Takeout Toro Gets an Upgrade

"An Upper East Side spot that minimizes single-use plastics (the only typical exception being soy sauce) and presents orders in shallow wooden boxes with fitted wooden lids—matching the elevated price points on the menu and conveying a premium takeout ethos suitable for items like a $30 Wagyu roll." - Tammie Teclemariam

We had a great time coming here for brunch. They have some great brunch specials that are good value. Really enjoyed the food and would definitely come here again.

Google
This restaurant offers amazing sushi. The menu appears simple, but there are nuances to all the selections. The dishes are exciting and extraordinarily delicious and I eat a lot of sushi. Their sushi chefs work quickly to create fabulous dishes. The relaxed atmosphere is great for a special date night. And even though I was perfectly satisfied at the end of the main meal, I had to try a dessert - great lava cake.

This is a gorgeous new restaurant that has opened on the UES and I highly recommend you go check it out. Ambiance: The whole set up is gorgeous. When you walk in, there is a brightly lit hallway, feels futuristic. Once you’re inside they’ve created this vibe of indoor garden. They even have a nice fireplace. They have these really nice skylights above their back bar and back dining area so you can get natural light. The whole set up makes the place feel fancy and yet comfortable. Food: We got the spicy cucumber and vegetable gyozas for appetizers. They cucumber sauce was so good, we ended up keeping it for the rest of our feel. The little crunch on top of the cucumber was also such a nice mix. It tasted like a fresh and well seasoned appetizer. The gyozas were also really good. They came out really hot and didn’t feel oily. The stuffing inside was a nice combination of different vegetables. As our main course we shared their vegetarian platter. It came with 9 different sushi bites and 8 pieces of the avocado cucumber roll. All the pieces were delicious and I liked how they created different flavor combinations. Service: Service was great. They were quick to seat us and take our order when we were ready. Food came out at a nice pace. Water glasses were filled quickly. Price: For NYC standards, I find this place to be very reasonably priced especially considering the portion sizes. We paid less than $50/person for our whole meal. Insta: @TheShahLALand

Google
The place was beautiful! The staff are all so nice and helpful, smiles everywhere :) I tried the omakase experience, Chef Michael was absolutely amazing! All of the courses from starters to dessert were both tasted & looked wonderful, he slowly explained and moving on to the next course on my own pace, and can adjust for any allergies too. highly recommend!

Google
No... Impossible to get a reservation ... Place was EMPTY! Should be... Go to take a fun photo by the door, eat someplace else. Food was disappointing to say the least! Overpriced... (drinks at bar were great... Service there sucked, not because they were busy, they weren't.)

Aville C.

Google
Food was good. But the cocktails were great! There were a lot of young kids, like children which made it way too noisy.

Mattia C.

Google
I wish I could give the service more than 5 stars! Came here to celebrate a birthday and the sushi was delicious! I would definitely recommend the Rainbow Maki. The hostess was super sweet and accommodating. They did such a special celebration for my girlfriend and were so hospitable the entire evening. Would definitely recommend and will be coming back again!

Google
Exceptional atmosphere and beautiful presentation. The omakase was fantastic. The price was not surprisingly reasonable for this part of the world. I will come back!

Yelp
My fiance took me here for a last minute omakase on a Monday. Chef Michael did not disappoint. The modern twists to each dish was delicious. Every bite was flavorful and well balanced. Highly recommend if you're looking for omakase in the neighborhood. The restaurant itself was beautiful as well. Seemed newly renovated.

Yelp
So I want to start off by saying our server was PHENOMENAL, Sylvia was absolutley amazing, chatting with us and helping me with a sake pairing. She did not judge our bigger group birthday celebration and even brought us complimentary mochi for the birthday girl // She is the only reason Im giving this spot 4 stars instead of 3. The reason I'm giving this place a 3 star review is because it was incredibly overpriced. The fish wasnt bad by any means but it wasnt the freshest I've had either. The classic maki rolls were a little flavorless imo, relying on spice rather then flavor. This has nothing to do with our wonderful server just the overall food preparation, The soft-shell crab baobuns were a waste of time, fried with barely any crab meat and no sauce 2/10, rock shrimp 9/10 fresh and hot and then the calamari was stale and rubbery with no flavor. I know frozen calamari from the first bite 0/10. I think they just need to step up the quality of food they're pumping out. It is a larger resturaunt space so im sure they go through alot of fish high volume so maybe thats why the quality on certain items isnt to par. I wouldnt recommend and I wouldnt pay this much for just okay okay sushi and sashimi. Ive had takeout sushi that made more of an impact on me

Yelp
The second you walk in the front door you feel like you are about to walk into the future or even onto a spaceship. You are welcomed to an absolutely stunning interior that makes you feel zen and at peace. The service is impeccable and every worker knows everything about the menu by heart. We sat at the bar to do a happy hour special and it did not disappoint. All of the fish was extremely fresh and tasted absolutely amazing. The happy hour deal is not bad! Not something I'd do weekly but not bad for omakase! The lycee martini was amazing and refreshing! The crispy tuna rice was good but I'd skip next time! We will be back to enjoy just an awesome day again soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Here currently - loving it. Space inside is gorgeous, we're doing the happy hour at the bar and the bar seats are super comfy with backs! All of the food has been great, cocktails great, really nice service. Our first time in after passing it by hundreds of times, already planning to return!

Yelp
Takeout review experience: Wow! I was not expecting the inside of this place to look so cool. The storefront is deceivingly small but the inside feels so spacious with the ceiling windows that let natural light flood in. I don't know how to describe the theme but it felt very mystical and full of natural elements, like their green plant wall. I decided to pick up a takeout sushi order after seeing a 30% off promo through Uber Eats. I ordered the "roll revelry" set which came with 2 basic maki rolls and one special roll + miso soup. I picked out the yellowtail maki, salmon avocado maki and the "rainbow roll". I couldn't find much on what ingredients they use in the special rolls in online menus so played it safe with this order. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how dressed up my sushi looked. It arrived in a nice wooden take out box with premium soy sauce and a cool spicy mayo/wasabi swirl dip. The sushi tasted great and was fish-heavy, which is always appreciated. The miso soup was equally delightful and had small cubes of tofu and mini shiitake mushrooms. Overall, the takeout experience was great. The employees were kind and let me sit at one of their tables while waiting for the food to come out. The sushi was delicious, so I'm hopeful to return and try dining in.

Yelp
I need to make sure to come back and write a full review. We stopped by late night during happy hour, and absolutely loved it! Hoping we can go back for more and feel the same! Ambiance: You cannot miss the entrance. It is bright, it is mysterious, and it is cool! Service: SO FRIENDLY! Asked to sit at the bar and had so much fun with Andrew and Michael. Both so nice and had great suggestions! Food: - Crispy Tuna Rice (3.5/5) - Rock Shrimp (5/5) - Edamame (5/5) - Happy Hour platter option (can't remember too much, but we were impressed!) (4/5) - I'm a sucker for Toro Fatty Tuna (4/5) - Cocktails were also very fun, strong, and tasty! Will defintely come back and try more!!!!

Yelp
Sushi Goda is simply outstanding!! Everything from the aesthetic and ambiance to the staff and food was elite. It was one of the best food experiences I have had in a long time. Truly a 10/10 experience through and through. I did the omakase and could not recommend it any more. I was truly blown away!! Every single bite was memorable and special. This place just gained another regular!!

Katherine B.

Yelp
Fantastic mini omaske at the bar for only $45, also great happy hour from 5-10pm. 10/10 atmosphere, I definitely will be returning
google avatar

Yelp
I thought Sushi Goda was decent but certainly not worth the price point. I got the minikase and we had a few extra rolls and it didn't live up to expectation. For the price you're better off going elsewhere.

Yelp
It was very yummy.. except for finding a fly swimming in my soy sauce... and some comments from the waitress. let's start from beginning. It's humid and hot in New York and we stopped by for some food to snack on for the kids as well as to enjoy the AC. The waitress kindly recommended the dragon roll but mentioned that is spicy. She said she can order the spice on the side. We agreed. We also ordered the Wagyu fried rice. Both came fairly quickly, and the dragon roll arrived, but did not have the Spicey mayo on the side as promised. Instead, it was already all over the top of the sushi roll. I asked my daughter to try to see if it's too spicy. She had a small bite and said it was too spicy for her. The waitress took it back with no apology and just said it will take a bit longer to remake it... Which I totally don't think it's our fault, since she said she was one who forgot to mention it to the kitchen in the back. After the kids started eating, they wanted some gyoza. Next waitress came by and we asked to order a plate of gyoza. She just looks at us, and says: again? We are all confused as we didn't order any gyoza at all yet. We said no, we didn't order any yet. And then she kind of impatiently said, OK I'll put it in. Five minutes, my daughter my sees a fly swimming in the soy sauce. Literally swimming in circles... kinda grossed out... I told the next waiter. After the check arrived, the waiter shows up with the tiniest mochi ice cream cut into tiny quarters lol (I guess a type of apology for the swimming fly) Ambience and food is great. If only all of the waitstaff was kind.

Yelp
Their happy hour is a very good deal! I think the rest of the regular menu is overpriced for what they serve in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Sushi Goda is such a cute place. The entrance makes you feel like you're entering a tropical disco island. They have a really good happy hour Monday through Friday from 5PM to 10PM. Included in that happy hour is cocktails $12, wine, beer, crispy rock shrimp $12 and a few other tasty bites. I had the lychee martini and the crispy rock shrimp. My friend had a 12$ crispy rice tuna roll which was also included in the happy hour. This was our 2nd time here for happy hour. I've also tried their beef fried rice which was also very good. Will definitely return.
google avatar

Alvin M.

Yelp
The entrance to the restaurant makes you feel like you're entering an arcade - cool and futuristic. The inside of the restaurant, in contrast, is clean, elegant, and modern. The staff are very friendly. We got the minikase (6 pieces + hand roll). Great presentation and quick service. Unfortunately, the sushi was quite disappointing. Lacking flavor or salt. Some of the pieces also had a significant amount of wasabi (very likely horseradish) that overpowered the dish and made my eyes water. Would have loved to make this my local omakase spot, but the flavor just wasn't there.

Yelp
Food: 5/5 Ambience: 5/5 Service & timeliness: 1/5 Value: 4/5 Echoing others on here in saying the food was great! However, a few major issues would prevent me from going back. 1. We reserved for the sushi counter and were told when we arrived that it was full. 2. We ordered the 15 piece omakase and had to wait 30 min before and in between every 5 pieces. Our total eating time was two hours for a 15 piece omakase with no drinks. There was a lot of apologizing about the wait times so they're obviously aware of the issue, but it's a big issue as they omakase isn't supposed to be filled with 30 minute intermissions. On the bright side, the ambience, food, and value are positive. But there are other spots that don't overbook or are better staffed in the neighborhood.

J X.

Yelp
Beautiful, serene interior, excellent service, delicious food. We had a wonderful mean!
google avatar

Andy C.

Yelp
Soft opening omakase. Beautiful setting, dark and spacious. I am curious if they will try to fill up the floor further. At the moment it's comfortable but almost borderline wasteful. However, you can relax and enjoy your personal space in the meantime. The omakase counter is a showcase at the back with dramatic lighting. Service is attentive and efficient. There might be spacing issues as we filled the counter with our group, so the staff had to reach to clear dishes. BYOB with a corkage fee, much appreciated option. Foodwise, the bites skew more traditional though they are done well. There are some more adventurous compositions to start, including crab and uni. The only complaint when it comes to food is perhaps the portion size, though admittedly my fellow diners have large appetites. All in, they're aiming high enough and they're hitting their target. That said, they're joining a crowded market and price point but I'm excited to see how they will grow and flourish.
google avatar

Gene S.

Yelp
Great and attentive service, kind of "cool" decor, however the food was just marginal. Value and portion sizes decent
google avatar

Jason E.

Yelp
5/5 The quality of their fish and rice is truly incredible. Food presentation perfect and servers were very nice. We ordered all the roll options and several appetizers. You are getting what you're paying for here! We did not come here for omakase, but definitely next time. 5/5. Wonderful addition to the neighborhood.
google avatar

Ivy T.

Yelp
The ambience is beautiful and the service is extremely attentive. This relatively new sushi place is definitely a higher end place where the portion and roll sizes are small and you will leave hungry unless you spend a lot of money. That being said, the overall sushi quality is pretty good, except the Wagyu maki which was very chewy and low quality meat but with a tasty sauce. We spent $170 for 6 rolls and a half bottle of sake (320 ml) and left a little hungry still. Not the place for value but good if you wanted to splurge and spend a lot of money.

Ray S.

Yelp
We've been to a lot of omakases in the city. The modern omakase here was stellar - lots of subtle and delicious twists (eg Hamachi with serrano pepper, fatty tuna with caviar on top). Chef Michael and his sous chef really shined with their innovative menu and meticulous prep, and were also great company and did a great job enhancing the ambiance. Would suggest the restaurant leans into promoting their omakase more in two ways: 1. On the website 2. At the door - let people know you have a unique modern omakase
google avatar

Sophie S.

Yelp
This is a new place on the UES - highly recommend. Ambiance- everything is new and beautifully designed. We ordered spicy edamame and rock shrimp. Both were flavorful and delicious! Rolls - were really tasty and didn't have any fishy flavor. Exceeded all expectations in terms of flavor. Highly recommend - especially the tuna roll!

Izzy B.

Yelp
It's not about the food it's that I wasn't even able I to try the food since the driver never delivered it to my Address? I'm just confused why it says my orders delivered and my food isn't here So sorry I actually really wanted to try the sushi'
google avatar

Brady W.

Yelp
Just moved to the area and this was the first sushi place I tried. I was very impressed with the quality, presentation, and service. The ambiance was much nicer than I expected as well. I will certainly be back!
google avatar

Nita S.

Yelp
If you're looking for affordable Modern Omakase spot in NYC, then Sushi Goda would be the best place to visit. My family and I went there for their soft opening omakase. It turned out to be one of the best omakase dinner I've ever had. From the appetizers to the dessert, they were all excellent, nothing were missed, all had great flavors and high quality. Shout out to Chef Jorge who made the experience really fun and memorable. Service was alo top notch, they were all friendly and attentive. We had a great time there. Thank you team. I highly recommend this place. Can't wait to go back!

Tim F.

Yelp
You're a little confused when you walk in, you feel like you just entered a game of Tron. The whole atmosphere is very nice and impressive. The food was equally impressive. We stopped in for lunch, the only downside is that the waitress said I could not order a couple of the special rolls. Perhaps I had to stick to the prescribed menu specials or maybe I misunderstood. But would definitely go back.

Robert A.

Yelp
The manager refused to serve me because he didn't like my review! Hey, you folks at Yelp. What do you make of that? The manager is an authoritarian jerk! After my first review, which was in fact quite negative, he wrote on Yelp that I asked to be comped for my dinner. A f------- liar! In fact, my recent review was mixed. I enjoyed the mini kase and stated as much. That's why I went back. I had also ordered, at the suggestion of an obviously inexperienced waitress, 2 of the "best rolls in the house." The "sticky rice" stuck to my teeth; the other was loaded with eel sauce, which I dislike. The waitress didn't describe either. I doubt she even knew the ingredients. An enlightened manager would have used this information to improve his restaurant. Instead, he threw me out? The place was about 20% occupied at 8 pm on a Friday night. It's only a matter of time before they are shuttered. My recommendation: Don't go there!
google avatar

Kimberly T.

Yelp
My friend and I decided to give this place a try on a Sunday evening. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and shown to our seats (we didn't have reservations) towards the back. We loved our corner booth under the skylight. We ordered the following: -Spicy edamame (not all that spicy, but savory and delicious) -Tuna crispy rice (tuna tasted amazing and the crispy rice hit) -Goda spicy tuna (the aioli was incredible and the tuna tasted really fresh; also, the crunchy topping was a great added texture) -Sake maki (absolute perfection - no need to say more) -Brownie + matcha ice cream (an average brownie served warm with good matcha ice cream) Overall, we loved the entire meal, and we cannot wait to come back. This is the best sushi I've had in the UES!

John M.

Yelp
Food was great and sashimi was excellent- too many chosen to pick one piece over another- service was good but menu explanations not always understood- the entry hall is amazing

Lynn W.

Yelp
Made a reservation on a credit card and yet they seated my party at the bar area. We did not have the same waiter or waitress and the service was inconsistent. The food was good.
google avatar

Alexa F.

Yelp
Sushi Goda was excellent! We loved the crispy rice and gyoza. We ordered 3 rolls and my favorites were the simpler ones. The scallop roll was delicious and buttery. The only thing I would not get again was my cucumber martini but would love to try other drink the next time I go! Service was great and the restaurant was gorgeous and clean. Can't wait to go back to try the omakase!
google avatar

Roxy M.

Yelp
5 stars all around. Great service, beautiful atmosphere (once you get through the odd spacelike entrance) and absolutely wonderful food. We ordered 7 dishes and each one was delicious - all well flavored and cooked to perfection. Portions were good and prices were decent. I have to say that this was one of the best Japanese meals we've ever had. I can't recommend this place enough. As we were eating, we were thinking about when we could come back. Simply wonderful.

Henri B.

Yelp
I went to Sushi Goda with my wife last night It was our first time there. The service was top notch, the dining room is amazing and so was my martini. Even though it was a Saturday night they didn't rush us like more and more restaurants are doing lately in NYC Most importantly the food was excellent We will most certainly go back to Sushi Goda Great experience
google avatar

Lale C.

Yelp
Absolutely stunning decor. The sultry and jazzy ambiance makes it a perfect date spot if you're trying to impress. Started off with the calamari. Absolutely fantastic. Did not know it was possible to have something fried melt in your mouth after every bite, but that's what happened here. Not overly breaded at all and the flavor was just so addictive. Could have eaten three whole baskets. Then had the Goda spicy tuna and the soft shell crab maki. The maki was great but the Goda spicy tuna stole the show. Another mouth watering, melt in your mouth moment. Flavor on flavor on flavor. Do yourself a favor and come by. Service is also 10/10
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
Had a delicious meal. The fish was very fresh and tasty. The entree portions were sizable but would recommend sticking with sushi as that is their main specialty. The food took a little bit long to arrive but that's because someone else ordered lots of specialty roles. Would go again.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
Mediocre experience. Left me hurting for money spent. I had the premium omakase. Nothing superior about the chef's selections. "Toro" And "king salmon" lacked the fat content and color I am accustomed to. Toro tasted low quality and practically not fresh. Uni from Maine was exceptionally fresh. Uni from Hokkaido was on the verge of no longer fresh and tasted less delicious than Maine uni which should not be the case! Overall it's a cute spot ambience wise but absolutely not worth ordering anything from the omakase menu.
google avatar

Yari C.

Yelp
I went again for the second time in less than a week because I kept thinking about their food. I'm really nerding out about this place. Everything was still amazing and the service as well. I think this has become my favorite sushi place. Updates on dishes I tried today: Rock shrimp tempura: 5/5, crispy though not overly battered. It was tossed in a really great tangy sauce which elevated this dish and paired well with the spicy mayo sauce. Crispy tuna rice: 5/5. The rice is crispy in the right way; not soft/cakey like KYU (though I enjoy that too) and not overly crispy/chewy like Nobu. Will get it every time. Chu toro, Uni, and Otoro: 6/5. Incredible. Chutoro was exquisite. The uni was topped with flaky salt I think? Which took it absolutely over the top! Very fresh Uni. And finally.. the Otoro topped with caviar was possibly the best bite I've ever had. I know that's a huge statement.. I mean it. That caviar was super good quality. If it counts for anything, there was another person also solo dining (we were the only two in the restaurant) and she was absolutely raving to the staff about how good the sushi is. Run here!!
google avatar

Ava L.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite sushi spots in the city. Everything is impeccably made and plated. There are quite a few options and you can also opt to come and do omakase. The service is very attentive and quick. Definitely a spot not to miss
google avatar

H. D.

Yelp
Food was excellent. Fresh. We had a variety of seafood rolls. Not cheap but all was delicious.

Courtney C.

Yelp
Gorgeous place. The service was wonderful. We went there for lunch so it was more empty but it would be a great dinner spot. The food was just delicious. Exceeded expectations in every way. Everything you want in a sushi spot.

Elaina R.

Yelp
Phenomenal fish, get the omakase and the fatty tuna rice. Waiters give excellent sake recommendations. We've been twice in one week, can't stay away
google avatar

Rocky K.

Yelp
Nice ambiance. Surprisingly loud given the relatively high ceilings. Food was excellent
google avatar

Anita M.

Yelp
Everything was delicious and fresh. Got four of their rolls and every bite was amazing. I will definitely go back!! The Hama Maki in particular was incredible, I was initially worried it would be overly spicy but it was balanced and flavorful. Each roll had 8 pieces so the portions were good too
google avatar

Jono S.

Yelp
Excellent neighborhood spot. Superb service, casual. Recommend. Suggest a reservation if you'd like to sit somewhere other than the sushi bar.

Ester W.

Yelp
Premium grade sushi, delivered seamlessly in aesthetically pleasing packaging. Will definitely be ordering from here again soon.
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
I've searched quite a while for my favorite sushi spot in Manhattan, and this one absolutely takes the cake. Peaceful, clean, and elevated ambiance, impeccable and friendly service, and the best rolls and appetizers I have had in the area. This place is great for intimate gatherings or even parties and larger groups. There's also a back garden! I look forward to making this my regular spot whenever I'm back in the neighborhood.

Parma Z.

Yelp
The decor and ambiance is very nice and the service is good. However the food is very mediocre. We got the omakase and were disappointed at how bland it was. Not worth it for the price

Lauren S.

Yelp
Have been seeing signs about Sushi Goda opening and have been so excited to try it. It was great! The service was on point and our waiter did a great job of explaining the menu. The ambiance of the restaurant was also really nice it has an intimate feeling with lots of greenery as well. We tried the wagyu sashimi which was delicious as well as the sake roll. Definitely recommend and can't wait to go back!

Kathy W.

Yelp
Went for dinner last night and had some of the best sushi we have ever had in NYC. Great addition to the UES!

Robert A.

Yelp
The management at Sushi Goda posted a reply to my review in which they asserted that I asked to be comped for my meal. ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE! I did not ask for a thing, other than the second half of my omikase be better than the first - and it was not. The place is still empty. Beware before you go in. They even took their overpriced menu off the door.
