Surprise Corner Viewpoint

It was great that the Viewpoint was open and the parking lot was cleared in the winter. I had a great view of the famous hotel cuddled in the evergreen trees. The surrounding snow-capped mountains were breathtaking. The cold air was so refreshing. I enjoyed it. The stairs were covered by the snow and were quite slippery. Be mindful when you walk down.

Named for its spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, Bow Falls and the historic Fairmont Banff Springs hotel from Buffalo Street , Surprise Corner is an excellent place for photos and also to start a hike on the local trail system. The impressive view makes it clear why the Fairmont Banff Springs was built in this exact location in the national park. There is a small parking lot located on the opposite side of the street from the viewing platform from which another hiking trail also leads up to the Hoodos Viewpoint – another great spot for even better views!

This was a great viewpoint. It’s a decent walk from downtown and you can pass by many views on the side. Once you get to the actual viewpoint, you get a good view of the hotel and of the river below. We visited in the winter and it was amazing! 🤩 Overall, very cool place!

Ok, this place was a total surprise as a viewpoint. Its name is spot on. Incredible view of the hotel. The hike up from bow river bridge has moderate challenges for a day hike. It will get your heart pumping. You can either walk the road up or do the trail for part of the way up. Lots of places to stop and take photos along the way.

Getting here is ready but there are only 8 parking spots. We went by here several times and there are always about 20 cars trying to park on this blind corner, it's a mess and very dangerous so please tell the tourists to park legally and do not let them block traffic or stop on the road way. The view is only OK. You can see the Fairmont, the mountain and if you walk up the road you can see some of the falls. The road drops off here quickly so be careful walking, 1 rock that move could put you over the side with a 100 meter drop into the icy waters below. Unless you like that kind of adventure. There is no repelling or climbing here but great place to try if you can get parking. The view point is across the street. There are no seats and no wash rooms. You will see the beautiful Fairmont hotel view from the other side. Good place to stop for the picture.
