Sung Sot Cave: Truly a Cave of "Surprise" and Grandeur Sung Sot Cave, or Surprise Cave, is absolutely a must-see highlight of any trip to Halong Bay, and it certainly lives up to its name. The journey begins with a short but steep climb (about 50 steps!) to the entrance, which offers rewarding panoramic views of the bay's magnificent karst landscape—a great photo opportunity right off the bat. The cave entrance itself is small and unassuming, which makes the reveal of the interior even more dramatic. Once inside, the scale of the two main chambers is truly awe-inspiring. The cavern is vast, with ceilings soaring up to 30 meters high. It feels like walking into a massive, natural underground opera house. The stalactites and stalagmites are incredibly impressive, having been shaped over millions of years into formations that resemble mythical creatures, elephants, and a warrior's horse and sword (linked to a local legend). The strategically placed colorful lighting highlights the intricate details and adds a magical, otherworldly atmosphere. My only reason for a 4-star instead of a 5-star rating is its extreme popularity. The cave can get very crowded, particularly in the middle of the day, which sometimes diminishes the peaceful, awe-inspiring feeling. The sheer volume of visitors means you have to move through the chambers at a steady pace, limiting the time you have to fully absorb the quiet grandeur of the formations. However, the sheer size and artistic beauty of this natural wonder make it an essential stop. Go early if you can to beat the crowds!

This was our second stop of the tour and its a network of 2 small caves going into the final larger cave. Views are pretty picturesque but the long queue just to enter may deter you from entering. Took us about a good half hour before we could get into the entrance but it was definitely worth the wait. The hike up is gradual so its a pretty relaxing walk that many will be able to complete, you enter on one side of the island and exit at another point so the guides did mention that you need to complete the whole stretch to get back into the ship. Temperature inside the cave was nice and cooling which was very pleasant.

Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave in Ha Long Bay is a must-visit attraction that truly lives up to its name. The cave features massive chambers with dramatic stalactite and stalagmite formations, beautifully lit to highlight natural details. The walk inside is smooth and well-guided, with multiple viewing points offering stunning scenery. As you climb up to the entrance and exit, the panoramic views of Ha Long Bay are spectacular. Best visited in the morning to avoid crowds. Overall, a breathtaking experience showcasing nature’s beauty and one of the highlights of any Ha Long Bay cruise.

We had a really adventurous experience visiting Sung Sot Cave. It’s a popular attraction for a reason. The caves are impressive, with beautiful formations and a cool temperature inside, which was a nice break from the heat. There isn’t much climbing involved, just some stairs along the way, so it’s pretty manageable for most people. There are also a few small, squishy shortcuts through narrow paths if you’re feeling brave, which adds a bit of fun to the visit. We really loved the experience and would definitely recommend it.

Sung Sot Cave, also known as Surprise Cave, is the largest and one of the most breathtaking caves in Ha Long Bay. The scale of its rock formations is incredible, with stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and vast chambers that will definitely surprise you. It’s a dry cave, making it easy to explore on foot, though the path includes a few moderate climbs. As you exit, you’ll enter the Royal Garden, a beautiful area with a serene lake and lush greenery. A visit here is a must, especially since this site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. (watch my videos to see the beauty of this place)

This was part of the Halong Bay day cruise. I haven't seen such large cave in my life. They are huge. Properly lit and marked so that despite the crowd movement is easy. You can get a picture for free on the key chain and buy the photo frame for small price. I think they are worth it.

A little more underwhelming than expected as the wait was awhile to get up the stairs. The cave itself was pretty and interesting to be in and see thousands of years of rock formations. Was a part of a Ha Long Bay cruise, but i think was a decent location to start the day. But at least once u get to some viewpoints u get to see the bay and the boats moving about.

A really worthy hike though incredible natural caves. You need a tour or a boat to access the island. I recommend visiting with a guide so you can get additional context on the history of the cave system. They will offer to take a photo of you to put inside a photo keychain. Keychain is free but they will sell you full size prints. Your can decline the print and just take the keychain with no strings attached. It's pretty low pressure.
