I am very wary of Mexican restaurants outside México, since I've had so many dreadful experiences with horrible food labelled as "Mexican". My general rule is: if a restaurant has neon signs, cacti, sombreros, skulls, and a stereotypical name including words such as "tequila", "amigo", "fiesta", "loco", "señor" or "latino", that is definitely a place to avoid. So, anyone could understand why I was reluctant to visit a place called "Super Loco".
Reading the menu quickly dispelled my fears: no burritos, no nachos, no chimichangas, no fajitas, no chilli con carne, no "taco meat" (whatever that is). Instead, they have proper corn flour tortillas and also several welcome surprises with ingredients such as axiote, huitlacoche and pibil pulled pork. There is fairly good variety of tequila and mezcal, some very good brands included, and even explain the difference between tequila and mezcal.
When it came to taste, Super Loco delivered. I had a huitlacoche quesadilla, with more mushrooms than huitlacoche but was still good. I also tried a red snapper taco which had a very nice touch of axiote, and a very nice mango ceviche. I was glad to have some of those nearly tasteless but fresh Mexican beers we like so much, rather overpriced. The only thing I did not like was the habanero sauce since it was, in fact, mayonnaise and that ruined the habanero taste. Overall, it was a good meal. It was also overpriced, though.
The obvious question is if the place is "truly" Mexican, whatever that means. I could tell the owners are not Mexican, some slight misspellings on the menu gave them away. However, it is clear they have done their homework properly. The menu states they travelled to Mexico City and the Pacific Coast to do research on street food, and that explains Super Loco's good taste. It is a very good take on Mexican street food. It's true, maybe it's not exactly as it is in México (purists sure will say that), but it has the proper essence. The fact that they don't stick lime wedges on your beer makes them more Mexican than many other joints I've visited elsewhere.
