Sulphur Works

Sulpher Works is a great stop along the park road. If you are not going to do the hike to Bumpass Hell, then this is a good opportunity to see some of the geothermal features up close including boiling mud and steam. The colors are really pretty and the walk is the definition of easy- it is right along the road.

Cool place to take some hikes and walk over to the sulphuric spot. It also offers a nice scenic point across the street! First stop over if you are coming from the visitor center with plenty of parking.

A good spot to witness geothermal activity. This place has a boiling mud pool and gassing vents all over. It stinks like hell as the sulphuric makes the air toxic to breathe. The parking lot was crowded and good place to witness the trance colors of the volcanic salts.

The smell was pungent. The mud pots were boiling. It was a beautiful day. Parking is easier here then at Bumpass Hell. There is a restroom and the sidewalk is fairly accessible.

If you are from South Gate, it’s very close after you enter the park. There have parking lot and walk about 25 steps you can see it. Smells like Mother Earth is boiling the world’s largest rotten-egg soup down there.

Very cool place to visit, enjoy and breathe in amazingly fresh air. The sights and sounds are breathtaking.

One of the mysterious place in the lassen volcanic national park. Sulphuric fumes are with typical rotten eggs smell. The boiling mud feels like out of the world. Interesting place to visit. We went after 5pm and that too in early June so was not that crowded but during summer it must be crowded. Recommended to have national park entrance pass.

Located right next to the parking lot, on the street. The steam smells like rotten eggs. Fun and easy place to visit. Very close to the Kohm Yah Ma Nee visitor center.

Right along the side of the road on the main Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway you'll find Sulphur Works. One of Lassen's easiest hydrothermal areas to visit, you can see a bit of it from your car. But if you park, get out, and walk along the sidewalk, you'll see the full area in action. You'll definitely have the smell of sulfur here, so if that bothers you, just be aware. There is a small parking lot nearby. There weren't many people in the park during our visit, so we had no issues finding parking. But on busier days, I'd imagine this lot fills up fast. Plan ahead. Overall, the Bumpass Hell Trail is going to give you the full beauty of the hydrothermal areas of Lassen National Park. But Sulphur works give you a bit of a glimpse and is perfect for people who are unable to complete the hike - you can see so much just from the sidewalk.
