"Town Spirit Thanks to loosened liquor laws, Utah’s distilling scene is flourishing—the Sugar House Distillery is the third small-batch distillery to open in the state in the last year. On an informal tour you can buy bottles of owner James Fowler’s vodka and malt whiskey."

We had such a great experience at this local distillery — and a huge part of that was thanks to Wyatt! He guided us through a tasting with so much knowledge, passion, and just the right amount of humor. You could tell he really knows and loves what he’s doing. Wyatt made the whole experience both informative and fun. Highly recommend stopping by!

We had the pleasure of visiting Sugar House Distillery while on vacation. It has an industrial store-front first impression, but as soon as you walk through the front door and see the attractive lobby area and working warehouse in view, you feel the energy of the place. Steve welcomed us into the warehouse. With copper kettles in the background, he gave us an education (with passion and enthusiasm) on the process and art of creating their brand. We appreciated the historical information as well as comparison to other processes in other parts of the world. We enjoyed many samples of various products Sugar House makes. It is obvious they really care about what they do. Our son left with a bottle of the most delicious vodka. We were completely impressed and are the newest fans of the Sugar House Distillery and their product line. I will never drink whiskey again without thinking of all the care that goes into creating it. So much fun!!

Google
Amazing service! They are welcoming and happy to make recommendations and share their knowledge with their products and process. They went the extra mile to make sure that the two bottles I bought as a graduation gift, were packed well. BTW - my son LOVED the gift and looks forward to cracking them open.

Google
What an absolute nice little gem this was! The owner James and his crew, Steve, and the Ryan twins were so welcoming. The tastings are only $10/each and everything so tasty. I highly recommended it!

Google
We really enjoyed the tasting experience. Wyatt was fantastic, and so was the whiskey and vodka!

Swung by to grab a bottle of whiskey for a wedding. Super tasty and extremely friendly. Will definitely be swinging by again anytime I’m in town

Google
What can I say..James is a rockstar in the local Utah distillery scene. I love the product, I love the shop, and you couldn't meet a more down to earth staff. The tastings are supurbe .... 5 stars are not enough

Google
This is a hand crafted product that you can tell the quality and care that goes into each bottel. I highly recomemd the single malt whisky that could hold its own to some scottch. If your a vodka drinker this is smooth with notes of Vanilla.

Yelp
Rad rad rad rad. Best vodka I've had in Salt Lake City yet! 81 proof! I love it here and their emphasis on good distillation is just the start. :)

Yelp
An enjoyable, entertaining and educational visit with James Fowler, the friendly Owner and Operator of Sugar House Distillery in Salt Lake City, Utah. Scheduled a photo shoot with a couple friends of James. While we worked, James helped us sample some very smooth and delicious Single Malt Whiskeys that knocked my socks off. As a novice whiskey drinker, (at best) James Fowler's expertise helped me understand, at least in a small part, the how, what, why and where the whiskey is made and comes of age; the process of the distillery and his craft. I recommend highly a visit to tour his facility or at least to pick up a couple bottles of Sugar House Distillery's world renowned adult beverages and swag. Buy local. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Cool little shop with lots to offer. The Bourbon Whiskey and Experimental 2 are fantastic!

Yelp
One of the highlights of our Park City trip was a stop here. We end up stocking up here it was so good. This place is fabulous! They were grinding blue corn for a specialy drink when we were there. They do it all, no outside sourcing and it tells. They do say they distill unfiltered, which gives everything a deeper flavor. All of their grains are local sourced, molasses from rum is from Louisiana, which is where it should be from. I'm not a vodka guy, but I would drink this neat! They had a great rum! I'd call it elegant.... I'm mostly a bourbon guy, theirs is pretty good. I'm not a huge rye guy, but they have two awsome options! They have a great rye, made the best manhattens I've ever had! They have a really special barrel strength rye, around 116 proof, that is incredible.... Lastly, they had a really great. American single malt, is definitely worth the trip. Friendly and great. Oh yeah, $5 for an entire flight testing. WELL worth it!

Yelp
Outstanding service. Outstanding Whiskey. Take the time and make a visit. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I recently tried Sugar House whisky and was excited to learn that their distillery offered tours in addition to tastings. The owners are clearly very passionate about their product and excited to share the distillation process with the public. I've been on a few distillery tours, but this was by far the most well fun, well planned, detailed, comprehensive, and informative distillery tour I've ever been on. The owner was extremely welcoming and very enthusiastic about crafting quality spirits. This made for a very detailed, fun, and informative tour. Learning about this process from someone who genuinely cares what he does was awesome and the staff was really appreciative of everyone who visited! On top of a great tour, you get a custom sampling of their spirits and it was so cool to try each and understand the differences after understanding how each spirit gets made. All of their products are really wonderful, but my favorite was a gorgeous single malt whisky that I was able to buy in their gift shop which also has Sugar House Distillery merch, spirits, and other products that have been aged in their barrels. This was such a fun tour and I couldn't recommend this more!

Yelp
I did a tasting and it was good. Maybe they can improve on their facilities and add a nice tasting room.

Yelp
We like to try the local booze when we travel and breweries and distilleries are usually a good way to do so. You can schedule tours online, so I booked on for us on a Saturday. The distillery is in a mostly industrial area, but not hard to reach. We were the only two on our tour, which I enjoyed. We were familiar with the distilling process generally, but James was really informative, telling and showing us a few things we didn't know. At the end of our tour, we did a tasting. While most aged liquors aren't my thing, they make a good product. We were also excited to hear that they expect to be on Big Fish Spirits, which would allow us to get bottles back home in Illinois. If you're looking to get to know the local craft liquor scene in SLC, this is a great place to start. James and his wife were also kind enough to recommend a few places to grab a bite after we finished up.

Yelp
I didn't realize the Rye had been out and available for a month now. I just saw that. I was in SLC for other reasons, and I added that I needed some Rye. On my first trip, I had purchased the white and gold Rum. I was able to have a great visit this time with Eric. Given he's the guy over the distilling, that was a treat. We talked a fair amount about the Gin they're going to do. I'm looking forward to that. After getting the Rum, I tasted it against a half dozen similar ones out of the 20 of so I have at the house. It was right up there at the top for the style. I'm about to taste the Rye again the other 8 I have and I expect the same. I think these guys are already at the top of the game for small distillers. The new Still that just came should really give them a leg up going forward. The first time here, I took the tour and they were really great. This time in just solidified things.

Yelp
Really cute little distillery! The ARE open, during this time, but only allowing a few people in, at a time. They're not offering tastings or tours, at the moment, but still offering all of their items ~ vodka, bourbon, whiskey, rum, bitters, masks and hand sanitizer! Much much better than waiting at a liquor store and you get great service!

Yelp
"Worst bourbon I've ever tasted." My husband loves good bourbon and he was excited to try this. However, he reports it tastes like "astringent disgustingness." Buy yourself a bottle of Debonair or Yellowstone instead..

Yelp
Highly recommended distillery! The tour was very in-depth and informative. Whiskey and other drinks were amazing - highly recommended

Yelp
This place is legit and these guys are no joke. Excellent quality spirits and very knowledgeable, fun, friendly staff. I recommend stopping in and taking the tour, it's worth a visit!

Yelp
Customer service beyond my expectation! I had a wonderful experience at Sugar House distillery the other day. I had received a bottle of Vodka from Sugar House Distillery as a birthday present from a friend. I am more of a Whiskey guy, so I reached out to the distillery to see if they would let me exchange the Vodka for some Whiskey. James not only worked out the exchange for me but took time out of his busy day to answer my many questions about whiskey distilling and aging. The man knows his stuff, that's for sure. Genuine customer service is a nearly extinct art form, but James delivered.

Yelp
Awesome craft distillery in a small warehouse. Booked a tour on their website cost $10 per person. Owners are passionate about their products and the head distiller came from High West. They make a Malt Whiskey that is fully flavored with a spice kick to it. While pricey at $45 per bottle it can be worth it to the whiskey connoisseur. They currently distill Vodka, Rum, Whiskey and my only recommendation is to make the tour more interactive and less technical. Keep on distilling sugar house.
google avatar

Yelp
I learned so much about distilling here. More than anything that most places don't actually distill their own liquors... they pretend to and use fancy language but in reality, most places are just packaging plants. NOT SUGAR HOUSE!! I saw it with my own eyes as people were working with the distilling tanks and creating some of the best Utah has to offer. The best part it isn't incredibly expensive. It is small but what it lacks in "size" it makes up for in substance. Smooth delicious and potent. When people really care about their craft it makes you appreciate that thing more. THE VERDICT: Though small this place is fantastic and the staff the works there is knowledgeable and taught me so much about the little I know about distilling. Go and visit and have a fun time being instructed. Learning. Literally the main reason for the rating.

Yelp
I went in to Sugar House Distillery to buy local bitters. I am from out of town and didn't realize that things had progressed and I could get them at Harmon's. Anyhow, the trip to Sugar House Distillery was awesome. I was looking to get my husband a nice bottle of Bourbon, but since I don't love the stuff myself I had no idea what to buy. Luckily Eric took his time with me and explained the different types of Bourbons and Whiskies that they offered. He also explained the bitters too. I truly appreciated that he was not pretentious when I told him I am more of a wine girl and didn't have a clue. He made the entire experience comfortable, and I learned a lot. I ended up buying bitters, Bourbon and Vodka. The shop is small, but has a good variety of items from small batch alcohol to bitters to drink accessories. The bourbon was delicious (according to my husband). The old fashions he made with the bourbon and bitters were delicious. As and FYI, they have tours of the facility. They also have $2 single tastings. Check this place out!

Yelp
Excellent service! We had a bachelor party of 6 do a tasting and we had an amazing time. The gentleman who led our tasting knew so much about his craft! It was wonderful to learn so much! We sampled vodka, rum, bourbon, rye, and single malt. It was amazing.

Yelp
Went in for a quick sample and buy some liquor before heading on a trip. Good service, incredible bourbon. It's pricey, but small distilleries are never cheap.

Yelp
A friend and I went and tour this location today. We had Jasmine as our guide. She gave us a breakdown of all the products they have and where they get their ingredients. She was very knowledgeable of the process and did a wonderful job of explaining how it all works. The taste testing was great. I'm a Jack Daniels guy personally, but I found myself liking everything they offered.
google avatar

Loresa B.

Yelp
This was such a pleasant surprise to run into to. They were on our list of new adventures and we arrived just prior to closing. Their was a your just starting and we were invited in! It was amazing to here the story of whisky making and our host was very knowledgeable and passionate. So much fun and he took us all around and at the end we got to taste all the different product they make. And it isn't just whisky. Rum and vodka was in the mix too. We couldn't leave without 2 bottles of our favorite. The quality is over the top and that is what will carry them into one of the most popular distilleries.

Yelp
Be really great if they were actually open when their sign on the door says they are. Came on a Friday with 4 of us wanting to try some of their products. Came at 11:30am. Sign on door says open Monday - Saturday 11am-6pm. Lies.

Yelp
We had a group of three for a little birthday pre-party and had a blast! James Fowler was our host and tour guide. He is incredibly knowledgeable and you can tell he takes great pride in his business and product. We asked a million questions and he was very patient and answered them all. The tasting at the end was really nice and I look forward to buying their rum for mojitos this next summer. Thanks, James and crew!!!

Yelp
Ahh, loved everything about the place. And not just because I am partial to good whiskey (and gin, and vodka, and beer, and wine...uhm got a little carried away there) but also how detailed and well-done the tour was. Greatly enjoyed the tasting, too. Whiskeys ranked in order of taste and overall effect- 1 being the best (unlike the Yelp rating system): 1. Single Malt; 2. Boilermaker;3. Rye; 4. Bourbon. Keep up the good work!

Yelp
They are awesome. Great guys. Great tasting service and feature of the tour. They seem to love what they do and know a lot about how they are making their products and I say they definitely are high quality in flavor and taste. Try all of their products.

Yelp
I recently visited Sugar House Distillery as part of a Meetup tour and tasting. They are a fairly new distillery in UT but they certainly put out a top shelf product. I enjoyed tasting their vodka, rum, and whiskey spirits. However, the whiskey was my favorite as it had this bold smoky flavor, but still very smooth. The staff is super friendly and will teach you everything about their distilling process as the odd liquor laws in the state. You can pick their spirits up in UT liquor stores as well.

Yelp
Very nice people. The tour was very educational. A little hard to find but great overall

Yelp
I have had a few bottles of Sugar House distillery's spirits. I even used their whiskey in a bourbon barrel porter I made. But I had never visited the distillery. My wife and I were up in the Salt Lake Valley and starting to head home when we decided to take a detour and visit. I'm so glad we did! we were fortunate in that we walked in just as the tour was starting. The guy giving the tour was great! It is clear that these guys are super passionate about their product and take great pride in making a superior product. I have been on tours like this before, but this one was WAY more in depth about the process of distilling. It was really fascinating to see how these guys do everything in house even to the smallest detail of culturing their own yeasts. No detail is too small for them to make sure that they are making a great product. We finished the tour by having a sampling of their vodka, whisky and rums I had to make sure to bring home a couple bottles from their bottle shop. Yea, the booze is a bit on the pricey side, but it's very much worth it. It is well worth stopping by and taking the tour and tasting the spirits.
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Hands down, the single best distillery tour I've ever been on. The amount of love, knowledge, and passion that these guys put into their craft is amazing. Dont expect a tour read from a script. This was the most personal and informative tour I've ever been on (breweries included). And the spirits are amazing. Please do not pass this up. My on knock on the place is that I'll never be able to get a bottle of this in Jersey.. If you are in SLC, visit and drink up!
google avatar

Yelp
Decided to stop in last minute. They didn't have a tour available, but offered to give us a private tour anyway! Everyone was super nice and I had a lot of fun seeing the process up close! The tasting was awesome. Totally worth it!

Yelp
Good spirits! Check them out! I loved being able to walk into their distillery and buy liquor there! Thats right, IN UTAH!!! I think my favorite is their gold rum!

Yelp
Friendly knowledgeable staff. Delicious spirits. Nothing not to love here. The tasting was really fun and informative. An incredible value at $5.

Yelp
We went on a distillery tour with some friends and it was phenomenal. This distillery sits in South Salt Lake adjacent to the Sugarhouse neighborhood and I am disappointed with myself that, before yesterday, I had not enjoyed the delightful spirits this crew of dedicated craftspeople are making. The tour was lead by Jasmin, an intelligent, passionate, and personable guide. She taught us so much about the process of distilling and delivered the information in an accessible way. The tour was long enough that we could get into the details of the distillery's day to day, but not so long that the information became drab or repetitive. Then we got to the tasting. This place is doing some really interesting stuff and I love it! I don't want to influence your taste buds too much, but I would highly recommend the golden rum, rye, and single malt. I am not a huge vodka fan, but I enjoyed the smoothness of their spirt. The silver rum will surprise you in a delightful way. We ended up taking a bottle home of the bourbon, so that tells you which one was our favorite. It was sweet and smoky like most bourbons are, but it has a special spice at the end that I am all about and have been looking for in my whiskey for my entire drinking life. This is definitely going to be my go to spot when I want to treat myself or get a gift for my family and friends.

Jenny B.

Yelp
Popped in for a tasting and had a great experience. The single malt whiskey was my favorite and the owner was nice enough to take us for a short tour after our tasting. I highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Deb J.

Yelp
Awesome experience. Jake gave us s personal tour and we tasted the vodka, rums, and whisky. I recommend stopping by and taking a tour.

Nicole A.

Yelp
Today we went and checked out Sugar House Distillery and we weren't that impressed. The tour guide, James really bashed their competitor, High West Whiskey which makes them seem unprofessional and is just in poor taste. Speaking of the taste, it was mediocre at best. The Gold Rum and the Malt Whiskey were the best but still not up to my standards. The tour guide also seemed to be a bit, all over the place with the description of how they made their products. I would have liked the tour to be a bit more organized and educational. Not everyone goes to a tasting to just drink. Some of us are actually interested in learning something. We did get four neat souvenir glasses, not bad for $22 but I certainly wouldn't go again. I would head up to High West in Blue Sky and enjoy a great glass of whiskey.
