Excellent sushi! My local for over 20 years! Always outstanding and friendly service by the owner! The sushi here is simply exceptional. Every piece showcases the freshness and quality of ingredients, from buttery, melt-in-your-mouth sashimi to perfectly seasoned rice that holds each roll together. Standout dishes include: Omakase Set – A chef’s choice selection of the freshest seasonal fish, beautifully presented. Toro Nigiri – The fatty tuna is incredibly rich and delicate. Dragon Roll – A creative and flavourful roll featuring eel, avocado, and a light drizzle of eel sauce. Uni (Sea Urchin) Sushi – A must-try for seafood lovers, with a creamy and slightly sweet taste. Every dish is prepared with precision and artistry, making it a true feast for both the palate and the eyes.

Kept coming back twice to this place during my stay in Sydney. Love love their humble food served with authenticity. Staff are so nice and friendly too. Highly recommend if you are looking for genuine comfort food. Great if you going to eat alone or in groups.

Google
Great authentic Japanese food served by friendly and easygoing staff. Their chicken katsu is always excellent and a, generous serve, but my favourite is their beef teriyaki. The beef is finely cut and incredibly tender, and the sauce is rich and has just the right amount of sweetness. It might be my favourite umami experience ever - and that's saying something.😋 It's a must try. It's not a glamorous place, but that's part of its charm. You feel like you're tucked away in a back lane in Tokyo somewhere. Great value for money too.

Sushi on Stanley is one of my favourite casual Japanese restaurant! Good food, good prices and good vibes. Highly recommend it I often dine in and occasionally I grab some take away.

Google
I travel a lot and have tried sushi all over the world, and this is easily one of the best. The fish is incredibly fresh, the presentation is beautiful, and the flavors are perfectly balanced. The attention to detail and quality here truly stand out. Highly recommend!

Google
Visited Sunday dinner - Food was average like local street food and was cold (chicken curry). The lady no attention to detail, we ordered sushi didn’t give us container for wasabi, served entrees without plates, and no service at all to be honest.

Google
I came with my partner to try out this Japanese restaurant. He ordered a set meal, and I wanted the exact same one right after him. The staff member asked me several times if I wanted the same set, and I clearly answered “yes” each time. However, when it came time to pay, she only charged us for one set and seemed unsure or confused about my request. I didn’t feel comfortable insisting again, especially since it didn’t seem well received the first time. As a result, my partner ate, and I didn’t. And to make matters worse, his rice wasn’t even good. I was looking forward to trying this place, but this misunderstanding and the average food quality left a bad impression. Not planning to return.

Google
Great service and lovely food. Very affordable and a more authentic Japanese vibe to the place. Never been to japan but it has that vibe none the less. I imagine this is what it’s like there. I love the rustic food and you can bring your own booze. Highly recommend this place 😊❤️

Yelp
Great sushi and great prices!!! You have to get their when they open otherwise wait time could be over an hour sometimes:) but it worth it! The place is pretty small: a few tables inside and outside, so a lot of people take orders to go:) Everything was fresh and delicious:) Also it is BYOB, which is amazing:) Bring your favorite drink and enjoy great food :) Recommend! Cheers :)

Yelp
Phenomenally fresh ingredients and a friendly atmosphere make this place noteworthy. I ordered the sushi avocado and tuna rolls with a side salad and steamed pork gyoza. Delicious. Will be going back for lunch tomorrow.

Yelp
By far the best value and best tasting sushi around. Always fast and never a disappointment. I love the deep fried tofu here always very fresh and the spicy sauce it sits in is delicious. Disappointing today Saturday 19th of March: doors open, staff on hand and lights on but refused to be sold the already prepared take away sushi roll as it was "we open in 10 minutes". Asked to wait 10 minutes before they would serve us...meanwhile staff standing around.

Yelp
Oh my god soft shelled crab rolls, where have you been all my life??? I know everyone raves about the salmon at Sushi on Stanley (which features prominently on their menu and combo platter deals), but the soft shelled crab roll is truly the hidden gem on their menu ($5.50). Tell them you want them spicy, and these four pieces of fried crab loveliness are "this is so good I must be allergic to it or something" delicious. While I'm not sure I'll ever be able to tear myself away from the crab now that I have tried it, the tuna was tasty and sweet, and the fish teriyaki was also good. As an added bonus, though small, the restaurant itself is actually quite lovely with its simple Japanese touches and the wide grins of its diners lighting the place up.

Yelp
The BEST meal we had in sydney. Sushi was sooooo fresh and soooooo delicious! It was a bargain for the quality of fish you get, and that's saying a lot considering how expensive food in sydney is. The restaurant is TINY, and gets super packed. So unless you show up early, expect a little bit of a wait. Even better, like many restaurants in australia, you can BYOB! ;)

Yelp
Bottom Line - Super cheap. Super Fresh. A terrific little hole in the wall neighbourhood favourite that we will definitely be visiting again soon. It's a tiny little spot and we'd heard that there usually is a line, but we came early on a Sunday evening and there were about 5 empty tables to choose from. There isn'y anything glamorous about it...probably not a first date kinda spot, but it's the perfect place for a quick and delicious sushi dinner for great value. We had Fried Dumplings ($5), the Medium Sushi & Sashimi Platter ($22), the Salmon Teriyaki which also came with Rice, Miso Soup and a Side Salad ($13). Everything was super fresh. The staff was friendly and efficient. Nothing not to like about that...

Yelp
I like Sushi. No, that's a lie. I freakin' love sushi. Ask anyone. I'll eat it for breakfast if I allow myself (which is often). I'll eat it days in a row for lunch. Suffice to say, I'll rarely say no to sushi. We visited Sushi on Stanley during the lunch-hour rush which meant we had to had to get our ninja on. There were plenty of hungry eyes willing you to hurry up and free another table. We ate with speed but still managed to enjoy our California rolls, salmon sashimi and frankly, the best miso soup I've had this side of Tokyo. The sushi was good quality and luckily there wasn't a compromise between the quality and the cost. For what you get the price is reasonable and I'd be back in a heart beat. Next time I'm taking my nun-chucks.

Yelp
If you're a sushi aficionado or novice, sushi on stanley will be your education into the world of extremely awesome sushi. It's been an award winning best sushi bar for years on end, and there's no surprise as to why, their sushi is incredibly fresh, using great creative combinations, artistically presented with such care, and great value for money. For starters try their edamame beans, followed by dumplings, fresh tuna and salmon sashimi, and finish up with their delicious chicken teriyaki, all for under $20. This is a hole in the wall type place, so if you're a big group try to book a table in advance, and if you're in a rush they're already very quick at making the meals, so please don't be too impatient.

Yelp
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Sushi on Stanley, the best "hole in the wall" I've ever found (and I've travelled the world the last 8.5years) Super cheap - with amazing quality food! My favs are their udon, tempura, sushi rolls, bento boxes, sashimi! They also do BYO if you need it! Enjoy!!

Yelp
Great to eat in and also to take away. Both are just as great. I love it how (in many cases) when taking away; I can see that my sushi is being freshly prepared for me. Four circular rolls of raw salmon and avocado; and another four rolls of raw tuna and avocado for only $7 is fantastic value, and without overdoing it on the rice either. This is one sushi establishment that does not get stingy on the fish. The fish is abundant, and their fresh wasabi really tastes like a plant and really packs some punch. The servings of the fish are generous, and their miso soup (while eating in) with any of their chicken and fish dishes (with great company, where conversations can last for hours) is just divine. The staff are super friendly, and the ambience is inviting. It is a pity that the shop front is small; and although it can get busy as: people are so polite and mindful of the small space. Payment is via cash only; but don't let that put you off experiencing Darlinghurst's (if not Sydney's) best non-sushi train establishment. I am salivating already. It's too bad as I am situated and living roughly 800kms away right now.

Yelp
Ok finally I went to sushi in Stanley! I order a set with teriyaki chicken, sashimi n tempura! I'm very impressed with the tempura! It's so yummy! Didn't expected it can be so fresh!!! Sashimi is fresh enough but not that impressive at all, n the Teriyaki chicken is over cooked, even there is a lot of sauces on it, the chicken was still very dry! The meal comes with rice, salad and soup. One point down is becoz this place is way too small.

Yelp
This little nook of a restaurant, tucked away in Darlinghurst, has some of the best quality Japanese food for the lowest prices. This is not an exaggeration, I frequently go there with my gf and eat plenty of food and the total bill is only $30-40. Their chicken teriyaki is amazing. I know that a lot of places make pretty lame and bland teriyaki, but Sushi on Stanley makes it sweet, gooey, and moreish. I would glady eat a bucket load of it. The other thing that sets this location apart from other Japanese venues is their sushi. It is fresh and the ratio of filling to rice is dumbfounding. I'll upload a photo of a sushi roll and you can have a look at the massive amounts of salmon or avocado in each roll. You might have to wait for a seat as there aren't many tables, and it gets quite busy during lunch times.
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Yum! Delicious, fresh, made when you order sushi and great japanese food. I love the teriyaki chicken bento box with salmon sushi. How do they make the teriyaki sauce so yummy and sticky? I don't know-but its yummy. A hole in the wall type place, blink and you'll miss it Don't take for a first date if your trying to impress! Great for a casual meal or takeaway Not so great on a hot day as no air-con and chairs are very close together. Nice enough staff-service is prompt.
google avatar

Correy H.

Yelp
This place was a fantastic find! The sushi was fresh, fantastic and extremely reasonable. Not to mention how quick our service was. This is a smaller place --- so I would recommend only a party of 4 or less. Even though not in the thick of activity, the location is pretty central to many neighboring areas without all the hustle and bustle.
google avatar

Violetta C.

Yelp
Sushi on Stanley is a good sushi/sashimi spot in inner Sydney. It's not my first time here always fresh . Please try the prawn tempura it's delicious here!
google avatar

Morgan C.

Yelp
You know as soon as you get to Stanley Street on a busy lunchtime that Sushi on Stanley must be good. It's right next door to another sushi joint that seems to rely totally on the reluctant rejectees who haven't got time to wait for a table a their preferred destination. If there's a spare seat at SoS, then the other choice is almost guaranteed to be empty or very close to. The reason for its popularity? Great value, fresh, delicious sushi, and a great reputation to go with it (which is unfortunate for the place next door - doesn't really stand much of a chance!). And if you don't think you have time to sit down for a meal, you need not worry, service is extremely prompt! It may look like just another small sushi bar, but this one is definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
I used to head to this place for lunch all the time when i worked in the area and it was a always a simple good place to grab Sushi.... During lunch time this tiny little place is packed, if you're grabbing takeaways make sure to stand outside or else the wait staff or other patrons will get annoyed with you using the very little space that they have. The meals are fair in price - neither cheap or expensive - but it's consistently good and simple which i believe to be a good sign....they also have a high food turnover - which means their sashimi is really fresh - always important for sushi.... Great vibe, awesome simple Japanese...worthy of a lunch date.
google avatar

Alecia W.

Yelp
There is always, always, always a line here, but the meals come out from the kitchen quickly which makes for a high table turnover. One Friday night I made the impatient mistake of going to the Japanese diner next door when we were told a table would be some twenty minutes - make sure you hang around, the food is far better and it's around the same price for a meal anyway. The vegetable tempura is light, crispy and served straight from the deep-fryer, and the entrée mixed sashimi plate is pretty generous given the price. They are also BYO, adding yet another reason to stop in here for a delicious and quick dinner before hopping along to Darlinghurst's many nearby bars.
google avatar

Alexandra B.

Yelp
Went for dinner but had to leave before even placing an order. Trash and leftover food on tables and pigeons in the restaurant flying around that were eating near/in the kitchen and on the tables. I was very disappointed after reading the good reviews. Will not be returning.
google avatar

Kt Y.

Yelp
Good, simple fresh dishes with a fun, young crowd. Small wait, but they quickly move people in and out. Miso soup is tasty, and the spicy edamame has got great kick. Saw every table seeking to eat something different, so you probably can't go wrong. Only downfall is it's pretty open so there's many flies around the outside and inside.
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
One of the better sushi places I've visited in Sydney. The place is tiny, nestled into a few other restaurants on Stanley Street, but the few times I've been (outside of the peak times) I've grabbed a table straight away. The sushi is great, the sashimi even better (if rather thinly sliced) and the chicken teriyaki is fantastic. Go for one of the meal combinations for the best value.
google avatar

Hannah D.

Yelp
This place is awesome value for money. Delicious, fresh sushi that doesn't break the bank. Only downside is that everyone else seems to know this secret, so they are often busy during dinner hours. Much better for small groups or takeaway. Go for one of the dinner combos so you can have a taste of everything. My favourite is the Teriyaki (chicken or beef) with sashimi, that comes with a salad, miso soup and rice for $16. Winning!
google avatar

Elliott W.

Yelp
How have I not reviewed this place before???? I eat here at least once, if not twice a week for the following reasons: 1. It's a block from my house 2. The sushi is phenomenal 3. It's dirt cheap Well, maybe dirt cheap isn't the right phrase to use considering we're talking about Sydney, but considering you can get a sashimi/california roll/salad/miso soup combo for $14 I'd say it's pretty solid in terms of value to food ratio. It's also BYO which is a huge perk in my opinion. Anytime you're in the mood for sushi head here- if you don't want to eat there you can always takeaway, too.
google avatar

Rowan U.

Yelp
Am hitting all my old favourite spots now that I'm back in Sydney, and it's good to see many haven't changed; Sushi on Stanley is great for good, cheap sushi. For a quick win in the warmer months, grab some rolls from here, some Asahi beer from the Lord Roberts take away across the road, and walk up the hill to Hyde Park and watch people. The best rolls are: salmon avocado, soft shell crab, teriyaki chicken, and tempura prawn. All of them are big - most people will be stuffed after two. If you can land a seat in side (it's nearly always busy at meal times) the set meals are good, service is fast and efficient, but it's a bit of a squeeze for space. Take away is another option, and you'll never have to wait long.

Yelp
LEGIT!!!!! possibly the best sushi ive had in oz & since living in hawaii. well done. ive been here a few times in the past months and its fantastic! will be coming back here time and time again. i dont think you can go wrong with anything. a surprise sushi roll i loved is the tempura salmon. i rekon this place would be even better if it got smaller...... hhhhmmmmm morios
google avatar

Ali S.

Yelp
This place is very cheap (but small portions) and while the tuna is amazing, the salmon really lacked flavor. It's cash only.
google avatar

Grace S.

Yelp
This small restaurant seems to run by Koreans , but honestly , who cares if the food is good ?! My partner and I were there at 2.30pm on a Saturday afternoon and the restaurant was about 50% full, with quite a number of people walking in for their take outs. Most of the lunch combo sets are in the price range of $10- $14. Portion is not super big but not small either. I had the Chicken Katsu Curry Don Lunch Set ($10 woohoo!). It includes a small salad, miso soup and rice. I love how the curry was served on the side, and the chicken katsu was thick and juicy, set on top of a wire rack (good idea! so the chicken remains crispy). My only (but small!) complaint would be that the chicken katsu was not piping hot (only lukewarm).....but hey! That's just me , being a picky eater :)
google avatar

Adam L.

Yelp
If you want incredible sushi, go no further. The pricing is amazing, service is ultra quick and the quality is beyond fresh. I will be back to eat here again the second I come back to Australia. Five stars!
google avatar

Sarah D.

Yelp
Solid sushi spot in Darlinghurst. Very cheap by Sydney standards, especially the little pre-made to-go boxes. Must try the chicken sushi!
google avatar

Calvin L.

Yelp
This place was okay in terms of value. We came here based upon the high yelp reviews and the single dollar sign. I would definitely not consider this place a single dollar sign. We ordered a tempura+sushi combo, along with some gyoza and a salmon/avocado roll, and it ran us over 30 bucks for the 2 of us. The salmon avocado rolls were nice sizeable pieces, but only 4 pieces. The food and service was reasonable, but we were still a little hungry afterwards. For a non-authentic Korean/Chinese run place, I expect to be stuffed on 15 bucks of food! To be fair, we are out of towners, so maybe we are not used to the usual prices here.
google avatar

Yelp
lunch set. Teriyaki beef - a little bit too salty for me. dumpling - juicy. Sashimi, sushi.

Bamboo H.

Yelp
Love love love this place! Been wanting to write a review since I got back to the States. This is a little hole in a wall place, which is actually always the best place to go to. I really love their spicy salmon salad and I've been trying to find a place here in the states that can do the same dish. The place is rather small and hard to get a seat but the food is definitely worth it. Would definitely go to this restaurant again.
google avatar

Moe K.

Yelp
Super cute, authentic little Japanese place. BYO which is nice. Can be a bit a difficult getting a table if you have more than two or three people. The food was awesome and authentic as well as speedy.
google avatar

Yelp
Great value for a quick and easy sushi snack - I recommend the Katsu Chicken and Avocado!

Michael K.

Yelp
When I moved to Sydney a friend mentioned that this was his favourite place to go in the city. One night while out with another friend we came across and decided to try it (based on the original recommendation). We were excited, but didn't know exactly what we were in store for. We snagged a spot in the tiny, tiny place, and settled in for a delicious meal. By the time we were done, we knew we would come back for more soon. SoS (our SMS abbreviation) became our go-to place; not only would we meet up after work (grab a drink across the street beforehand) in the CBD, but we would even venture in from Darlington and Erko to eat on the weekends. Whenever I find myself back in Australia I make it a point to grab dinner here! It is located in a fairly quiet area, with the closest CityRail stop up at Hyde Park (maybe a toss-up, Kings X might be about the same distance). Be forewarned, there are only four to six tables in the restaurant, so you might have to wait - don't worry - it is worth it! There is a wide selection for anyone(some of my friends are vegetarians and vegans), the prices are fantastic, the portions are massive and the food is top notch... Nothing fancy, but you won't leave disappointed!
google avatar

Oliver H.

Yelp
Unassuming sushi place with a great selection of sushi, rolls and delicious sashimi at really great prices. Really liked that this rolls came in 4 pc plates allowing for sampling of a greater number of kinds.

Elle W.

Yelp
I'm not a fan. I tried this place because of the reviews and it's around the corner but I was disappointed and a little grossed out while eating some of it. You get what you pay for and the quality is awful. If you're a male and thinking of taking a girl to this place for the first date, please don't. Unless of course you never want to see her again.
google avatar

Lucinda W.

Yelp
This is a small little sushi bar which was a short walk from Kings Cross. We ordered some katsu chicken sushi, soft shell crab and a karage chicken. All the dishes came out quickly and were tasty. I must say I have had better sushi and karage chicken before but it was still fresh, cheap and good to eat!
google avatar

Kat H.

Yelp
I had a teriyaki chicken + sushi set and the quality was very average .. salmon nigiri was good but it's not that hard to get it right. The other parts to the set were pretty bad, rice was literally served cold and it had been cooked with too much water, miso soup was warm and quickly went cold - nothing special about the taste either. I can't believe a place like this with a lot of popularity and high rating would deliver to such poor standards.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Disgusted had to leave before ordering. Walked in picked a table, staff wiped down table with dirty towel then proceeded to cough everywhere with out even attempting to cover her mouth. Then opened the fridge and coughed all over the food, and finally once more coughed all over food about to be served. We couldn't take it and had to leave. It is unfortunate as we were looking forward to eating here due to the great reviews, but out right neglect by staff and management for cleanliness will probably stop us from ever trying this place.
google avatar

Ambrose R.

Yelp
Loses a star only for the disposable chopsticks - why do places do it to us? Great prices, delicious food, BYO, happening atmosphere, friendly staff make it a local treasure.
google avatar

Jilleen l.

Yelp
So yummy! Really excited I got to eat here on a whim because we were staying right around the corner! Not only are the combination meals great to look at when they bring it to your table, the value, price, and amount of food you get is incredible as an American. I couldn't believe how big the salmon sashimi pieces were! Everything I had was delicious! I'm sure everyone has their favorites, mine being the sashimi hands down. Both my uncle and I ate here twice during our short stay to Sydney. A really impressive dining option to a lot of the other great food choices in this city!
google avatar

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
Went here with a bunch of coworkers yesterday and we all loved it. You get alot of food for not very much money. We all got the combos with the salad, miso soup, the teriyaki and the sashimi. The food was excellent and very fresh. I would def come back here.

William C.

Yelp
A Sydney staple. Perhaps not what it once was (but what is) as it has gained popularity over the years. If you want reliable sushi, the same 4 stars every time, this is your place. No crazy creations and no over the top wows, but never a disappointment. The sushi is always tasty, the udon is always flavourful where others can disappoint. It's just a good, reliable spot.
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
Bad sushi here. They put mayo on all the rolls. The waitresses don't understand english and the place is really small.
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
I would give it one less star if my meal weren't so cheap. Not much variety and the quality of the fish is OK. Chicken teriyaki roll was easily my favorite thing here. A meal for 2 comes in under $40 and I'm a cheap jerk, so hey, I guess I'll be coming here again. BYO next time even.

Craig B.

Yelp
Great little place for sushi, was really busy but still only had to wait about 10mins for food. I had small sushi plate and endname beans.
google avatar

Matt F.

Yelp
Great sushi for what would be good value in the USA (where food is generally much cheaper), and is thus a GREAT value in Sydney. Chicken karaage, gyoza, soft-shell crab rolls, shrimp tempura rolls and spicy tuna mini-rolls are all stellar. Plus, Sriracha on every table? Niiiiccce.
google avatar

Sky M.

Yelp
Not trying to offend but this is mediocre Japanese food at best. Perhaps my standards for sushi are unrealistic coming from LA but I found this food dull and uninspired. I had typical fair-a tempura sushi roll and a bowl of Udon noodles. The rice they used looked and tasted very flat and bland. The tempura was good enough (difficult to mess that up) but the Udon was downright bad. The noodles were too chewy and the flavor was just not there. To top it off the place is very expensive (but that seems to the be the case everywhere in Sydney).
