22 Best Things to Do in Sydney

"With its tree-fringed Victorian terrace houses, sociable bars and cafés, and stylish independent stores, Surry Hills is a magnet for creative types and one of the inner city’s most charming neighborhoods. Visitors will get a sense of how Sydneysiders live here, whether that’s sipping matcha lattes at cafés such as the iconic Bills, sinking a craft beer at a pub, or just walking the dog. For a culture fix, head to the Brett Whiteley Studio, once home to the rebellious late Australian artist. It’s easy to stroll around Surry Hills, which is part of its appeal." - Sophie Davies

Surry Hills — Neighborhood Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Let’s start big picture. What’s the vibe here? With its tree-fringed Victorian terrace houses, sociable bars and cafés, and stylish independent stores, Surry Hills is a magnet for creative types and one of the inner city’s most charming neighborhoods. Visitors will get a sense of how Sydneysiders live here, whether that’s sipping matcha lattes at cafés such as iconic Bills , sinking a craft beer at a pub, or just walking the dog. Any standout features or must-sees? For a memorable culture fix, head for the Brett Whiteley Studio , once home to the rebellious late Australian artist. A former T-shirt factory, this compact space houses Whiteley’s living quarters upstairs and exhibitions of his stunning paintings and sculptures on the ground floor (Thursday to Sunday only). It’s handy for cult Bourke Street Bakery  or pop to cozy café Royale Specialty, perfect for people watching. Was it easy to get around? It’s easy to stroll around Surry Hills, which is part of its appeal. Wander down main artery Crown Street, between Oxford and Cleveland streets, dotted with independent cafés, bars, restaurants, and shops. Then, meander back up the parallel drag Bourke Street or fan out into nearby cross streets. Small park Shannon Reserve has benches and hosts the Surry Hills Markets on the first Saturday of the month. Larger Prince Alfred Park tempts swimmers with a heated outdoor pool flanked by yellow sun umbrellas and sloping lawns. All said and done, what—and who—is this best for? While away a blissful afternoon in Surry Hills, shopping at original boutiques such as The Standard Store for international fashion labels or Hay Shop and Mud for contemporary homewares. Then hit up gourmet cafés such as Cuckoo Callay for lunch or funky pan-Asian restaurant Chin Chin for dinner. Eileen’s Bar upstairs at gin distillery Four Pillars Laboratory is your go-to for cocktails. Some of the city’s best boutique hotels are also here, including former film studios Paramount House Hotel , part of a design-savvy hub including a café, wine bar, gym, and retro cinema. What’s not to like?" - Sophie Davies
