Great place! My husband and I were traveling for our anniversary. We've never been here before, but the owners were so nice it felt like we were staying with friends. (The owner actually sat around the campfire and chatted with the guests). Lake Superior access is across the road. The road wasn't busy when we were there so it was quick and easy to cross, and SO worth it! The beach was quiet and beautiful, and watching the sunset there over lake superior was amazing. Our queen room was quaint and comfortable with an old log cabin feel and an eagle theme. My only complaint would be that the bathroom in our room was kind of small, but at least it had a bathroom so I can't complain too much about that. :-) We will definitely be back with our kids to try out one of their cabins.

Google
Cannot say enough great things about this place. Our room was clean and comfortable. The property was well taken care of and inviting. The owners were caring and so welcome. You can just feel how much they love this place and take care of it amazingly! We absolutely recommend and will be back ourselves!

Google
The owners were so nice and provided us with anything we needed. Across the street is a fairy lighted path to Lake Superior helped us to find Yooperlights on the beach. Only 10 minutes to the porcupine mountains. Room was clean and the bed comfortable. We would stay here again!!

The stay was great. The hosts were very friendly and very helpful! Hotels.com made a mistake on putting in a low star rating. I would recommend this hotel to anyone

We absolutely love coming here! The cabins are decorated so nice and homey like. There just something special about the place! The owners are extremely friendly and make you feel so welcome! Quiet, friendly, clean cabins are equipped with a stove top, fridge, sink, utensils and cooking equipment. Lake Superior access across the road has amazing beaches. If you want a upnorth experience with a friendly atmosphere this is the place!!!

The Sunshine cabins and motel is conveniently located minutes from the downtown area and near the Porcupine Mountains. It is an average motel, reasonably priced. The outlets are old and definitely need replaced. The cords fall out. They need to be firmly pushed into the outlet. My husband uses a sleep apnea machine. The outlets are 2 prong. He needed a 3 prong. We had to run to the local hardware store to purchase several 3 prong adaptors for our electronics as well as an extension cord. The room was quaintly decorated in woodland fashion, which complimented the area. The Sunshine is a suitable stop for a quick stay.

Google
We had a “superior” experience at the Sunshine Motel! Our room was immaculate, as well as the manicured grounds. It’s obvious that this business is a labor of love by Nou and Rev. The motel has private access to Lake Superior, which is just a short walk away along a beautiful wooded path. (Don’t forget to look for the gnome village along the way.) In the evenings, we enjoyed a bonfire with other guests, as well as conversations our hosts regarding “not to miss” sights and activities. Our stay here harkened back to simpler times, miles away from the anonymous corporate hotels. We look forward to returning…and staying longer!

Google
Love this place. They allowed my black lab to stay. Beautiful private trail to head to the lake. Rooms are super clean. The owners are super nice. Roomy rooms and the price is awesome. Thanks for a great one night stay. Oh yes at night they have a camp fire for all to enjoy.

Yelp
Quiet, quaint & clean! The owners are attentive and take care of their little slice of heaven. If we ever end up back in this area, we will definitely book our stay here.

Yelp
Nice and clean. The gentleman checking me in was very friendly. We were in room 11 which had a blackbear theme that was really cute. Some nice touches include a book of local restaurant menu's in the cabin, beach access with a cute fairy light path, picnic tables with grills and a fire pit.

Yelp
I highly recommend this motel. My wife and I love motor lodges, and this is the nicest one we have ever stayed in. The proprietors are wonderful, friendly, helpful, everything you could want. The rooms are very nice and absolutely spotless. The location is excellent, right across from the beach.

Yelp
We've stayed here before, a year ago, and had a wonderful experience. Very friendly and helpful. This year was definitely a disappointment in comparison. Through circumstances beyond everyone's control our large family trip was moved and everyone relocated. There were several discrepancies in what we were initially told, the email receipt we received, and the website. We contacted them hoping we could at least get a partial refund, but several things on the website indicated we should have been able to get a full refund. They refused based on what we were initially told. I reviewed the receipt and sent screenshots of their website and they still refused even a partial refund. We considered just giving up our prepaid amount but couldn't afford the trip at all with my family if we did that. We ultimately stayed, so we could still spend some time with my family, but had to drive two hours every day to be where all of them relocated. My son checked the website and every page I took a screenshot and sent them showing the refund discrepancies had been changed. We were very disappointed. Obviously they recognized there were issues once we complained and changed everything. This looks like an admission that we were right and everything was confusing and not clearly advertised. We were very disappointed with this poor customer service. Any small compromise or attempt to work with us given their flawed advertising and how it was affecting our family trip would have gone a long way. The rooms were clean and had some obvious updates since our last visit. Their cleaning policies are pretty intense but at least they are very clear and leave no room for doubt. We were very cautious to leave everything clean to avoid additional fees. Weather happens and it has an impact, but most of the surrounding lodging offerings have a plan for that - partial refunds, etc. The rooms were clean. The man was polite when we checked in later in the evening. We will not ever give them our business again, unfortunately, because they could have helped us a little "at the owners' discretion" as their site says. They chose to argue the points on their site, then admitted their fault by immediately changing the points we addressed. Having worked in customer service industries for 25 years we know how this could have gone much better. My family has spent vacations in the area for the last five generations, over 50 years, and plan to continue the tradition. We would have been return customers often if we hadn't had such a frustrating experience. Unfortunately none of our expanding group will ever patronize them again. Given how our family trip changed, this ended up being the worst possible location.

Yelp
My partner and I planned to camp in the Porkies. Instead, it turned out that all backcountry camping was illegal due to COVID-19 precautions, and we had to find a place to stay, quickly. It had been a very long, emotionally trying day. The owners were supportive, friendly and helpful, and literally turned a horrible evening into a nice one for us. The room was clean, and charmingly decorated. The heater worked well (it was March when we visited). It was extremely affordable for a waterfront motel near a state park--much less money than anything in Houghton. The beach, across the street down a little nature trail, was a wonderful surprise, and we spent a lot of time there. They are welcoming of dogs, as well. This is, unquestionably, one of the best motel experiences I have ever had, with some of the friendliest staff I have ever met. This review doesn't feel like nearly enough to cover how grateful I am to them for saving the day, but I hope some of you reading this will choose to stay here!

Yelp
Sometimes, your backpacking trip doesn't go as planned- and you have to find a motel instead. So, you drive along the coast of Lake Superior and look for a place that you can turn in for the night and reset. Our party of six stumbled out of our vehicles and into the warm and inviting front office, where we met Kay and Bruce, the owners. They were so kind, open, and welcoming and went above and beyond to make our stay special and memorable. Both are like that aunt and uncle that you always miss and wish you could visit more. The rooms are perfect for weary travelers, and whether you stay one night or ten, you'll feel like you're at home and that Kay and Bruce are glad you're there. Bonus: there is a path that takes you on a short walk to a private beach on Superior.

Yelp
Hard pass. New management is having a tough time with their new business venture as motel owners. Felt unsafe. Had unprofessional staff/owners with surprise drama. No WiFi. Moldy smelling room obviously not prepared for guests. Very ineffective yet loud AC window unit. Not actually pet friendly. Save yourself the trouble and book with a pet friendly motel or hotel. Creepy and stressful, unless you like feeling that the property owners are always watching you and are in fact outside of your door whenever you exit and enter your room. No phones in the rooms. They do not answer their phone and do not return messages. They do show up at your door and demand to chat at all hours. Beware the "cottage" policy where they charge you the full price in advance but require you to cancel your reservation one month before arrival. The property owners also enter your room while you are away either because of the reason they made up and left on your voicemail or whatever different reason occurs to them later. No deadbolt on the door. Windows not secured. Did not feel safe leaving a laptop in the room. Would not have left anything of value in the room. Probably should not have slept in the room. Every interaction with the owners was them giving loud emotional disclaimers about why the WiFi did not work, the AC did not work, they did not want to rent rooms to pet owners. The owners run a racket where they noted that they frequently evict guests and charge guests fees for guests "being dishonest"; "hiding things from us"; and..."using the motel" ; and then book the rooms to people who show up without reservations. According to the new owners, they go into the room after you check in and every day, looking for issues and then evict you without a refund and while also charging you fees. They immediately put new guests in those rooms. Website and the motel sign advertises they are pet friendly but then they greet you at check in with a litany of things that could go wrong with a pet in a motel room. They gave us speeches every day about wild dramatic issues that may arise with a pet in a motel room where the only upside would be that they would replace the appearing to be 40-year old carpet. All of this was after they announced that they were reserving the right to charge us "whatever it costs..." to remedy all of their imagined and predicted damage to the ratty furniture, the ancient moldy carpeting, the hideous 1970s era bedding. They make you sign several policies at check in that were not disclosed at booking nor in subsequent auto-generated emails. My favorite part was when the owner told us with a straight face that he had to walk the property at night to make sure that no one had been eaten by a bear. Maybe a bear will eat the owner and relive him of the misery of owning a motel.

Yelp
We stayed four nights and rented the moose lodge. My dad and some of our friends had rented several of their hotel rooms for a wedding we attended in the porkies. Everything from the moose lodge, to the standard rooms were VERY CLEAN. The owners are some of the kindest people we met while staying in the upper peninsula. The owners were very helpful, courteous and made our stay very smoothly. I recommend the moose lodge if your wanting more room for your family. It has two bedrooms, one bath And a full kitchen and living room area. Also has a futon. In one of the rooms they have a full bed and bunk beds. The other room has a queen/full bed.But keep in mind if your staying in a hot month( June/July) that their is only one window air conditioner for the moose lodge. You may want to pack extra box fans. Their is no pool, however their is lake access!! It's a short walk across the highway to the trail through the woods( it's very well maintained and lighted) the beach area has ALOT of drift wood and was a bit overwhelming. But overall I would stay their again. THEY ALSO HAD THE BEST PRICES IN TOWN PET FRIENDLY!!!!

Yelp
This is a filthy, outdated, run down shoddy motel. The owners are horrible people. The room smelled strongly of mold and mildew. The bathroom floor was rotted out. There is a board under the carpet outside the bathroom door that is a tripping hazard. The plugs are a fire hazard and any plug in items just fall out. There was broken furniture in our room, which they tried to hide by throwing a blanket over the back of the chair and putting a throw pillow on the back. It collapsed when my husband sat in it, and he slammed his head against the wall, hurting his back and neck. The owners then tried to charge us for "damages, saying they would be charging our credit card to replace both chairs in the room, since they were as a "set". I would guess they were from the 50's. I locked my credit card to stop the charges. The owner then became absolutely livid and I was afraid for my safety. He continued to harass and intimidate me for money. When we refused, he accused us of smoking in the room. He called the Sheriff and kicked us out. I insisted that the Sheriff inspect the room. He stated that he could not smell smoke. He stayed with us to make sure our departure was safe. I am a Senior citizen. These owners tried to intimidate and extort money. I gave an honest review on trip advisor, describing my experience. They accused us of using drugs and drinking in the room. They did enter our room while we were away, as another reviewer reported. We found they had gone through our things. The owner behaved very aggressively towards us, I felt very unsafe. We did find that they were outside our room at all hours, which was very creepy. Also, I found it odd that the owner kept insisting that he did not have cameras in the rooms. Steer clear of this place, it's a Bates Motel. The owners are just horrible people. This is a remote area, not a lot of options, but keep going. I'd sleep in my car before staying here.

Yelp
Perfect long weekend. Owners are wonderful and so nice. Great little place! We'll be coming back

Yelp
For those of you who read my reviews, you know I only give 5 stars or 1 star - there being no other reason to review unless it is fantastic or total crap. In the case of the Sunshine Motel, this is a true little gem. Not because of the rooms themselves but solely due to the new owners Anthony and Nu, who are generous, blessed folks who greet all with warm smiles and friendly chats. They will exceed your expectations. We were camping out on their property, and they bent over backwards to provide the experience that my 3 young children craved: daily swims in Lake Superior, nights on the little sand beach hunting glowing rocks with black light, campfires and amazing stars in the sky! Anthony and Nu purchased the motel a little over a year ago and run the place all themselves, so disregard all reviews prior to the summer of 2019. If it's friendly atmosphere and true UP experience next to the Porcupine Mountains you seek, this is your place.

Autumn B.

Yelp
I seriously have never written a review in my life but this place deserves it! Such a beautiful gem with so much to offer and is the perfect place to stay whether its for a night or a week. The owners Nu and Anthony were so inviting and genuine it made the stay at Sunshine an experience my friend and I will never forget. Very clean rooms, affordable prices, nightly bonfire with s'mores, beach access with a beautiful view of the porcupine mountains, and a truly unique and genuine experience! We will hopefully be back soon

Yelp
We spent a bitterly cold weekend skiing at The Porkies. Bitterly cold as in -5 with windchills in the -25 range. However, our room at Sunshine Motel was toasty and cozy and we were able to cook some wonderful meals! And the warm reception and caring by Anthony and Nou (the owners) made our stay even more memorable.

Yelp
I stayed here twice last year with my mother and dog en route to the Keweenaw Peninsula, and had great experiences both times. In addition to the property's proximity to Lake Superior, the Porkies, a nice small town, and many beautiful waterfalls, the Motel itself is welcoming and comfortable with both housekeeping cottages and motel rooms available. We stayed in a pair of "adjoining rooms" which was an ideal setup for us with privacy available and a shared kitchen with dining table in one of the rooms. The grounds are charming and nice to walk around, and the Sunshine has its own lakefront accessible across the street and down a short wooded path. The owners, Bruce and Kay, were helpful and fun to get to know, and their dogs were adorable. This is one of the most pet-friendly places I have ever stayed at, but I think travelers without pets would feel equally at home. Customer service was above and beyond. On each visit I unintentionally left something behind; in June, it was some local jam which Kay saved for me and returned during our October visit (I hadn't even missed it!), and in October, it was my dog's squeaky ball that she mailed back with a bonus treat for my dog for having to put up with such a forgetful owner. I'm looking forward to our next visit!

Yelp
Beautiful area with private beach access. The owners were very welcoming and easy to talk to. Planned to stay one night at their rustic campsite, but ended up staying 2 nights because we loved the site. The campsites are tucked away from the actual motel/cabins so there was a lot of privacy. They also have community fires sometimes where everyone can sit around and hang out :)

Yelp
Excellent price, friendly owners, and the rooms have the amenities of a $100 a nice place. Nice bonus: campfires and free s'mores in the evening!

Yelp
Absolutely perfect, simple motel. My husband and I stayed here one night on our UP road trip and it was exactly what we were looking for. Sunshine is modest but has plenty of nice touches like private beach access to watch the sunset, outdoor seating, and a groomed lawn with a fire pit. The rooms are very clean, with a mini fridge, microwave, coffee pot and flat screen TV. The decor style is definitely "north woods" but well done and neat. It's a perfect road trip stop.

Kim P.

Yelp
We loved it here! The rooms were great And right across the street from Lake superior! With a really cute little path taking you there. The owners were very helpful. We enjoyed the large yard area with the fire pit and tables and chairs and even a porch swing. Would definitely stay here again!

Yelp
What a wonderful place to stay! Our room was so cute and clean and the property was very well maintained. Our hosts Bruce and Kay are really great people. They not only provided us with the perfect room, they also took the time to tell us about all the awesome things to see around the area and yummy places to eat. We had such restful nights in a peaceful and laid back area. The motel sits in a wooded area, but has great access to the beach and main road, so getting around the area was very easy. I would recommend this motel to anyone and for any season, as they are very accommodating for many activities from hiking, hunting, snowmobiling or just getting away from it all.

Carolynn L.

Yelp
Would love to stay here again, if I'm ever in the area again. Adorable room- very clean and comfortable. Kind and helpful hosts (who accommodated my late arrival with no problem). Beach access. Affordable. The whole experience is a wonderful memory, and I highly recommend Sunshine Motel.

Yelp
Nice simple cabin in the UP near the Porcupine Mountain State Park. Perfect location for day trips to local waterfalls and hiking. This was a great place to unplug and enjoy the surroundings. Owners are friendly and ready with helpful information on the area. For the price and convenience, I would certainly stay here again.
