On the Grid : Bar Liquorice

"From the moment you settle in at the bar or the lounge in the back, the owner, Jeff, and his crew make you feel like you're hanging out with them in their living room. With a creative cocktail list crafted by a master bartender (Shaun, who also makes his own mixers and juices) and taps that rotate weekly and feature local brews, there's something here for everyone. Enjoy complimentary rosemary olive oil popcorn and a variety of liquorice while you wait for your sandwich (try the Bang Mi—the espresso-infused BBQ pulled pork is fantastic) or one of the not-so-small plates. Don't miss Monday movie nights, and if you time it right, the owner may even treat you to free soft-serve from a local ice cream truck." - Planit

So last night, I stopped into this cocktail bar called Sugarvale on Madison Street. The place is small but cute — cozy, stylish, the kind of spot that makes you feel like you’re cooler than you really are just by being there. The prices? Way more reasonable than I expected. The cocktails? Chef’s kiss — flavorful, balanced, and definitely crafted by someone who knows their bitters from their simple syrup. But then… there was Heather. Now, I’m not saying Heather was actually chewing on Sour Patch Kids, but based on the sourness of her attitude, I wouldn’t be surprised if she had a whole economy-sized bag stashed behind the bar. She served sass with a twist of lemon — and not the good kind that comes in your drink. To the owner: might I suggest supplying Heather with a candy that better reflects the sweet vibe of your establishment? Perhaps a few See’s Candies Milk Chocolate Truffles — rich, smooth, and incapable of side-eyeing a paying customer. Or even a good old Snickers — because clearly, she’s not herself when she’s hungry. Despite the sour service, I’d still go back. Sugarvale’s drinks make up for a lot… but next time, I hope Heather’s rocking more sugar and less spice.

I came for a night out by myself yesterday. The place is a little small but quite cozy! They’ve got an array of great cocktails and everything is very reasonably priced. I’ll definitely be back.

The place is smaller than what I thought. Their happy hour menu drinks are really good. The food is really good. The vegan burger is dry but it tastes good. The pie is really good definitely try it. It's a good place to chill with friends.

I love finding cool cocktail bars I've never encountered before. Sugarvale is a basement bar right near Baltimore's Washington Monument in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood. The cocktails weren't good they were excellent 👌! Great vibe and super cool bartenders. Strongly recommend!

If you're looking for a cool, vampire-y basement bar with great drinks, check out Sugarvale. The interior is dim and a little loud, but feels very intimate and moody for a date or meeting up with a small group of friends. Since 2020 they expanded their outdoor seating! During the day, it makes a nice spot for a drink and to read or write before the dinner crowd streams through. The drink menu is always fun, and their food is a nice bite to munch along with your drink. The menu always has something for the more adventurous AND the more traditional, but their bartenders can accommodate you preferences if you ask nicely!

This is my favorite bar in all of Baltimore. We went once for date night and now I go once every week. Everything is delicious but I always get the pork buns and the Astroid Blues (see you in space cowboy). I love everything about this place. Please give it a try if you get a chance, you won't regret it.

Had gone here with friends, it's a small, kind of hole in the wall place, but it's cozy with warm, dark, and slightly moody ambience. It's a tight space with how popular it is. There's table, bar, and outdoor seating. Sat at the bar and that was nice, it was easier to get your order in. Seats are comfortable for bar stools. People who can't get a seat at the bar can just stand by it. There's a bathroom inside, but I didn't personally use it. In terms of drinks: alien love call, ginger beer (non-alcoholic), and sansho the bailiff. I recommend all three, but if I had to choose just one to drink again, it would definitely be the alien love call. Maybe it's because I'm biased towards floral flavors. It was quite light and couldn't quite taste the alcohol. I could probably drink 50 of those. Sansho the bailiff - heavy on the rum, but fun flavor combo. If you've never had ginger beer, it's like spicy ginger ale. In terms of food, we got these wings and they were hella good - super crispy and I think they had honey drizzled on them. The blue cheese dip was super creamy and not as bitter as I thought it would be. It paired well with the wings. I forgot to take a picture of the beet burger I had, but I was pleasantly surprised by it's quality. I'd order it again + didn't really taste the beet in it, but that's my preference anyways.

Google
Excellent drinks, decent food, can get a little crowded at night or on weekends. If it’s slow they’ll come to your table, but generally you gotta order at the bar. Almost-may update, new seasonal drinks are fantastic (and still anime themed)

Yelp
I really enjoyed dropping by Sugarvale recently! The ambiance is very intimate, with the door feeling slightly hidden going down to the basement level, and dim lighting plus candles lit at every table. I went in on a Sunday so there was all-day happy hour, so the drinks were very affordable! However, the food options are very limited on Sundays--I was excited to get the Spicy-G Mac and Cheese (the same one from Dooby's I think) and the KFC Buns, but will have to come and get it another day. There usually is Guacamole and Yucca Chips on Sundays, but unfortunately they said they were out of food for the weekend when we asked about them. There was seating both at the bar and at a few tables on the sides, but it probably would get filled up quickly with much of a crowd. The service was quick and great; we were given water as soon as we sat down and also handed menus. I'm not really great at ordering cocktails, so I asked the bartender for his recommendations for a drink that is sweet and fruity, and he suggested the Amaro Daiquiri. I thought it was delicious and hit the sweet and fruity notes while still being pretty strong. My friend got the Mezcal Paloma and she liked it as well. Something cool to note is that all the shaken drinks can be made into mocktails upon request too. It seems like a great place for a small catch-up with friends or for a date night after dinner. I definitely will be back for happy hour, but probably wouldn't come on Sunday just because I want to have a chance to try out the food menu!

Yelp
I've been to this venue multiple times over the years and they never disappoint. This basement restaurant has a very cool urban atmosphere and you don't feel like you are below ground. Since I'm not much of a cocktail drinker, I can't comment on the drinks from here other than to say my friends appear to enjoy their cocktails very much. There's also a ton of seating outside, and I love taking advantage of those seats when the weather is nice. My past recent visit, I got a slice of the Damn Good Pie...not sure what I was on that day, but that pie is named properly. The buttermilk tart gives a cheesecake vibe and texture and the crust was a nice finish. Definitely an enjoyable visit!

Yelp
Sugarvale has some fun cocktails and drink options. They have both indoor at outdoor seating. The drinks were great, everybody enjoyed the cocktail that they ordered. I will say it took a little bit time to have the drinks prepared as there was only one person at the bar. They have some small bite available as well. I would not order the Mac and cheese as it barely had any cheese sauce. The kfc buns however were delicious. The pie was also a nice sweet treat.

Yelp
What a vibe this Sugarvale spot! On Sunday, they have happy hour all day so we popped in after dinner for a drink. The bartender, Britt, was sooo friendly and the vibes were great. It seems like a neighborhood spot that locals love as seemingly everyone who walked in greeted my colleague who showed me around town that day. I wish I was hungry so I could have tried the food, as the menu has things like tostones, a burger, and spicy mac and cheese - yum! The cocktail menu is filled with good options. This definitely seems like a spot to pop into often if you're in the area. Good vibes, good drinks, and friendly service.

Yelp
The atmosphere was cool, the drink was great the bartender, not so much. We were hot and tired so, we were thankful to have a cool spot to chill. Too bad we didn't feel welcomed.

Yelp
We walked down after leaving another packed bar not too far away. Super intimate bar with unique cocktails. The Kapaa's Cup I order was spirit forward, but a bit salty for my taste. I ordered the Hurricane something (the featured cocktails change) was delish. It was a guava tiki style cocktail that drank really easy.

The Lady E.

Yelp
Great, BUT ... The atmosphere was great as were the food and drinks. Concerned and disappointed about 2 things though. Concerned about hygiene - allowing a woman with long hair to vigorously brush her hair (and I don't mean a few strokes with the brush for a minute or two either) at the bar where there is exposed food, drinks and condiments. Who knows where her hair and skin flakes wound up. Made me a little queasy. This coupled the the facts that the restaurant is in a basement in a city that is "ranked by 7th in Orkin's list of the 50 rattiest cities in America" almost made me stop eating their very delicious Permil port bun and, unfortunately, started me wondering about other sanitary practices. Did her hair provide materials for rats' nests? Disappointed that they do not put any cherries (let alone Luxardo cherries) in their Old Fashions, at least not for happy hour; aren't Luxardo cherries a must?

Yelp
If you're a Yelper than you probably have a list of saved places to try. Well Sugarvale has been on my list so one day a friend and I popped in as they were opening. We got parking right in front which could be an issue on a busy night...FYI. We grabbed seats at the bar, chatted with the bartenders and were off! Off to real boozeland after having a couple cocktails. Not a complaints by an means, just know what you're getting yourself into. Those crafted cocktails pack a great punch in this cute little speakeasy-esque spot. The sole restroom did cause a line after a few but otherwise a cool place with interesting people talking about eclectic things. I'll be back soon!

Yelp
tostones plantains 4/5 Tiramisu 3.5/5 while I personally did not like my drink (negroni) this was more of a personal preference than anything else. the bartender was super nice and the place itself has nice ambiance and is cutely tucked away in Mt. Vernon. I'd recommend for a cute date night or hang out!

Yelp
Sugarvale is one of those places that you know is going to be a good time and the perfect place to set the tone for the night. I always know I am going to get a good cocktail with good service and be met with good company. The interior is cozy and warm and the staff is so attentive and creative with the drinks they create. Normally I'll do a menu drink then go to one of my typical bar drinks but here I always want to try everything they create. I always know its going to be a good night when we start here. On the other hand their bar food comes over from doobys so you know its going to be good. Last time I came I got wings and I wanted to stay longer just to order more! so come for the drinks, stay for the vibes and get food!

Yelp
This was such a cute find! It's nice and intimidate with some outdoor dining as well. The food options were unique. I got the beet burger and it was so flavorful. Everything was good including dessert and my mocktail. The staff was kind enough to answer my many questions before ordering.

Yelp
First stop on our pub tour. Got the really fun guy and alien love call cocktails. They made the drinks fast and yummy. The really fun guy is a great combination for the more bitter flavors and the alien love call was yummy with a bit more sour. Not margarita sour, it's great.

Yelp
Went on a whim to try this place out and I'm glad I did. I came alone however I had good small talk with the bartender. Their menu changes based on the seasons which I enjoy. I tried the Kuromi Koffee which is their flair of an espresso martini. The flavors were amazing as It reminded me of a salted caramel drink. I'll definitely be back
google avatar

Yelp
This was the first stop on a spooky pub tour. Imagine my surprise walking into this swanky establishment expecting a pub. The drinks are very unique and yummy. Our group had four different beverages and enjoyed all of them. The drinks do have an elegant touch, so this would be a great place for a date night. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The cutest basement cocktail bar in Mount Vernon. This is a Phil Han cocktail bar (same owner as Dooby's). This area reminds me of NYC and it's an escape from the city. It's quiet and quaint with the loveliest cocktails. They do have HH regularly, they usually don't have food Sunday afternoons. It's a must for anyone that wants a HH, date or night cap. For outside seating you have to go inside to get served, which can be annoying. But other than that this intimate cocktail bar is among the top in the city.
google avatar

Nakisha C.

Yelp
One of my favorite cocktail bars! The drinks are complex and thoughtfuland the service was great. Also love that is pretty low key. Geared towards cocktails and not just ambience so not so much of the younger social media crowd.... keeps it an intimate setting.

Yelp
I was visiting Baltimore for the weekend and this place was listed as one of the highlighted restaurant. Fist, it is a bar , with some food options , no a restaurant. The place is very nice, and the out side setting is very enjoyably. You need to know there are not table service , so if u are seating outside, you need to go to the bar to order. Maybe if u are by yourself , when u comeback after you order is someone else seated on ur table . My first cocktail was good , but the chicken bun was too spice , I gave it up . When I went inside for my second drink and food , they told me the kitchen closed at 9. It is ok but Why do not tell your patrons kitchen is closing soon? I just left.

Yelp
Really nice date night place! My partner and I were visiting and came across Sugarvale. It was right after happy hour so things were super busy but we were able to get a seat at the bar after a short wait. The drinks are really great, both my partner and I enjoyed the flavors and creativity of all the drinks we ordered. For drinks we tried the Highwayman, Mystery Man, Ms. Secret, and a couple of beers (I can't remember the name of them). All were really enjoyable. We also got the sweet potato chips, SV burger, side of broccoli, and KFC buns. They were all good but for us definitely the highlight is the drinks.

Yelp
I've passed by this place a lot. I stopped in around 9:00pm on a Wednesday night. It's a small, yet well laid out bar. There is seating at the bar and small tables as well. We opted for a cozy table. My friend ordered a beer and a cider. The cider was light and crisp. The prices were low - less than $7 per item for what we selected. The cocktail menu was interesting and I would like to try some in the future. The food selection is limited but that is typical for a quaint bar. I only saw one bartender. He was attentive and friendly to each patron.

Yelp
*This review is Pre-COVID. I haven't been here during COVID. Where do I even began? My friend asked me to join her and her friends one time back in December. I reluctantly agreed. I drove around 5 times before I could find the entrance. It's tucked away in between houses with stairs walking down to the entrance. Considering it was December, the inside decor was so festive and beautiful! I couldn't believe my eyes! I came back here again after walking around Miracle of 34th street. Beautiful vibes and drinks. I truly enjoy their seasonal collection and decor. It makes coming back here enjoyable and pleasurable. This is the perfect spot for date night or an intimate setting. I wouldn't consider coming here with a bunch of friends as inside it can get pretty packed.

Yelp
If you're looking for a very lowkey bar in the vibrant baltimore city i'd go here. The drink selections are unique and different. This tiki drink I got was soooo good and I'd go back again for the dim lit vibe, good music and lowkey spot. the service was also quick and attentive.

Yelp
I went on a whim night! it is a hidden jewel and extremely small. We we're able to find a table in the back for two, we ordered wings and their burger. The drinks were wonderful and the food was great. although, there was only two people serving bartender and host; our food came out very quickly. Will definitely be returning!
google avatar

Heather W.

Yelp
My friends and I went last night! Some of the other people at the bar left alot to be desired but the bartenders were great and made great drinks! Food stops at 10pm. It can get tight there if big parties show up
google avatar

April S.

Yelp
I love the vibe of sugarvale. Very intimate location with a quiet, East atmosphere. Options for cocktails are very classic/old schools selections with unique I ingredients. This is not your sex on the beach type of establishment. If you need a tequila sunrise or a Fuzzy navel, this might not be the place for you. The last time I went there was a customer who must've had the toughest day in their life. F bombs everywhere. Must have been an employee or close friend of the bartenders, but he ruined the experience for us for sure. No major food served on Sunday (they want to be Chic fil A so bad). Overall good. Would to again. Love then decor.
google avatar

Rachael W.

Yelp
Perfect for a date night or drinks out with friends. Didn't try the food but drinks were bomb, the menu is fun and the staff is great
google avatar

Bobbie P.

Yelp
The best of Mt. Vernon (IMO) rests in this small, quant speakeasy. The drinks here are outstanding, which is the main reason why people come to speakeasy's in the first place. The bartenders are friendly but they're about their job, not to chat you up about how it's 102F outside. They're here to make delicious and creative drinks and they do it very well. The kitchen is understated because of the limited number of items on the menu, but don't pass up the opportunity to try whatever is showcased on the day that you go. We tried a little bit of everything and didn't find a dish that wasn't fantastic, the mac and cheese though...that stood out. The seating is limited as the space itself is small, so come early or expect to wait a bit for people to leave and free up space.
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
Sugarvale is one of the tastiest spots for cocktails in Baltimore! First, the staff is incredibly friendly and Covid conscious. The outdoor tables allow for plenty of room to spread out and provide a lesser-known view of the beautiful Mt. Vernon neighborhood. Not only is the staff and atmosphere sublime, but the drinks are incredibly creative! I ordered the Tropico which came with pineapple leaf garnish - something I've never seen before! The drinks paired unique, natural flavors with topnotch spirits all while avoiding being too overpowered by sweetness or booziness (aka the perfect balance). Whether you plan to go out for outdoor drinks or pay a visit once it is safe enough to hang out inside, definitely add Sugarvale to your list of Baltimore bars worth checking out!
google avatar

Adam K.

Yelp
I will definitely come back. Charming atmosphere, friendly staff, great cocktails and solid food make this a great place for a drink with friends or a nice date. Food - solid. It was at worst still good and at best phenomenal. The sweet and spicy nuts weren't really spicy, but they still had a nice sweet-salty vibe. The Spicy-G Mac & Cheese was also not that spicy, but it was very tasty and quite satisfying. The buns that caught our eye were the Pulled Lamb buns and the Oyster Mushroom Buns. My wife really enjoyed the lamb and I dare say the oyster mushroom buns were so well prepared that they tasted even better than the meat (my wife doesn't usually like mushrooms, but she enjoyed these!). My wife loved the Burger #2, which was a stepped up version of their usual burger. I went for the Bean & Beet burger, which was fine, but I've had much better bean burgers than this one. Damn Good Pie - lives up to its name. Get it. Basically a crème brûlée pie with a great crust and a solid tang from the buttermilk. You will not be disappointed. You're welcome. Drinks are great. We got two classics for happy hour - Old Fashioned and Manhattan, which were well done. I loved that the bartender was able to suggest from the somewhat daunting list of fancy cocktails something that would suit our taste, based on what we'd had. Even after enjoying two on the menu, he made us something off menu which had bourbon in it and it was delightful! Prices can add up fast, but this place is great. Definitely recommended.
google avatar

Lashanda L.

Yelp
Upon arrival, we scanned the menu , ordered our first round of drinks, and started a tab from our mobile phone. It was easy and a beautiful hot and breezy day in Mt. Vernon. So, we're already talking about going back to have a few more of these creative concoctions. We sat outdoors and enjoyed watching people and dogs walk by. The tables and seats are in the street protected by a water barrier. The drinks made us feel more comfortable as cars whizzed by.

Lindsay D.

Yelp
The cocktails here are really interesting and intricate, it's a fun place to go to try something new! Intimate atmosphere.

Yelp
the best drinks, food and vibe. Such a great gem in the city. Britt is the best bartender!

Yelp
I have been to Sugarvale twice and had two completely different experiences both times. The first time I went was over the summer. It was a Friday evening around 7:30pm and it was extremely packed. The space is small but cozy. It was self seating which was fine and you order at the bar which was also fine. The issue was the vibe! It was just nonexistent. If yal have read my other reviews you know I enjoy vibes lol. The music was just okay, food was not that great and service wasn't even a thing! Fast forward to two weeks ago and what a change! This time I went on a Saturday around 11:00pm ish. Still packed but the vibe / energy was very different! The music was amazing, the staff so friendly and the drinks chefs kiss! I didn't have the food again hence why I didn't give five stars but this was a fun place for a intimate nightcap. I didn't feel rushed as before, the staff handled the high demand/ busy atmosphere very well and it was overall just a good time! I think Sugarvale is a fun place for drinks with friends before or after going out, a sexy / intimate nightcap or just a cool neighborhood staple! Overall I recommend for drinks but will have to try the food again for a better experience.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and amazing drinks at a reasonable price! The venue is small but luckily we snagged a table on a Thursday night. I got a whiskey drink with coffee that was delicious - just the right amount of bitterness. I will definitely be back try try another unique cocktail!

Yelp
Since moving to Baltimore a few months ago and starting a job near Mount Vernon, I've been to Sugarvale a few times now! It's a great little cocktail bar with a small but inventive menu. As of October 2021, they have reopened inside just for the purpose of ordering and paying, and they are open for outdoor seating only. So it's definitely a weather dependent bar right now (they are good about posting on Instagram that they are closing up early or not opening up on a day with rainy/bad weather). I haven't had their food, but all of the cocktails I've tried have been good. It definitely seems like a neighborhood spot (one of my friends who lives in Mount Vernon almost always runs into someone she knows when she visits), but it would also be a great place for someone not from the neighborhood (like me!) to enjoy a drink before or after a dinner at a nearby restaurant. I've been a few times for happy hour, and once for drinks on an evening after dinner. It's a chill spot with some great drinks. Check it out if you haven't been before!

Yelp
Came here 2.5 years ago and fell in love. Had to stop by on our way back from Kentucky. And I usually only review a place after the second time I've gone. Got here on a Monday at 5:30 PM. The bar wasn't crowded, but we took a table anyway. Usually, the bar is the go-to. There was one bartender working and he was killing it. They don't make 'em like that anymore. I don't understand how he tended to everyone, got food orders, etc. I never saw anyone else in there during those 2 and a half hours. Drinks were great, even the Happy Hour ones. Daiquiri, for example, was b-b-b-bangin'!
google avatar

Sandy N.

Yelp
Really ambiance-y place with amazing, classy drinks and good food!! The amaro daiquiri during happy hour was surprisingly good. The chicken buns were great and I am so happy they have a completely vegan burger with a vegan cheese on it (lactose intolerant friendly). Will absolutely be coming back. It is a little echo-y and loud but I'd say it's still a great to hang out with people.
google avatar

Barbi B.

Yelp
I had seen that they don't do reservations so I showed up early with my bf to get a seat at the bar. The ambience is really on point, we loved it. The bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable and we had a great time chatting with them. They even let us try one of their whiskeys because we were chatting about it. I can't name by memory any of the drinks that I had and unfortunately they don't have their new spring cocktails posted online yet (they just updated the cocktail menu a few days ago). I thought I would like the cocktail with mango in it, but the garlic falernum really threw me off. It was interesting but too weird for me. My favorite cocktail was the one that had clarified milk in it, I wish I could tell you what it was called. None of their cocktails were particularly on point for my taste, but I'd still come back because I loved the service, ambience, and creativity in their mixology.
google avatar

Samuel S.

Yelp
This place is teeny but lovely. The bartenders are kind and helpful, drinks are fun, ambience is sexy. The only issue is that there is exactly ONE bathroom for all customers and bartenders, which can lead to an awkward wait.
google avatar

Lily C.

Yelp
This was my first time coming to the bar. It is a very cool, unique, and dope cocktail bar. The staff was friendly and they greeted you when you walked into the bar. There was enough indoor seating and they offered outdoor seating. Come here if you want to try different drinks with a friend!
google avatar

Yelp
I almost don't want to leave a review because I don't want to share one of my favorite bars in Baltimore. BUT.... I really love this place and started this whole Yelp thing and it only seems right that I review Sugarvale. Stopped by there this past weekend on Friday evening @8:30pm. It was super packed, so I left with my group to go grab food and came back @ 10:30p. It was still super packed. All good though. We squeezed into a small area at the bar and even scored a few bar stools. I must say, every time I go to Sugarvale the bartenders are very helpful, regardless of how busy they are. The drink list seems to be different every time I visit this bar but that's kind of the cool part about it all. The bartenders are legit and make it just as fun to watch them make the drinks as it is to sip on the drinks. I would love for there to be a wee bit more focus on the music at the bar. Sometimes it's playing sometimes it's not and sometimes it's great music (a little something for everyone) and other times not so much. Bottom line: this is a great hidden gem in Baltimore. I hope it doesn't go anywhere anytime soon.
google avatar

Annie L.

Yelp
With some of the most creative drinks in town, paired with a subterranean abode that is both welcoming and upscale, Sugarvale is a Mt. Vernon standout! Descending the stairs and entering into this cozy, dimly lit bar, you feel as if you've walked into a secret club of sorts. Rest assured, the welcoming and knowledgable bartenders are ready to guide you through your first visit. Serving up an inventive, and consistently updated cocktail list, you're sure to find something intriguing that won't disappoint. Though known for its drinks, the food menu is not to be missed! The black bean and beet burger is a vegetarian highlight on the menu, and a flavorful companion to any of the liquid concoctions on the menu.

Natalie M.

Yelp
Loved this bar! We had a recommendation from a local to come here and I'm glad we did. They offer such an assortment of cool drinks and there's a late night happy hour with drinks costing 7 to 8 bucks. I got an old fashioned and negroni. Both were very well made! I also liked the interior of the place, a neighborhood bar but still had a nice appeal (not grungy). Bar staff were super cool too and seemed like great people.
google avatar

Emily R.

Yelp
Definitely am a fan of their Happy Hour. I also did not try any food so read this review as someone who checked out Sugarvale on a hot Wednesday, early evening for Happy Hour. It was nice and cool in there, it felt so nice. Sat at the sleek, dark, bar with my husband and were greeted immediately. Bartenders were both super nice and clearly had lots of locals that come in because of the drinks and their friendliness. I had a gimlet and a Boot Snake and they both were potent, delicious and beautiful. Husband had a negroni and an amaro daiquiri, and he liked the daiquiri better of the two. I wish there was a HH deal on all of their cocktails. All in all we would definitely be back here before dinner for a cocktail or two or three.

Yelp
This is an intimate dwelling in a Mount Vernon basement. It's the perfect setting if you're trying to actually talk to someone and enjoy the drinks - like on a date. The lights are low with a few bulbs here and there. There's usually some form of greenery or the outdoors on the ceiling. This time it's pine cones but in the past they've had ivy. It's nice that they bring the outdoors inside. They offer a few small bites from Doobys upstairs like their dumplings and max & cheese. But the true reason to visit is for their rotating drink menu. It's broken down to help people decide which type of cocktail they'd like. The drinks are on the pricer side but are actually enjoyable and come with such a presentation that they're hard to ignore. There isn't much seating. A few tables outside when it's warm, maybe 8 bar stools, and a few tables (high top and small tables) so enjoy the cozy setting and prepare your liver.

Yelp
I've been to Sugarvale on a few occasions now and always have a positive experience. Seating is very limited inside--just a heads up. It has a cool, dim, sort of speakeasy vibe though which is always pretty cool. Not overly loud either, which I enjoy so I don't have to hold conversation by yelling over everyone else. The drinks are super yummy, my go-to is the Rickety Cricket (especially because it's on the happy hour menu). I also enjoy the house rose when I want something lighter. The food is very limited, so you may want to take that into consideration. I've had the vegetable dumplings and the seafood dumplings in my visits. I love the seafood dumplings, they are juicy and full of flavor. The last time I found big, hard, pieces of shell in there though which was a bit of a turn off. Overall the experience is nice though and I will continue to come back for happy hours

Yelp
Cocktail was good, they have the dark basement speakeasy look down. Bartenders were friendly. One thing did not like was there kitchen closed at 9 which is early for place that is open till 1. In comparison owl bowl has late night menu till 11. There menu is limited so should not be hard to keep Going. If need to remove burgers or some other dish that is fine. Also if no longer serving food do not include food menu to customer. There menu is 3 pages attached to clipboard so easily can take out the food page. I did not know kitchen closed until after ordered my drink just after 9. Likely to return but slightly annoyed

Yelp
Hmmmm you had me at charcuterie... I was lazily walking home one evening when I saw the light on in the old space that was once occupied be Dylan's Oysters Bar. I'd heard rumblings that Phil of Dooby's had opened another spot. Anxiously I quickened my pace. I was greeted by a cool interior with a minimalist feel. Hello craft cocktails and charcuterieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Glancing over the small but, extensive menu I couldn't decide what I wanted to try first. I finally settled on the deviled eggs with Tasso ham (creamy with the right mustard to mayo ratio). The Beef carpaccio served on toasted bread with pickled onion, pesto and goat cheve. And I washed it all down with a nice chilled Grenache. All that for 16 bucks! How great! :) With it's spacious tables, seating and laid back vibe, I'd definitely visit again.

Yelp
Brought a friend from California to Sugarvale for a drink after a stressful evening. We were just looking for a place to relax and have a cocktail and we were not disappointed! We each got a specialty cocktail and they were each delicious. I ordered their pear cider and it was one of the best alcoholic ciders I've ever tasted. I loved that they didn't try to hide the alcohol, but rather use it as the star of the drink and enhance it. The vibe of sugarvale is very speakeasy-esque, with the fact that it is in one of the basements of Mount Vernon and the brick walls really bring out that mysterious feel. We felt like it was perfect for us to just relax, chat, and enjoy the night. The bartenders are nice, they seem to know their regulars really well. I can't say they were incredibly eager to serve my friend and I, they seemed more interested in chatting with their friends. That was really the only issue I had, so I'll probably give it another try and maybe try some food!

Yelp
Found this place as I was walking around Mt. Vernon. There was quite a few people in line waiting for to-go cocktails, but the line move super fast and the wait wasn't long at all. Over all it was a really good cocktail, a bit on the small side for the price, but really enjoyed the flavor.
