An Unforgettable Sushi Experience in Vancouver Dining here was truly spectacular. Each dish was a work of art—beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The service was outstanding, with staff who were attentive, friendly, and made us feel genuinely welcome. This is easily one of the best sushi restaurants in Vancouver. If you're celebrating a special occasion like an anniversary, I highly recommend this place. The atmosphere is elegant yet comfortable, making it perfect for creating lasting memories.

Definitely one of the best omakase I’ve been to in vancouver. It is a very intimate session, Kevin was so engaging and so passionate about the food and makes the session so unique. He was able to bring the guests together, we even started engaging in conversation with other guest at the table. The food is spectacular, the way the flavours are placed together felt like art. Kevin definitely placed a lot of thought when he created all the dishes. Warning it was not cheap, definitely not for the average diner but I still recommend coming here for a very special occasion.

I was super excited to try this place. It was amazing!!! Kevin was very professional and had explained every dish of what it was and how to eat it. He was also very observant that I didn't eat green onions (quite embarrassing for me 🤣), and he had asked if it was okay. 💓 We had tried the sakura omakase, which was more of a tasting menu. There was 8 settings at the sushi bar, half chose the sakura omakase and the other half chose the regular omakase. Everything was VERY fresh. Kevin exhibited his expertise with pride. I would definitely go back and try their regular omakase menu for sure.

JMT! Kevin was so amazing! Such a nice guy and very skilled in his craft. We really want to learn how he makes his tamago. Would def recommend and was the best omakase experience I’ve had in van.

Google
So fun to try omakase! Was an intimate setting at the bar with chef making the sushi in front of you and telling you what each dish is. You have to make a reservation for omakase!

We had such a lovely time at Sushi Bar Shu for their omakase service. The attention to detail was spectacular - from service, to ambiance, and to the food. The service is very intimate and it’s amazing to watch the chef work. We had some truly memorable bites from appetizers through the sushi course and dessert. I highly recommend the wagyu add-on- it was the perfect way to end the savory course of the meal. We’ll definitely be back!

It was my birthday weekend and my partner took us here for an omakase experience. Kevin and his associates was so good at their job! Food was delicious, presentation on point. At first they can come up a bit quiet but as the night flow, our food and conversation get more interesting. Will definitely recommend Shu Sushi to our family and friends ❤️❤️❤️❤️ P/S: at the moment they are not serving alcohol so if you are looking to have a drink while enjoying your food. You may bring your drink from outside and pay a small fee.

Since 2019, this is still my favourite omakase place :) Lots of good memory here with my family and friends. Chef Kevin always remember me and Mai is very attentive. It’s always nice to go back and see that some staff remained there. Service is friendly and attentive. Music was a tiny bit too loud for me last time around but I still enjoyed my experience there. I love the overall flavour profile here, quality is always great! :)

Yelp
10/10 experience! This is the best omakase I have had so far in a long time. I was so blown away by all the courses I ate. There was not a single dish that let me down. It's hard to pick a favorite because they were all so good. I appreciated head chef, Kevin's, thorough walk through of each course. Would definitely be returning. The ambience is nice and intimate. Service was great as well. No complaints, will be returning for sure.

Yelp
This was my first omakase experience and I had such a wonderful time here! We were the first to arrive for our lunch seating and had a nice chat with the chef. He was super friendly and easy to talk to. As others have mentioned, the space is very intimate with just a row of bar seats. We opted for the lunch menu, which felt like a much better deal than dinner. The actual food was very fresh and delicious. Although the chef explained every piece, I got very lost, but I did appreciate how everything tasted. Some of his friends were also there that day and the chatter made the experience feel a lot more fun and casual. He was also so kind by including everyone when he wanted to offer an additional piece for his friends. The service was great overall. The staff were super attentive the whole time, always refilling the tea. They also don't rush you at all and even allow you to sit for a bit after the meal is complete.

Yelp
We came on a weekend afternoon for their lunch menu and arrived at a seating of around 7 people. The interior is quiet and tranquil. Aside from the bar seating, there is a private table at the back which I suppose is used for dinner service or for special guests. At the beginning of each item, the chef would introduce what it is before serving it.The food quality was solid and everything tasted fresh. I found the wasabi in the nigiri a little too strong for me personally, but I enjoyed the glaze they put on some of the nigiri, which had a hint of yuzu? flavour. Service was attentive and tea was topped off, which one would expect since there were only 7 diners. Aside from the food in terms of dining experience, I wish there was more interaction between the chef and the guests. There was a regular diner and the chef mainly interacted with his friend. It would have been nice to get more interaction with the chef. The regular diner also got a couple of extra pieces, which we understand was reasonable considering their relationship, but it was slightly awkward because no one else were served those pieces. Overall, the price is decent for the quality and amount of food - you leave satisfied, but not full. I understand that not everyone likes interaction with the chef, but in an intimate setting more personal engagement would have been preferred for me.

Yelp
10/10 for a fantastic and wholesome omakase experience. Best in the city for sure! Chef Kevin and his team use quality ingredients, and really have an amazing menu. Perfect for special occasions, birthdays, or just a date night!

Yelp
I want to start off by saying I really wanted to love it but there were several things that took away from the experience. The omakase experience itself is pretty intimate (6 counter seats). The chef of the night was Brian. There were 3 parties at our seating. From the start, Brian served one of the parties different food than us and continued to do so throughout the night as it turns out they were his friends and "regulars". It was really distracting as during omakase everyone is typically served at similar times and the same item with introductions. However Brian seemed to shift his focus especially halfway through the meal exclusively on his friends, asking for feedback, if they wanted more food, and of course serving them pieces that the rest of us did not receive. Towards the end of the dinner, his other chef ended up taking over serving because Brian was so focused on his friends. There were even times when they didn't explain what was being served. It would have been a better overall experience had he just wanted til the end to serve his friends or have their own tasting session. I'm not a hater, but if I'm paying for this experience, it should not be so distracting there's only 6 customers! Looking at a review earlier this month, it seems to be a common sentiment. Overall the food was slightly above average, experience aside and just talking about the fish there weren't too many pieces that were extraordinary or special in their seasoning/preparation. I couldn't even name one that I liked in particular. Having tried a good variety of omakase experiences, this was kind of disappointing. Especially at the $188 price point, I expected more. We did appreciate that they gave us free caviar for our anniversary.

Yelp
Wanted an Omakase experience while visiting Vancouver and decided on trying Sushi Bar Shu. Dinner was relaxing with only six patrons at the sushi bar. Pacing was good and sushi chef Kevin was super friendly and engaging. Really enjoyed some of the presentation of the dishes. The star for me was probably the hotate with yuzu and shiso sorbet. The shari tasted a little mild for me; I wish it had more vinegar than it did. Definitely a good date night or celebration dinner. A bit out of the way if you are staying in downtown Vancouver, but also glad to see other parts of the city.

Yelp
We went for lunch this weekend at this well "respected" restaurant, something they just started as a way to attract more price conscious customers. Their set menu for lunch is $88 per person. We believe for dinner is above $200 per person. The quality of the food is just OK, not much better than the quality of fish you get at your corner sushi shops everywhere. The chef, Kevin, decided to serve the Hamachi with the blood portion of the meat attached. We wished that he would offer us an option to include this blood portion or not. For the uninitiated diners, this restaurant should be OK. For us, it was a disappointment. The service was good however. Our cups of tea were always full.

Yelp
This place is amazing for a traditional yet fun omakase experience. From the fried lobster to the cuttlefish to the horse mackerel to the dessert - 10/10. The staff was professional and friendly. The food was fresh and clean. The vibes were immaculate. Eat here for a lovely meal.

Yelp
10/10! Best omakase experience! From the moment we stepped foot in the door until the moment we finished our meal. Owner/Chef Kevin and his staff were extremely attentive and friendly during our experience. Super fresh and tasty. 100% recommended.

Yelp
We went to Sushi Bar Shu on Saturday 27th May with a booking which we failed to confirm. Luckily for us one couple volunteered to let us have their seats since they are old customers. I must say we are not only lucky but also blessed. We enjoyed not only the food and the ambiance but also the generosity of the guests and the owner Kevin. I am particularly grateful because I am from out of town and that's my last weekend in Vancouver. Thank you for all of the nice people out there. Thank you Vancouver. Thank you Kevin. I am sure we will be back again.

Yelp
Disappointed taste and overpriced. I'm a super fun of itamae sushi and I have lots of experience of eating this. The menu of this price itamae sushi shouldn't be this simple and contains a miso soup taste beyond the standard of a Japanese fast food restautant. Two kinds of fish tastes not fresh enough. The server washed all the utensils before the customers which makes me feel I'm eating in someone's kitchen: mass and noisy.

Yelp
I just received a call regarding the cancellation of my reservation for Saturday night. We didn't make the three day window, to cancel without paying the 'deposit'. I will be charged $416 or receive a credit for a reservation, my 17 yr. old daughter made. we had planned to go to BC this weekend, we live in Seattle. Unfortunately my daughter has multiple sclerosis and has been suffering from a severe headache the last couple of days, along with other symptoms which are preventing us from making the trip. When I explained this, I was asked if I have any friends in the area that could take my reservation and pay me for it. Again, we live in Seattle and have no idea when we will make it to the area. The person who called, kept repeating the cancellation policy. I understand, but one doesn't always fit one. Beware! If you make a reservation here and your plans change, you will be charged the full price of the meal. Saturday night, when I am home, knowing we are missing out on a get away we were looking forward to, and concerned my daughter's health, I will have know it is costing me $416.

Yelp
I'll keep this short and simple. Sushi Bar Shu is one of my favourite omakase restaurants of all time. I'm honestly upset I can't afford to eat here every day. The quality of ingredients and attention to preparation is immaculate. I am beyond impressed by the ingredient pairings with each cut of fish. The flavours are not your traditional pairings it has a more contemporary twist. I would also recommend getting the A5 Miyazaki Wagyu to share. Let's also not forget about the exceptional customer service. I was flying in from Toronto to celebrate my 6th-anniversary with my significant other. Unfortunately, when I was making arrangements for my trip, the restaurant was booked up for the whole month!!! Luckily, I was able to get in touch with Kevin who had nicely provided me with a timeslot for my anniversary dinner because we would have definitely missed out (Thanks Kevin!). My only unfavourable moment was that we arrived later than expected due to road closure from a vehicle collision and the team kindly refused to serve the Miyazaki Wagyu as they did not want us to rush through the service. In the end, we did get the Wagyu served but it did take a bit of convincing. I don't think my overall experience was ruined at all. All and all, a great experience for the price point and would return again!

Yelp
If you like Sushi and you want Omakase, Sushi Bar Shu is a MUST TRY. The experience was AMAZING and you will not regret it! Food - I can't say enough good things about the quality of the food here. It was SO good. We couldn't help but smile throughout the whole meal. There were things I thought I didn't like before coming, like liver, or uni. But I had it here, and I am a changed person. It was SO creamy and so delicious. The liver had no grittiness. Chef Kevin explained the reason behind that is because of the way the food was processed/handled and of course, the freshness of the ingredient. Seriously, don't be swayed because you think there will be a couple of items that you don't like on the menu. Sushi Bar Shu will make you love it after you try it! Service - The Chef Kevin and all the other Chefs are absolutely amazing. They provided the best service and gave us the best experience. They are so attentive to every single detail - down to whether or not you use your left or right hand to eat. I will say that you have to book quite far in advance to get a spot! So if you're thinking about it for a special date or event, plan a couple of months ahead to get a table!!

Yelp
Decided to treat ourselves as we heard great things about Sushi Bar Shu and boy were we impressed! Not only was Kevin (owner) and Brian very hospitably and friendly, but they surprised us with a couple extra treats which you will see in the photos attached. **WARNING** - you will be drooling after looking at the photos. Due to COVID-19, spots are limited so I recommend booking in advance online. You will have to put down a deposit so make sure you choose wisely. There are times at 6pm and 8pm so we decided to go with the 6pm seating. Traffic around that time on Granville can be hectic, so plan ahead as you can find parking along the side streets. As they don't have a liquor license, plan ahead as you are allowed to BYOB. As it's a seasonal omakase menu, we had the choice of paying extra for A5 Miyazaki wagyu and caviar. You also get a choice of a daily Okonomi sushi option which was o-toro. In terms of the food and quality, there's not much I can say as the photos will speak for themselves. Everything was incredible! From the attention to detail, explanations, friendly service and ambiance, this is a great place for a celebration or date night. Overall, I highly recommend this place and would definitely come back again! Thank you Kevin and Brian for the amazing experience :)

Yelp
I am a seafood enthusiast but (surprisingly) it was my first time trying omakase. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate. The entire restaurant had 3-4 staff members for a bar that seats 6 (two chefs and one or two waitresses/cleaners). The staff were all friendly, polite and professional. They only have two slots available per day so it is important to reserve far in advance. All of the food was thoughtfully made with attention to detail. I really enjoyed how no flavours were too strong but instead complimentary to each other. Even the appetizers and dessert were delicious. I, also, appreciated how the portions were small enough for us to try a lot of variety without feeling overwhelmed. Tips: arrive on time. A couple of people arrived late which I found to be quite disrespectful as the chefs were going at a certain pace for the rest of the customers and then had to cater to those who were late. Keep your conversations quiet and don't wear obnoxious perfume. Me and my boyfriend rate the atmosphere, food and service a 5/5. Good price for the service and quality received.

Yelp
This is one of the best omakase places in Vancouver. The service is excellent and the chefs are very friendly and describe the dishes very well. We ordered the "expensive" set which added an appetizer, some sashimi pieces and dessert. We also added an A5 Wagyu option for $86. Everything was delicious. I enjoyed the bluefin tuna the most but that's not to say anything was wrong with the other pieces. The Wagyu was absolutely delicious. We will be back for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
It was not the best experience. The food was good but over priced even this year. The staffs were polite. But the chef enjoys very much only talking to his favorite table and rarely communicate to the other tables. They don't serve any alcohol and you need to serve yourself water/tea. Went to a couple of omakase restaurants in the States and Canada before, this experience is rarely a good one. Won't recommend to friends.

Mary W.

Yelp
Amazing food! Ambiance was beautiful. Lots of variety in terms of omakase and not just nigiri. Everything tasted and looked refined. Highly recommended

Yelp
Amazing omakase experience!! Chef Kevin was attentive and gave us alot of insight into the dishes he prepared for us. Service was good and the experience reminded us of japan!

Abby Z.

Yelp
Completely shocked by Kevin's service. He said he is the owner but I still can't believe it as the owner wouldn't treat their customers as such. You would expect at least reasonable services at an omakase restaurant, but I walked out feeling extremely scared, almost in tears. First of all, I was sorry to be 10 mins late as I need to settle my 2 year old with grandparents who came back late from outside. Thats my bad, but things do happen in life especially with a 2 year old. Once I sat down while waiting for my husband to walk in, Kevin put all the sushi pieces right in front of me while my husband was still parking. I asked whether he could wait, and whether he had to serve all the pieces all at once (cuz for omakase you want them to be freshly made rather than a sushi box), he said he needs to. When I said oh it's not how other omakase places do things, Kevin gave me a really bad look and said it is how we do things here, implying take it or leave it. Up till this point, there is no greeting no smile nothing. I was very taken back by his attitude, and asked, can I then cancel my reservation the? Kevin then said you can cancel but you will still get charged. I couldn't believe it, then asked what he meant, you can serve sushi all at once but can you be nicer to me? Kevin then said I would be nice to me if you are nice. He then just kicked me out of the restaurant saying I am not welcomed. I am sorry for being 10 mins late (11:45 reservation, I got there 11:55), but Kevin, do you think this is how you should treat your customers? Your customers can't even ask a few questions? I asked him what's his name and whether he is the owner as I just can't believe it, he told me his name is Kevin and he is the owner. Kevin, maybe you were having a bad day, but please don't do this to other customers. It won't get you a long way, especially as a sushi omakase chef.

Priscilla H.

Yelp
We went here for our anniversary. Chef Kevin was very easy going and really took the time to chat with us during our meal. We enjoyed every single dish that Chef Kevin offered during our omakase. Every piece of fish/seafood was delicious and fresh. I enjoyed the intimate seating of 8 as it made the experience more unique and guest focused.

Yelp
Valentine's Day during COVID is quite a different experience dining at Sushi Bar Shu. Limited seating so my hubby made reservations waaay ahead of time. Only 6 seats at the sushi bar with plexiglass dividers between parties. Omakase includes a variety of dishes: 3 appetizer size of saw seafood, 3 appetizers, 12 made in front of you sushi, 1 miso soup, 1 tamago egg, and 1 dessert. This omakase comes with more than just sushi, and I appreciate Chef Kevin put the thought in creating the menu. Starting with the chawamushi that was so flavored with the dashi (stock), the consistency was perfect, not too watery and just solidify enough to taste both the egg and dashi. I really love the dashi, really well made! The 3 raw fish starters were very delicious, each was perfectly paired with its own special sauce to bring out the freshness of the unique fish taste, absolutely heavenly! ChuToro was soo very fatty that my lips were soo glossy!! Out of the 3 appetizer, the braised beef tongue stood out for me cos it was so very tender, I didn't mind kiss it other than my husband tonight. When it comes to the sushi, Chef Kevin hand presses the sushi rice each and everyone of them in front of you with different seafood on top. A few of them were paired with specialty salt and citrus juice or yuzu zest to compliment the seafood, and amplify the unique taste of each of the seafood. Personally, I absolutely enjoyed the hamachi with fresh yuzu zest and the ChuToro. Out of the 12 pieces, only 2 pieces were paired with specialty salt and citru, and the rest were brushed with soy sauce. In the future, I hope to see Chef Kevin can play with more specialty salt and the seafood to enhance flavors. For example, pair with different kind of specify salts, other exotic fruits/veggie. Just to stimulate the palette. The one thing I love most is the sushi rice! Yes, the rice! The temperature was just warm, not room temperature but warmer, very so slightly marinated with vinegar and mirin. Chef Kevin is very skillful when hand pressing the sushi rice, everyone of the sushi I picked by hand, yes, hand not chopsticks, I can feel the sushi rice were nicely held together very so lightly and not mushed. Chef Kevin has the perfect pressure that when I hold onto my sushi, none of the rice fell off! As for the tamago, it was sooo delicious!! Dense on the bottom and bubbly fluffy on top~~ We also ordered the A5 Miyazaki Wagyu to share on top of the omakase, it was soooo worth it!!Burst of juice and fat in every bite into the wagyu steak! Enjoy every piece of it! The dessert was absolutely perfect!! It's a shiso sorbet with shiso jelly on the bottom with a shiso flower on top. Shiso usually use as a palette cleanser and capturing that light refreshing taste and turn it into an icy sorbet was just genius! Love it so much!! Definitely will come back for more!! The tamago was very delicious!!

Yelp
In light of COVID-19 Pandemic and the orders to remain at home and physical distancing. We recognize that many businesses are suffering. We wanted to do our part to support our local businesses during this time. We aren't ordering in as often. But we are tying to be supportive of our city and business community. So we do order in for our family from time to time. Thank you to all of the restaurants and chefs and cooks and all those who work tirelessly still within the food industry providing food for the city and dining options (ordering out). So today. We decided to order from Shu. They had these sashimi and uni dishes that were soooo good! Again. Shu is on the more expensive side of dining. But their fish is fresh, and imported from Japan. Once in a while. Their food is worth the price. But can't recommend going there or ordering from there on a regular basis. We had the uni dish. And they offered six reasonable sized uni's with mixed white and brown rice and some vegetables. It was gloriously fantastic. My wife had the mixed sashimi dish and that was equally as satisfying. They were well worth their price for what type of seafood they were offering. Highly recommended! Give it a try! We've been here for the dine in before the pandemic. And they're still open during the pandemic but only ordering take out. No dining in option which is pretty standard these days with all of the restaurants in our city. Shu is one of the few restaurants that has decided to remain open during these challenging times.

Yelp
Nice modern space with warm hospitality and service. Most of the food was very tasty and well done. The very fishy serving of herring Nigiri near the end, instead of something like anago, was a bit of a poor finish to the main portion of the dining. On the other hand, the desert was very enjoyable even though it was small. In general, portions and cuts of Nigiri were quite small. We had a beer and a spicy cucumber salad at another restaurant waiting as an appetizer, and after dining here, we stopped at two other restaurants to finish enough of a progressive dinner to be full. The point is they don't serve you very much and the meal isn't very filling. It makes one question overall value. Chef Kevin was unfortunately not there when we visited, but the other chefs still did a good job despite the previous concerns.

Yelp
Sushi Bar Shu has been one of the restaurants my husband and I have been eyeing since it opened in hopes to try their omakase. And with the current covid situation we decided to try them out for take out as we have been seeing some pretty amazing reviews and drool worthy post of their bowls! Their take out lives up to their reputation for quality sashimi. We ordered the Uni & Ikura Don + Negitoro Hand-roll Don + Chirashi Don. Everything was super fresh and we absolutely loved the uni and negitoro! They are so creamy and just melts in your mouth... we made sure we savoured every single bite.

Yelp
I've been meaning to check this place out due to all the rave reviews and I'm glad I finally did! We opted for the $98 omakase option and added the A5 wagyu. Everything was really delicious. The execution of each dish also flowed nicely and at a good pace. The chefs had great attention to detail and always kept us informed on what we were about to enjoy. In terms of portion, it is on the smaller side but I'm a fan! The fish to rice ratio is perfectly balanced, and the sushi rice was at the perfect temperature. I don't think I have any complaints! There wasn't a dish that I didn't enjoy. Really loved the fresh flavours of yuzu paired with certain pieces of nigiri. I definitely think that the highlight of the night was the melt in your mouth A5 wagyu! It was definitely reminiscent of Japan. Glad I have another spot to add to my list of favourite omakase spots in Van!

Yelp
Very intimate dining experience with impeccable service. The omakase course menu is amazing and highly recommended for any special occasion.

Yelp
It's been years since I've had "decent" sushi -this place comes closest to what I'd get occasionally in Japan while living there. Usually I just eat kaiten sushi which is more economical for about $10-15. I'm glad the quality of Japanese cuisine in vancouver has come this far Interestingly enough this place has an all Korean staff so service style is a little different because the culture is different but quality of service and food is top notch. -Omakase only is their main style -Sushi Bar Shu on granville street Highly recommended! ごちそ様でした

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place due to all the positive reviews here. However, I was disappointed after my experience. I've had several omakase experiences so I know what to expect. Let's start with the pros: - staff here are extremely friendly & very easy to talk to, they create a great environment to enjoy dinner - the restaurant is very clean and spacious - there's no alcohol but you can bring your own for a $20 corkage fee Cons: - hot appetizers that come with the omakase was only okay, would skip and just stick with the $68 option - sushi rice was hard & had an aftertaste - the fish tasted like a regular nigiri, it didn't seem like it was marinated/prepped for a long time like most omakase places I probably won't be back since I've had better omakase !
google avatar

Traci C.

Yelp
This new-ish omakase sushi bar is well priced. The pace of the courses are perfect. No rushed and hand good chats with the sushi chefs. You can feel that they really care of their products and the way customers are treated. True edomae style with red vinegar warm rice. Smaller shari and preseasoned with sauce, salt or yuzu. Some nigiri are on the standard front but there were definitely some great highlights. Best item of the night - the most luxurious negitoro hand roll I ever had. We ordered extra to wrap up the meal.

Yelp
ATTENTION!!!!!! READ HERE BEFORE YOU GO TO SUSHI BAR SHU!!!!! Background Information: Before I go beyond to the information about the food, I would like to explain the background information about the restaurant first. Sushi bar shu offers omakase for $138 for 22 dishes. Omakase refers to the gastronomy in Japanese world for your information. Therefore, you would get your food one by one. Please have an empty stomach since you'll be very full to eat the omakase. 2 seatings/day 18:00 and 20:00 *VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION: PLEASE READ: YOU MAY WANT TO BOOK HERE 1 MONTH IN ADVANCE SO THAT YOU CAN GET SEATS. IF YOU ARE BOOKING FOR 2 OR LESS, YOU CAN USE YELP, BUT IF YOU ARE BOOKING FOR MORE THAN 2 SEATS, PLEASE CALL THE RESTAURANT! YOU WOULD NEED YOUR CREDIT CARD TO RESERVE THE RESTAURANT WHICH I THINK MAKE SENSE SINCE A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKE TO CANCEL LAST MINUTE, AND OMAKASE IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE PREPARED BEFORE SERVING, SO PLEASE CANCEL BEFORE 24 HOURS OF RESERVATION. ALSO, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ! IF YOU COME HERE MAKE SURE TO NOT SPEAK LOUDLY DURING YOUR TIME OF EATING AND TO FINISH ALL YOUR FOOD!!!!! IT IS VERY DISRESPECTFUL TO THROW AWAY OMAKASE FOOD AND SPEAK LOUDLY DURING OMAKASE. THEREFORE, PLEASE MIND YOUR VOICE AND VOLUME!!! The experience: I love all the food and the experience. Chef Brian and Chef Kevin were very helpful explaining the dishes and how they presented and made the dishes super well. HEAR THIS OUT BECAUSE I STUDIED COOKING (SUSHI SPECIFICALLY): I love how the chefs order the food as followed as the photos attached from first to the end. The order was super awesome that I was shocked as well. Giving lemon zest midway and and orange zest at the end were smart and amazing. It gives you a fresh mouth, so you would feel good, especially the serbet, its just right! I don't blame Chef Kevin for speaking not loud enough explaining the dishes since the other customers speak so LOUDDDDDD and I can't hear what they said. They were so helpful explaining the dishes 5x to me since it is so hard to hear. Chef Brian and chef Kevin are so reliable and nice! They are talkative and conversation starters as well; these traits are very useful for being chefs at the sushi bar. Summary: In summary, Sushi Bar Shu is awesome! Recommended and super worth your money. I would definitely come back again!! Totally recommended. For more reviews, keep reading. About Bad Reviews: I saw a lot of bad reviews with this restaurant, and I am not so sure why??? I am trying not to be bias here, but the bad reviews sound stupid and idiotic. - If you think this is not worth the $138 for the experience? You must be a backwater at omakase. I have tried omakase all around the world. For $138, this is such a good price to experience it. This is the best and most worth it in Vancouver!! - For those who think there are tables on the side, you must be a backwater too at omakase. Do you think omakase would be a good experience to eat at a table instead at the sushi bar? Think again before you make a review. - The reservation review. I have no comment stop being an idiot and check your restaurant before you go - For the alcohol review, you must have not eaten omakase before you backwater!! For those who have eaten omakase, you know that people usualy bring their own alcohol to the omakase. Moreover, you need a liquor license to sell alcohol at the restaurant. In summary for the bad reviews, you guys must be significantly backwater at eating Japanese food. Think again before you make stupid reviews you idiot sandwich. You guys must have only tried backwater sushi in Canada. I bet you guys eat horseradish wasabi and don't even touch the ginger HA HA HA. Thank you for reading my review! Cheers! I hope this would be a helpful review for those who want to go to sushi bar shu! Thank you sushi bar shu for the wonderful omakase journey!

Yelp
New omakase restaurant in town. The chef Kevin is kind and attentive and definitely skilled. Ingredients are flown in and his technique is there. I don't have anything negative to say especially as they accommodated my schedule and my dietary restrictions. Although Vancouver has many sushi shops, it's still rare to see omakase only restaurants. This spot is going to get super busy soon for Vancouver.

Yelp
Had a terrific omakase experience at Sushi Bar Shu last Saturday. Still reminiscing the tasty sushi that was served to us that evening. Here is my review: Sushi Bar Shu is situated on Granville Street in the Vancouver Marpole area. The same space was occupied by a coffee shop in the past. Inside, there are 8-10 seats at the sushi bar and 4-5 tables. Calling ahead to make reservations for the sushi bar seats is a must. I called a day ahead and was told by Kevin (chef and owner) that they were fully booked for the evening, but could put me on the waiting list, which I was happy to take. Luckily, another party canceled the next day and I was able to secure a reservation. The omakase options are only offered at the sushi bar, twice a day (6 and 8 pm). There was a sushi only omakase option for $70, which comes with 12 pieces of sushi. The other option is $100 and you also get cooked dishes, sashimi and dessert. Customers sitting at the tables are offered another menu, which I did not get a chance to see. I opted for the $100 option. Interestingly, I did not see any customers sitting at the tables during my 2-hour dining experience. Chef Kevin was serving most of our food. He was friendly and provided some background information on the sourcing of ingredients and preparation of each dish. Timing of dishes were also on point. I never felt rushed or waited too long for the next dish. When my partner left to take a call, Chef Kevin was considerate enough to halt service for our party. Servers were very attentive and made sure our tea cups were never empty. The food was amazing. You can really taste the freshness of ingredients, most of which were flown in from Japan. For sashimi, we had madai, wild hamachi and some type of mackerel. Chef poured a special type of soy sauce over the fish, which was supposed to be lighter and less salty than traditional soy sauce. It was seaweed based and had a ton of umami. Fish of course was fresh and each had a different texture and taste. Each person for 2 pieces each. Next was the cooked dishes. For me the highlight was the black cod, which was super tender and cooked to perfection! The others were not as memorable, but the portions were just right and presention was nice. Definitely instagram-worthy. Now for the main event, sushi! In true omakase fashion, each piece of sushi is served one after another. This is to ensure each piece is enjoyed at its most ideal state, from texture to flavor to temperature. Depending on the fish or shellfish, certain toppings like yuzu, salt and sesame were added to enhance flavor. Some items were seared. See photos for what we tried that evening. The more premium/expensive ingredients were the Hokkaido uni and bluefin chutoro. All of them were superb. The sushi rice had a good amount of acidity and sweetness, and the seaweed was super crispy. Only complaints were: (1) tamago was not warm in the middle, but the flavors were good; (2) no liquor license; (3) dessert was cheesecake and not that great. These issues did not deter me from enjoying my dining experience, but it would be nice to have the option to order some sake or beer to go with the meal. A great addition to the existing sushi offerings in Vancouver. The food quality and execution is excellent, and prices are reasonable. I would definitely come back.

Yelp
What a dream lunch! Sushi Bar Shu's Chirashidon and other dons available for pickup are delicious and a must try if you are craving sushi! You can tell just from the buttery bites that all their ingredients are so fresh and cut perfectly. Even the rice is flavoured so perfectly and the wasabi is freshly made. My bowl had the following: Akami Hirame Madai Aji Hotategai Shima Aji Hamachi Botan ebi Ikura Uni Chu toro Tamago Thank you so much Sushi Bar Shu for an incredible meal!

Yelp
Good unagi sushi and excellent hand roll. No liquor as of May 2019 Nice OpenTable friendly. Very attentive to guests with our only complaint being servers' fingers touching the glass and tea cup's rims while refilling.

Yelp
I went here in June with my boyfriend and best friend. We had reservations and was seated at the bar. It was a one of a kind experience where you watch each soup, sashimi, sushi, dessert and wagyu be made in front of you. Each time they would provide information about what it is and where it is from, how to eat it (with or without soy sauce/ eat left to right, etc). All the while both chefs would interact according to how much you wanted to chat. It seems like it is usually one chef per party but since we were one of the last bookings of the night, both chefs interacted with us. The servers also checked up on our tea and explained things to us as we weren't quite what the towel was for. Turns out eating with your hands for some of the pieces is normal so the towel was in preparation for that. I felt they went above and beyond what I expected. When my best friend mentioned it was my birthday I got some special toppings and birthday wishes. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the food. My best friend studied and stayed in Japan for a while so she was quite familiar with the regions and cities and such. She also felt the quality here was exceptional seeing that they go to great lengths to get a certain ingredient be it fish or seaweed that is best from a certain area of Japan and at the given season. Huge props to them! I also learned lots about the different seaweed types, toro types and wagyu! The shiso dessert at the end was a great finishing touch after the wagyu. We were so immersed in this experience and in the food that we didn't even think to take pictures of our food except for the wagyu!

Yelp
One of the most authentic sushi restaurants in Vancouver, probably the best! Ordered Omakase at $98 and re ordered a couple of more items. Great atmosphere and high end feel just like in Tokyo. Will definitely return!

Yelp
Excited for this meal after traveling from LA to eat it. I had omakase from all around the world and wanted to see what Vancouver can offer..... Food was mediocre at best and the experience was awful. We finished dinner here and left for a second dinner at another sushi bar. I gave it two stars and not one because the staff was friendly. They serve NO ALCOHOL here which is fine. We decided to drink our bottle of scotch that was intended to be a gift. The staff was happy to serve and open the bottle for us and way later they told us they cannot serve it due to the sake/wine culture. They opened our bottle of scotch and it was 20 minutes into dinner service before they tell us this... which was fine.... We decided to order and get sake delivered because it doesn't make sense for us to miss our on the dining experience to grab sake. The sake arrives and we were at our last course. We had no time to drink the sake and enjoy it with the meal, but they still charged us the corkage fee with no accommodations to our overall experience. Very upsetting experience. Vancouver omakase is a 1/5 so far...

Yelp
This was my first omakase experience and Chef Shin and his team surpassed my expectations! I became emotional at multiple points throughout the meal in response to the flavors, and how perfectly the sushi rice was cooked. All of the fish was excellent and the shiso sorbet at the end was amazing. I found the pacing of the meal to be very nice, and the service was all around excellent. It was evident that they were highly focused on ensuring everyone had a memorable experience, and for me, that was certainly the case.
