Visiting family from out of town, we decided to come here since it's my cousin's favorite local sushi spot. Definitely some of the best sushi I've had in a while and next time I'm in the area, I'd love to visit back.
The menu is very expansive and they also have a marker board with tons of daily specials, including an "August" sushi roll and some "live" seafood dishes, which I can only assume means like squid that's actually moving. Wasn't feeling that adventurous, but there was definitely a wide selection - plus, there's the hibachi side of the restaurant, which next time I'd like to try.
We all ordered different rolls, a few from the more basic categories like Philly Roll, California Roll, etc. and then the more gourmet rolls, like Spicy Seafood or Yellowtail. We all agreed that each piece of sushi was fantastic, fresh and well-composed. My shrimp tempura roll wasn't greasy or chewy like I've had it some other places and my absolute favorite EVER was the Rainbow Roll (always opt for this anywhere you go, you won't be disappointed). Super fresh, colorful variety of fish on the outside of the roll, sashimi style, without a whole lot of fillers - everyone agreed this one was fantastic. Another favorite was whatever one came with "seaweed dust" (I can't remember the name). Looked like oregano, but tasted amazing.
Also, presentation is on point. The sushi is served on these gorgeous square white plates that are completely flat without any ridges. Very classy.
My only complaints (hence the 4 stars) are the overall ambience, rushed service and the miso eggplant appetizer. For one, we were a party of 5 and I was hoping for a more dimly lit, booth vibe. The table we got was directly next to the door and was actually two tables pulled together. Also, it was almost too fluorescent and bright in there. For the quality of the food, I was surprised at how outdated the décor felt, like a chain restaurant from the 90s. The plates were beautiful, but then on the table were those cheap plastic inserts with handwritten desserts/specials on pink paper. Felt kinda cheap.
The service was decent, but not entirely welcoming. Did kind of feel like we were supposed to be in and out real quick.
The miso eggplant appetizer was the only thing I hated. Everyone else liked it, so maybe it's a matter of personal preference. The purple presentation looked pretty, but the eggplant was SO soggy, you could barely eat it with the chopsticks. Not only that, the entire thing was SWIMMING in grease and each piece was laden with it - and the eggplant wasn't even battered or presented as a deep-fried dish. It was like they dumped fresh eggplant with no batter into a giant vat of fry oil, so it ended up tasting like whatever was cooked in there - a mix of carnival French fries and funnel cake, but stale and old. Not a fan.
The fried ice cream dessert was delicious. I've never tried red bean ice cream before and it was very interesting, but tasty.
