Decades After The 1960 Winter Olympics, Tahoe Remains One of the Most Exciting Places to Ski | Condé Nast Traveler

"Halfway up the Disney Lift, as fine snow dusts Douglas firs and sparkles in the sun, I feel the enduring charm of one of California’s oldest ski areas—opened in 1939, shaped by early investor Walt Disney, and still one of the few major Western resorts that’s independently owned. I spend the day on the surprisingly serious Donald Duck and steep Blitzen (via the Christmas Tree Chair), then mix it up across a compact mountain with a robust 103-trail range and lift-accessed side-country, knowing the resort also manages adjacent Royal Gorge, the largest cross-country area in North America. The original lodge leans Tyrolean chalet, with tiered balconies and a big wood deck where mornings mean coffee and late afternoons a glass of wine amid old-world style and upbeat California energy. Even as a $100 million upgrade expands that beloved après deck, updates the main restaurant, replaces the nearly century-old gondola, and regrades lower terrain to cut snowmaking, the spirit here remains delightfully throwback and seriously ski-focused." - Rebecca Misner

Disney Almost Had a Ski Resort—Here's What It Would Have Been Like

"Developed after a friendship between Walt Disney and Austrian skier Hannes Schroll, who purchased the land in 1938 for $6,750; Disney invested $2,500 and, as a result, Schroll renamed Hemlock Peak 'Mt. Disney,' the site of the resort's first chairlift (the Disney Lift), which was also the first chairlift built in California. Early lift pricing was quoted as "$0.25 for a ride up or $2.00 if you wanted to ski down," noted as roughly the equivalent of $44 today. The resort has kept a playful Disney link over the years — as the resort told Travel + Leisure, "We're not telling where, but to this day, we occasionally hide a pair of Mickey Mouse ears in paintings or printed materials for the resort." The original village lodge at the mountain also appears in animated form in the Goofy short "The Art of Skiing" (1941)." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. 7 Best Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts for a Winter Getaway

"A smaller, family-owned mountain with a long history (owned since 1939) that delivers a purist alpine experience across roughly 1,650 skiable acres and terrain geared toward intermediates and advanced skiers while still offering about 17% beginner trails. Its compact scale and slopeside convenience appeal to visitors who prefer a traditional, less commercial vibe; the on-site lodge provides the most convenient slopeside lodging and perks like free gear storage. Access is possible with the Mountain Collective Pass or single-day lift tickets (rates can start around $85 but typically fall between $98 and $150 depending on timing)." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. The 7 Best Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts

"The fact that there is only one hotel simply named Hotel speaks volumes to Sugar Bowl being a local’s mountain. But the recently remodeled hotel—just steps from the lifts—does the trick with comfy modern rooms that can accommodate up to six for Wednesday to Sunday stays."

Just spent three days at the "new" Sugar Bowl and the biggest improvement is THE FOOD! Sugar Bowl has a new deck with QR codes at each outdoor table. Use your phone to place your order and food gets delivered to you. Surprisingly the system works well. On day 2, our food came out in 4 minutes (yes, we were timing). Lunch recommendations: Smash burger (yum!) Bulgogi bowl Schnitzel chicken sandwich - everyone's sleeper favorite! Outdoor fire pits are perfect for après ski drinks. Yes, they will deliver cocktails - both hot and cold - to your table. There is a new locker room below the deck for storing all your stuff. It's brand new and looks great.

This was fun. Exhausting physically for me, but a lot of fun and the resort is well maintained. After visiting a busy ski lodge I realized a busy ski lodge at the peak of ski season is not my thing. But if it's your thing, this is the place to go. They are great at what the do and the landscape is easy to navigate.

I rarely leave reviews, but my experience at Sugar Bowl was so bad that I feel obligated to warn others. From the moment we arrived, it was clear this resort has serious management and staffing issues. The front desk was disorganized and rude, no one seemed to know what was going on. We waited over an hour past check-in time for our room, with zero communication or apology. Lift lines were a complete joke. Poorly managed, ridiculously long, and made worse by constant lift breakdowns. The staff on the mountain were either nowhere to be found or totally uninterested in helping guests. Safety clearly isn’t a priority here either, I witnessed multiple near-collisions due to staff ignoring overcrowding on the slopes. This place is run like they’ve given up on even trying to deliver a decent experience. Sugar Bowl charges like a top-tier resort but delivers third-rate service at best. I will never be coming back, and I’ll be telling everyone I know to stay far away.

One star — rigid policy for unused passes. Polite but inflexible guest services. We bought in March and contacted Sugar Bowl in November before the season began with physician documentation. Both passes were (and still are) unused. Sugar Bowl approved a rollover credit for one pass only and denied any refund/rollover for the other parent’s unused pass. Guest Services later confirmed the medical program is limited to passholders who are “not physically able to ski,” and they do not offer family-level or multi-season exceptions. If you’re buying as a couple/family, don’t assume unused passes can be handled flexibly even with documentation.

Google
Unbelievable refund policy. “After August 31, 2025, all season passes are non-refundable, even if they are never used, as stated in the Terms and Conditions that YOU agreed to during the purchase process.“ most of us do not read terms and conditions. But with these petty people at sugar bowl, you absolutely should. The resort is closed for another 2 months which leaves a lot of time for something to happen. My recommendation, don’t buy early. Actually find another resort.

Was told the local student price will be the same for the season and we can buy at anytime. Prices ended up going up. Another mom talked to Sugar bowl and able to get the original price but Sugar Bowl is not accommodating for everyone. Next year, I will not be buying local student tickets for my child.

$45 for a single day boot rental?!?! 45?!!!! For boots that cost $100 brand new. GREED GREED GREED!! I left my boots behind and had to rent. I’m never getting another season pass here. EVER.

Google
Very unreasonable staff. We witnessed an employee on a clear power trip, confiscating a guest’s ticket without justification. Left a bad impression and wouldn’t return.
