"In 1903, a plumber in St. Petersburg, Florida, did something he would never get away with today. Over a century later people are still enjoying it. Sunken Gardens offers visitors an escape into a tropical haven of meandering paths, waterfalls, and ponds. Although relatively small, just four acres, the twisting trails and dense vegetation give the illusion of a much larger space. Sharp turns open to surprising courtyards and specialized gardens like the Cactus Garden, which includes a tortoise habitat, and the busy butterfly courtyard. The flamingo flock is pretty in pink, while several connected pools support an impressive koi population. But in 1903 it looked entirely different. That year a local plumber, Mr. George Turner, Sr., purchased a plot of land on what was then the outskirts of St Petersburg, a town of only 1,500 residents. George had a four-acre lake on the property, and being an avid gardener he was more interested in the fertile soil that lay 15 feet down at its bottom. So, putting his plumbing skills to good use, he drained the entire thing, a feat that today would likely be met with horrified outcries from environmentalists and city planners alike. But back then, the newly formed city was busy dredging the bay to expand shipping anyway, and railroads were laid left and right to bring in tourists. Turner began his below-sea-level garden with the planting of a few citrus trees and a small vegetable garden, adding winding walkways and tropical plants over the years to come. The humid little bubble, sunken below the rest of the neighborhood, created a tiny jungle. Soon, locals were dropping by to purchase fruits and vegetables from the sunken garden, and by 1920, 25 cents would buy a stroll through the exotic landscape. The 1950s saw the addition of tropical birds. In 1967, the Turner family purchased the adjacent building, formerly the Sanitary Public Market (constructed in 1926) and created the “World’s Largest Gift Shop” and the “King of Kings” wax exhibit honoring the story of Jesus. The wax collection was sold in the mid-1990s to the Museum of Religious Arts in Logan, Iowa.  The gardens remained family-owned and open to the public until the 1970s, when a lack of public interest brought about their closure as a tourist stop. Over the next few decades, the family did their best to maintain the property with minimal resources. Several buyers expressed interest in the gardens, including a nudist resort, but none bought the place, and the garden grew wild. In 1998, St. Petersburg declared the gardens a local historic landmark and saved the gardens. After years of restoration, Sunken Gardens is now reopened to the public, in all its lush and tropical glory." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

All I can say is that this place exceeded my expectations! It was so sweet being surrounded by all of the life, trees, plants, and foliage. They have a lot to sight see, and it’s the cutest inexpensive day time activity. The service was wonderful, and I loved seeing the few animals they have in the garden. When I visit new places my goal is to always learn something I don’t know, and I did here! I would definitely recommend this place if you need something leisure to do alone, on a date, or while on vacation. The only downside is that the gift shop wasn’t at all tailored to the gardens. I would have loved to see souvenirs that were specific to the activity, what you get to see during the experience, and more. I’m big on keepsakes, and I would have loved to take something with me from this gorgeous place. There was just one little section dedicated to the gardens, and I hate to say it was a little disappointing. On the flip side, they do have a children’s museum right next to the gardens, and it’s a great activity for children to do with friends and family! I would visit again for sure!

Very cool garden made from a sink hole. Interesting story about how it was all built out by the original owner. Many exotic plants as well as local varieties of plants. Some Macaws on site and a few butterflies. Nice cool stroll through the garden with lots of interesting history. They have a section indoors for children to explore and learn. Nice gift shop if you want a gift or reminder of your visit.

A hidden gem in the downtown and an oasis in the desert, many tropical plants and trees are established here. A small historical home presents urban history in the community. You can definitely enjoy the comfortable micro climate during the crazy Tampa bay summer days.

Imagine walking into an enchanted forest in the middle of a city where parking is difficult to find. I probably made it unnecessarily personal with the parking part, but if you’ve been to downtown St Pete & vicinity you can relate. 😂 Not to worry, though, there is plenty of parking at Sunken Gardens! We went a few times as a part of our homeschooling program, and at others to just sit for a picnic or to feed the koi fish (with food the front desk staff will provide you.) You can spend 2-3 hours here if plants are of interest to you. There are also species of parrots or macaws, flamingos, and and and. Just go. It’s worth it.

Google
One of our favorite local gems, been going here since I was a young girl! Always look forward to going back, it’s a beautiful garden, with a relaxing and shaded path! Perfect for an afternoon stroll, a beautiful wedding garden and gift adorable shop on site!

Who knew lizards had it so good? The Sunken Gardens is basically a 4-star jungle resort for them—and I was just a lucky guest in their lush little paradise. Birds were singing, bees were buzzing like tiny drunk fairies, and the plants? Oh, thriving. From towering palms to Dr. Seuss-looking blooms, everything felt alive and a little bit magical. I half-expected a talking toucan to offer me a smoothie. Whether you're a nature nerd, a plant paparazzi, or just need a break from reality, this place will have you wide-eyed, smiling, and wondering if you should give up your job and become a full-time lizard. 10/10—bring water, good vibes, and a deep appreciation for chlorophyll.

What a magical experience! So transported into a Garden of Eden feeling, it seemed impossible we were in the middle of a busy town! Got lovely photos and my Muse inspired me to paint this piece from my heart.

Google
A Hidden Gem of Tranquility in St. Pete! The St. Pete Historical Sunken Gardens is a beautiful and peaceful escape, perfect for a leisurely stroll through nature. The grounds are stunning, featuring a fantastic collection of vibrant flowers, lush greenery, and charming pathways that make for a serene experience. While it’s not as large as the Naples Botanical Garden, it still offers a unique and intimate atmosphere that can be enjoyed in about 45-60 minutes. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the reasonable pricing makes it well worth the visit. Whether you’re looking for a romantic date spot or a relaxing outing with a loved one, this garden is a great choice for a quiet, scenic getaway in the heart of St. Pete!

Yelp
Sunken Gardens is a very beautiful attraction to come and visit in the St. Petersburg area. It's basically a sinking garden that has various tropical animals and a ton of exotic imported plants that don't grow naturally in Florida. It's a very relaxing walk through - most people take 1.5-2 hours to take everything in and walk through the entire garden. It's a good value too on Groupon I believe I got 2 tickets for $15 or so. They also have a small gift shop when you finish your tour of the gardens - indoor bathrooms as well. Overall - I'd recommend a visit if you want to see a unique, outdoor attraction.

Yelp
Yesterday my dad took me to sunken gardens in Saint Pete for the afternoon after our small Tampa trip. I have never felt so fully immersed in a garden before; they have about 23 different spots or stops on the map Dash and you definitely have to stop at each one. This small but large garden makes you feel fully immersed by surrounding yourself with different tropical plants and flowers. I definitely want to come back and bring my fiancé; they also have a tropical birds. They have one Amazon parrot, a whole bunch of flamingos, one cockatoo named Mindy that wanted to eat my hat, and four tropical parrots. Oh I snagged a Groupon so I was able to get admission for $18 which was pretty sweet. My dad and I spent about 2 1/2 hours here looking at all the different plant life and flowers. The lady who checked us in was super nice and very quick. This is one destination I will definitely add stop to it again. 10/10 Definitely recommend

Yelp
I actually grew up going to Sunken Gardens because just next door is Great Explorations children's museum. I recently took my 81 year old mother to Sunken Gardens. It had been a while since we've been. We still love going there! It is an oasis in the middle of busy St. Petersburg. If you want to escape to a tropical location, but don't want to fly to Hawaii, this is the perfect spot! You can take your time exploring the garden & some animals as well. I would highly recommend this spot for all members of the family. This would make a great place for a photoshoot, wedding photos, a date, or a birthday surprise for an elderly parent, like I did.

Kristin C.

Yelp
Sunken Gardens is beautiful and it's a nice spot if you are trying to beat the heat but still want to be outdoors. Most of the walkways are shaded because of the huge trees everywhere. You'll see some animals too, including flamingos, birds, tortoises, fish, and butterflies. I feel like the price is a little high but I used a Groupon deal and that was a good value.

Mike M.

Yelp
We went on the Flamingo weekend celebration. Arrived at about 1230, and took us almost exactly one hour to get through the line. Could have used some more assistance checking people in, as the process was extremely slow. Better prep for a weekend that I'm thinking they knew would be busier. The gardens themselves were really nice, and there was a musician playing which added great ambiance. The grounds were gorgeous, with so many different plants to view, along with several water features that added to the serenity.

Mel Z.

Yelp
It has been on my places to visit and finally made it! It was busy on a Saturday morning and since it was cold, we did not get to see the birds! There is plenty of parking and people go in and out constantly, so you will find a spot. We did not have to wait long to get our tickets and the entrance is right next to the check in. It is a small garden with plenty of plants, fountains, small history section, flamingos, birds (during cold weather they are not on display) and a small gift shop. They are sunken because you go from the street level down to the gardens. If I remember correctly, this was a sinkhole but don't take my word for it. A good visit to get a nature fix away from the city or the beach.

Kaira G.

Yelp
The ladies at the front are so nice especially with kids they 'put the kids in charge of the map.' They have cute shop, they have a variety of gifts to select from. Some of the items are a bit pricey, but the proceeds go to the garden to help fix it up and make it look beautiful. It is definitely worth going to, especially to get some fresh air and enjoy nature and its beauty. I highly recommend.

Jacob D.

Yelp
Purchased a groupon for something to do while visiting from out of town. Parking was crowded, so I thought it would also be crowded, but I think people were spread out all over. Was able to redeem the groupon with ease, and the employees were very efficient and friendly. Map is straight forward as it is numbered; however, it can be a bit confusing once you step foot on the grounds because you don't have to follow the numbers and can go in different directions (like a maze). The history of the grounds was interesting and you see some beautiful plants, trees, flowers, etc. Very good photo opps! If you are looking for something to do and like to take pics, this is your place.

Wish H.

Yelp
This place is amazing.. so many interesting plants and for this place being around for so long I have to say they do a great job keeping it up. Great place to visit and spend some quality time relaxing

Deanna F.

Yelp
Such fun for out of towners to come here and watch the large pink flamingo pond as well as the beautiful old plants. Started way back in the 1900s. This is a touristy spot with some exotic plants grown over. Taken my children here they've been enjoyed it over the years as well as all of the delightful birds. Senior discount, children's pricing cute gift shop a good way to spend an hour or so in the middle of St. Petersburg. Go through the small museum learn some fun facts of our birds and reptiles that you think you knew but now you know.

Steve S.

Yelp
My SO is a Master Gardner so we were very interested in stopping here. It's worth a visit! When you enter & pay you're given a map. The paved trails wind through the gardens and there are many signs posted informing the visitor about what you're seeing. Its trees are big to huge - old & mature. There is abundant undergrowth everywhere. Along with the plants, they had some turtles, loud macaws, parrot, Chilean flamingos, koi fish and a huge kingfisher to observe. There wasn't a lot of flowering plants but that may have been the time of year. It's worth some time to stop and visit.

Karina M.

Yelp
Leaving the year in nature! Decided to enjoy some nature and try something new before the year ends. I have lived in St. Petersburg for 2 years now and had never been to Sunken gardens before. So of course I chose this beautiful spot to cultivate new and accept negative ions from. I had bartered some tickets and had been holding on to them for this very moment! Of course, I had no idea until the moment came. I got them and put them away knowing that the most divine timing and intention would come to me and it did. As it always does. I suggest getting there before 2pm cause that's when it got pretty busy. Luckily you can see the whole garden fairly quickly, unless you're a wanderer like me and just like being In nature. Lots of history here and plenty of places to sit and take it all in. I suggest to anyone needing to find their center, experience something new and elevate their frequency. Change your perspective to love and everything turns into an adventure. 10/10 recommend

Han P.

Yelp
Loved visiting. A beautiful and quiet place to relax and observe the plants and wildlife.

Katie D.

Yelp
Astoundingly gorgeous botanical garden. I was here in late May and even though it was one of the hottest days of the year, it felt surprisingly cool because of all the trees' shade. $15 price point felt expensive until I actually went inside. It's a very well-manicured and clean garden, and you feel as if you've been transported to a Polynesian island. The gift shop is also soooo cute!

Darylynn D.

Yelp
This was on of the things I was so excited to do while in St. Petersburg. I went during the week during the day. It's best to bring water or something to drink with you while you're on the property. Also, if you're like me who gets bit by mosquitos, bring itch cream with you. There's plenty of free parking on the property. You pay for your entrance fee at the gift shop. They have a pamphlet to help guide you through the property. There are plenty of tropical plants, flamingos, tortoise, koi ponds, an open air lawn for weddings and a few photo ops. Since it is Florida, there are shaded areas to sit and take a break for a moment. Like all attractions, you end at the gift shop.

Darrick C.

Yelp
I ran across Sunken Gardens on Groupon. The tickets brought on Groupon saved $4 at the gate. The parking was limited, but it wasn't too much of a hassle to get a park spot. The front gate was friendly and helpful. I loved the different varieties at Sunken Gardens. Wild life, trees and plants was a great combination. It gives the vibe of visiting a miniature zoo. I highly recommend Sunken Gardens! Enjoy.

Kaitlin B.

Yelp
Beautiful pathways with even prettier views. Sunken Gardens is conveniently located close to downtown St. Pete while still providing a serene getaway. We purchased our tickets ahead of time with Groupon which cut the price from $30/pp to $18/pp. Beautiful option if you're looking for a peaceful place to enjoy nature!

Christopher D.

Yelp
This place is cool. Way better than I thought it was gonna be. About 3 hours of fun

Lisa T.

Yelp
How can you not fall in love with this St. Pete gem? It's a tropical wonderland full of bird song, meticulously maintained gardens, and very accessible paths for all ages and mobility. Wonderful place for a date, a picnic, time with family. Get a little baggie of koi food when you pick up your tickets! My toddler loves it here. They allow outside food and beverage so we like to pack a picnic and find a shady spot (there are so many) to enjoy dining al fresco together and then we wander the garden paths to admire the latest blooms. Their flamingos are such a joy, and the other birds and tortoises are fun too. Paquitaaaaaa! Their air conditioned and well curated gift shop always has something tempting -- great for birthdays and holidays.

Art J.

Yelp
Well this was my first time going here. Service was slow but luckily I am a national garden. It was a nice and unique. They had Alot of selection of exotic plants

Kymber S.

Yelp
We attended a wedding here that was so beautiful! I've been meaning to come back soon to explore the gardens with my children. Another St Pete gem for sure!

Lisa M.

Yelp
I have visited Sunken Gardens several times through the years when I travel to St Pete. This is a garden over 100 years old with an interesting history. On my recent trip I noticed they added a small history center and I was pleasantly surprised to learn more about this gem. It is well worth the cost and a peaceful way to spend a few hours. You will also find flamingos and other exotic birds. Staff are always friendly and we even noticed them walking around with the birds, interacting with guests and training the birds to do tricks.

Glenn M.

Yelp
It was a relaxing day viewing the Gardens and the History of the beautiful grounds. So glad this bit of old nostalgia and history has been maintained and well worth making sure you visit the beautiful gardens. The Flamingo's were a very popular stop and watching them is enjoyable. Enjoy turning off the texting and calls and stroll with the family enjoying a visit to days gone by.

Mel L.

Yelp
Ever in the mood to take a stroll through a natural dreamscape, laced with flowers, exotic birds and shaded by lush palms and bamboo? Look no further than Saint Pete's Sunken Gardens! This historical botanical garden is conveniently mapped out with intersecting walking trails leading to every nook and cranny. I recommend taking the time to gaze around you, up into the tree tops and down into the waters. The flock of flamingos, gigantic coy and stunning parrots are some of my favorite things to watch. Sunken Gardens offers free parking yet has an entry fee. They also do weddings inside the garden! The venue area is the sunniest portion of the place. Enjoyable for all of those mature enough and respectful enough to be serene during their visits.

Isabella C.

Yelp
A fabulous place to spend your free time at. One of the most peaceful and interesting botanical gardens I've ever been to.

Pat J.

Yelp
Cute, historical garden tucked away on busy 4th St in St Pete. What a nice, tranquil getaway from the surrounding modern day hubbub. We were able to get a Groupon for 2 and it save us a few bucks. Senior pricing for those 62+ saves $3 currently. Lots of interesting palm trees we don't see in the Orlando area. Koi were huge and well-fed. Don't miss the air-conditioned History Center. Allow about an hour.

Jenni Q.

Yelp
What a unique garden in downtown St Petersburg. I loved the variety of plants and flowers. I enjoyed the flamingos and Macaws as well. I can't wait to return.

Danielle S.

Yelp
I spent a week in the Tampa/St. Pete area and this was one of my favorite stops. What a lovely place! I could feel my shoulders relax the minute I entered the gardens. A must for nature lovers. You can even get married here. Stroll through the hundred year old botanical gardens at your own pace. Much of the garden has a flat path. Tropical plants and trees as well as parrots, fish, flamingos, and a kookaburra. A heavenly oasis for people like me who live in the Northeast where it snows in April. Adult admission is $15 and I spent about an hour and a half here. The only stressful part was finding a parking spot - I went on a Sunday and it was really busy. There is additional parking somewhere, luckily I didn't have to find it.

Theresa E.

Yelp
It's so hot outside prolly better to go when it is cooler outside. It has shaded areas but it's still so hot even in the shade. A wild array of plants and animals to see. You actually get to feed the koi here which was a nice touch.

Anastasiya S.

Yelp
Hidden gem in a beautiful city of St. Petersburg. We spent a lovely afternoon walking the gardens and admiring all the greenery in the middle of unusually cold for Florida day. Gardens are very well kept and the team that checked us in was extremely friendly.

Kala H.

Yelp
Beautiful gardens that are easily accessible from anywhere in St. Petersburg. Easy walking paths and friendly, helpful staff.

Irene E.

Yelp
Small and neat, free parking lot is pretty big. They converted the original entrance into a mini history exhibit. Among photos, is young Arnold Palmer. Two koi pounds filled with big kois. A couple of Chilean flamingos are constantly in talk or fight . A Hong Kong orchid tree is a rare sight for me. I lived there for a good few years, couldn't remember if I had seen it there because I wasn't into trees and flowers back then.

Claudia C.

Yelp
Florida has a handful of roadside attractions left and Sunken Gardens is one of the nicer ones I have been to. Very well maintained this former family owned land has a large variety of botanical specimens. There is a nice path for walking that is mostly covered so the sun isn't blasting on you and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. The history center gives a detailed overview of how this family owned farm became one of Florida's Roadside Attractions!

Hayli Z.

Yelp
Would definitely come back here. Very tranquil, lots of plants and loved seeing the flamingos and other birds. It was hot when I went but luckily there were a lot of shady spots to cool off. The only thing is that there wasn't a clear path to follow o.i feel like I probably missed some sections because there were multiple ways you could go so better signage on the way to follow would be nice.

Marija P.

Yelp
Such a beautiful place! I saw it on a list of the Top 10 Hidden Gems in the US and had to go! The gardens are set back so you feel like you've been transported to a tropical paradise and forget that downtown St Pete is right down the street. The animals (flamingos, birds, tortoises) were beautiful and it was just so peaceful with flowing water throughout. It's not very big so you won't need a ton of time there, but I know you'll enjoy it!

Deborah G.

Yelp
I have wanted to go for ever. It's very nice also reasonable 12 dollar senior price. The grounds are beautiful and cared for with a lot of love. Also it Looks like a nice place to have a wedding. Flamingos were gorgeous and koi pond spectacular.

Reigna O.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I went on a picnic date to the sunken gardens and I could not recommend anything more. Yes it was a very busy atmosphere, but there are places everywhere to stop, sit down, and rest, or to just enjoy a snack. We both had such a good time just walking around looking at all the pretty flowers. Ps. There's a butterfly garden, turtles, and there are different birds too!

James I.

Yelp
Sunken Gardens is a botanical attraction in St. Pete that has apparently existed for almost 100 years if I understand correctly. It features many trees/plants/shrubs from all parts of the world including Asia, Africa, the Caribbean. There are paved paths with signs all around. (We mistakenly took an elevator up to a another area near the start that was locked.) all the plants are labeled. There are multiple benches and seats throughout the grounds if you want to rest or take pictures. I was honestly surprised to learn there are a few animal exhibits. We saw the kookaburras, macaws, cockatoos, flamingos, and some koi in a pond. One of the employees working gave us some background on some of the pink bananas. I went with my parents and aunt and uncle. They all love plant life so they mostly enjoyed it. I am not an anthophile, but I appreciated all the varieties of flora. We took about 90 minutes to see everything. Admission is $15 for adults. For Seniors above 62, the fee is $12. It is a nice place to have a cheap date or take a parent or older relative. We saw lots of young families with kids too. It is a pretty family friendly place as others have said. Another great thing is there is free parking. We went on a summer weekday around 1030 am and were fine. You are allowed to bring bottled water or thermoses into the grounds as well. The bathroom area has a cool water dispenser. I didnt see any cafe/food kiosks on the grounds, but directly across the parking lot is a Panera Bread. There weren't any glaring negatives. Obviously, it is all outdoors so you are at the mercy of the elements. Summertime will alternate between hot and humid or heavy thunderstorms. Still, I had a nice time overall.

Caitlin M.

Yelp
What a beautiful spot! We are members at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens so got in free here, but it's worth the price of admission. Budget about an hour. Our kids absolutely loved it. Beautiful flowers and plants, a few animals including flamingoes and macaws. Also very shady to keep you cool in the hot florida sun. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
I had this on my list for to go places while I was in Florida. I'm glad I was able to go. This place is such a beauty. The nature is something else, its well taken care of place. its very relaxing, you just get to enjoy what's around you. I went in December and the weather was really beautiful. You can take up to 2-3 hours if you want to go through the path, take pictures and just enjoy being there. They have lots of species and they'll have a description and where they came from etc... Its a really well put together place. Its a must see place specially for the little ones. I highly recommend it for everyone.

Yelp
I wish I could them more stars. This attraction is very cool of you're into botanical gardens. The paths are easy to walk, there are macaws, flamingos, tortoise and koi ponds. Most of the trees are marked with the species and as you're under tree cover, you're not dying of the heat. We went late March so maybe August will be another story. There is a Cactus Garden and a butterfly garden. They were setting up for a wedding during our visit. I truly enjoyed this visit

Yelp
This garden is stunning, they have a wonderful display of flowers. I imagined they would have more water works because of the name but it was not the concept they were going for. Bring a book to read and some picnic blankets so you can relax and enjoy the smell of the flowers. They do have a parking lot but it's shared with other businesses so finding a spot can be tricky.

Yelp
This garden was so enchanting! I was really blown away by the biodiversity, and most of the labeled plant species were ones I had never even heard of before. While the birds were all being kept inside and away from the public to recover from the avian flu, it was still worth the visit. My friend and I were inspired to come after seeing a $16 Groupon for 2 adult admissions, which is quite a steal! They had a free private parking lot and bathrooms in the main lobby before the reception area that were convenient. I also walked through their gift shop multiple times because of how cute everything was. There was a wedding reception being held there while we visited, and I think their event space was integrated perfectly into the center of the gardens. It would be perfect for any large-scale event!

Yelp
Art inspired from new arrival #46 Flamingo. Beautiful gardens and home for many flamingos. Hidden wonder here in St. Petersburg. Lovely gardens and many surprises as you walk the trail...

Yelp
OUTSTANDING! That is my first impression. You don't expect it right away, being where it is in St Pete, but wow. A very blessed wow. To be able to sit among these plants, so well cared for, was a golden experience. It's a peaceful and humbling time. The palms are massive, towering. The old oak was so beautiful. I took hundreds of photos, and barely captured it all! The beauty of each little area and the pathways between was so great to take in. If I lived here, I'd be a member and come once a week :) there were areas to sit and have lunch, plenty of big greens for kids to play in, and the butterfly garden was the best place to sit! I'll be back every time I'm in St Pete!

Yelp
Great place to relax. Very affordable and accessible. The only thing that could make it more relaxing is to install hammocks.

Yelp
We visited the Sunken Gardens today. We are new to the area and the Sunken Gardens were one of the spots we wanted to see. I'd say if you have an hour and want to check out an amazing habitat then the Garden is something to see. The Garden has plenty of shade even in the hot July heat. That is definitely a plus when choosing outdoor activities when it's hot. There are also plenty of benches along the trails to stop and take in the beauty of the garden. My kids really enjoyed seeing the flamingos, parrots, Coi Fish and other birds. The trails only took us about 45 minutes of less to walk thru with stopping to enjoy the scenery. They did have part of the trail blocked off for construction. The one thing I'd love to see especially being next to the children's museum is maybe a children's garden- or sensory garden. It was a great afternoon in the garden and look foward to coming back.
