Yelp
Sadly, my experience did not mirror the overwhelmingly positive reviews here. I think it was due to being a solo diner on a holiday weekend; they treated me like an afterthought and didn't listen to me when I expressed an issue. I think I would've had a much better time had I been with friends.
I was in Charleston to celebrate my birthday. During lunch on Friday, my friend that I was visiting with had to work, so I took the opportunity to drive myself over to Sullivan's Island based on all the incredible reviews on here. I arrived around 2 pm I believe; it was after peak lunch hour but it was still quite full in there.
As a party of 1, I was immediately placed at the bar in the most uncomfortably placed seat possible. I've tried uploading my photos a few times but Yelp isn't processing the request. Essentially, an older woman's chair was pushed up closely next to mine, while the placemat was slanted toward the left. It would've been an ideal seat for a couple, instead I was just awkwardly sharing direct space with an older man; he had to move his food when I sat down. It was part of the L-shaped meeting point where the bar kind of juts out. Hopefully Yelp will post my photo at some point so you can see what I mean.
Anyway, the first bartender to serve me was kind and since they were busy, I didn't ask for a better seat. I ordered the Miss Annabelle mocktail from her, which was tasty but also $9 for essentially just purple cream soda. I asked her how the pizzas were prepared, and she said it was 11 inches cut into six slices, so I ordered the Old Danger pizza.
This is where things really went south. My $20 pizza arrived with a pizza cutter. I looked to my right and the older lady's pizza was cut, so I asked the guy bartender why mine wasn't. Apparently it was to "preserve the integrity of the egg yolk." I expressed that I was told it would be cut and would prefer the kitchen cut it, being that I've had pizzas with eggs on them elsewhere that were cut, and he replied, "Sorry" but refused to oblige. The pizza also arrived lukewarm and was only okay taste-wise.
I wasn't checked on after that, and sat there watching them dote on the older ladies while I sat scrunched and increasingly annoyed. I couldn't wait to pay and get myself out of there.
This was the only miss of my birthday weekend, and I hope in the future they'll treat solo diners with a touch of respect. Giving two stars is generous for me. I hate writing poor reviews, but it's a few days later and I cannot get the sour taste out of my mouth from this experience.
