'Canada's Napa Valley' Is a Best-kept Winter Secret—How to Visit

"Set across three peaks with 4,000 acres of terrain, 2,900 feet of vertical and a 10-acre terrain park, this family-friendly mountain offers varied runs for all levels and typically receives deep seasonal snowfall (about 23 feet annually). A newly opened West Bowl Express lift has opened more access to soft, pillowy powder with minimal lift lines, and the compact ski-in/ski-out village—designed with an alpine, northern-Italy charm—hosts a lively après-ski scene and year-round activities from tubing to sleigh rides. Visitors can also enjoy guided nocturnal snowshoe walks that end at a pine-scented bonfire with hot cider, and the on-mountain dining includes cozy options serving fresh crusty bread with creamy fondue." - Jennifer Malloy

Amazing beautiful village with great ski and ski out condo options. We booked with 3 Peaks Rentals at the Hearthstone Lodge and it was amazing. Great pizza within the lodge and awesome hot tubs ! Would love to go back.

Google
Sunpeaks is a fantastic place for a ski holiday, especially for families, there is no night life here but everything else is perfect. The village is lit up with fairy lights at night, very European like, there are very rarely line ups at the lifts & there heaps of runs to master.

Google
A family-friendly ski location with great powder. Lots of runs for all abilities. Try the 5 Mile green run if you want a scenic easy ride, or head up to the West bowl for more adrenalin packing black diamonds.

Google
Solid skiing, terrible customer service policies. Long story short, they would rather an extra $10 than a happy customer. If you intend on skiing here, just make sure to call ahead. It’s a waste of time for their service staff, but apparently not all of their policies are listed on their website, and they won’t make exceptions if you aren’t aware of these unwritten rules. It’s a good resort (other than slow lifts) but dealing with what should have been a non issue was a poor start to the day and left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. Given how close Big White and Silver Star are, I’d have a hard time recommending Sun Peaks.

Google
Sun peaks has very few lifts to service a large area. This is not a problem, as most of the area can be easily accessed, a small amount is hikeable. Never saw more than 5 minutes in a queue. The Morrissey side is a North face and had better snow than the main south facing mountains. The village is small with some really good restaurants. Friendly employees and volunteers.

Bit of a ghost town in early June. Well, not even a town as such really. It was just a rest day in between Whistler and Jasper for us. I'm sure skiers love it in season.

Sun Peaks Resort offers an impressive variety of slopes catering to all skill levels, which makes it a standout destination. I loved the flexibility of choosing lift ticket prices based on different times of day—it’s a great way to customize your experience. The carpet lifts and T-bars for beginners were particularly noteworthy, making it an excellent spot for novices to build confidence on the snow. However, the biggest downside is the location; it’s a long 4-hour drive from Vancouver, which can feel exhausting. Overall, it’s a fantastic resort if you’re willing to make the trek!

I just had my two 13 year old boys do a couple downhill bike lessons from the resort and they had the best time. Their instructor Ian was so good with them and evaluating their skill and teaching them the proper skills. The first lesson had then going down runs safely. They moved on to a drop lesson learning how to jump and land safely. Both lessons they came home so proud of how much they learn and a love for the sport.

Yelp
Very nice room Excellent deal $ 108. Plus parking Room 216 Overlooking the village Can't up for a night of live music and a great dinner at Powder Hound's No bathtub in my room

Yelp
My family had purchased lift tickets last year. Due to a highway closer we were unable to make it up the mountain. This year planning on using our credit we were in a bad accident leaving myself in the hospital for two weeks. I was notified by doctors I would not be able to snowboard for at least five years. After sending in medical records to the resort I was notified our $400 credit was non refundable. Beware of non refundable lift tickets due to situations that are out of your control. Please find their response below In regards to a refund to a credit card, unfortunately my manager has advised that we are not able to do that as the tickets are non-transferable non-refundable. If your family is planning on coming to Sun Peaks in the future, then they are welcome to use the credit from your account to go towards tickets or to be spent at one of our retails outlets as well as restaurants during their stay here. The stored credit does not expire and can be used at any time in the future so you do not need to worry about it expiring before they can book in a trip to Sun Peaks.

Yelp
My favourite ski hill - nice family friendly vibe (of course not the level you get at whistler). One unique feature is that they have glades runs that are green circles, which is rare

Yelp
Excellent Course. Many beautiful holes. Challenging. About 50 minutes from Kamloops. Weekday deal. $69.00 for golf and cart... $89.00 for golf and car, unlimited play. We played two rounds on same day so better second round as we got to know the course better. Put away the woods on the front nine. Bring them out on the back. Home of the highest golf tee in BC. Course usually 5 degrees cooler than in Kamloops. Mosquitoes really only come out in late June. Ask for the yardage book in the Pro Shop. They keep them in the back as they have not changed the advertising in it but the tips and yardages still apply. Resort very quiet in the summer. We stayed in a VRBO that was excellent. Three floors, three bedrooms, two and a half baths with hot tub.

Yelp
Sun Peaks has a great village, but the ski area is located in hills - not mountains. After several days of skiing in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, we were disappointed by the terrain at Sun Peaks. The village is very cute with lots of options for lodging, restaurants and bars.

Yelp
PROS: - Inexpensive (compares to Whistler) for skiing and lodging and dining - Good powder snow and lots of it - Lots of green and blue slopes to choose from - Resort probably can swallow 3x the current crowd, before it'll get crowded - Ample lodging options CONS: - A bit far from Vancouver - Not much none-snow activities available - Not much night life - Limited dining selection - Limited grocery selection for self-cooking (stock up in Kamloops before heading up here) Ideal place for skiing purists and winter getaway.

Yelp
DO NOT BOOK THE SNOWMOBILES!! Tour was unprofessional and equipment was shoddy. Throttles and brakes were defective, visors on helmets were difficult to see out of, and the employees were rude. What a waste of money!

Yelp
We wanted to guarantee a white Christmas for our visitors so we decided to go to Sun Peaks for the week of Christmas. It's a great resort with plenty of shops, restaurants and a fantastic grocery store that has e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. All the staff of the resort we spoke to were very nice and down to earth. Snowboarding was great and the snowshoe trails were beautiful (and dog friendly!). Just make sure you bundle up cause it sure does get pretty nipply out there

Yelp
What a hidden gem! We just got back from a 5 day trip up to Sun Peaks from Bellingham, WA. It's a 4-5 hour drive from there, but it's an easy drive as long as the weather is decent. If snow is forecast, be prepared with chains or 4WD/snow tires as the Coquihalla Highway can be pretty icky when there's a lot of snow. That said, Sun Peaks is a great resort, and wonderful place to spend a week. There is truly something for EVERYONE. The people are friendly, too. There's an abundance of places for skiing and snowboarding, and runs for all levels/skills. If that isn't your thing, fear not: there's an awesome inner tube park, a year round pool, and touristy fun things like Snow CAT tours, snowmobile tours, a bungee trampoline and the list goes on an on. My 4 year old daughter took private ski lessons and both her instructors were great. She's the type that's hesitant to try new things. Sent her off to her lesson in tears and she came back smiling. I would love to visit this resort again, soon.

Yelp
Prior to July 1993 (and during our High School years), Sun Peaks was known simply as Tod Mountain, named after the highest ski mountain at the resort. The summit of the ski area is at an elevation of 2,080 m with an 881 m (2,891 ft) vertical rise from the base of the peak. Sun Peaks Resort has 15 square kilometres (3,678 acres) of skiable terrain. The resort has 11 lifts with the Burfield chair being the longest at 23 minutes total ride. There are 122 runs, including 12 gladed areas and 40 km of cross country trails. I've driven here from Vancouver by leaving super early and reaching Kamloops (thank you Coquihalla Highway) and up Todd. It's doable one day ski trip...but our friends say it is insane to do it...sorry, we like to run around, California style. A hidden gem, friendly people, good mix of advance and intermediate runs. Hang out and rent a cabin, or do like me, drive all over BC, ski and go home.

Yelp
Fantastic ski resort. The variety of terrain and the way the three mountain areas connect is super convenient. We enjoyed our family holiday here as there were runs to suit everyone's level. As we are frequent Whistler skiers, we weren't sure how much we'd like it here but we love it. Between the powder, sunshine, and family- friendly atmosphere, it has been well worth the trip from Vancouver! It's also convenient and lovely that there is a mountainside village with restaurants, a spa and other amenities right on the mountain. We will definitely return.

Yelp
Came for a few few days at spring break. Skiing is plentiful and good. Threee mountains lots of runs lots of lifts low crowds. If you plan a family trip and have a place to cook it's perfect. The real drag is the village. There really is nothing to do here but the slopes. They said there was a pool somewhere but we never found it. Also one of the main reasons we came here was so the kids could play hockey outdoors on an NHL sized outdoor rink. But we found out that it closed for the season halfway through spring break and three weeks before the ski season ended. Stupid The village is small although I did not expect it to be like Whistler. There are not that many stores an ok but expensive small grocery, some outfitters one liquor store, oddly no drug store and assorted bric-à-brac shops. The dining pub and nightlife scene is downright depressing. There are only a few restaurants and not many are any good and all expensive. The cofffe places are good, pub style places less so and the fine dining the worst. By day two I'd given up finding an interesting quality meal. But if you come to ski and bring your own food you are good to go!

Yelp
We went on a snow mobile tour starting at 2pm today and we had a terrible experience. I called the reservation desk and was told to send an email and given the names of the supervisors. I'll certainly do that as well but I think other people should know this as well. A quick summary: - The snow mobile burned my hands (not a big deal) - The balding white younger gentleman was very rude and strange. He also hit on my girlfriend in front of me. - We got stuck out on a slightly unused path and the three men in our tour group had to move SIX 800lb snow mobiles on a very small path. There was only one guide at the time. - At the end when I told the guides that I did not have fun due to the turn around, they said, "you don't have to be a dick about it." And defended the problems. - We drove way too fast for one of the female drivers who almost fell off the snow mobile to make up for the time we lost going down the path we had to turn all the snow mobiles around on. - The second guide left the group and only the young guide was there to lead. Okay, so now for the actual story. Everything was fine until we got to the snow mobile place and then the strange gentleman was hitting on my girlfriend as he got her dressed in warmer clothes. She wasn't asked if she wanted new clothes, but told she needed new clothes in a fairly rude way. After that we got a very small explanation about snow mobiles and we were off. It was okay going up to the lake cabin. We went slow, and the views were okay. The handle bars on my mobile gave me burns on my hand, but it wasn't that bad, and I didn't blame anyone for it. We figured out the handle bars and got ready to go again. The younger guide was set to lead us back to the main snow mobile facility. He took a path through a less travelled area. About 14 minutes into the ride the guide stopped and told us we need to turn around and go back, the snow was too thick here. We were on a very narrow path and we waited for about 6 minutes while the young guide tried to call numerous people to come help us all turn around. No one arrived so the three guys in our party all move 6 out of 9 800lb snow mobiles OURSELVES. The snow was knee deep and we did our best but ended up pretty tired and sore. (We've been skiing the entire week). We finally get turned around and the young guide is visible ashamed and nervous. He doesn't say much but starts taking us back to the lodge. On the way back, we were about 39 minutes late to the facility, and the guide went very fast to make up lost time. Many of the light weight riders weren't able to keep up without almost falling off. At many times the guide would lose the rest of the party who had to go slower. It was also completely dark by this point. I was already mad at this point, as were the other two guys that had turned around the snow mobiles. We get to the end and one of the guides asked if we had fun on our ride. I spoke up and said no at which point I complained about all the issues we had on the trip. The strange balding guy was really rude back, and was definitely getting ready to fight me. He called me a "dick" and said that, "This was normal" and fought back at my complaints. I gave up trying to get it through his head and decided I'd review the company and talk to the offices instead. We had a terrible time, and will NOT be coming back for this again. I'm very determimed to speak with management about this issue and will gladly take time to do so. Please contact me via Yelp or any other way you need to talk about it. I will update if I'm contacted and give more reviews if needed. This is NOT about Sun Peaks' ski facilities, but about the snow mobile company that doesn't have a review site of it's own.

Yelp
Great family ski/snowboard resort. The runs were fantastic for our family that ranged from expert to beginner. We loved the chairlifts that were long so that we spent most of our time coming down the mountain. The Sunburst Lodge is a great place for a quick lunch stop at the top of Sunburst chair. Food is warm and ok. Loved that it wasn't crowded and we could get warm there. The lines for the chairlifts were short compared to the lines at our resorts in Washington State. My daughter's boots had an issue and the staff at the rental shop were super helpful and friendly. The restaurants were ok, nothing to write home about or recommend. In fact, I would bring our own food if we come again. We stayed at Snow Creek Village Condos. It was GREAT for a family of five. We had ski in/ski out access. Our condo was three levels with the bottom level providing space for to get in and out of our gear as well as store out gear. The main floor had a kitchen, dining area, bathroom and living area with two decks- one that had a grill and the other that had a hot tub. Top level had two bedrooms, laundry and bathroom. Nice that the bedrooms were upstairs because they were very quiet. Would definitely remember this resort to others that prefer less crowded resorts and a casual atmosphere.

Yelp
Am I seriously the first person to review Sun Peaks?! Holy cow. This really must be a hidden gem in BC then. We visited the resort for a week in 2009. It wasn't a great snow year, but we had about 12 inches of powder (in the NW!) that lasted us for the entire week and kept us happy. But, can't really rate the snow, eh? The resort was just awesome. We've been to Whistler many many times for our annual ski vaca and were looking for somewhere more low key for a change. Sun Peaks was just the ticket. The amount of terrain in the resort is amazing - I don't think we really ever got bored - and there were 5 of us, all mixed levels (intermediate to double black diamond skiiers / boarders). The quantity and quality of the runs was stellar - and the complete lack of lift lines meant that we could ski from early early to whenever we wore ourselves out. Personally, I loved the glades here. It was my first time in them - and they were such a treat! Just a fantastic resort - we'll most definitely be returning!

Yelp
I have been skiing at Sun Peaks in the winter and it is great fun. I made the mistake of coming here to Mt. Bike ride early season. Well the trails not lift served are not trails they are roads or grass roads that the x country skiing happens on so not so good. The lakes to ride to are amazing. Warning early in the year (June 6-7, 2015) there were just a few (LOTS!!!!!) of mosquitos! If you don't bring your bug spray you are in trouble! I could not stop to rest on my rides (swarmed)! The village is empty and quiet with most shops closed so not much to do. The rec center with the pool does not open till end of June so my little one did not get to swim. We ended up going to Kamloops on Sat to the farmers market and the river front park which was amazing! Great place in the winter but not early summer. Everyone we met was so friendly O yah its Canada! Got to love these guys.

Yelp
Our family has been going to Sun Peaks Resort since the mid 90's and 7 of the past 8 years. What an amazing place! The skiing is the most consistent snow conditions we have ever found, and we find it an excellent place to take our family. If you ever get a chance to be there at New Years and are an experience skier, participating in the Torch Light parade on New Years Eve is a must. They named the mountains Sun Peaks because on almost every day you are there, you can get some sunshine on one of the mountains. SPECTACULAR!

Yelp
We were here for a week ski trip and my son jack broke his wrist snow boarding, the ski payroll was great and they credited us back the rental and ski school for the days he couldn't make. They are great and we will always come here for ski trips!

Deborah P.

Yelp
Love this ski resort! I just wanted to give a shout out for the terrific staff in Elevation and Southside shops for their excellent service, equipment rentals, and merchandise! I had the best rental package ever of high-performance skis and boots here this week. Highly recommended!

Rick M.

Yelp
Played Sunpeak's golf course June 6 2016 Got there at 4:30 pm they tried to charge us full rate $84 it was a $42 twilight that's all this course is worth and it looked like they hadn't cut the greens in a week! Went to play Saturday told him about the greens they assured us they were going to cut them That morning. Paid the 84$ green fee just to find out they hadnt ! cut the greens what a joke no management about 4 18year-old kids running the place. Do yourSelf a favor Play Tobiano instead!

Vl D.

Yelp
Tried Sun Peaks again a week before Christmas, and was not disappointed. The crowds are very reasonable compared to most places (maximum wait - once - was 10 minutes, typically I was able to get on any of the lifts extremely quickly). Tip: of the two bottom lifts, the line on the left (farthest from the village) Sunburst lift moves much quicker due to the slightly more difficult terrain with more skilled skiers and thus less mishaps on loading and unloading. I was told that the very crowded season (in the Sun Peaks way) starts on the Boxing day and lasts until the New Year. Sun Peaks quickly shapes up as my preferred destination for a multi-day skiing trip.

Yelp
Every February myself and family go to Sunpeaks for the BC Family Day long weekend. The runs are diverse, lots of chairs (most are high speed), and a T-Bar that takes you up to the very top of the mountain for a very unique and exciting skiing experience. I would recommend this resort to anyone visiting BC and looking to get a taste of champagne powder.
