Surprise Corner Viewpoint

Named for its spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, Bow Falls and the historic Fairmont Banff Springs hotel from Buffalo Street , Surprise Corner is an excellent place for photos and also to start a hike on the local trail system. The impressive view makes it clear why the Fairmont Banff Springs was built in this exact location in the national park. There is a small parking lot located on the opposite side of the street from the viewing platform from which another hiking trail also leads up to the Hoodos Viewpoint – another great spot for even better views!

It was great that the Viewpoint was open and the parking lot was cleared in the winter. I had a great view of the famous hotel cuddled in the evergreen trees. The surrounding snow-capped mountains were breathtaking. The cold air was so refreshing. I enjoyed it. The stairs were covered by the snow and were quite slippery. Be mindful when you walk down.

The panoramic view of the surrounding landscape is simply unforgettable. You can see winding rivers, majestic mountains, and the charming architecture below. Every direction offers a picture-perfect scene, and the light changes beautifully throughout the day — early morning mist brings a calm, dreamy vibe, while sunset turns the whole place golden and alive. It’s a photographer’s dream and a soul-soothing escape for anyone who loves nature. What makes “Surprise Corner” extra special is the feeling it gives — that little spark of wonder you get when the world suddenly feels bigger and more beautiful than you expected. It’s quiet enough to feel personal, yet open enough to share with others without losing its magic. The area is clean, easy to access, and well-marked, with a few benches to sit and soak in the moment. If you’re visiting nearby attractions or just driving through, make sure to stop here — even for a few minutes. I left “Surprise Corner” with a full heart and a smile — truly a five-star experience that proves the best surprises often come when you least expect them.

This was a great viewpoint. It’s a decent walk from downtown and you can pass by many views on the side. Once you get to the actual viewpoint, you get a good view of the hotel and of the river below. We visited in the winter and it was amazing! 🤩 Overall, very cool place!

Ok, this place was a total surprise as a viewpoint. Its name is spot on. Incredible view of the hotel. The hike up from bow river bridge has moderate challenges for a day hike. It will get your heart pumping. You can either walk the road up or do the trail for part of the way up. Lots of places to stop and take photos along the way.

You will see the beautiful Fairmont hotel view from the other side. Good place to stop for the picture.

Surprise Corner Viewpoint is hands down one of the most spectacular scenic spots in Banff! The panoramic views from here are absolutely breathtaking, featuring the majestic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel (often called the "Banff Castle") perched dramatically above the picturesque Bow River valley and ravine. The sight of this grand château-style hotel against the rugged Canadian Rockies backdrop is nothing short of magical. What makes this viewpoint even more remarkable is the layered scenery - you can see the Banff Gondola gracefully ascending Sulphur Mountain in the distance behind the castle, creating a perfect composition that captures multiple iconic Banff attractions in one frame. The contrast between the elegant architecture of the historic hotel and the raw natural beauty of the surrounding wilderness is truly captivating. This spot is ideal for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Whether you're here for sunrise, sunset, or any time of day, the views are consistently spectacular. It's easily accessible and offers ample space for taking photos and simply soaking in the scenery. While the views are incredible, please exercise extreme caution if you're tempted to venture closer to the ravine for a different angle. The area near the edge has loose gravel that can be very slippery, and there's a significant drop-off that could be extremely dangerous. Several visitors have had close calls here, so it's best to enjoy the amazing views from the designated safe viewing areas. Despite the need for caution, this viewpoint is an absolute must-see when visiting Banff. The memories and photos you'll take from here will last a lifetime.

Good viewing point for the river and hotel but unfortunately the viewing platform was shut for maintenance when we came in late September 2025. There are still decent views from down the road. Parking is difficult but can free up quickly with people coming and going - please don’t park on blind corners!
