"Supernormal Melbourne Every discerning visitor to Melbourne goes straight to Cumulus Inc, another Andrew McConnell restaurant. The chef has become one of the leaders in the Melbourne food scene, and a booking at one of his restaurants is an insurance that great food is about to go down. The relatively new Supernormal does some of the best food in town. Order the New England lobster roll, a hot buttered brioche with a couple of thick slabs of cold poached crayfish, Kewpie mayonnaise and watercress ($15). The raw bar is inventive, fresh, delicious. Cubes of raw tuna topped with a puréed dot of avocado, a twig of fried saltbush and the greenest possible kombu dressing is a must try. The white cut chicken, with silken noodles and a sesame dressing, wombok and chilli oil, is a masterstroke. The dish is so tender, so elegant, creamy, crunchy and fresh, I could come in for a plate of it every day. This Asian twist is McConnell at his most wonderful. The pan-Asian menu draws on the chef's years spent working in Shanghai and Hong Kong , where he was exposed to a broad range of food in people’s homes, on the streets and in restaurants. It’s a large concrete box of space with a neutral fit out; pale wood paneling, white booths, a long zinc bar and a basement that includes a karaoke room, less tacky than its counterparts elsewhere. Sydneysiders wish McConnell would deliver interstate."

20 Best Restaurants in Melbourne | Condé Nast Traveler

"This perennially packed, decidedly casual spot in the CBD from Melbourne titan Andrew McConnell perfectly sums up the area: The menu mashes together half a dozen Asian cuisines, the crowd is heavy on well-dressed international students, and the service is delivered at lightning speed. The raw bar is usually the star here—seafood like oysters and kingfish are always A-grade and prepared with deference to Japan. Don't overlook the meaty mains, including the exemplary char-grilled Wagyu strip-loin, which is served with green pepper, spinach, and caterpillar mushrooms." - Dan F. Stapleton

The rice cake & octopus is a best combination. Best pair to try. We did order pork chop, grill scallops and oysters too. The grill scallops seem a bit outstanding compared to the other two. Both food and drink are so good. 10/10 The atmosphere is good for dating or having a cozy anniversary then. Love

Google
Fab service, all meals were delivered and explained by the chefs, fun ambience, and fantastic food. Food timings were spaced out well, giving us ample time to digest and dig into the next dish! We ordered the korean rice cakes, scallops in kelp butter, lobster roll, potsticker dumplings, duck bao, whole flounder, peanut butter salted caramel dessert and two cocktails. Korean rice cakes - I love Korean cuisine and I can say this is one of the best I've had. The glaze gave it such a good crunch and the spice was just right. Scallops - full of flavour, loved them. Lobster roll - like everyone says, you have to order this one! 10/10. Potsticker dumplings - pork and chives flavour, they were okay, can get better ones at a cheaper price point elsewhere. Duck bao - my fave dish of the night along with the lobster roll, sauce was great, skin was soooo crispy, loved it! 10/10 too. Whole flounder - very tender and juicy, easy to de-bone, sauce was delicious. Peanut butter salted caramel dessert - if you love snickers, you'll definitely love this!

We had an incredible dining experience at this Asian fusion gem! From the moment we walked in, the service was exceptional — especially from our waitress, Laura, who took amazing care of us throughout the evening. She was attentive, friendly, and somehow always appeared at just the right time to top up our water without us even needing to ask. It's rare to feel so well looked after. We opted for Banquet 1 and were impressed with how accommodating the team was — we requested to swap out the mushroom dishes for beef or chicken, and the chef made the change with no fuss at all The meal started with vibrant Szechuan pickled vegetables and Korean rice cakes that had the perfect balance of sweetness and spice. The nori cracker with seared tuna and bonito was a standout — fresh, delicate, and packed with umami. The prawn & chicken dumplings were juicy and full of flavor, complemented beautifully by the chilli and vinegar dip. The crispy skin soy chicken was perfectly cooked with bold, punchy fermented chilli and black vinegar. These dishes were accompanied by perfectly cooked Japanese short grain rice and a refreshing cold braised spinach with mustard oil, adding a fresh, slightly peppery contrast to the bold mains. One of our absolute favorite dishes of the night was the Szechuan white cut chicken with shredded potato, sesame, and spinach — tender, flavorful, and unforgettable. There was a bit of a wait for the main dishes (around 45 minutes), but the team acknowledged it and generously offered a complimentary blueberry cheesecake to make up for it — a thoughtful gesture that didn’t go unnoticed. To finish, the peanut butter parfait with salted caramel and soft chocolate was heavenly — rich, smooth, and the perfect ending to a well-balanced and exciting meal. Highly recommend for anyone who loves creative, beautifully executed Asian fusion. And if you get Laura as your server, you’re in for an extra treat!

Google
Outstanding food, service and ambiance. The whole flounder, slow cooked lamb shoulder and scallops are must orders. This place is the perfect spot for a girl’s night out or date night. Always vibin’, MUST make a booking or be prepared to wait by the bar (they’ll keep the drinks flowing, don’t worry!).

I have dined at super normal too many times to count and they never disappoint! This place is first on my list of places to eat every time I'm in Melbourne. THE FOOD! What can I say about the food? It will blow your mind! The food is scrumptious, delectable, mouth-watering, delightful....there are no words. Those lobster rolls!!! Out of this world. Don't skip dessert - so good!

Google
Supernormal is a truly standout restaurant. The service was top notch, with friendly and knowledgeable staff (I was impressed the waiter could provide so much detail on a drink I asked about). The sweet potato shochu highball was amazing. The food was next level, I 100% recommend the scallops and the lobster roll.

Google
We had a nice spontaneous walk-in dinner here at Supernormal. The staff were all very friendly and appears to enjoy working there. Loved getting variety of different small dishes and sharing together. Can be a romantic destination if you choose it to be :) $180 for two people made us full, which included a cocktail and dessert each. Only concern is the front door is very heavy to open 😂 good for security, nobody will be running out without paying their bill.

Asian fusion — what can I say... the service? Exemplary. The food? Amazing. The atmosphere? Fantastic. If I could afford to come every day, I’d be broke... but at least I’d be deliciously bankrupt.

Yelp
Just the best. Great food, flexible with serving sizes (I was a party of one), top service, lovely buzz but not too loud. Visiting Melbourne for a weekend and I came twice!

Yelp
Supernormal was so super, we dined there twice while in Melbourne. Offering a creative lineup of fresh Australian seafood, sushi style raw bar, Korean inspired small plates, dumplings, potstickers & Bao...it's the perfect Asian fusion menu. It's fun & hip. The space is open & contemporary. The long bar opening to the kitchen & cocktail area is exciting for people watching & observing all the action . The service is friendly & attentive. The cocktails, wine, beer & sake selections are vast & everything we tried was top notch. Here is what we tried: Prawn & Chicken Dumplings Potstickers Selection of seafood on ice Lobster roll Royal red Prawns Chilled mussels Bubbles, Sake & the house martini Everything was heavenly & ultra fresh! In addition to ordering ala carte you can also order a banquet menu. There is usually a short wait but trust me... wait , your tastebuds will be rewarded!

Yelp
The service and food was outstanding. And thank you so much for the champagne glasses for our anniversary. Have already recommended you to friends who will be in town for the F-1 races.

Yelp
Supernormal? More like Supergood! I went here, luggage still in hand, upon my friend's recommendation. Right away, I was ushered to a window spot and had my luggage whisked away to the wine cellar next to me. I was introduced to the menu, with my host helpfully providing several recommendations, including the Banquet (A$85) which I ended up splurging on. It was one of those treat yourself moments, and boy, was the entire banquet an Asian fusion treat! NORI CRACKER WITH SEARED TUNA: The tuna was sublime and nicely marinated on top of a crisp cracker. In hindsight, my cracker should have been black (based on other photos), but it was still the perfect one-biter! SZECHUAN PICKLED VEGETABLES: This was your standard pickled cucumbers, with some crunch and a kick from the Szechuan peppers. HERITAGE TOMATOES WITH SMOKED YOGURT AND BLACK BASIL: What a creative twist with the smoked yogurt - it almost had the mouthfeel of ricotta. The tomatoes were ripe yet firm and paired well with the acidity of the vinegar. PRAWN AND CHICKEN DUMPLINGS: These plump pockets of joy were juicy and thinly wrapped, with some heat from the sauce. The chicken has a stronger flavour than the prawn, but it's still delicately balanced. MARINATED CLAMS WITH DAIKON: With the Shaoxing wine, it was like I was eating drunken chicken but in clam form. The julienned daikons were nicely pickled, and I'm happy to report that there were clams in all four shells! SLOW-COOKED LAMB SHOULDER WITH EGGPLANT, SHREDDED CABBAGE, AND RICE: This was the main course and did its job of filling me up after the small plates. The lamb, which fell off easily, and the eggplant both absorbed the rich sauce like a sponge, and tasted delightful with the shredded cabbage and rice.  PEANUT BUTTER PARFAIT WITH SALTED CARAMEL AND SOFT CHOCOLATE: Although there was too much caramel for my liking, the dessert was very fragrant with the peanuts and had a nice consistency. I do think a subdued version, perhaps with more Asian influence, would have been a better choice. Bonus points for a chilled plate though!  Yes, A$85 is a lot for a meal, but Supernormal gave me an experience to remember. I was blown away by each course, impressed by the service, and left as a extremely satisfied patron. It was one of the best meals that I had in Melbourne!

Yelp
Came here on a date night and walked in without a reservation! Got lucky and sat at the chefs table. Views of the fast paced kitchen were cool. Food was high quality and reasonably priced: fish, lobster roll, Wagyu were the highlights. We're too full and had to cancel our chicken dish!

J M.

Yelp
Meringue citrus dessert was very good, as was the pork dumplings that weren't on the menu. The crunchy thing on top was a great addition. But they kept forgetting what we ordered and that was a bit annoying. Also there is no single duck bao option and that's annoying too.

Yelp
Have eaten at Supernormal about four different times over as many years. While I have enjoyed the food, especially the famous lobster roll (yes, it is delicious), I have seen a steep decline in the overall service and attention to detail in the preparations since the pandemic. This is just a note to say that while there are some inventive, fun things on this menu, it may be time to step up the service and ensure that the food preparation is on point. It's a beautiful space, great concept, and when the dishes are prepared as they should be it is something special. Unfortunately, there is stiff competition in the very hot Melbourne dining scene and I am not sure I will be back with so many other compelling options in the immediate area.

Yelp
The third time I have been here. Amazing as usual. Food, service, the personal attention provided by the staff. 5-stars.

Yelp
My second time in Melbourne and my second time here. It is a must. Fun, relaxed and on point. I specifically want to call out the host Cameron who managed to fit us in on a totally booked night. He made us welcome, he made it work, he knows exactly what he is doing. Food is obviously stunning, but truly good service makes the food taste great, not just good.

Yelp
Food was all too spicy. I enjoy spicy food, but my lips were burning still 15 minutes after departing. But service was terrible. Ok we looked and are tourists. But first no-one came over to take our order. Next when we finished, had to TRY TO waive a waiter down to pay, by they stared past us . I had to go over to ask them to let us pay. And no apologies. This was 430pm, so not crowded.

Yelp
Keen to hang out and see what happens and have a bit of fun see where the night ends up I would love to take you out

Yelp
Every dish here was a winner! We stumbled upon this place as we were walking along looking for a place to eat and were fortunate enough to get a table without waiting, but likely because we were there very early. Highly recommend this Japanese fusion restaurant and will be back for another meal

Yelp
Good food. Definitely overhyped though. It's great food, good drinks and atmosphere but nothing out of the ordinary for Melbourne now which has so many great eateries!

Troy W.

Yelp
The staff were amazingly attentive. Food was delicious and as this is not our usual choice of restaurant we're so glad we tried it out as it was an all round fantastic dining experience.

Yelp
If you order right, can be a really great meal. Loved the sesame bread with avocado dip and the lamb shoulder with eggplant, which was served in a spicy Szechuan-esque sauce. The fried custard with ginger sauce was delicious but one piece is all you need so better to share an order with a few people. Snack of Szechuan pickles was very average, as was the scallop on Nori cracker.

Don M.

Yelp
Great buzz to this restaurant with lobster roll on my " last supper" list.High ratio of kitchen & floor staff to customers ensures exemplary service

Yelp
Love this spot in Melbourne. We sat toward the end the bar which is much quieter and really liked the place. I think the lighting is actually better along the bar vs. the main dining room. This place runs like a machine. Everything is well organized. Multiple dishes made with the same ingredients by the same person with care and veracity. The presentation of the dishes and curation of the ingredients are fantastic. MUST GET: Soy based tuna with avocado - we saw the next table getting this and looked amazing and had to order it ourselves. The proportion is just right. The tuna is perfectly season (not too salty) with the crunchy radish and soft avocado. The lovage sauce with ginger is out of this world. Phenomenal dish. Peanut butter parfait with chocolate soft served ice cream and salted caramel - I am suspicious of any dessert that had caramel given that it's usually too sweet 95% of the time. This one was perfect. The peanut butter parfait was moist and structured in texture but not too soft. The caramel blends in incredibly well. And the chocolate ice cream was perfectly perched and added another layer of complexity to the flavor. SOLID: Mustard greens - love the greens in this dish. Mustard greens, radicchio, and wakame - earthy greens with a tad of bitterness (which I loved). The seasoning could be a bit more massaged into the greens for this one. The top part of the salad was under seasoned. Oysters - we ordered the Sydney rock oysters. Fresh. But one could probably order these in any top restaurants. Szhechuan chicken salad with sesame and chili oil - pretty good but not inventive. Solid flavors of Szechuan cuisine. SKIP: Szechuan pickled vegetables. Just a normal dish. Nothing spectacular. Vegetable dumplings - liked the presentation and texture. The flavor is a bit bland - can use a splash of chili oil on this one. I also liked the herb perched on top of the dumplings.

Yelp
Not impressed. I expected a lot more from this place despite the high reviews from mutual helpers but visiting Melbourne, I was encouraged to try Supernormal for their asian fusion menu. Here's why I'm not impressed: Bar seating was quick but food took a while to come out. We ordered the Noodle Salad, Chicken and Shrimp Dumplings, Duck Bao and a side of Gai Lan. The noodle salad came out first and we finished that. After waiting 20 minutes for the next entree to come out the waiter asked me if I was thinking about dessert - wait what? What about the 3 other things that I just ordered? It seems as if they entirely forgotten the other items and we had to wait another 15 minutes for the next 3 items to come out. The Noodle Salad was more on the salty side, the duck skin for the Duck Bao was extremely salty and even the Gai Lan (which should be more stems than leaves by the way, considering that's the expensive part of this overall cheap veggie) was salty. I think this restaurant over did it with the salt. Lastly, the prices were not worth the performance of the dishes and the service. It definitely made me feel more on the "hey this is overpriced" side. Wouldn't return as we can easily get better Chinese food in Chinatown. Positives: Aesop in the bathroom, nice ambience, great wine selection.

Yelp
Really great atmosphere and ambiance. However, I felt that the servicing sizes were a tad small. Would go again!

Yelp
Melbourne is the place for Asian fusion dining and Supernormal did not disappoint. Had the set menu for one. Waitress was flexible to substitute Kingfish for clams. Sometimes these testing menus are hit/miss, but I enjoyed every course

Yelp
Hmm. I was pretty disappointed in Supernormal and I think it had way more to do with the experience and the cost of everything than the taste of the food itself. The main thing -- the ridiculous wait time. We arrived at 7pm on a Saturday night and were told in no uncertain terms we'd be seated after 9:15pm at the earliest. So a two hour and fifteen minute wait. That's ludicrous, even for a Saturday night in the CBD. Supernormal is a popular, trending Melbourne restaurant, and people in Melbourne jump on the "trendy" bandwagon like no other Australian city. Which means long queues at trendy restaurants that don't take bookings, and restaurant managers/workers who don't give a crap if that annoys you because they're smugly confident someone else will be willing to take your place. So you sigh and suck it up and wait the 2+ hours on an uncomfortable chair with people constantly bumping into you as they walk past and you sip on an overpriced wine or beer, trying desperately to make it last the full wait time so you don't get wasted on alcohol on an empty stomach before you're even seated. Australians, don't put up with it!! If we all voiced our objections to the ludicrous "no bookings for small groups" policy at popular restaurants and voted with our feet out the door, we'd all have a much nicer dining scene in Melbourne. Restaurants can give up the reserved table if you don't turn up within 5 minutes and turnover will still be high and they'll still make their money. I dunno, I just feel like Australians are willing to put up with a lot of poor customer service that people in other countries aren't. The food here is not amazing enough to put up with a 2+ hour wait due to a no bookings policy. So yeah, rant over, that was my main gripe. Also, the place was loud and didn't feel "special" -- for the price we paid and the special occasion (it was a friend's birthday), the atmosphere was too crowded, cramped, dark, and noisy. Service was also poor. We had two different waiters due to a shift change halfway through our meal, and there was a lot of confusion about what we ordered. THREE TIMES, the wrong food was brought to our table. Three times! For the amount we paid per head ($80+), it's pretty inexcusable for these kinds of mistakes to keep happening. I wouldn't care so much except that it's a waste of food when you start touching the dish assuming it's yours and then it can't be served to the other table. On to the food. We were a group of four and ordered a bunch of stuff to share, which is par for the course here. Two of us are vegan and one vegetarian-leaning and one meat-eating, so we got a mix of things. Supernormal is vegan-friendly and the waiter knew right off the bat what we could and couldn't eat, which was awesome. We got: - Purple sprouting broccoli, smoked potato, miso and furikake (mostly because we enjoyed saying "furikake") - Vegetable dumplings (2 servings, 12 pieces) - New England lobster rolls (1 for the meat-eater, 3 with tofu for the rest of us) - Some fish thing for the meat-eater, some tofu thing for us - Sauteed greens in a black bean sauce - Steamed rice - House sake The flavours were pretty awesome, except for the vegetable dumplings, which were bland a.f. I could've ordered some veggie dumplings anywhere in Chinatown for a fraction of the cost and they would've tasted better. The "lobster rolls" (ours were identical to the meat-eater's, just with marinated tofu on the inside) were heavenly. This is Supernormal's signature dish and even if you're not a tofu fan, don't worry -- this is amazingly delicious. If I went back I would probably just order like 4 of these and some rice and call it a day, lol. Really really good. The purple sprouting broccoli and potato was nice, and the greens were OK. The sake was nice and went down nice and smooth. All in all, the food was nice and the flavours were definitely "gourmand," but I would never go back again and pay $80+ per head for what I ate, ESPECIALLY given the almost 2.5-hour wait and the crappy service and the food screw-ups three times.

Yelp
Some of the best Asian food I've ever experienced in my life! Super trendy, contemporary & neon styled restaurant with dim lighting during dinner service. We were brought complimentary roasted pumpkin seeds for snacking before the meal. Items were brought out tapas style with raw bar specials and extensive wine list. They constantly change up the menu so you're sure to grab plenty of items while they last!! Entire menu was created to be shareable between 2 or more people. This bowl included snails, clams, kingfish & lobster with their asian inspired mignonette and it didn't disappoint!

Yelp
"I make wine disappear. What's your super power?" If you love wine you have to try a wine bar in Australia! 20 by the glass backed by 250 selections by the bottle, half Australian, the rest old world. Wine snobs covered but the real fun is in discover. Australian gin and whisky. Sake, shochu, and libations from around the world. Jovial atmosphere but far from hipster. This isn't NoCal "chic". Oh and they also serve food. In general, the food is Australian Asian in a contemporary style with a simplicity and boldness of flavor. Unlike American wine bars, not all dishes are designed not to pair with wine. Some require drinking it as an essential component. For example, the whole snapper in burnt butter topped with mustard leaves and a toothsome shaved konbu. Natural glutamates from the kelp bring out the a gentle sweetness in the delicate flesh. The nutty butter adds an earthy richness. It too screams for an acidic zing of a racy white and could easily support the stone fruit, citrus notes. The same can be said for the Typhoon Shelter prawns, giant, split, grilled finished in a brown herb butter. Firm, just cooked through, incredibly sweet flesh. Again, the acidic component is lacking and begs for any racy acidic white. For a pairing, the prawn and chicken dumpling with chili and vinegar sauce, very good. Not straight up Chinese, the wrap is more toothsome, the filling flavorful with a soft texture. The chili sauce brings the dish together. A slight charred, burnt taste from being cooked out in the chili oil adds an incredible depth of flavor that, along with the vinegar, brings the dish together. Its earthiness and bold flavor pairs beautifully with a spicy shiraz. Very reasonable pricing. Bottle prices range from 70 - 300AUD with the average bottle at 100AUD. Very friendly, knowledgeable service. Worthy way to experience another dimension of Australia's foodie scene and show off your super power.

Yelp
This is THE restaurant. I came here during a solo trip to Melbourne, and it was the perfect place to treat myself without feeling awkward for eating alone. They have a couple options for tasting menus, or you can order a la carte. I went for one of the tasting menus, which they can scale up or down depending on how many people you have, and I loved that I got to try so many dishes. I will say the portions are quite generous, so I was already stuffed before the main even came out. You can taste the authentic Japanese flavors and ingredients, but there is a bit of a fusion twist on everything. The combination of different spices and textures made each dish a party in my mouth. Hard to choose favorites, but I'm obsessed with the seared tuna on nori cracker, the sesame noodle salad, and the slow-cooked lamb shoulder. The peanut butter dessert was also delicious but just a tad too sweet for my taste. Also the ambiance is buzzy and open and it's always fun to watch the chefs do their thing.

Yelp
Always a favourite to visit when I come to Melbourne. Great flavours, fresh and interesting, service is prompt and smart. Took my sister there this week for the first time and she is now a convert too!

Yelp
Visited on a Saturday night and the staff were kind enough to accommodate us despite the fact we didn't have a booking. Waiting staff were very polite and professional with good recommendations. This is japanese fusion resteraunt. The chilli pork dumplings were a standout dish and so was the slow roast lamb. No information was immediately apparent about the sourcing of the food. If I were to liken this resteraunt to a movie I would say it was like Oceans 11 because its funky, slick and will surprise you.

Yelp
I had the chance to go a few times on my last trip to Melbourne and really enjoyed both visits The Sinister Figure #5 is a great cocktail, a twist on a Martinez and quite nice. On the small plate list, I tried the pickles and the Kimchi. Have to say the latter was definitely the star though the pickles are no slouch. For starters, I liked both the tuna and the kingfish. I think the latter is even better than ChinChin's which is saying something (both are awesome). But the New England lobster roll is the star of the show (Since I didnt want to go with a heavy main either time). Holy cow so amazing in texture and flavor. I have only had lobster once since my last Supernormal lobster roll so it's not my go-to but this is different. For dessert, you cannot beat the Peanut Butter Parfait (shareable unless you are starving like I was). And they had a nice cocktail to accompany it called the Salted Oak, which i think was like a nutty old fashioned. Eating the bar here is really enjoyable for the single traveler and overall the staff and atmosphere are terrific.

Yelp
What a perfect ending to our two weeks down under. Supernormal was right near our hotel in CBD. We came by earlier in the day to put a name for later. When we arrived we were seated right away. The space is modern and fun, with vending machines delivering Pocky snacks. The open kitchen is a nice touch. Food is meant for sharing though so good you won't want to. Our server was probably the kindest and informative we've ever had. She took care of us and made it a perfect meal. The food was great. Asian modern delicious. Try as much as you can. Better to go in groups.

Yelp
Contemporary spot for a leisurely with a superb wine and liquor list, including some relatively hard to find Australian whisky varieties. Emphasis on "leisurely" -- they ask you upfront if you're pressed for time, because a typical experience here is probably 2 hours? Service is solid but a little spotty, probably due to how busy they were. Definitely sit at the bar if you can-- watching them do food prep as well as training employees is a welcome addition to the experience, as is the massive slab of kingfish they were slicing for sashimi. *drool* Food is... very good but not memorable, if that makes any sense. Kingfish sashimi, for example, is tasty, but overly decorated with nori. The beef bao is quality, but will never win any awards-- to do a mind-blowing bao simply isn't a thing at 99.99% of places. The chicken and shrimp dumpling is a nice variety compared to the usual chicken and shrimp, but same impression as the bao. The Sichuan chicken noodle salad had some veggies that were baked for a little crunch, perhaps the most surprisingly tasty thing on the menu. Perhaps the best item off the set menu #1 (Banquet 1, was it?) is the sichuan lamb, which has just enough differences in texture after being slow-cooked (maybe they sear it after?) to be interesting and surprisingly delicious. And of course, the peanut butter parfait is worth the noms!

Yelp
We wanted to try some fusion Asian food while on a trip to Melbourne and decided to check out Supernomal. Conveniently located near the Hosier ln and surrounded by a lot of other great eateries, this place was perfect. Our initial plan was to grab a dish to share before heading to another place for dinner a few hours later. That's why we just ordered the slow-cooked lamb with spring onion pancakes. And boy, was it BIG. The portion size was huge and delicious. Not wanting to waste it, we ended up eating just this (and a small appy) and we had to cancel our later dinner reservation. But the ;amb was delicious. It was cooked perfectly and easily fell apart. The Szechuan spices were just perfect! Taking a star off due to the appy. It was meant to be Korean style rice cake in chili sauce but it felt very amateurish. Instead of the rich Korean chili paste style sauce (or an interesting fusion version), it was a sweet/spicy sauce you get at fastfood places. Expected way more than that.

Yelp
This place is amazing and please make sure you eat the dumplings. We had the banquet menu and it was perfect amount of food. The cocktails are delicious and even the limonada was fantastic. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
We popped in at 5pm to grab some food before a show. Such a great recommendation! Delicious and well-run, helpful and professional staff. Room is nice.

Yelp
I came here with a gf from Melbourne. Its a mixture of Asian Fusion and something else I cant pint point it. Its in Flinders Lane and apparently most resturants here have a wait time. We waited 15 mins and had a Umeshu Drink. Delicous. For food we have the Duck Bao ( open faces as we call it in Canada). Boneless Chicken with Kimchi Mayo, Beef Tartar, and Meringue dessert. It was amazing to say the least and definately puts Vancouver food scene to shame . Everything was very flavourful, there wasnt a fave dish as everything was amazing!! Would definately come back!

Yelp
Supernormal is the furthest thing from normal. Tucked away on Flinders Lane, it's easy to pass this place and not realise it, something I admit to doing a few times. If you're in the area and need a bite, I'd definitely recommend you drop in. Super professional staff, resonable prices, impeccable menu, great flavour combinations, and half serves. Let's just say, this place checks a lot of boxes off my list. Walking in I was greeted by the floor host who promptly seated me by the bar, which features hooks underneath to keep your bags and umbrellas off the floor, a nice touch. I dined a little before lunchtime so it was relatively quiet, however as time went by, it was evident this was a popular spot among business-types. An impressive selection of teas and an even more comprehensive drinks list means you'll never be thirsty. Half servings are available here- handy if you're dining alone like I was- half the serving size, half the price, means you get to try more before filling up. Table service was prompt, waitstaff were attentive and knowledgeable, and food came without delay. Some ingredients on the menu weren't available but these were replaced and didn't detract from the flavour. If you're a fan of raw plates, you'll love the kingfish, featuring golden dashi jelly- a strangely delightful addition to your usual sashimi.

Yelp
Supernormal's positive reviews and its convenient location on Flinders lane sealed the deal when my dinner companion and I needed a spot for an after-work catch-up. The staff was quite attentive - it was almost like I was back dinning in the US again. They were also well versed on a smooth upsell - "would you like a G & T while you wait for your friend?" "Anything else before I bring out the dessert menu?" The Asian inspired dishes are designed to be shared. Which is great for someone like me that suffers from food envy and a desire to try *everything* on the menu. Between the two of us, we ordered the kimchi, calamari and mussels, kingfish, and vegetable dumplings. (Those toasted pumpkin seeds gracing the table also deserve a special shout out.) Everything was delicious, but the kingfish from the raw bar was the real standout for me. I would go back again just for that. Supernormal is a place that you can take your parents, a date, or work colleagues. I'm looking forward to returning and trying a number of other menu items we didn't have room for the first time.

Yelp
Walking into supernormal and being greeted by uber professional staff, exceptional decor, and a long long bar, I excitedly texted my friend letting her know that we were going to be in for a treat. Famous last words. I was seated at the bar until my friend arrived. Got here at five thirty on a Wednesday evening so didn't have to wait but my oh my did the place fill up quickly. By the time the waitress arrived to explain our menus to us I could barely hear her. She said something about not getting the lobster roll because despite being 15 bucks it was the size of a slider and couldn't be shared. She said to get a couple of small things and then a main. Based on a colleague's recommendation we got the white cut chicken, szechuan lamb with spring onion pancake and prawn and chicken dumplings. Now the verdict. Despite being called supernormal, the food was pretty undernormal and what I mean by this is that I could get better food at a cheap Chinese dumpling house or a take away. The white cut chicken was basically a dry roast chicken salad with no dressing and lots of nuts. And why is it called white cut chicken when chicken is white? The szechuan lamb came in a tomato base sauce. The sauce basically tasted like pasta sauce with some spice to it. The spring onion pancake was the blandest thing I've ever had. I opened it up and didn't even see spring onion in it. The green chutney it came with did not complement it at all. The prawn and chicken dumplings (6 for 14 bucks) were great. The stars are for the service. We also got some Japanese green tea which had subtle tastes of lemon and pepper. Was pretty good. Food wad underwhelming. Stars for service and venue.

Yelp
Service seems to have really dropped off since last year. Whenever I come in, I am feel very unwelcome due to how I am treated by the staff who aren't in uniform. It's a shame to have a beautiful meal only to have it soured by the FOH service. Food and presentation is still consistently amazing.

Yelp
Just a GREAT experience all the way around; service, food, ambiance, and innovation. They serve half portions so you can try more dishes. They have to do that because nobody could possibly go in there and choose just one or two things.

Yelp
Supernormal is located just near Regents Theatre so you can head there to get an early dinner before your show. Great staff assist you through food selections, and a delightful sommelier who was young, vibrant and well informed, helping identify a great wine to match your taste preferences. Seated by the bar, overlooking the action in the kitchen, we were able to watch the art of creating each meal. The food was an exploration of complimentary flavours, textures and design on the plate. We were treated to efficient and friendly service. So glad we got to experience this restaurant.

Yelp
Do yourself a favour and check this place out! Came here during my visit, glad I did. We came on a Saturday night at about 6pm. No problems getting seat. We opted for the $65 a head banquet so we get a try a bit of everything. Started we had pumpkin seeds.. Mmm so nice and toasty. Then tuna sashimi which was the bomb. The tuna melts in your mouth the chicken noodle dish was amazing too. Then Chicken dumplings, lamb curry with pancakes.. Chocolate parfait for dessert. Overall awesome!

Yelp
I was recommended to try supernormal by a friend and I took a recent opportunity to try it as a solo diner. I was seated upon arrival at the bar. Precisely where I like to sit when I dine solo to absorb all the action in the kitchen and exchange amusing remarks with my fellow solo diners. My friendly waiter explained to me that I am able to order 1/2 portions of most dishes and took my drink order. Which was Pink Panda and the most refreshing mocktail I have had in my life to date. My order consisted of eggplant and crispy pork salad, Miso roasted cauliflower, vegetarian dumplings and meat bao. The eggplant salad was out standing (could have finished a whole portion) and the cauliflower was delicious. While I found the meat bao to be a tad oily, it was full of flavour. The vegetarian dumplings lacked in flavour and the texture of the skin needed to be more supple and less tough. Overall, I will be back to the mocktails and to try other plates to share but I will leave the dumplings to the experts from the East.

Yelp
If my stomach were a place, Andrew McConnell would be major. Or maybe even king. Golden Fields was my favourite restaurant in Melbourne and I adored the test kitchen 'Supernormal Canteen' in Fitzroy, so I was pretty eager to get here and see what they had done to expand on the Golden Fields vision. Disappointingly, a lot of the things I loved about Golden Fields is now lost. The intimate date night vibe is gone. The fancy white table clothes with a knock-your-socks-off asian fusion food offering has been replaced by an expansive, more fast paced and pumping venue. Thankfully, the food is still very much knock your socks off good. The staff from Golden Fields have moved with the venue, so the warm familiar greetings, super-knowledgable somms and friendliness has not been lost in the larger setting. Neither have those addictive toasted pumpkin seeds on arrival. The prawn and chicken dumplings were a great starter - I would be a happy girl if I could have that chilli vinegar on limitless supply for every dish I eat from now on. My partner in crime and I tend to only splash out at these places on date night, but on this occasion we were lucky enough to be joined by two fellow foodies which means we finally had enough stomachs to tackle the whole pork shoulder. Yep, all of it. $74 might give you some intense sticker shock, but this huge dish, served with steamed buns, cabbage and a delicious but mild chilli sauce is a heck of a lot of amazing pork. It will happily satisfy 4-6 people with a couple of sides. One mouthful will have your eyes set straight to the back of your head. The infamous peanut butter parfait has made the journey over to Golden Fields too, although it's changed. Shorter and rounder makes it ideal for sharing, but isn't quite as good IMHO. There was heated discussion at the table about the loss of corner 'nibs' by making it short and round instead of tall and square. Yeah...a wine list as good as the one here will do that to your conversation. It's a great place to come if you want to talk about nothing but food for the entire experience, because everything served up is likely to be a show stopper. So while it may not have replaced Golden Fields in my heart as #1, it's still a great place to impress and splash out on some seriously good food.

Yelp
I gotta admit I was a little worried it wouldn't live up to the hype. I was happy to be proven wrong. This place delivers AWSOME food, faultless service and an overall experience you'll want to head back for time and time again. First up, get there early (or late). I got there at about 5.40 on a Saturday night. If I was 10 mins later, I would have had a bit of a wait. Secondly, get a seat at the 'bar'. You'll have a birds eye view of the kitchen. The further down the restaurant the better. Now to the food. Each dish is designed to share (but if you're flying solo, don't worry - you'll just have more). We had the banquet menu and would happily have that bad boy again. Standout dishes were (although all were good) the lobster rolls, the lamb and the dessert. Now I'm not really a sweet tooth but OMG it was good. The salted peanut parfait with chocolate mousse is AMAZING. a perfect way to end a brilliant meal.

Yelp
Wow what an experience! I took my mum to Supernormal as an Easter weekend treat and we absolutely loved everything this popular restaurant had to offer. High praise given my mum can sometimes be picky (well always is very picky) about her food. No complaints and only praise made for a great night. We ordered the chef's menu. An excellent way to sample what Supernormal has in store. I loved the Korean and Japanese influences that informed the starters and the cold noodle salad was a joy too. The lobster rolls were a true standout and I will definitely be back for more of these delights. I thoroughly enjoyed the slow cooked lamb curry for main along with its exciting condiments too. So much food, such great value and informative service! Tip. Go early to avoid the queue!

Yelp
After being totally in love with Goldenfields (now closed) and the Supernormal Canteen test kitchen that popped up in Carlton over summer, I pretty much knew I'd love Supernormal when it opened. Normally I wouldn't bother visiting a place so soon after it opened (teething problems and all that) but hey, it's Andrew McConnell, the man can do no wrong when it comes to Melbourne dining. Despite only taking limited bookings, getting a walk in table on a weekend lunchtime was actually painless. I almost didn't want to Yelp about how easy it was, lest you all line up and make it harder for me next time! The three of us got in right away and were seated in a lovely booth bathed in sunlight. We were drinking natural wine (The Wallflower from Adelaide Hills) and eating pickles and those savoury toasted pumpkin seeds in no time. I visited with two newbies and each time a dish came out their enthusiasm and smiled grew larger and larger. We attacked the pickled bonito, pork belly with kimchi, white cut chicken with black sesame, braised eggplant with tofu and the peking duck with bao. A suitable amount of food for three lunching ladies, all exquisitely made and plated and an adventure for our mouths. There's familiar faces on the floor who are well versed in all things hospo and also some newbies who are still obviously learning the menu and the A.Mac "way". I loved the interior - airy with lots of natural light - and visiting the bathrooms downstairs revealed an area that will soon be the karaoke room (!). I'm looking forward to many a date night sitting at the super long (and not so normal) kitchen bar.

Yelp
Supernormal was Super-good! First time here so the Super-polite waitress helped us through the menu. She confirmed we'd made great choices and no need to order more at that point, which was nice rather than trying to up-sell. Pan fried spicy beef bun, Lobster in Brioche bun, Wagyu Rump, tomato salad & Tofu, Cold Pork Belly... amongst others were highlights. Nothing normal here, everything was super-super! We'll definitely be back :-)

Yelp
warning if you are from America! Re: the lobster roll If you live anywhere near New England, or hell if you live near a mall with a Luke's lobster - you will be disappointed. It's mostly mayo. With like thin delicate slices of lobster that are pretty laughable. The flavor profile is good, but it needs 300% more lobster and half the mayo. I don't know if they have celery in Australia (I have yet to see any) but a couple of crunchy little celery slices in the lobster salad would go a long way as well. Other than that, it is a typical hipster chic restaurant with sufficiently self important servers and cool branding.
