On the Grid : Surfing Cowboys

"Surfing Cowboys is a classic Venice staple that's now planted roots in Mar Vista. Though surf culture runs heavy in their blood, these aficionados have many other treasures as well. Specializing in a true California lifestyle, they collect vintage surf memorabilia, mid-century modern artifacts and other curated Hawaiiana and southwestern goods. Part California heritage museum, part niche vintage store, Surfing Cowboys is a must see shopping destination when visiting Mar Vista." - Italic Studio

Google
Surf shack, vintage parlor, ocean curiosity cabinet are just a few names to describe this shop. Nice atmosphere with a diverse selection: you want a pair of vintage boots, they got you, you need a surf board from the 60’s? They might get one or two in shop! On top of denim, vintage shirts, they also propose a nice art selection of photographs and paintings. Definitely a place you want to pass by if you are around Malibu village, personally I enjoy their own branded T-shirt as well as their old toys collection for sale.

Met the owners of this local shop and absolutely loved it here. They have so many gems, even if you’re not in the market to shop it is just incredible to look around. They have so many tokens of surf and California history. Of course, we had to leave with some of their new merch because the designs are so unique and creative! Absolutely one of a kind. I see big things coming for this shop. MUST visit shop in the area!

I like to shop at small friendly independent businesses that care about the products they sell and the people they sell them to…this is that store!! The owners are so passionate about what they do. I really appreciate the thought and care they put into curating their collection of vintage surfboards and how knowledgeable they are about everything in the shop- I could spend forever in here!! They are always so excited to share their latest graphics and the stories behind the designs. I send their hats and tees to my family in New York who love how “California” their products are. They package everything so nicely and ship everything out super quickly…they are the best !!

Google
My favorite store in Malibu!!!!! I love this store so much 🩷 The staff is so knowledgeable and helpful!! Love their in house label!

Google
Posting because of how friendly and welcoming the staff and owners were. I haven’t yet purchased anything but even so, the owners showed me around the store. I love a small boutique where you can tell how much the owners love retail and product. They put so much attention into detail in curating their shop. Will return very soon and can’t wait to check out the latest assortment.

I bought a pair of their “vintage” Levi’s for $100 and found out they were made in 2020. Selling 4 year old jeans for $100 is insane. Very shady… When I asked to return them the owner was incredibly rude and even insulted me saying “clearly you have more time than I do”, which is funny because I’d think it would be the shop’s responsibility to make sure their vintage clothes are actually vintage. My family and I loved coming in here and really love the vibe but after this experience we’re never coming back. Unless you know how to accurately date vintage items, DON’T support them, they’re all about the retro surf vibes to get you to open your wallet, but don’t give a crap about you after you’ve given them money. Seems desperate and very scammy… Vintage buyers beware!

Google
I love Surfing Cowboys! It’s my fave clothing spot to visit when in Malibu. The owners are groovy and have excellent vintage, rock n roll taste. I don’t know where else I could find a rad Bryan Adams tee from ‘87. Stoked!

Google
I went to Surfing Cowboys to look for a gift and had such a wonderful experience. The owner was extremely knowledgeable about the history of surfing and helped me pick out the most perfect book! The store is beautifully decorated with each piece holding a very special history; you can tell how much thought and care goes into curating the space. It’s such a pleasant shopping experience and feels like you’re being welcomed into a comforting home!

Yelp
I love the store. Sales stuff is so friendly and welcoming and I bought a few things here. I stopped in yesterday to buy a very cool sweatshirt and got excellent help from Donna. She was so polite and kind and made our shopping experience wonderful I love all of, the vintage sweatshirts and T-shirts this is definitely one of my favorite stores

Yelp
Truly my favorite shop in Malibu. The staff is so helpful and welcoming and their products are so beautiful and unique. It's the perfect combination of vintage south western and surf culture. They also have fantastic vintage car memorabilia. I have bought so many gifts from here and they're always a hit! Some things are a little pricey but they're absolutely worth it due to their quality and history. Love Surfing Cowboys!! ‍

Yelp
This place is a scam. Bought a tshirt here for $125 then later found it online for $20 with shipping.

Yelp
If you want to spend $300 on two old T-shirts that your mom would use for rags, this is the place to shop

Yelp
It's not everywhere in Malibu that you get great customer service, but it is at Surfing Cowboys! This is my favorite store in the Country Mart to wander around, and the staff is incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about the pieces they've acquired. I went in to the store to look for a birthday present for my father and the employees were so helpful and attentive! Liam even looked through a hundred vintage car magazines to find the perfect one for me. Top notch service, immaculate vibes, a can't miss spot!

Carol E.

Yelp
Such a cool store. Selection feels cultivated and interesting. A story behind each item. Every one is kind and helpful!

Alyssa V.

Yelp
The sales associate shamed me for wearing adidas shoes and implied I'm pro child labor while I was checking out. This interaction made me not want to swipe my card. But the clothes are well made and I got a cute hoodie.

Yelp
What a lovely store! I visited today and bought the perfect birthday gift for my son. There are so many interesting things to browse through. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
I have been a huge fan of the Surfing Cowboys for years now. I love wearing the t-shirts and hoodies because I always get compliments on them. Over the years, I have come to know both the Venice and Malibu shops. Donna takes such pride in her store and the unique merchandise they offer. Truly one of a kind!

Yelp
They have a great selection of vintage goods. As the name implies, there are many cowboy and surfer oriented things. Things like cowboy boots, bolo ties, etc. There are also vintage board shorts and other surfing related things. It's not limited to those two categories though, there are some things like vintage jackets and blankets (I found some from the 1940s).

Yelp
I wish I could say I felt excited about this place but I didn't. The gentleman working the front was very friendly and sweet but the shop owner was quite the opposite. I felt uncomfortable shopping and she was blatantly rude. Don't go in to browse unless you want to be pressured by her. I won't be going back as I don't want to support such a nasty attitude- AVOID DONNA!
google avatar

Micah Y.

Yelp
This place is the worst. Bad customer service. It smells like Donna is constantly crop dusting.

Jane C.

Yelp
Boy was my experience bleak.. I had never been in this store this weekend and decided to pop in- bad idea! The owner of the store (who I found out is named Donna from other reviews) was super pushy immediately and rude also if it isn't clear you're buying something.... Come to find my experience was not the first time she's acted this way... as an owner of a business I'm appalled that she conducts business this way. The boy working the register was nice and greeted me before he was barreled over in conversation by Donna about their amazing vintage goods that are better than sliced bread. I've never been treated so poorly and talked down to or pressured to make a sale (also I noticed a common theme from other reviews). Do better as a business owner, Donna. I will definitely not be ever going back.

Dana B.

Yelp
I love stopping by every time I go to Malibu. They made me feel welcomed even if I didn't buy that time. So knowledgeable & helpful. Can't wait to go back!!! Thanks Donna.

Yelp
Exquisitely cool shop. Defenders of the California Dream. The aesthetics of vintage Navajo rugs, hot rod magazines from 1940s, museum piece surf boards, cowboy crooning and European auto badges...mid-century brilliant.
google avatar

Bobby C.

Yelp
Pretty cool shop that fits in well in AK. From furniture to literature, they have a wide mix of cool stuff. The price tags ain't cheap but window shoppin's fun.

Melissa B.

Yelp
It's taken me years to write this review because I was shocked at how I was treated and it still irks me till this day. Very rude and disrespectful. I was treated as if they were "better" than me. It seems like other people on here find them rude as well.

Yelp
Too bad the lady is such a grinch cause the owner is really a cool guy. Turned off from buying anything this time around after her foul mood. Have shopped with them for 10 years otherwise.

Scott W.

Yelp
Unfortunate customer service. Lady working went out of her way to be unnecessarily rude.

Trevor B.

Yelp
The owner is extremely rude, and not considerate of her customers what so ever. Everything in the store feels and looks cheap. The store was dirty and disorganized, not to mention smelled like retirement home bedding. Ive seen much nicer home goods at Goodwill, and have had much better shopping experiences their as well. Strongly do not recommend.

Yelp
Surfing Cowboy's is a great shop on Venice Boulevard. It's more like a 5o's Danish-California-50's Furniture-Curio Shop than a grommet trolling surf shop that reeks of Mr. Zogg's and stale beer. As mentioned they have 50's era furniture and housewares, vintage surfboards and skateboards, plus all kind of crazy stuff like vintage skimboards and vaguely clandestine Vespa interests. It's a great place to browse, as well as outfit your Venice beach shack. Scout is friendly and seems genuinely interested in locating that hard to find item. Definitely the locals only attitude is NOT present here, another indicator that you're not in a crusty surf shop. The prices aren't bargain, but the merch is exotic and hard to find. I figure, if you want want a deal then you do the footwork. So I'm not remotely put out by the prices. But don't be surprised by a hefty price tag for that Rosewood Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. All in all a great spot if you are into Pacific Ocean culture.

Yelp
This store is awesome! The right hand side has furniture and larger pieces while the left hand side has apparel including boots and tee shirts. They have mens, womens, and childrens shirts with a variety of one of a kind designs and colors from standard heather grey to bright yellow. They have books on surfing (obviously) and prints/wall hangings. The owners and staff are approachable, friendly, and laid back. They gift wrapped my tee shirts I am giving as gifts for my family really tightly since I am shipping them back to the East Coast. I love thoughtfulness like that! Whether you are a surfer or not you are sure to find something good. I saw the funniest sign that was discontinued but is an actual sign from New Mexico. It read: PLEASE KEEP ANIMALS AND CHILDREN IN THE CAR. Ha. If it wasn't $ 150 and so heavy I'd buy it and hang it on my wall, alas I'm a lowly renter and the plaster can barely hold a lightweight picture let alone a former road sign.

Yelp
I love this place! Moreso for looking around and getting inspired to design then actually buying anything. The owners are super nice, and if you have any questions about an item in the store they'll invite you to sit and talk to you about the history, where they got it, how they refinished/reupholstered it and answer any other questions. Even though my boyfriend and I had no intention of buying anything, it was awesome just to talk to these guys. There are placards that give a background story on almost every item. I can see how each piece would be a great conversation starter with these guys. Definitely have a chat with them if it's not too busy, and hopefully you'll feel inspired too!

Yelp
This is a great store to find some unique gifts and decor. The owner and the sales person were very friendly when I was in there. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Surfing memorabilia, including vintage surf & skateboards. Also Hawaiian collectibles, vintage posters & nice mid-century modern furnishings. Some good history and nostalgia here & a must-see for every surfer or wanna-be. It was enjoyable even for a non-surfer like me. Very unique.

Kelli N.

Yelp
The prices are what you'd expect from a well curated retail store. If you're looking for flea market prices, go to a flea market and spend 5 hours digging through junk to find a gem (which I love on the right day). However, i popped in on a Saturday and was greeted warmly by the owners and the super cute sales person. I picked up a Native American turquoise ring for way less than I have seen them at the Rose Bowl. It is chunky and different than most I've seen. Perfect place to buy a gift for the person who has everything. And all the stuff you can't afford is at least fun to look at :) Worth a visit. Plenty of parking in the back

Yelp
Not once, but twice, the Cowboys have dropped out of the sky like angels and rescued me when last-minute shopping for birthday gifts. In both instances I couldn't have been more lucky to have remembered this place literally while on way to the parties. The staff are Uber helpful, and made it fun. I could not suggest a better place to pop in for that perfect gift or token for that special person. Thank you Cowboy for making me look like a star.

Yelp
Too overpriced for refurbished furniture. The chat the female owner was even way more off putting. I hate this place. Too bad I couldn't give this store a negative zero rating.

Yelp
When Vesuvio Gallery go touring we allways end up at some point in Abbot Kinney and Surfing Cowboys... Without doubt my favourite store on earth.. The perfect Californian beach vibe and great vintage furniture, clothing, vintage items, and knick nacks.. Great friendly staff also.. Then pop down to the "Other Rooms" for great beers and food.... Also check our website with contemporary artwork and photography from global contributors.. www.vesuviogallery.com

Yelp
Way overpriced California nonsense. This place is like a thrift store with super jacked up prices. Owners are total snobs. We were asking about a mid-century table to compliment our chairs -- they actually referred to our mid century chairs as "starter collection mid century". Snooty jerks. But let me say I've been in a buncha times and I'm not just giving 1 star because of their insulting comments; I'm giving one star because this store is full of junk but you're going to pay top dollar for it because they say it's cool -- and that's the most annoying elitist thing I can thing of for a used furniture shop. Annoying!

Suzy D.

Yelp
love surfing cowboys !!!! i'm a long time fan of surf culture + mid-century furniture !! they have it all !! so many super cool collectibles that fit into my boho -modern-chic esthetic !! the owners are a lovely couple that are welcoming & love what they do !! at least leave with one of their fab t-shirts if you don't walk out with a vintage surfboard or poster !! xo 'malibu suzy'

oh yeah .... ..

Yelp
cool stuff .... although not as cool as some of the other places on Abbot Kinney ... but oh my god ... so overpriced .... holy smoke ... even with gas prices ... stick to estate sales .... i mean these stores basically are for those with really thick wallets who have no time to look for themselves .... oh wait a second ... maybe the reason my wallet is thin .... is i spent too much time looking .... eek ....

Yelp
Have you ever walked into a shop and kept thinking "If I only had the money..."? Well, place made me groan this several times. Just the collection of vintage longboards alone was drool worthy. I felt kind of bad just eye molesting the items and apologized for being a Brokey McBrokestuffs, but the guy understood and encouraged looking and dreaming, and dream and drool I did. Their vintage surf boards and skateboards were just awesome. So basically, I plan to be back. I won't always be a Brokey McBrokestuffs, and when I get back to being a Marsha Moneybags, I will definitely be hitting this place up. :)

Yelp
So I first contacted the store via email. They had a flag that I really wanted on their website. I got a quick response saying they still had the flag. In fact they actually had two. When I got to the store Jezz was super helpful. I got the flag I was searching for at a really good price and she even recommended a framer to me that I actually used to get it framed! I couldn't be happier with the price, service, and product I got. Thanks Jezz!

Yelp
I found the perfect Venice souvenir for my boyfriend in this fun shop. The staff was very friendly when I needed help picking out a size and they encouraged us to look around and enjoy the rest of the store.

Yelp
As I walked in, I mentioned that "I am a surfing cowboy." This is true to the bone, as I have been surfing for 20 years, and have a fetish with Cowboy stuff over the years. I actually came there because I was looking for some ding repair stuff for my surfboard. Thinking that they would be at least a partial surf shoppe, I figured that that might have it. They did not. I ended up taking a look at some of their "Cowboy" stuff, which included some vintage pocket knives with abalone, and some topaz stone pendents and jazz. No belt buckles whatsoever. No bolo neck ties whatsoever. There might have been a few cowboy hats around. So on the cowboy level they get 2 stars. I then took a look at a vintage bellyboard that was probably over double my age. It was remarkably well preserved. There are also some other very cool looking surfboards there. So the surfing gets a 4 star. By the way, I'm not even holding it against them that they did not have my ding repair stuff. One of the sales guys was pretty nice, like a 4 star, and the other was kinda a "too busy for the customer" type, like a 3 star. So overall it's 3 star.

Yelp
Surfing cowboys is a little pricey but they have some amazing hard to find vintage surf and beach gear. Great place to pop in for a browse never know what treasure you may find.

chez j.

Yelp
all show and poor quality. you won't be disappointed if you treat it more like a museum than a furniture store. the way the furniture is staged in the store is brilliant and makes you want to buy everything, but when you get it home, you notice things like--hey, the legs of this monkey wood table are loose and weak, and these $1200 danish chairs were spray painted unevenly. we bought several pieces from here (at a serious premium) that fell apart within the year --with very minimal use. no returns, and no help from the staff in getting your stuff fixed when it crumbles in front of your eyes. so, buyer beware. know that you are overpaying for something that is meant to look good from afar, but watch out if you have any intention of using your furniture in your day to day life.

Scott K.

Yelp
Being a skateboarder for over 25 years and a surfer for about half that, I was intrigued by this store. Walked in and saw a ton of vintage skate stuff which I was stoked on. Saw some pricey "vintage" Rose Bowl finds. I didn't expect stuff to be cheap since it was on AK. BUT, what I really didn't expect was the rude "no photography" rule I was told about when the lady ran back to spout off while I was shooting photos of skateboards on the wall. If you are so worried about people taking pictures of something like that, then don't sell it. Basically you are cashing in on something that you don't do or support in any sense. I am not being an elitist here but you didn't earn it. I don't know what you think I might "steal" from you image wise but I am appreciating something you can't comprehend. Its a bummer that you'll continue to pull the wool over consumers eyes selling your "vintage stuff" but you can't even decifer the difference between a real skateboarder appreciating history and a kook acting like they do. Let the skaters support skateboarding. You're out of your element.
