Cute coffee shop with lots of pastry and breakfast sandwich options. Perfect place to sit down and people watch, the interior design is tasteful and sleek. Enjoyed the latte and breakfast sandwich, the buttermilk biscuit is flaky, buttery, and totally amazing.

Stopped by for coffee and discovered a truly outstanding breakfast sandwich (egg, sausage, jack cheese and buttermilk biscuit). High quality ingredients made the difference. It’s a small, tastefully designed space packed with people having fun. Counter service.

This coffee shop is amazing! The moment you step in, the smell of fresh coffee makes you feel right at home. The place is cozy, perfect for relaxing or getting some work done. I tried their cappuccino, and it was so smooth and creamy—just the right flavor. The pastries were fresh and delicious too. The staff is super friendly and welcoming, which makes the experience even better. Everything about this place feels thoughtful, from the decor to the service. It’s definitely a spot I’ll keep coming back to. Great coffee, great vibes!

Another Richmond favorite. I like their pastries, baked goods and desserts more so than their coffee drinks. Their sea salt chocolate chip cookies, macaroons, pecan pie, and their various sweet and savory croissants are really good. I liked their baked goods more than subrosa, it’s just accessibility, long lines and parking are recurring obstacle when coming here. Cart town street parking, stacked with long lines are rough sometimes. But kinda worth it if ya wanna treat you and yours

Ordered from out of town my for son’s birthday. Drove 1.5 hours to go pick it up from smaller town where he is training. He doesn’t like regular chocolate so ordered vanilla cake frosted w/white chocolate and raspberry filling. Got there she gave me cake with dark chocolate drizzled over it. I questioned whether it was my cake, she verbalized my order back to me perfectly. After dinner, cut cake and it was chocolate all the way through & kind of dry. Either doesn’t like military or out of town so thought she thought it was ok to do this prank.

Google
The staff was very friendly and were accommodating to our toddler. Maple scone and dirty chia were 10/10 the almond flour biscuit with jam was like 7.5/10 but gluten free treats can be tricky and it was good when taking that in consideration. Some items were a bit pricey for what they were but overall a decent value for a small business in the city

Google
It's a beautiful atmosphere! We'll decorated and the staff is very friendly. Very popular spot so expect some waits, but there's so much to walk around and look at while you wait for your food. Aaaaaand, the food is worth the wait!

Biscuits here are fantastic, sandwiches made to order are good too. 4 Stars because they only had the to-go counter available during my visit and no seatings. Expect a line on busy days.

Yelp
Sugar and Twine has my whole heart. Their staff has always been incredibly quick and kind to me - customer service is 10/10. I appreciate they now offer a beautiful and clean indoor space as well as a quick grab and go pick up window. Their iced chai (and hot chai latte) ranks as one of my favorites in Richmond, sweet not too spicy - both take care of my chai craving. Of their pastries - the blackberry biscuit was outstanding. Flakey, not dry, burst of blackberry flavor with the crystallized sugar that adds a subtle crunch, stunning. The breakfast sandwiches also perfectly pair with their drinks and pastries, a perfect symphony of flavor and texture! I take friends and family here and always recommend this place to anyone seeking out a Richmond recommendation for coffee/grab and go breakfast.

Yelp
I love Sugar and Twine. Not only for the countless memories I've had at this spot, but for their pastries too. I've enjoyed watching the evolution of this spot in the last five years. I've made friends in their old cafe, I've enjoyed countless pandemic picnics with their vegan breakfast sandwich and blueberry scones, and I've now really enjoyed their new cafe section. They still have the outdoor takeout line as an option, but if you're looking to dine in, you can enjoy your tasty pastries indoors! There is plenty of seating in their new cafe. The decor is quite similar to their old vibe, just more contemporary. I love all the delicious lighting that spills into the space and the communal table in the middle. The baristas/bakers are super efficient and willing to help you out with any questions you may have. I will admit, I am not a fan of any of the drinks I get here, so I typically only order food. You can't go wrong with a baked good from Sugar and Twine. Their best baked goods in my opinion are their scones. I love their vegan breakfast sandwich as well as their other breakfast sandwiches. Lines can get long, but with the new cafe it goes by pretty quickly.

Yelp
Coffee, and treats, while nestled indoors with loved ones? Sounds like a job for Sugar and Twine! Not too long ago, the lovely Sugar & Twine in Carytown reopened their doors to us, after remodeling their interior. This was a long-awaited move, and people all over RVA kept visiting their pick-up window while they waited for the grand re-opening. Now, instead of the pick-up window, you may come on in from the elements and enjoy a warm beverage, and perhaps a fresh breakfast sandwich. That's exactly what my husband and I did a few times this Fall. First of all, the service hasn't changed a bit- the baristas are friendly, fast, and professional. They will keep that line moving, so it never feels like a wait. Once inside, you'll see that this line forms to the left, and winds through the back of the cafe. There's a large table in the middle of the floor, flanked by bar stool style chairs. Along the right side of the cafe, under the sun's warm glow, there are several tables meant for 2 - 4 people. We chose the only open seat, but we noticed another open quickly. People don't come here to work or linger, they seem to visit with friends and family while they're eating, and then move on. There's a lot to see in Carytown! For this trip, my husband ordered a hot chocolate with an oatmeal cream pie, and I asked for a latte and a double chocolate cookie. Since we were eating there, we were served using plates and mugs, which I enjoyed. There is sunlight, our treats tempted us. Once I got started with my double chocolate cookie, I couldn't stop. I rarely eat sweets these days, and for a special treat, this one worked. There were gooey chocolate chips all throughout the chocolate cookie; while the cookie was not served warm, these chips still melted in my mouth. Someone took care to make sure this cookie was a delight! Of course, I tried my husband's oatmeal cream pie. Wow! What a soft, chewy and pleasant texture these cookies had. Sandwiched between them was the smoothest buttercream frosting. These sweet flavors and soft textures played off each other so well. I chose a latte without any flavors, so the bitterness would pair well with the chocolate cookie. I didn't want a mocha, or vanilla latte, because it would have distracted me from how great the cookie was. I made the right choice: the latte was creamy and smooth, and really did the chocolate cookie justice. My husband's hot chocolate was the perfect comfort choice for an oatmeal cream pie. The mellow sweetness of this hot chocolate was soothing, and it wasn't too sweet. The chocolate flavor really came through, and it was delicious. Opening Sugar & Twine for all to enjoy was an excellent move. The quality of service and food shines, and now, we have somewhere cozy to sit.

Yelp
I hadn't been to sugar and twine since they opened the new portion and I would highly recommend checking it out after visiting it! The atmosphere was great, and it was nice to have a spot to sit down now. It would be a good place to go and work or catch up with a friend. I got the sage and fontina croissant and like always it was so good as well as a honey latte if you were in Carytown, it's definitely a good spot for coffee.

Deidre F.

Yelp
I was told this is the best chai latte in RVA! I used to live in RVA but never came here; it was always odd to me because it was only an order window. However, now they have a full storefront and seating inside! I recently came back to RVA from Colorado and this was the place to on my list to try! My chai latte did not disappoint. I don't drink coffee so this is my drink. It was busy inside on a cold rainy Saturday. The staff was pleasant. I was shocked to see a food menu beyond pastels. There are good vegan and Gf options. This would be a nice place to meet up with friends and/or do remote work. This is a good spot but did not blow my mind. I would consider this as THE coffee spot in Carytown.

James H.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop in Cary town. I've always popped in for a quick lunch latte. Good prices and coffee's are made well. Friendly service too!

Megan F.

Yelp
Love the newly opened Carytown indoor space! A little loud and crowded overall. Great service.

Lauren M.

Yelp
One of my faves. And now that they've opened the cafe again, you've got a great space to do work, take calls, or have a quick catch-up with a friend. They're consistent, baked goods are the best quality, made from scratch, sooo delicious. Like, who in the south doesn't want a buttermilk biscuit to start the day?!?! Plus, the coffee - I'm a latte girl - is actually really good! The vegan breakfast sandwich is actually a homemade recipe jam-packed with healthy proteins, not that chemical vital wheat gluten crap they serve everywhere else. Plus, it's on focaccia! The muffins thoooo - the blackberry brown sugar will change your life! You literally won't eat another muffin. Imagine your granny's fruit pie, but with blackberries and brown sugar, and as a muffin. Seeeeriously! Plus, it's a woman-owned business and the staff is absolutely amazing. Excuse my pictures, they're trash bc I'm always picking up on the way to work and scarfing down in the car.

Joy S.

Yelp
I should've tried this place much sooner! The pastries here are amazing! I ended up getting a whole bunch so I could help support the business since the water shutdown screwed everyone all up! Everything I got tastes delicious. I got the blueberry scone, chocolate croissant, buttermilk biscuit and cinnamon bun. Great size and even yummier taste! There's a window to pick up stuff which is so convenient and then there's also an actual cafe right next to it. One of my new favorite spots for sure! Can't wait to come back!

Katie W.

Yelp
This is a very popular spot to grab a drink or snack. My partner and I stopped in one weekend, and decided to stop in for some food. We each ordered an egg biscuit sandwich. I also got a chai tea. There was a little bit of a line, but the employees seemed efficient, and we spent less than 10 minutes in the building before we got our food. There is limited seating space inside, so we took our food and found a bench down the street to eat. The biscuits were hot and very flavorful, and the chai was delicious as well. I'd definitely stop in again.

Alex A.

Yelp
Cute spot with plenty of seating (and outlets!). Local coffee. Plenty of vegan pastry options, too! I had the olive oil chocolate cake; it was exceptional. My oat milk Cortado was also great. They use Oatly. Big fan.

Gregory F.

Yelp
Carytown is better with this place around. The perfect morning hangout spot post-run club, and with a bomb Fontina/Thyme Croissant. Lots of fun pastry options and some pretty solid coffee for an affordable price - some of the pastries are sub-$3! Comfortable interior with friendly service, lots of seating space, and with an accessible window for takeout ordering if you're not feeling the whole indoors thing. Reliable and fresh :)

P.K. S.

Yelp
It's hard to mess up a mocha iced coffee (it's just chocolate coffee!), but this had to be one of my all time favorites. The flavor was exceptionally tasty - creamy and sweet but not overwhelming. They also used crystallized sugar which was an unexpected yet welcome addition. I tried out the brown butter blackberry muffin, which was outstanding! Moist and crunchy with bits of pecan throughout. The Nutella brownie was super rich and delicious. The pepperjack pretzel was more pretzel/bread than cheese. It was pretty bland and it was not my favorite. For all three pastries and a small mocha, my total was ~$15. I went around 11am on a Friday and there were already several people in the queue, but my order was ready in less than 10 minutes. I will be back for the coffee and muffins!

Connie W.

Yelp
Love this place!! I came around 3pm on a Sunday and the pastry case was nearly empty :,( I got the hot chocolate with oat milk and it was so smooth and not overly sweet. I also got a vegan gf banana chocolate chip muffin. It was soo good, exactly what I needed, and I could barely tell that it was vegan or gf!! There were lots of tables to do work at but it was pretty crowded when I went. Need to come earlier and try more of their pastries next time!

Alex O.

Yelp
better than i expected! i got their matcha latte and it was so smooth and creamy. their vegan breakfast sandwich on focaccia was perfectly salted and the pinto bean patty went really good with it! i've never had a bean-based meat substitute, and i like that it didn't try to mimic the meat and had its own flavor. they were timely with giving me my order too! the workers were all friendly. as long as you don't mind waiting outside, it's a great place to go to!

Jazlyn G.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I visited Sugar & Twine on a Saturday morning. There was a huge line around the block. Needless to say, the spot is buzzing with good reason! I enjoyed an iced lavender latte and a cheese scone. I would highly recommend coming.

Yelp
A wonderful first-time visit to Richmond introduced us -- through our bed and breakfast -- to Sugar and Twine. We flew home with a few of their amazing and perfect biscuits, but wanted more. So, thanks to the wonderful staff, we have placed several orders, the biscuits shipped with two-day delivery arrived in perfect condition...and we will continue to purchase from them whenever we can. Excellent service, the BEST cheese biscuits, and happy customers who sadly live far away....

Huria T.

Yelp
Every time I go here, I try a new coffee, and I'm never disappointed. I don't particularly like sweet coffee but they do it really well! Their Thai coffee is really strong, has two shots of espresso and drip coffee. I got their Dirty Chai today and I also really like it! I switched it up today and got a breakfast biscuit. It's just okay. Nothing mind blowing. I don't really like eggs so I won't knock off points for that. I also got a lemon bar and that's fantastic! Their service depends on what time of day you go. You'll always be waiting in a line because, well, it's just that popular! They do move pretty quickly tho. Lastly, there is not seating. It's a grab and go situation, but I think they're opening the store next to them for actual dining. I don't mind it because it's right across from the Capital One Cafe! * the prices here are GREAT!!!

Terry M.

Yelp
Small place with lots of windows and natural light. Soft green interior makes you want to stay a while. Delicious coffee and baked goods. Some vegan and gluten free options. You can move through the line quickly to order - friendly staff at the counter - but may have to wait a bit for your items and a place to sit. There is also a "to-go" window next door. Visit when you can relax and enjoy the place.

Paige S.

Yelp
I love sugar and twine! They've got delicious coffee and drinks and baked goods. Last time I got a lavender matcha latte and I really enjoyed it paired with some sweets. They don't have indoor seating and there's usually a line outside, but it's certainly worth the wait.

Kalani G.

Yelp
Stopped here on a road trip and I'm so glad I did. It's a cute place on a hipster street with delicious offerings. It's just the storefront so you're ordering at the window. There were lots of sweet and savory offerings. The focaccia that held my Turkey BLT might be the best I've ever had.

Tes T.

Yelp
Just so so good - I go here almost every weekend! The banana chocolate chip muffin is NEXT level

Jenny P.

Yelp
This was the cutest literal hole-in-the-wall coffee shop I've ever been to. Although there isn't any seating available, I kind of think it works out for the best since it's located in a really heavy foot trafficked area. Staff is super cute and kind and the drinks came out really quick. Definitely revisiting when I come back to rva

Mary-Ann L.

Yelp
Love this coffee shop. They serve really good turmeric and ginger latte which other places call "golden milk". Just the right amount of turmeric and ginger without one overpowering the other. Service is wonderful, staff is very patient in explaining what all their various pastries are. They all look delicious so I ordered 5 to go:olive oil chocolate cake (5/5, very moist not too sweet), raspberry lemon bar, oreophore (5/5, it's like they took the Oreo cookies apart, smashed the cookie parts and reformed into rounded ends sandwiching the original cream portion), snickerdoodle cookie, and almond horn. There's a line waiting, some with their dogs in tow - ambiance is very hip, trendy...

Chris C.

Yelp
The vegan breakfast sandwich was killer. The fresh bread really made the sandwich. We also had a blueberry muffin that a bit less stunning, but still good. Service was prompt and courteous. They were able to keep the impressively long line moving. As a curbside vendor, there wasn't much to the atmosphere besides the general vibe of Carry street (which is kinda hipster/trendy)

Irene M.

Yelp
New sit down space next to their walk up window. Very comfortable space. Best croissant I have ever had. Also small choice of other pastries and breakfast sandwiches. Good coffee. Quick service but always a line inside and out.

Monica K.

Yelp
Ordered an iced vanilla latte and it was worth the wait. Currently the place is just a to-go window where you wait on the curb. The line is usually long and i understand why. The cashier Kelly was a terrible smile to see and start my day. While eavesdropping in line I heard nothing but terrific conversations with every customer. It was my first visit but I can tell this place is somewhere you want to become a regular at. Pastries looked tremendous in the window and coffee came quick after ordering.

Meg L.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! I am a little hesitant writing a review because of how good this place was and the long line. There is no indoor seating and you ordered at the window. Service was very quick despite the long line. Current Hours were 7am-3pm. We ordered at 10:30am and got the last croissant of the day. My favorite thing about this place was how affordable but great the quality of food was. Their breakfast sandwiches were $5 and you pick between croissant vs biscuit (plain vs cheese), tomato vs avocado, bacon vs sausage, and cheddar vs pepper jack. They have other vegetarian sandwich options as well. I really loved the Parmesan sticks ($1) and wish I bought at least a dozen for the drive home. It was really that good. The Parmesan was crispy and the bread was nice, soft, and toasty. I bought a bunch of pastries ranging from $3-5 and I am excited to try all of them. Will definitely stop by again!

Jasmin B.

Yelp
We've been here a few times and I've tried their macarons, cookies, and biscuits. I was a fan of all of it! I believe there are plans of reopening the inside but their window ordering/payment system right now is kind of annoying with people blocking the sidewalk (there has always been a long line when I have gone.) Thankfully everything moves pretty quick but I'm looking forward to going when the inside is open.

Krystal K.

Yelp
Walked up to their window to order. Saw the ginger tumeric latte and had to try it! I ordered it iced with oat milk and it was delicious. The flavors weren't overpowering at all. Super creamy too! Not overly sweet either.

Jenny S.

Yelp
Good pastries n coffee. My go to are their croissants! Usually a long line outside so drop by when you have some downtime.

Noah C.

Yelp
Stopped by the to-go window on a Sunday and waited about 10 minutes and it was well worth it! I tried several different pastries and 2 coffees and it was under $20?! Crazy good deal for excellent food and coffee.

Katie A.

Yelp
Amazing breakfast sandwich!!! Pastries were a little disappointing. The cinnamon roll was too dense and doughy. It's entirely outdoors, which is a bit inconvenient unless the weather is nice. The only place to wait is the sidewalk -- I didn't see any benches.

Mike B.

Yelp
Try the chocolate chip sea salt cookie, you will not regret. Excellent service at a very popular place.

Rick T.

Yelp
Great coffee and buttermilk biscuits sandwiches. Pastry's aren't half bad either try em all ! To go only last few years.

Phoebe D.

Yelp
Stopped by this little cafe as we were passing through Richmond. They currently (permanently?) operate with just window ordering and no sit-down spaces, but their service is pretty fast even as they were dealing with a lot of orders. I tried an iced latte with their seasonal honey lavender syrup and the iced Thai coffee, which is a stronger option with condensed milk. The latte was good, but I found both the coffee taste and the honey lavender taste to be on the weaker side. The Thai coffee didn't exactly have the taste of a traditional Thai iced coffee, but was definitely stronger and not too sweet either. Good place to check out if you're craving coffee while walking around Carytown, and the pastries looked good also!

Leslie C.

Yelp
So happy I picked up breakfast here!!! Amazing biscuits and breakfast sandwiches. We enjoyed a sausage breakfast sandwich in a biscuit, bacon breakfast sandwich in biscuit, and a bacon breakfast sandwich in a croissant. All were fantastic! Very fresh baked good and ingredients. We also ordered blackberry biscuits. What a treat!

K C.

Yelp
They were closing and we didn't realize but instead of turning us away they gave us different, espresso variations of the coffee drinks we ordered since they had just poured out the coffee. They threw in some of the best brownies and fresh macaroons for free to boot! Wish I lived closer so I could come back to try more- specifically the maple coffee and chocolate cake.

Cassandra S.

Yelp
My son recommended this "yummy goodness" spot and it did not disappoint! I didn't particularly care for the "walk up" ordering from the outside but it was very good.

Caroline F.

Yelp
This is the type of place that makes me want to move to Richmond! I had the most fantastic $5 breakfast biscuit, but their croissants also looked wonderful. There is no inside seating and you order at a window outside. Be prepared to wait in line and then another 20 or so minutes for your order. Worth it, though!

Yousef S.

Yelp
The croissants here are amazing. They also have a good selection of loose leaf teas. The moraccan mint was my favorite and a must try for the early mornings. One downside is the inside has been closed since COVID so it's all take out.

Mathew M.

Yelp
Was intimidated by this place because there is always a line, but found out through recent experience that's it's just because there's no actual inside to speak of- you order at a window and wait around for your order. Pretty good selection of bakery items and a decent breakfast sandwich offering! Line moves quicker than you think. Will be going back to try the coffee next time!

Hannah H.

Yelp
Sugar & Twine offers espresso, coffee, tea, beer, wine, mimosas, and baked goods in the heart of Carytown. I stopped by while in the area, to pick up some items: +a Mocha +an Almond Horn +an assortment of cookies and scones I think out of the pastries, I did like the almond horn the best, as it was topped generously with slivered onions, and it had that candy-like chewiness with a bit of that flakey-ness to it. I wasn't a fan of the mocha, as it was super diluted. I do have to admit that on every visit, it has always caused me a bit of an anxiety - it's super loud, I feel rushed, and the staff expects you to know what you want once you get to the register - not much room up there to kind of check out the offerings, and there isn't much of an assistance to provide any recommendations either. So, just be decisive when it's your turn! Super limited street parking. +Almond Horn +unhelpful staff +limited street parking

Mariah R.

Yelp
My fave bakery in Richmond! Kind, courteous and efficient staff coupled with yummy treats, is a win in my book!

Thi N.

Yelp
Love their double chocolate cookie its surprisingly less sweet than their chocolate chip cookie which i prefer not too sweet. The biscuits and breakfast sandwhiches are also very delicious!

Bruce K.

Yelp
Lovely little coffee shop where I got a very good cortado in a cute mug and stayed here for about an hour to chill and relax. The shop does get a quite busy so arrive early or hover for a seat if you want one. I kept my laptop and coffee at one end of the table but no one asked to share. That's just an American thing and it's a bummer. There was plenty of room! Power outlets, wifi, comfortable seating. I liked Sugar & Twine! [Review 11792 overall, 1574 of 2019.]

Hasti M.

Yelp
The cutest, tastiest little cafe in Carytown. I'm a black coffee drinker and Sugar and Twine has superb and excellent coffee that puts a smile on your face with the first sip! They have a wide variety of fresh pastries including many vegan options. They also sell the extra pastries they have from the day before at a discounted price. I think this is the cutest and most transparent thing I've seen a cafe do! Really appreciate the honesty and gesture.

Nicole F.

Yelp
Ive been going here for breakfast for a year now on my off days, and I absolutely love it. I haven't tried every item, but every item i have tried, has never disappointed me. I must rave about their buttermilk biscuit sandwiches! And the hand pies!! I saw a pepper jack pretzel in the window today and if i weren't lactose and tolerant id buy 3!! They are also very sweet people, service is fast and if high quality! Thanks for feeding me!!

Catherine C.

Yelp
Best bakery! Coffee is superb. Pastries are delicious. Honestly everything is way better than any coffee shop/breakfast place I've ever been (trust me I've been to MANY). Seriously impressed by this place.
