

Sameer K.

Yelp
The best home made indian snack in Houston hands down! If youre looking for hard to find specialty ingredients for cooking or something special to gift someone to remind them of the beauties of India look no further. Animesh and his wife are sweethearts as well and always helpful

B D.

Yelp
So great to have a happy, friendly Indian grocery store in Houston. They have the best snacks in the city. They are eager to help - bring special finds back from India to the US. The dahi-vadas and dhoklas are better than anything else we can find here.
google avatar

Nitin T.

Yelp
ok. they are selling 11 mangoes instead of dozen... and take it or leave it.

Poonam P.

Yelp
They do have variety of items in their kitchen but they don't have sense of talking to their regular customers.I called them to order a to go and waited for 5 mins so that I could get the right person on call.I asked about menu and the reason why the same item costs different on different day.I might have taken a minute to think and order my food and the person for whom I have waited for 5 mins tells us "Can you please make up your mind".If you don't have a patience to wait for 2 mins for someone who waited for your service for 5 mins then I would suggest find something else to do.Or if you want to continue with your kitchen with the same stinking attitude, then god bless you!

Lal D.

Yelp
Subhlaxmi has the best Dhokla and Samosa in town, I think this is only store in Hillcroft area which carries my favorite TEA LopchU-Darshan Wadhwa

Ani M.

Yelp
Never ever ever ever buy perishables from this store. This includes frozen vegetables. This is the second time I am having this experience - I refrained from commenting the first time around but now it's a pattern. The frozen vegetables are clearly freeze thawed (not sure how many times) during transport. You can tell because the thawing leads to condensation and when the packet frozen back up the vegetables inside clump together in a block of ice. This is exceedingly unhygienic and potentially dangerous because bacteria can grow in the thawed out packets, and the spores /toxins they generate can survive cooking and lead to food poisoning. In a normal grocery store these packets would be discarded but this is an Indian store so hygiene and rules are pretty much out of the window. The last dish I made with their "frozen" vegetables was horribly rancid and I had to throw out the entire dish after eating a sampling. This is borderline criminal and I hope I don't fall sick now. Someone in Houston food inspection should inspect their freezers and open some random packets.

Priyanka I.

Yelp
A good variety of most of the Indian groceries available and that we need. However, please read the labels for dates of expiry.. They continue to stock stuff packed in 2013 which as the label states should be used within a year. When brought up with the staff at the billing counter they looked lost and blank..didn't even assure me that they will check their stocks.. WATCH OUT FOR EXPIRED PRODUCTS. What was impressive was the variety of Indian handicrafts they had.. A must visit if you are looking for Indian gifts! ( lucky that they dont have a date of expiry ;)

Gourav N.

Yelp
This store is a hidden gem for Indian Groceries. They have almost everything you can think of. The Staff is cooperative and helpful. This is a must visit store if you are looking for some spiritual stuff.

Mike B.

Yelp
This is one of the cheap stores that sells bad products. You can find many products on the shelf that are way past their expiry dates. I have seen some products on the shelf that are 6 months past their expiry date. The management is completely indifferent about it. Even, they don't honor their published discount offers. I wonder how they operate in today's competitive business landscape with this attitude!

Bruce W.

Yelp
I ordered 10 mangoes. 3 were spoiled. They did not have the courtesy to respond to my email regarding the problem.
google avatar

Ankit K.

Yelp
Nice store. New in Houston. Lots if varieties. One of the best Indian grocery store in Houston.

Arun C.

Yelp
I have been to hundreds of indian stores and this one is the most expensive i have ever been to. Prices are 1.5-2 times higher than other stores.

Yelp
I love this store! I'm a a white geezette from a town in Deep East Texas with a tiny budget and love to cook. My neighbor from Delhi swaps food with me and her cooking makes my spirit sing! The difference between her food and every other cuisine known to me is the spices. One day I was craving chicken curry and couldn't imagine asking her to cook for me so I went to Hillcroft and started hitting random Indian looking stores. Most of the people at most of the stores were polite, but not helpful. The last one was Sub. Talk about saving the best for last! The clerk showed me what spices to buy and told me a good website for the recipe! So kind and patient! And hospitable! Since then, I have gone to Sub about every other week fog items new to me and for staples. They have better prices on natural yogurt, beans, and unsweetened coconut than Kroger and Walmart. This store has great shopping, great prices, and most important: Great People! Can't get any better than this!

Gautam B.

Yelp
A total delight to stop by this grocery store and find so many choices for grocery! A whole range of Indian spices, ready to eat, flours, organic food, rice and fresh vegetables, tons of Indian handicrafts - the indian jhoola and temples (mandhir) were awesome !.There were unique indo-pak items, awesome produce section, and make sure you check out the Indian deserts at the store.
