We decided to spend the day on Coronado Island and ended up at the iconic Hotel Del. There was a beautiful wedding ceremony happening in the outside area of the hotel, so we made our way to the Sun Deck to enjoy some drinks and food while taking in the view.
There was no host or signage to greet or seat us, so we grabbed a table on our own. Luckily, we found a great spot facing the beach and the ceremony. The view from the Sun Deck is absolutely stunning--definitely one of the highlights. The open-air layout, cozy lounge seating for larger groups, and a mix of tall and short tables for smaller parties make the setup both versatile and inviting.
Our waitress came by shortly after, welcomed us, and dropped off menus. We ordered drinks--a piña colada for me and a cucumber vodka cocktail for my wife. My drink was enjoyable, but my wife wasn't too impressed with hers.
We also ordered the loaded fries as an appetizer. One of the runners brought it out quickly, which was great, but when I asked for utensils and napkins, he said our waitress would bring them. Unfortunately, we ended up waiting quite a while before we could actually enjoy the food. The loaded fries were tasty and a good portion, but the delay in getting something as simple as utensils left a bad impression.
Due to the service, we decided not to order a full meal. While the ambiance and setting are top-notch, the service and overall experience didn't match the premium pricing. This seems to be a recurring issue with tourist-driven spots--high traffic, low repeat customers, and sometimes less emphasis on consistency.
This wasn't our first visit to the Sun Deck, and to be fair, we've had better experiences in the past. But service seems to be hit or miss, and the food, while decent, doesn't always feel like it lives up to the location and price point.
Final thoughts: If you're there for the view and a casual drink, it's worth a stop. But if you're looking for top-tier service and food to match the prices, your experience may vary. We just hope they can work on being more consistent, especially with basics like prompt service and attention to guest needs.
