Excellent brunch on the Square.
Sugar Cakes Patisserie is more than just a French bakery and cafe. It's pretty much a full-service restaurant too, serving breakfast plates, crepes, Eggs Benedict, omelettes, salads, soup, quiche, sandwiches, and entrees including crab cakes and ribeye steak. Being a patisserie, they also have an outstanding selection of pastries and sweets from chocolate eclairs and lemon meringue tarts to Danishes and muffins.
The bakery is located on the north end of Marietta Square, in the same block as the Strand Theatre. The business opened in 2006 and is primarily a breakfast and lunch spot, closing at 3pm everyday except Friday and Saturday evening when dinner is served until 9pm. They're closed on Mondays.
The shop is clean, warm, and cozy. It can get very busy especially on Saturday mornings and Sunday (early) afternoons when the Marietta Square Farmers Market is going on. Waits aren't uncommon during peak periods. I guesstimate the interior can seat about 40-50 folks. There's additional seating on the sidewalk (and street during farmers market days) which is a fantastic place to sit during the farmers market and when the weather is nice.
I've only been during breakfast/lunchtime when you can expect to spend about $7-11 each for most items. Breakfast is served until 12pm and lunch is served from 11:30am-3pm.
I've had the Breakfast Quiche ($7.25) which is baked with honey ham and cheddar cheese. It's outstanding. It's savory and delicious. The crust is perfect. With Douceur de France around the corner, Marietta is home to the best quiche in metro Atlanta.
Another fantastic breakfast item is the Ham & Cheese Croissant ($7.00). Along with succulent slices of sweetened ham and melted American cheese, the sandwich also contains fluffy egg. This is a tasty and filling sandwich and one I highly recommend. The fresh-baked, soft, buttery, and flaky croissant is the best part, of course -- exactly what you'd expect of a fine French bakery.
My tablemates have ordered the Country French Breakfast ($7.95, scrambled eggs, bacon, sauteed potatoes, grilled tomato, croissant), Southern Hospitality Breakfast ($7.95, cheddar chive biscuit, grits, scrambled eggs, bacon/sausage patties), as well as various omelettes such as the Seafood Omelette ($11) which comes with crab, scallops, and shrimp. Everyone has enjoyed everything. They've noted the bacon isn't salty here. I'd like to try one of the aforementioned breakfast plates, Creme Brulee French Toast, or one of the Sweet Crepes next time.
Some of the breakfast entrees come with fruit and bircher muesli. Fruit I've seen include sliced strawberries, purple grapes, orange cantaloupe, honeydew, and pineapple. Bircher muesli is similar to granola. At Sugar Cakes, it's served in a small disposable ramekin and consists of rolled oats in milk. Healthy.
Service I've experienced has been so-so.
Parking at Marietta Square is free. If there are no spots on the Square, I like to park at the free surface lot at the corner of N Marietta Pkwy and Mill St. Another great place to park is the deck on Cherokee St NE near N Park Square. It's free after 4:30pm on weekdays and all-day on weekends.
