"Declared the “chicest place to stay in Iowa” by one publication in 2022, this 137-room Beaux-Arts hotel has historic bones and an incredibly convenient location. Less than two blocks from the massive downtown farmers market, locals flock to this hotel for yoga and mimosas, fashion shows, and Mulberry Street Tavern, Surety’s refined restaurant that has “decidedly Don Draper vibes,” Handfelt says. As for the rooms, the walls are decked with art curated by globally-renowned, Des Moines-based gallery owner Liz Lidgett and the mini-bars are stocked with Central Iowa snacks like Old Station Craft Meats Snack Sticks and Mo’Crack Pretzels. Sean and Edd were the most friendliest front desk associates I have dealt with at a hotel. I have to travel a lot for work and this was my first time in Des Moines. Surety really made my experience a great one. Due to the snow storm this Wednesday, I wasn't sure if my flight was going to be delayed but first they gave me a late checkout at 3 PM. When my flight was cancelled, they managed to let me pay for another night to stay. Thank you so much for your great service and making my trip great. Also, the room and the hotel in general is beautiful! Well equipped gym as well!

Loved the hotel! Clean, cozy, and great location! Downsides are that there’s no help getting luggage up, construction noise outside started at 7am and never ceased, and there’s no room service. All of these things complicated my stay alone with three small children. While it was a great stay, they could be more accommodating.

I’m so impressed by the Surety Hotel. It has been my vision to have my wedding in the solarium for so long, and to say my vision came true is an understatement. From the front desk and my perfect stay in the Merchandise Suite to all of the support staff we say thank you! Special shout out to Aleah and Megan for helping me coordinate this day and being so responsive to my ideas and emails. Thank you to Sergio for making the day run so smooth! He was like a day-of coordinator on steroids. I couldn’t have completed this day without those three people. They all did things I didn’t even think of, and I’m so surprised and my heart is full. I can’t wait to return for our one year anniversary!

Gorgeous new (2020) retro reno of a stately 1913 former finance building. ||We stayed in a corner Studio. Soaring ceilings, large windows, terrific spacious bathroom with large, beautifully tiled shower. There’s a great outdoor courtyard where we enjoyed a glass of wine in a beautiful setting. Beautiful sitting areas in the lobby with a small coffee shop.||A first rate place to stay in Des Moines.

The staff was very helpful in making sure our stay was amazing. the food and drinks located in the motel were amazing. don't skip there breakfast sandwich or breakfast burrito. The only thing i would change would be the parking scenario. maybe they had valet but I wasn't made aware of it. Still a wonderful stay.

Staff was hospitable and accommodating. The rooms were nice, clean, however, they were really small. I suggest that you add space and allow for a table, so that we can use it to dine/place our laptops. Other than that, the location is great and it is worth the money.

Super cute hotel in the heart of downtown. Wonderful and spacious rooms, clean, great gym and friendly staff. Would stay here again if I’m ever in the DSM area.

This is THE place to stay in the downtown area! The room was fantastic and the bed was really comfortable. The staff was really friendly and the hotel has an excellent vibe! I'll definitely stay again!

Yelp
I loved this bank-turned-Hotel. I'm a sucker for a great lobby, i.e. one that has lots of places to hang out, get business done, meet up with people, get food and drink, and maybe even play a little pool. The rooms seem to have a very clean (but not antiseptic), classy and sexy vibe with a bar and snacks included. They ain't cheap though. I can't say much about the cost since i was here for work but I do love the things they offer. The neighborhood ain't all that exciting but hey, it's downtown so there's that. There is, however, a grocery store/pharmacy/liquor store (with a Starbucks included) called Hy-Bee and its only a block or so away. I hope i get to stay here again...although I can't swear that I'm thrilled about Des Moines. I ran into a few too many Hell's Angels for my taste.

Yelp
This is probably one of the nicest hotels I've ever had the pleasure to stay at. Check in was a very smooth process. Initially I had requested to not have a room near the elevators and they definitely came through with that seeing as my room was probably the furthest away from the elevator. The room in itself was a splendor, as if I had been whisked away to the prohibition era. I love that I walked into the room with the sound of jazz music playing on the TV. Even the little details where the TV displayed "Welcome Enit" was a really nice touch after a tiring day. I don't say this often about a hotel, but the bathroom was soooo beautiful! I spent a good few minutes just standing there and taking it all in. The pictures will never do it justice but you can see what I mean. The lobby was also a picture of the 1920's, with a roaring fireplace, and soft, warm lighting to mellow out and relax. We wanted to dine at the adjacent restaurant but even during the middle of the week there was a long wait time so we ended up dining elsewhere but we did have breakfast in the morning, and it was exquisite. Freshly baked bread with fresh avocado, smoked salmon and a perfectly fried egg on top. Hearty, and delicious with a perfect cup of complimentary coffee. The people at the front desk were very friendly, and I honestly don't know how our stay could've been better. I would absolutely recommend this hotel and would stay again should I ever have to return to the area.

Yelp
I had a wonderful stay at Surety! The staff was friendly, the lobby is gorgeous, and the rooms are comfy and well appointed. A lot of folks are complaining about parking, but as long as you do the research on where their lots are before you arrive, I found the parking very easy. Even the day it was raining I was able to quickly get into the hotel since it is literally across the street. I especially loved the coffee they provided in the lobby each morning. It was by Black and White Roasters a local coffee roaster to DSM. It was always piping hot and super delicious. My coworker found it comical how much I loved the coffee. The only thing that wasn't clear was if they offered room service from the downstairs restaurant or not. Basically after heading down to the restaurant I learned that they will take your order and charge you a takeout/room service fee. I ended up waiting in the lobby for my takeout order and still got charged the takeout fee. I would have been better off just ordering it from my room or eating at their bar. The meal was delicious, but I made the mistake of not looking at the price, and it was by far the most expensive trout I have ever eaten. I would not order it again. My favorite thing in the bathroom were the showers! I loved the dark green tile and overall design of the spage. You are in the middle of a small city so I would recommend a noise machine to drown out some of the street noise. Beds were very comfortable and my room had a small desk setup so I could work from there or their super comfortable and well appointed lobby. If I am ever back in DSM, I would certainly stay at the Surety again.

Yelp
The Surety Hotel sure is neat! I stayed on a random weeknight, for business. The staff is beyond knowledgeable and helpful. I called prior to see if I could get an early check-in. I really appreciated their help! When I did check-in, I was a bit early and got upgraded to a corner studio king. What beautiful rooms! The corner studio king boasts a parlor sofa, writing desk, large bathroom with a designated makeup vanity and a clocktower city view. I loved the restored wood floors, too. Rewind a minute. The mid-century modern vibe is extraordinary but the bones of the historic twelve-story building are everything. The Hippee Building is from the early 1900s-- and at one time was the tallest skyscraper in DSM. It has since been known as the Midland Building, Savings and Loan Building, Southern Surety Building... now Surety Hotel. I am so glad this hotel is officially listed as a historic place, it was renovated with such care and vision. Parking is nearby. There is a covered parking garage and a non-covered lot all within a few minute walk. Kuddos to the Surety Hotel for emphasizing local. The complimentary morning coffee in the lobby is a local company BLK & Bold. The standard 'do not disturb' signs are out of this world, made of leather by local, Fontenelle Supply Co. This is one of the coolest hotels I've stayed at in recent memory. I'm going to be honest, it was off my radar because most of my hotel stays nowadays revolve around my kids' need for a pool. (The Surety Hotel does not have a pool.) If you're adulting in DSM -- in town for business or pleasure-- book the Surety Hotel like right now. It has made the historic Hippee Building beyond hip, again!

Yelp
I love this hotel. Excellent accommodations very modern and cool. Everyone on staff was very professional, helpful, and well informed. I especially have to mention Josie, her front desk. customer service was outstanding. Whenever I come to Des Moines, this will be the place I will be staying.

Yelp
I came to the Surety Hotel for the first time in the fall for a Christmas shopping event. It was such a beautiful atmosphere! I wanted to come back again to eat at their restaurant as well. When we had a chance to stay here for a wedding downtown this summer we booked it right away. I think the hotel hotel is beautiful, the lobby, the receptions, rooms, etc. they were also very accommodating. I had called the day of to see if they had any early check in available since I had a toddler with me and they were so kind to text me as soon as one was open about an hour later. The reception staff were extremely friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. We were only there for two days but they knew which room I was in without me even giving them my name. My daughter naps midday and they were very kind to send housekeeping earlier in the morning so we wouldn't wake her during nap time. The hotel is within walking distance of so many places downtown including a short walk to the farmers market on Saturday, which was very convenient to get to. There was also a little liquor store right next store for snacks and drinks. The room had a mini fridge in it and was super clean and modern. I would say my only issue was the parking because they utilize surrounding lots instead of having an attached one for guests. The lots aren't far and if I hadn't had a toddler fussing in my back seat I probably could have found it more quickly if I just pulled over briefly to check their instructions again. The lot isn't far at all but it wasn't clearly marked as surety overflow parking so I had to go in and ask first. We enjoyed our stay here and will definitely be back at some point for some dinner, drinks, and maybe another overnight!

Yelp
Don't even think about it: simply stay here! It's perfect! Great location in downtown, staff is incredible, the sleeping rooms and lobby are comfortably appointed. Did I mention: dog friendly?! So kind to the pups! Great coffee drinks till 2 pm in the lobby. Yappy hour: Thursday. I'm simply moving in and staying! Love the Surety!

Andrea W.

Yelp
We recently stayed here during a staycation! This hotel has a Great Gatsby feel, the mid century modern vibe is all throughout the hotel. It is a beautiful-fully designed hotel, and there are so many small details about the decor and atmosphere that make it a really special stay. Due to CoVID restrictions there isn't full room service. Parking is an additional $20 per night. We upgraded to a deluxe king room with a courthouse view, it wasn't a direct view of the courthouse as expected, was not worth the extra money for the room. Next time I wouldn't pay for this upgrade- something to think about if you are taking that into consideration. The room has all the amenities you could think of and it's so beautiful and we decorated. There is not an in room coffee maker but free coffee offered in the lobby each morning. Room does have a mini fridge, closet, travel toiletries & hair dryer. We really enjoyed our stay here during our recent staycation and the staff was friendly and attentive. We'd come back again!

Yelp
This is the hottest new hotel in downtown Des Moines, located in the historic Iowa Loan & Trust building. Its renovated beaux-arts style incorporates great modern features in the rooms such as all-glass showers, soft lighting, and built-in closets and bookcases. It's an affordable and very comfortable place to stay on business or for an event/wedding. The customer service, food, and drink were all great. If you have brunch at Mulberry Street Tavern (downstairs), the shakshuka is excellent. The wifi is also very fast and stable. My only hestitation is that the rooms are a little small, so plan on booking a suite if you are going to spend any real time relaxing or resting in your room. Also, the parking can be a litle tricky with an oversized vehicles, but the secure underground parking is otherwise fine.

Yelp
My son, his dog and I were driving from NYC to LA due to a job transfer. We spent one night at the Surety Hotel. The rooms were lovely and clean. We enjoyed a drink and dinner in the Bar. The entire staff from reception to bar tenderer to server to hostess everyone was welcoming, gracious and professional. If we ever pass this way again we will definitely return to the fabulous Surety Hotel! Thanks.

Lucie Rose B.

Yelp
Excellent stay. The hotel and accompanying bar are beautiful, tastefully decorated with attention given to preserving the original features (tile floor, moldings, etc.). Bed was firm and comfortable, and the room and bathroom perfectly clean. My only less-than-perfect experience was that the shower in our 11th-floor room wouldn't get hot hot, but it was at least warm. Enjoyed an unbeatable manhattan, baby lettuce salad, and fries even after our late arrival in the stylish, serene, and well-lit lobby. Already looking forward to our next stop in Des Moines to return to the Surety!

Brooke L.

Yelp
Update: They handled the issue with the mattress and wow on the customer service!! Loving the hotel and even the maid was VERY nice. Hands down best hotel and for the money. I wish I would have stayed here the whole trip. It is new, boutique and upper scale. Anywhere else it would be way overpriced. This price and location delivers. Dan? Or Dave at the front desk was awesome! Great customer service and info on where to eat! Only issue is the bed is VERY uncomfortable :((( I think possibly broken as it's slanted/sinks in and feels like it's slightly softer than the floor.

Tina W.

Yelp
We stayed her for a wedding over the New Years Eve weekend. I had very high hopes as the website made the hotel look amazing. I also had high expectations for the staff since it was a downtown hotel. I was very disappointed in both. However, the lobby is gorgeous and an inviting/swanky space. When we checked in, there was a miscommunication on what our balance was to book. The front desk gave us a price and I swiped my card. Well, she was incorrect. Had to call another girl over(who was not happy she needed to assist & made that known) to finish and help. I then had to swipe another card for the remaining balance. The entire check in process took about 30 minutes. Once we finally reached our room, I almost felt as if we were penalized that the 2nd front desk girl had to help us. It was a corner room on the fourth floor. The entire hallway is in need of desperate repair, Especially the tile floor. Once we got in the room, letting us know we need to have our room key card in the holder to turn & keep the lights on would've been a great piece of information to know during our 30 minute check in process. The room looked as though it had been unoccupied for a year. The amount of dust on the glass shelves, tables and floor was quite a bit. We had about an 1/8 of a roll of toilet paper, the box of condoms were open and sitting on the shelf, and the bathroom door would not stay open. When you used the shower, it leaked so bad the floor was soaked and would run onto the hard wood floor. I notified the font desk and she asked if we needed more floor towels. Sure! If you aren't worried about the hard wood, neither am I. Our wedding was on New Years Eve. When we arrived back at the hotel @ 2:07AM, we ordered Door Dash and had a seat in the lobby. We were promptly informed by a guy in the lobby(supposedly security) that the lobby closed @ 2:15AM and we needed to go to our room. There were 3 other parties in the lobby. I'm not sure why we were the only ones being told we needed to go to our rooms. I've stayed in 100's of hotels. This is the first time I was ever told I needed to go to my room because the lobby was closed. For the price we paid vs the way we were treated and the quality, we should get a refund or at least a discount.

Mashel H.

Yelp
Nice Hotel. A few changes would of made things a little nicer. If you have to get dressed and go to the lobby for free coffee, then the coffee pot and creamer should be filled. I had to wait for creamer and the coffee never did come so I went back to room. We were back and forth a lot so we purchased the parking package. We needed a ticket from front desk to get out of garage. They will only give one ticket at time. Every time we needed car, we had to wait at front desk to get another ticket. The staff were friendly and the lobby is nicely decorated.

Nicole K.

Yelp
A true gem in Des Moines. We've stayed here twice and both times enjoyed delicious food and top notch service. Clean and stylish facilities. I can't wait to try the other hotels in this brand.

Daniele G.

Yelp
honestly don't think they even swept or vacuumed, as you can tell. it's a really nice old fashioned/modern hotel but wouldn't recommend if you're a clean freak

Kevin B.

Yelp
Very nice, well appointed, well managed location. If you're used good service it can be found here. I was driving from Los Angekes to Chicago, and just got to tired to continue. Stopped for the night, had a great meal at Mulberry Street Tavern , located in the hotel. Honestly I doubt I will ever be in Des Moines again, but it if you are, look no further for great place to stay!

Jim S.

Yelp
Made reservations 2 months ago through one of their partners and when we checked in they didn't have it. They told us sorry but they had one room left and it was $300 per night and our reservation was for $150 per night. We had no choice, it was 9:00pm in a strange town, the front desk said they could give us an $11 discount, whoo hoo! We ended up paying for the 2 nights $900 (including the reservation) , Surety should have honored the $150 because we had emails and hard copies of the reservation. They told us we had to pursue a refund from THEIR partner. They know absolutely nothing about customer service. PS. Be careful of the wood floors in the rooms, I got 1 splinter and snagged my socks constantly.

Kathy D.

Yelp
Hotel is nice but parking is a mess. parking garage is not attached and you have to walk to get to it. Drug deal's going down in underground parking garage when we there May 11-14, 2023. Parking is $22 a night but on weekends garage is packed and you have to find street parking. Staff is rude. No free breakfast, parking, Rooms small but nice bathroom. Wont stay here again due to parking garage at night. Just unsafe . But it's downtown so what do you expect.

MidWest B.

Yelp
I can't write enough good about this hotel. I've stayed in hotels all over the world, and the Surety is in my top five. Everything was perfect from the decor, atmosphere, art, and every detail that made the experience the fantastic stay it was. As if that isn't enough, let me give my highest rating to staff and customer service. We are in the hospitality business and I can tell you a good staff is hard to come by, but it seems like Surety Hotel was able to find the best of the best. They checked every box, made us fell special, and addressed personally as if we were both clients and friends. We will be back!

Allen J.

Yelp
Stayed here for the first time on a lil staycation and I can't wait until the next staycation! A beautiful building, a lovely blend of old and new aesthetic in the rooms, flooring, etc. Our room had Netflix, YouTube and pandora capability so I didn't need to use my Fire stick after all. We also were able to play our music on the TV through their fancy Bluetooth system. They welcomed us with champagne on ice. Our dog came along as well and they welcomed him with some treats, a toy, and a place to fill his water and food. The daily parking deal is a good one so be sure to add it... it beats the regular rate and the stress of getting a parking ticket. It was tough to leave the Surety because we had a ball!

Adam H.

Yelp
Had a great stay at the Surety Hotel in Des Moines. Great food in the downstairs restaurant. Everything was clean and nice. Would stay again.

Yelp
Wedding Venue Review Atmosphere 5/5 Transparency from Staff 2/5 We got married at the Surety a few weeks ago and while it is absolutely beautiful and a stunning venue. I was definitely left with a bad taste after my event. There is no doubt that the Surety is a beautiful venue and our wedding was gorgeous but just a heads up to other engaged couples to be extra cautious and vigilant on pricing. I had asked during a tour if we could bring in little shots for our wedding favors and was told that it would be no problem by the person I was working with. However, after the wedding they turned around and charged us a corkage fee for each favor we handed out to guests. No one mentioned anything to us the day of the wedding, they were placed on the table plenty of time ahead. Not a single staff member thought to bring up that it was an issue that was going to cost us after the fact, they chose to just say nothing and put the additional charge on the bill. Again, this was approved ahead of time when I had asked, and then we were charged for something we were told we could do. The whole situation was very deceitful, but they made an extra chunk of money off us. Their pricing in general is not very up front, we had asked to see a catering menu before signing our contract so we could get an idea what our F&B minimum would get us, but we were never given one. When it came to our tasting and making our food selections, I had to go back and forth and ask about the prices of each individual item and continuously ask what options there were. For as many times as we asked for a list of options and their pricing so that we could figure out how we wanted to structure our money between Appetizers, Meal, and Snacks, we were never given one. It was a giant headache. The transparency when it comes to money was just not there and it was unfortunate and really spoiled my view of the venue. When you're spending $10K somewhere, it shouldn't have to be so difficult. That said, our wedding was lovely and the space is beautiful. The food was good and the servers were awesome! They made sure to bring us some appetizers while we took pictures during cocktail hour which was just so sweet of them. All in all, the venue was very nice and the wedding ran really smoothly. Just wish we wouldn't have been charged unknowingly for something we were told we could do. Tried to work out the situation with the hotel but they stood by their actions and ghosted me.

Allison S.

Yelp
Amazing redesign of a historic building. From the moment you walk in you can feel the history and yet it's still modern and chic. Service was amazing from start to finish and the rooms are truly one-of-a-kind! Beautiful hardwoods, amazing bathroom with breathtaking views. What more could you want!

Michael K.

Yelp
Absolutely magnificent hotel in downtown Des Moines. This is an historic building (1913) that has been totally transformed from an office building to a hotel. Beautifully maintained and very comfortable. A true gem that should not be missed.

Kath F.

Yelp
We booked a block of rooms for our daughter's wedding. Did not find staff to be helpful or accommodating and bar was closed at 11:00 on a Friday night. We also had guests at the Des Lux Hotel and heard reports that the staff there went above and beyond. Surety charged $5 per room to distribute gift boxes for out of town guests staying there; Des Lux did not.

Holly D.

Yelp
We chose to stay on a last minute, quick weekend getaway and had an excellent experience! We will stay here going forward any time we're in the area. Beds and pillows were very comfortable, loved the design of the whole place, the atmosphere is definitely upscale and classy. We spent both nights at the Mulberry St. bar attached to the hotel and loved it. Customer service was great at the front desk! The parking situation is okay, having a short walk outside to get to the parking garage (we didn't use valet) but nothing abnormal for a downtown hotel in a city. Can't wait to return!

Amelia W.

Yelp
We put my parents up at the Surety Hotel to break up a long drive. I called ahead to confirm valet parking and arrange a surprise and the hotel staff was helpful, responsive, and accommodating. My parents raved about their stay, loved the beautiful rooms and tall ceilings, and enjoyed their in room cocktail kit (this was an add-on). Specifically, Ariana, at the front desk was extremely kind, professional, and helpful and volunteered to valet my parents car when the valet was off duty. 10/10 for customer experience at this place!

Nathan H.

Yelp
Wow, I've been fortunate enough to travel the world and the experience my fiancé and I and the Surety was world class. The staff was extremely attentive, and the room amazing! We were lucky enough to dine at the Mulberry St. Cafe twice during out stay including cocktails. The food prep and service were both impeccable! I can't say enough about this very special place right in heart of Des Moines!

Amanda M.

Yelp
I wish I had a reason to go back soon! The staff was incredible. They were friendly and helpful to my son and me, and the room service after the bar was closed was welcome. The site was clean, modern, and fun. Loved the location, as well!!

Hannah G.

Yelp
We stayed here for NYE 2020/2021 and loved it. The staff was very friendly and helpful when checking in and the room was very clean and had a great view of the courthouse. The bathroom is very cool as you can close the door and make it disappear into a dark brown cabinet wall. All the details in the room are carefully thought out and make it feel modern yet rustic. The only thing I would change is having actual pictures of each room type as they use they same pictures for almost each room on their website. I would also like to see an application for them in the future!

Daniel H.

Yelp
We stayed for three nights and could not have been more pleased. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was clean and very well designed, and the lobby / bar / restaurant area is fantastic. They did a great job incorporating the original design elements of this 1913 building. One of the best hotels in which I've stayed.

Marla W.

Yelp
Had a very small wedding here and everything was wonderful! Staff was incredibly attentive and helpful. Beautiful decor and great atmosphere in the common areas and lobby for photos. Great location with lots within walking distance. We also had an amazing dinner and drinks at the Mulberry Tavern.

Rachel E.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite hotel I've ever stayed in. So clean and welcoming and the best hotel gym I've ever had the pleasure of working out in!

Addison G.

Yelp
Great cocktails, friendly and attentive staff, and a great view of the downtown area. Definitely keep this in mind if you are saying in the Des Moines area.
