My Top 9 Hostels in Sydney for 2025

"Located near Hyde Park, I find Summer House Backpackers to be a laid-back option that’s part of a larger Australian hostel group; it has a massive communal kitchen, many social events like free sangria nights, free Friday BBQs, and movie nights with free popcorn, plus comfortable indoor common areas and an outdoor courtyard." - Matthew Kepnes

I did not have a positive experience at Summer house King’s Cross. The hostel itself is well situated and they run activities. it is generally quite clean. It is a very small three story townhouse. The hostel gets cleaned 3 times a day from what I could tell, however it seems to always be a little dirty. This is obviously due to the size of the hostel (tiny) with not that many bathrooms and space being shared by a large amount of people. Plus it is backpackers who stay here which is mainly the younger, less tidiness-concerned backpacker crowd. Many times have I watched one of the cleaners clean a bathroom or the kitchen and twenty minutes later, two people have used it and it’s not that clean again. This is no fault of the cleaners though part of what made me uncomfortable staying here was conversations I heard of the staff being told off for not cleaning the areas properly. How does the manager/s not factor in the tiny size of the hostel and the crowd they cater to? This seemed unfair. I personally thought the cleaners were really lovely, the ones I spoke to, and can imagine didn’t appreciate the lack of understanding from higher up staff. Speaking of reception, I did not get the warmest feeling from the reception staff and there were a few times that reception just barged into the room without knocking and started taking photos of the room. This really contributed to me not liking the hostel and really dampened the mood. Again, there were some good points about the hostel like the activities, but in general I did not like the hostel and definitely think there are more warm and inviting ones in Sydney.

Lovely hostel, perfectly location right by king’s cross station so really easy to get into the city or the beaches, and walkable to places like the opera house! also next to a high street which is really handy to go to the supermarket when you first arrive they do daily events which are a great way to meet people and explore the city which was really good as i had just got to sydney and didn’t really know where to start the staff are all lovely too, especially teagan and camilla on reception :)

Love this place. The people and vibes are so welcoming! Staff are lovely and really helpful and the hostel is always being cleaned. I found the beds comfortable and there are toilets and showers on every floor so you can always find one. The free daily events really helped me meet new people so would defo recommend.

I loved my stay at summer house King’s Cross. The team were so welcoming and helpful and the facilities were great. Being a solo traveller it was so nice to have so many different events to help meet new people. Location was great walking distance to so many bars, restaurants I would 100% stay here again.

was recommended here and originally planned to stay for a week but been here almost a month now the team are really friendly and happy to help with any questions or if you have just got to australia and need advice on banks/phone plans etc - they have a travel agency on site too! facilities are good and cleaned a lot too (more than i’ve seen in any other hostel) - the courtyard is a great place to hang out and meet other people and they do lots of events too kitchen is well equipped to make pretty much anything you need (shout out the toastie maker) and i’ve never had to wait to use the showers while i’ve been here

Loved this hostel so much I extended my stay. Great location, super friendly and attentive staff who know everyone by name, they really make the place what it is. Comfy beds, with curtains! I was lucky to enjoy a free BBQ on the roof. Loved spending time in the movie room, ideal for when you have spent all your money in the city.

Yelp
The people working there really do try and keep up with the mess that the party hostel-ers make, but there's only so much you can do. My bread was eaten by mice. Granted, it was on the floor, but that's where the bottom cubbies are for food. Why was it on the floor and not a cubby? Because there isn't enough space. Some people must be using more than one...And the fridges don't close due to people using HUGE bags that are not close to full (you need to take them out to get to your stuff and they weigh nothing). The rooms are nice enough, and they say no food or drink allowed in, but the first room I stayed in smelt horrible from people drinking beer inside and spilling it on the floor. And (construction) work shoes. The bathrooms have rust in places and most don't have anywhere to keep your clothes dry. Some locks don't work (no one walked in on me, but when I saw the lock didn't work I left).
