A Tour of the World's Most Delightful Domes

"At 536 ft. across, The Superior Dome has the largest diameter of any wooden dome in the world. The dome is an integral part of Northern Michigan University’s sports complex. The flexible space, with a retractable artificial turf, can be reconfigured for football, volleyball, hockey, tennis, track and field, or a number of other sports.  Structurally, it is a geodesic dome – this means that it is a self-bracing framework of triangles. A main feature of a geodesic dome is that the dome is built from a minimum of structural elements (in this case, 781 massive Douglas fir beams) to achieve the great strength of a dome. Although some of the decking is covered by acoustic panels, nearly every part of the wooden structure is visible, and it’s striking and lovely to look at.  When no events are on the schedule, dome visitors are free to go pretty much wherever they please – you can run around like a maniac on the artificial turf or climb the bleachers to get a closer look at the ceiling.  Locals often use the space for walking laps (many of them use the circular exterior hallway as well). When required, the building can hold as many as 16,000 people.  In addition to the massive central space, the dome houses various exhibits, training facilities and offices, including those of the United States Olympic Education Center." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The Super Dome is an amazing space. Attended for NMU Graduation. Bathrooms were plentiful and the parking was good. Just amazed by the wooden structure and cat walks!

It's pretty cool to check out this extra large wooden structure. And it's free to enter

The largest wooden dome in the world! This is Superior Dome, home of the Northern Michigan Wildcats! The outside of the dome is very reminiscent of the Six Flags AutoWorld dome used in Flint, MI in the late 1980s and early 90s. An awesome venue that is extremely unique in name and build. If you're ever in Michigan's Upper Peninsula around football season this is a stadium you must experience yourself!

Cool place. Amazing building. A lot of people walk there. We talked to quite a few people. Everyone was very friendly. I would love to see a football game there sometime. Also very close to the Lake Superior.

A must see in Marquette. It is usually open to walk around and look at all the old sports memorabilia, awards, etc. The Wildcats might be practicing too that you can watch. A totally wooden dome that is amazing.

I visited Superior Dome to watch an NMU football game. The location is impressive! It's supposed to be the largest wooden dome in the world, and it's a sight to behold. It was well laid out and comfortable, and parking was easy. For such a large place, the temperature was perfect. I'm looking forward to seeing more events here!

Yelp
Located on the campus of Northern Michigan University in Marquette, I did not have the opportunity to tour the inside but I did have time to walk the perimeter of this extremely interesting building that is unlike anything I've seen before. It is a geodesic dome that is 143 feet tall and has a diameter of 563 feet. Surprisingly, it is only the fifth largest dome in the world though it is the largest *wooden* dome. Some facts about the dome: - it has a retractable artificial turf carpet. - the first event here was in 1991, when the Wildcats defeated Indianapolis - the attendance record is 8672 - George W. Bush held a campaign rally here during the 2004 Presidential campaign. - the dome is visible from Lake Superior [Review 17917 overall - 323 in Michigan - 1438 of 2022.]

Yelp
We've been here a few times, even before moving up here. The first visit was the best, as there was no event and we could take it all in at our own pace. It was great to see all of the plaques commemorating the Wildcat athletes, especially the ones I had met as a student. Since then we've visited for a craft show and the homebuilder's show. The facility is perfect for these events and, even though one of my favorites pubs was displaced by its construction (sure miss ya, Whiskers!), the location of the Superior Dome cannot be beat.

Yelp
Not a bathroom I would want to die in! Could stand to upgrade their toilet paper supplier
