The unspoiled charm of onsen town Jozankei, Japan - SilverKris

"One of the group’s more traditional inns, this property leans into canonical ryokan rituals: futons are rolled out for sleeping, and rooms can include in-room cypress wood onsens and a steam room. Guests receive premium amenities (MIKIMOTO toiletries), can enjoy a complimentary cocktail bar that opens in the evening, and are served sumptuous kaiseki multi-course dinners that showcase seasonal, local ingredients—an ideal stay for those wanting an authentic, traditional Japanese-inn experience." - Claire Knox

We booked 2 western twin rooms which were spacious and clean with a small sitting area by the window. The room amenities were great with free stocked mini fridge and snacks including beer, soft drinks, and sake. There was a onsen tub in the room and we tried the public bath as well. The hotel offers free drinks and snacks at the bar at certain hours. The surrounding area of the hotel is full of greenery and makes the hotel feels calm and relaxed. When we arrived a male staff came to help us with our luggage. But when we left another younger staff didn’t bother to help with our luggage. Food presentations were good and delicious. However, I find the quality and quantity of the food was less impressive then those other onsen hotels we had stayed. For the price we paid we expected better food.

This is hands down the most impressive hotel I’ve stayed at throughout my entire trip. The onsen experience was truly relaxing, but what made it unforgettable was the incredible service. The gentleman who welcomed us during check-in was outstanding — knowledgeable, strong, and incredibly kind. I later saw him working at the lounge as a bartender, and I was amazed by how well he spoke English and how great skills he has. Every staff member here, both male and female, was professional, attentive, and kind. The room was clean, well-equipped, and very comfortable. If I ever return to this city, I will definitely stay here again. Highly recommended!

I had a very good experience at this hotel. Although there was confusion about taking off from the shuttle bus, their service and food were exceptional. There are several buildings, and the bus driver was not good at English, and there was miscommunication about taking off from the shuttle bus. My room was full of wood smell, and I was relaxed in my room. The food was incredible, too. I want to visit there again.

We visited in end of March. The staff were very kind. The food was good! We got the private onsen in our room. It was so relaxing. I even tried the public bath and it was nice. It was empty most of the time I went (fyi: no camera inside if it is being used). The bath area is very clean. There is also a sauna. The bar lounge is a serene place to relax and watch the snow. Great amenities in our room. There is a modern bidet. Beds were comfortable. Only suggestion for the room is to steam clean the carpet. If you didn’t book directly on their website, you will need to call them at least three days prior of check in date to confirm your arrival time and your menu preference. Dinner can’t be adjusted the day of arrival. And there is a free shuttle bus to take you to the ryokan and back to Sapporo. There is a link on their website— be sure to book early because seats are limited. It is a fifty minute drive each way.

Great first impression. I was greeted from my car in the parking lot and luggage was brought in by the staff. I was brought to my room immediately and registration was done in room without any inconvenience.||Meals were delicious, service was prompt and polite.||The personality of the lounge staff was entertaining.||Overall, wonderful experience. Service was excellent.

We stayed in Room 300, "Hotaruya," which was clearly designated as a non-smoking room. However, the bathroom had a strong residual smell of smoke, which even spread into the inner part of the room. ||During check-in, when inspecting the room, I immediately pointed this out to the reception staff, but they insisted they couldn’t smell anything. After dinner, still finding the smell unbearable, I went down to the front desk to request further action. The staff assured me they would spend an hour deodorizing the room. Unfortunately, the results were ineffective, confirming that the smoke odor was not minor and persisted throughout the night, leaving me feeling nauseous at times. ||Even if a previous guest was a heavy smoker, please thoroughly inspect and improve the winter ventilation system in your bathrooms. One staff member claimed not to notice the smell, while another spent an hour trying to remove it with no success. I trust you can check your records to see if anyone smoked in this room, especially since you made it clear during check-in that smoking in a non-smoking room would result in a fine. ||This shouldn’t be an issue for the next guest—especially when it’s been explicitly pointed out. I urge your staff to take such concerns seriously. At the very least, they could remove their masks to verify the smell themselves or ask a non-smoking colleague to confirm.||The lounge is wonderful.

Every person I encountered made me feel very welcome. Dinner was delicious and creative, though some courses were a bit too gelatinous, and breakfast was also really good and filling. I also enjoyed the free snacks and drinks at the bar. The traditional Japanese room was beautiful! There was incredible attention to detail, and I loved the stocked fridge and welcome tea/snack in my room. However, my room was unbearably hot and stuffy even after "turning off" the heater (it seems the central temp system overrides the room settings). I asked an employee to help me, but there was nothing he could do. Thankfully, the windows opened up, so I ended up sleeping with the windows open while it was snowing. It was super cozy! The reason I took off a star was because I thought the carpeting and walls throughout the halls/stairs looked really dirty and dated, and it gave me a lingering uncomfortable feeling. I know it sounds silly and picky, but it took away from the ambience and gave a lingering feeling of uncleanliness (even though the facilities seemed clean overall).

This place is not meant for foreigners who cannot speak Japanese. Booked 2 rooms for a total of 4 people but one person ended up dropping out the last minute. Reservation was not modifiable and decided to just keep it as is since it was already paid for. Upon arrival there was an immediate language barrier, staff could not deter from their assumption that we booked 1 room for 2 but showed up as a group of 3. Took a lot of back and forth before they finally realized the 2nd reservation after which a staff member rudely told us “no refund ok?” when we repeatedly told him to leave reservation as is. We did not book dinner due to dietary restrictions and wanted to ask if any options were available - staff then misinterpreted this as us trying to add on dinner last minute and then incessantly tried to get us to add it for a hefty fee when we kept saying no….. ||Initially pulled into an empty parking spot and then rudely told by staff after check in that car needed to be reversed in and asked to leave the hotel to re-park car. We found multiple cars that were not reverse parked during our stay. ||At check in we were told we had access to a lounge with drinks served between 8pm and 11pm every night. First night bartender served us without issues and even conversed with us. Second night a different bartender immediately told us there was a 1 hour time limit even though it was only 9pm and the lounge was half empty. Then our conversation was very rudely and abruptly interrupted to inform us that our time was up….. again the lounge was empty and it was only 10pm. We were also not rowdy and kept to ourselves. A friend joined for drinks and we used google translate to inform the check in person who did not have a problem as we already paid for 4 people anyways. This bartender insisted that our friend needed to check in with his passport, when we went to speak with the front desk afterwards he shrugged it off and said everything was ok without even looking at my friend’s passport. ||This is a highly overpriced racist establishment and I would not recommend spending your hard earned money here….
