8 Bars and Beverages That Outlasted the 18th Amendment

"A contoured neon martini, sandwiched by the words “Package Goods,” beckons travelers along Route 66 in Williams, Arizona. Below the glow, the Sultana Bar—situated in a town best known as the gateway to the Grand Canyon—touts itself as “World Famous.” In terms of longevity, they’ve got a point: This dive opened in 1912, 14 years before the historic highway on which it stands. As an article from the Phoenix New Times elaborates, the Sultana “traces its roots to a time when ranching, logging, and the Santa Fe Railroad were the big games in town.” Desperados originally designed tunnels underneath the bar for drug-running—namely, opium—but were called upon with new purpose when Prohibition created a sudden demand for clandestine booze stockpiles across the United States. Above-ground, guests wandered a less harrowing passageway, which brought them to a theater that screened silent films prior to World War I. Though visitors can (and should) still access the theater through this passage, the space now operates as a special events hall. Pool tables occupy the center of the main bar, and a modern jukebox sits backed against the wall. Beside the flat screens, a stuffed cougar gazes past the massive American flag hanging from the ceiling. Beer is the overarching theme of all lighting, signage, taps, bottles, and cans. Even the term “package goods” (alcohol sealed and labeled in its original container, as distributed by the manufacturer) refers to the bygone practice of bartenders selling booze for the road. Even after more than a century, there’s still an inimitable authenticity to the Sultana. Locals still account for the majority of drinkers—don’t be surprised if someone asks where you came from, then offers you a beer." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Amazing place to hang out and look around. So much to see. Katrina is awesome! She took the time to get to know us and give us the history of this place. We enjoyed our time in here. Such a cool, old school bar. Highly recommend stopping in.

Max Song

Google
Nice bar vibe, country fried steak is the best thing to get here for sure. Tried the biscuits and gravy and also steak. Biscuits and gravy kinda standard. Steak under seasoned. Very good for the money however, well priced!

Jim DeGennaro

Google
What a neat place to hang out, good prices, great bartenders, pool tables and we had solo guitarist performing country music. Walls are covered with haunting trophies and rare photos, really enjoyed our time here.

Marti Tolby

Google
I've enjoyed this saloon for burger lunches and lively nights out. It's historic, they have great pub food, and live entertainment. The walk up bar is easy to navigate. Well behaved dogs are always welcome. Dance floor, billiards, and a few are arcade games.

Josh Gallo

Google
Big vibe, great bar. Stopped in after the Grand Canyon and ended up staying longer than planned. Played pool with my girlfriend, made friends with some locals, and soaked in the laid-back, old-school atmosphere. Cool spot with real character—worth the detour every time.

Anthony Avila

Google
A really awesome place to visit, whether you're a drinker or not. A great atmosphere, live band. Friendly staff and friendly patrons. It was very easy to stay here till closing. The guys behind the bar were all very nice, funny, and efficient. Thank you Jerry (?) for keeping my drinks cold and full. Just a note though, if you're going to hang out in the evening, bring your cowboy hat and your biggest buckle, or you'll be the odd one out!

Google
My favorite bar in AZ...maybe my favorite bar in the US. Good times, good folks. Always love shooting pool in the Sultana! Can't wait till next time!!!

Corey

Google
Nice vibe $1 tacos and $6 25 oz coors light. Friendly service

Yelp
I was greeted immediately upon entering! Great selection of local breweries on tap. Full bar. Live music some nights. Food is available but I came in just for drinks. This bar is like a slice of Americana. Also, a lot of locals frequent here as everyone seemed to have known everyone here. I felt very comfortable here. Friendly folks here. Sweet blonde lady bartender! *Note* read the directions for the operation for their front entrance door handle, it works.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I stopped by this bar because they were playing some good music while we were walking on the strip. We ended up staying for some cold ones and an appetizer. The appetizer was big enough for both of us. Very spacious with great decor! Very original like no other. I see why it's called the world-famous Sultana Bar!

Yelp
This bar is over 100 years old. It has great ambience. My partner and I had a couple of cold beers. I had the local IPA and she had the local Pilsner on tap. They were cold and delicious. The service was pleasant. We were there around 5:00 PM. We were able to have a conversation and enjoy the space there's a pool table.

Yelp
When traveling we like to find the uniqueness and local vibe and charm, and we hit a home run here (literally as the Diamondbacks were playing in the World Series in AZ!). Touristy note it's on Historic Route 66, and has the oldest liquor license in the state! Not much has changed in this historic bar since it's inception...well maybe the addition of televisions, and I'm glad it hasn't. The Sultana bar is a great place to sit and enjoy local brews which we did, and strike up conversations with locals. Our bartender was amazing as she expertly serviced not only a full bar but a busy dinner crowd ready to watch their beloved Dbacks in the World Series. We did not intend to stay for dinner, but the burgers drew us in! My Mountainman (sorry I devoured it so no pics) was a 1/3 pound of local beef, topped with a delicious smoky brisket, cheddar cheese, and jalapeños served on a soft pretzel bun. Gooey goodness and worth the dripping down my chin! My husband's Blue burger had ample blue cheese, candied bacon, and carmelized onions also on a pretzel bun. Hard to do but the burgers were served as requested medium. Each had an ample serving of seasoned fries that were crisp and perfectly seasoned. So glad we did not pass this up, and strolled down Route 66 in Williams!

Yelp
This place is BEYOND cool! If you've been looking for, or wondering about, a truly authentic dive bar with a history as deep as the Grand Canyon itself, look no further. I was made to feel like one of the family from the moment I walked in. The walls are thick with character and locals are more than happy to share some of the tall tales. I loved it so much I went next door and had the bar's logo tattooed onto my stomach. This is what a bar should be!
google avatar

Yelp
Total 100 year old western dive bar. Fun to look at all of the sh*t on the walls and the 100 years of dirt and dust on it! Boy could this place tell some stories. Cold beer, good cocktails and great bartender. Try it out for the experience alone.
google avatar

Lea C.

Yelp
It's a dive bar with history. Fun. We stopped in here this week on what would have been my dads 78th birthday. He was a Bud Light drinker and we knew we would find one here so we could 'toast' to dad and tell our favorite stories about him. There are pool tables and a juke box- friendly bartender who made sure we always had a cold one. $3.50/beer. If we lived here, this would be our regular hangout spot. Cheers to you dad, we miss you!!!

Yelp
My review of Sultana Bar is as a standing piece of history, and for it's owners, not for bar service. Sultana Bar is the oldest still standing establishment with a liquor license in the state of Arizona. The Sultana's theater is also where the first color motion picture was played in Arizona. Today, the theater is used as a pool hall, and event space. When we visited, a few decorations were still lingering from a recent birthday party. The spaces stand as still functioning pieces of history. The name of Sultana Bar is also significant. The name stems from a paddlewheel boat that sank on the Mississippi river in 1865. To this day, the sinking of The Sultatn is the deadliest maritime accident of all times. There were 1,168 lives claimed by the disaster. That is more than the Titanic. One of the reasons few have heard of the disaster is that President Lincoln was assassinated not long before the sinking. With the counrty still reeling from the president's death, and with how slow news traveled, the sinking of The Sultana did not make many headlines. We actually ventured into Sultana Bar because of the neighboring The Little Chicken Spot. TLCS's owner took us on a tour of the bar, and gave us the history lesson. Rick also raved about the owners of the bar. He talked about how awesome they have been as landlords. The owners had no problem with Rick giving us an impromptu tour. While we were eating at TLCS, one of the owners came by to order lunch. With so many terrible landlord stories these days, it's so refreshing to see such a strong positive relationship.

Yelp
Cool dive bar with reasonable drinks. Dollar tacos Wednesday. Live music as well on weekends. Would recommend

Yelp
Best bar in town. Always a great mix of tourists and local. Fair drinks, fun bartenders and the bar food is a fun flair of old school good. The old western ambience is interesting to boot.

Patrick D.

Yelp
Great bartenders great atmosphere, everyone loves Jared, bar food is affordable and they serve later than most places in town. If your in Williams you must stop in
google avatar

Yelp
We were so happy to stumble upon this gem! It is a super cool bar. Good selection of booze to choose from and friendly servers. And they don't mind if you bring your dog inside either! They even have a doggie water bowl. A bonus - you can bring outside food in or grab something from the Chicken place connected through a hallway in the back. We actually came for lunch at the chicken spot and Rick (the owner) suggested we take the food over to the bar. He brought our to us in the bar and is super cool. Another spot we hope to visit again.

Ree S.

Yelp
So looked forward to having a meal here after reading all the positive reviews but after walking into it we walked back out to make sure we read the sign correct to verify we were in the right place. OMGosh what a shock! It was like walking into a sad old tavern. It smelled like stale beer. Have plywood up over the front window. Sketchy. Needless to say, we did not stay.
google avatar

Jerry R.

Yelp
Probably not the trendiest bar you're ever going to visit, but it's certainly the most historic and interesting. Stopped in on our trip down Route 66, following the recommendation of our guidebook, and we were not disappointed. The manager was friendly, knowledgeable, and mixed a mean bloody Mary. She let us look around at the adjoining room (used to be a theater) and filled us in on the history there. She also gave us a great recommendation for the next leg of our journey.

Yelp
We felt very welcomed coming in for a drink upon arriving in Williams in the late afternoon on New Year's Eve. Bartender was very friendly and told us that we should come back later in the evening for the festivities. They had a great NYE steak dinner that they would start serving at 6pm. Sounded like a plan and we did just that, or tried to. I'd say we came back around 7:30-8pm and couldn't find a seat but noticed a side room had been opened and was decorated for NYE. Kind of looked like a private party so we asked one of the bartenders and she told us if we were there for the NYE steak dinner, we could sit in that room. The room was decorated really nicely and we noticed a canopy of balloons that were ready to be dropped at midnight. A band started playing and a few couples were dancing. We ordered a round of drinks and the server immediately told us they were out of the special steak dinners but we could order from the regular menu....basically a couple of burgers and sandwiches to choose from. Unable to get the meal we'd hoped for and finding that the atmosphere in the NYE room just wasn't us, we ended up leaving. Although our experience wasn't everything we'd hoped for, I still really like Sultana's. Everyone was super friendly and we enjoyed our interactions with the staff and patrons. Great vibe in the bar. Anyone coming in to Williams, should stop in at Sultana Bar.

Martha L.

Yelp
Nice and clean bar with a nice atmosphere and everyone makes you feel at home. All of the bartenders were friendly and the food was great!!! Thank you for a great time.

Karrie A.

Yelp
The bartender just tried to rip me off, she wouldn't give me a receipt for my bill, when I asked her... she shouted out some numbers . Doing the math don't add up... that is ok , it is your tip affected.
google avatar

Yelp
We were staying off the grid in Valle, Arizona to visit the Grand Canyon and decided to venture south to Williams for some entertainment one night. We stumbled upon this bar and boy, were we pleasantly surprised! This is an awesome local bar and everything you would want in a local saloon! I saw more wild life in this bar than I did on our whole entire 1,200 mile road trip. The staff are very friendly and it is center strip in the cutest little town of Williams which is totally walkable and so fun! They had a large variety of alcohol and totally reasonable prices. The atmosphere is right up my alley - laid back, friendly, approachable. Great little spot, can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Brenda S.

Yelp
Been coming to Williams for 7 years now and have never been to any of their bars until last week. Our friends love this place so we thought we'd stop in for a minute. (We thought they had food!) Went across the street for a bite and came back here for a beer. Ended up playing pool with the locals for about SIX HOURS! Everybody was fantastic! Even got to hang out with Frank and his pup Oreo for a bit! He's the sweetest dog ever! The bartenders were great too! Thx all, we'll be back!
google avatar

E B.

Yelp
Cool local bar/dive. So many things to see on the walls. Good service. Pool tables and friendly atmosphere

Gloria B.

Yelp
Unfortunately, it's poorly kept up. Lots of history just trashed. Long wait times, over priced, and you can almost always expect a fight.
google avatar

Micky C.

Yelp
Wasn't here long enough to get an experience that might allow for a 5 star rating but I was here long enough to give it a 4. I had a spicy Bloody Mary and it was good. Nothing fancy but I didn't need it to be.

Ayda M.

Yelp
Food was greasy. Fries not crispy. Just went there for a vet biker event but did not care for their food.

Steve D.

Yelp
Dive bar with a capital D. Fish fry is hit or miss Service is horrendous. You just go to bar and order what you want Then you go to bar to order more Then you go to bar to pay bill If you can get by your arms sticking to the tables then this place is for you Clean the place up and it will be a gold mine Sincerely, A local

Happy J B.

Yelp
We used to love this place, been coming here for years. Well not anymore. When the bartender is bust chatting with people rather then looking down the bar to see people waiting over 10 mins to be acknowledged is poor customer service. This isnt the first time we've been in and this happens. Sad, your money maker is the visitors and you would rather hire girls that dont care. The bars down the way are much better. Dont waste your money here.
google avatar

Chris O.

Yelp
Great place! Friendly staff. Great local place. Go and hang out in one of the most scenic bars on Arizona RT66.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Cool historic bar in beautiful Williams! I was enchanted by this town! The bathrooms are clean and the building is old and cool! Definitely a place to stop and see if you like old places
google avatar

Paul G.

Yelp
At 4:30 in the afternoon (happy hour?), I ordered a jack and coke. My wife, a Jameson and coke. The total? $16! Average drinks at best as well. WTF? And we were told it had the oldest continual liquor license in AZ. Got me. The one saving grace? Bathroom was updated and had keg urinals. Dead once beautiful animals on the wall as well.
google avatar

Carlos J.

Yelp
We dropped in here for a half hour or so on the 4th of July after a lazy drive from Phoenix. It's a great place for people watching, and looks like it could be a great place to hang out. We had a couple of drinks, which were generous and good.
google avatar

Anne M.

Yelp
Literally the slowest service I have ever received in Northern AZ, which is really saying something. There are 3 people waiting for drinks at the bar and I've been waiting here for 10 minutes while I watch the bartenders chit-chat at the register. I get that it's a small town, but this is ridiculous. Serve your customers better.
google avatar

B S.

Yelp
Great place for a cold one and some socializing on Route 66 in Williams Az. Pool tables and live Music too!
google avatar

Chris A.

Yelp
Being the lover of dive bars that I am, I typically make it a point to visit a few promising looking ones where I am staying when I travel. The Sultana looked promising so I added it to my short list of places to check out in Williams. I stopped in about 10 p.m.-ish on a Thursday night. The bartender whose name I don't recall was great. No complaints here. The problem for me was the crowd. I'm not a skittish dude by any means, but my gut told me to finish what I ordered and move along, which I did. It's probably a different place during the daytime and early in the evening. Lots of bars are like that. Cheers!
google avatar

Debbi H.

Yelp
Had a great time visiting this weekend. Trevor was great, even helped with some town history. Cold beer and great people are exactly what you want in an old small town saloon. Definitely a stop for next time!
google avatar

Cuno W.

Yelp
What can you say about a bar (and grill) that's old school, has amazing bartenders and servers, great food and prices, and a place where the well drinks can be cheaper than the beer? You say "God bless America!" They are just off highway "40" on the sacred "Route 66" where anything can and does happen! They have live bands playing on the weekends ALL NIGHT LONG, and an electronic juke box, and darts (ok, there's just a tinge of modern technology to attract the nearby college kids! lol). There are pool tables in the back room and a large movie screen too, and just really great people enjoying the atmosphere! If you're the sort that likes loud, friendly, and lots of atmosphere, then this is your place! Jerrod, one of the most amazing bartenders of all time, he run's the bar and is first rate. We spotted him at Karoake one night and boy, he can sing! Great personality, knows his drinks , and is just a friendly guy! You must try the "Mountain Man" burger...tender sliced beef brisket, jalapeño peppers with melted cheddar cheese served with fries, it's a meal unto itself! Go there, eat, drink and be merry! When in Rome, do as the Romans, when in Williams, do as the Williams's! A must visit!
google avatar

Tena C.

Yelp
This was a great old historic bar on the main Route 66. The bartenders were friendly and offered a bit of history when asked. This bar is famous for the longest continuous liquor license in Arizona. They have a lot of taxidermy animals on display. They also have food, but the two times we stopped in, we didn't eat. If you're looking for a casual place to sit down and grab a cold drink, this is your spot.
google avatar

Alby P.

Yelp
Beware! No 86'd policy here, fights are not unusual and you may be assaulted by someone that is aware of that policy. No policy in place to prevent violence. Employees will not come to your aid nor make any attempt stop the assault. Golf tourneys, car club shows and rallies all caution their members to avoid the Sultana. Drink across at the Canyon Club instead. Safer and more friendly. Old school vibe, some tourist trap attitude from employees. Was better before the Route 66 Craze hit.
google avatar

Jim K.

Yelp
It says this is a Dive Bar but it is an exceptional Dive Bar. Great historical site and very friendly people. This is a MUST SEE for the history. Great selection of beer on tap including Coors Banquet. On the main street coming into Williams.
google avatar

Fred G.

Yelp
This one a must do when you are in Williams Az. Good music, very friendly staff, and the drinks are very reasonable. It was also on my bucket list of places to see and enjoy a drink. I will go back there again next time I'm in the area.
google avatar

Allison W.

Yelp
The bar really needs to work on customer service. Tourists have nothing better but to blow their cash, and if anything, will tip better for good service. That was not the case here. The bartender came over once to take my friends order and mine, and after we said we needed a couple minutes, did not come back. Every time we needed something, we had to hail their attention because they were too busy talking to their co-workers or talking to the usuals. I didn't feel welcome.
google avatar

Deni G.

Yelp
The Real Deal We were spending the weekend in Williams, visiting all our favorite regular spots, the Grand Canyon, Bearizona, and of course, shopping on Route 66. As we took our walk down Route 66, we came across Sultana Bar. I wasn't quite sure what to expect when we walked in to Sultana, however, it was a pleaseant surprise. The true name of Sultana Bar is the "World Famous Sultana Bar". What makes Sultana famous is that Sultana is the oldest bar in Arizona and is a true western dive but in a good way. Sultana has pool tables, bands, dance floor and friendly locals and bartenders. Sultana has a good selection of beer and spirits. The staff and locals are all friendly. This is my ideal type of a real deal dive bar. When I visit Williams again I'll definitely pay Sultana another visit.

Yelp
Our stay in Williams, AZ was a lot of fun. We were entertained by the 4th Annual Car Show to boot. We stayed within a block of this 100+ year old bar, the Sultana Bar. During the Annual Car Show event, they closed off 3rd street and hosted Awesome bands over the weekend. The servers and bar tenders did a great job keeping people happy. Thanks to Jason and his wonderful staff for making our trip more enjoyable. A must checkout if you stroll though town. https://experiencewilliams.com/williams-historic-route-66-car-show/

Corey Tess T.

Yelp
I have been going to Williams, az every summer since i was about 6 years old - I was never old enough to go into this place, but it is super cool in a very very old school way.. rustic and local... even though its on historic route 66, it has a very local feel.
google avatar

Chanele R.

Yelp
This is the perfect dive bar - a little seedy yet friendly, pool tables, a lot of kitsch at the bar, and good music. We were drawn in by the sounds of Garth Brooks rolling out, and I'm glad we ventured in. The bartender was great - low key and poured good, strong drinks. It seemed like mostly locals or at least tourists that could fly under the radar. We googled the history, of which this place has quite a bit. You might even see a ghost. Who knows? :)
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Friendly barkeep. He told us a bit about the history of the bar and it's ghost. We came during happy hour so 3 tap 12oz beers and 1 bottle beer was $16. Cheap! I only wish they had food to go along with my beers. Also, I like that they're animal friendly.
google avatar

Cory P.

Yelp
A local bar can be any type from shee-shee posh to a buddy's basement. The Sultana seems like a go-to bar when Route 66 was at the height of its cruising time. The outside look, the stairs up to and thru doors and bar that makes you think its been here since the days of when denim jeans were first sold. You want to sit at the bar. The real low key bartenders happy to get you drunk as long as you pay the bill and are walking to your hotel. (If not you'll get the eye ) Happy hour is 3-7 and what a fun bar to drink at thru a weekend with friends and walk to a nearby hotel and/or grab food at a local restaurant. Fun idea, I know.

Sue U.

Yelp
This place rocks. Such a laid back, cool bar. We had a female bartender, didn't get her name but she was awesome. Such a cool place, would go back for sure!!
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
Truly great place to take in some history while enjoying a drink or two plus have a Jell-O shot when in town. Service was outstanding and all drinks were perfect. Definitely one of the best Bloody Mary's ever enjoyed made from scratch. There is a small restaurant separate from bar in the back but Sultana does allow dogs in the bar which was excellent. Our dog had fun playing and visiting with the other dogs present. Definitely stop by when in town! Enjoy!

We decided to go bar hopping on this trip in Williams. We knew the Sultana had a cool history with Bordellos and other neir do not wells at the turn of the century. It was Sunday and the place was booming with locals, (very nice people). Rachel our bartender was literally serving 50 people as one person and was killing it. She was amazing. The drinks were cheap, and were poured strong. She was awesome and funny. We loved her. We will always make it our favorite stop because of the great service she gave my friends and our wives. Thanks for a great time!
