Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve

Beautiful Reserve! The drive was nice but to do the full 67 Kms turn left at the stop sign first. A simple sign or arrow would help! The only nice toilets are at the main picnic site before the long drive and they looked fairly recently renovated. The advertised picnic area halfway through the drive is not open so also, no toilets there either. Birding was nice as well.

The reserve was well worth a visit and an easy distance from home. We had a good experience. The staff at the gate were friendly and welcoming. Ensure you receive the information booklet on entry. We did the Cheetah 🐆 4.5km hike. For novices a good distance. We also elected to do the walk early to avoid the heat and late afternoon storms. The only criticism was lack of consistent signage on how to get to the start of the trail. The views were amazing and with all the rain so much green as far as the eye could see. Sadly the museum was closed, hopefully it will be reopened at some point. The ablutions appear to have been recently renovated, and clean. No visible litter which was so pleasing. If you plan on including a picnic, remember you need to include drinking water amongst your supplies and what you bring in you need to take out. We elected not to do the tourist drive this time. For noting its 66 km one directional and can take up to 3 hours at the 50 km speed limit. So planning your day is recommend.

Rest rooms are clean equipped with tissues and soap. Cheetah trail is beautiful just needs maintaining. It has overgrown shrubs better wear long pants to avoid bites. Braise yourself for a bit of up and down hill🤣🤣

Certainly worth adding to anybody bucket list for hiking trails to be explored. The hiking trails are easy to follow and rather challenging from a fitness perspective but the breath taking veiws provided the perfect offset. Enough secured parking and the amenities are well looked after and clean.

Big skies, long loops, and the feeling you’ve actually left the city. We did one of the shorter circular hikes and still got broad grassland views, antelope sightings, and that quiet you only get when the road noise drops away. Trails are well marked and the gradients are honest but manageable. Take plenty of water, a hat, and decent shoes—there’s limited shade on the ridges. Facilities at the gates are basic but fine. If you like the idea of a “proper” hike without a long drive, this is an easy yes.

Nature is gorgeous 😍, maintenance needs to be done to infrastructure. Safe ride, tar roads all the way. Don't need a 4x4. We went birding 🦉

A great hiking/biking trail with some of the best views. It is a well maintained nature reserve that offers unforgettable memories. The trails are properly marked and the place is very clean. They open very early, weekday visiting hours are 7:00 to 16:00 and 18:00 on weekends. 3 trails 1. Bokmakierie trail which has 3 options 10km and 11,5km & 2. Cheater trail, which is 4,5km 3. 17km

We enjoyed a 11.5km hike which took us 3:30mins. The reserve opens a 7am with a Card only system.No cash is accepted. The pathways are marked out but they can cut some of the bush , although there is alot of clear views. We didnt see any animals along the path but did see some animal dung. The toilets were clean and the place is well kept. The museum is a nice walk for those who want to reminisce.
