Svalbar is easily one of the most comforting places to dine in Longyearbyen, especially during winter. The atmosphere is cozy, welcoming, and warm — exactly what you need after a cold day outside. Their opening hours are also very reasonable, making it easy to find a proper dinner without stress.
The staff deserve special mention. Every single person here was friendly, welcoming, and highly skilled. The bartenders, in particular, really know what they’re doing — watching them mix drinks is a pleasure in itself. I ended up dining here three times during my stay, including one visit with a reservation, and it never disappointed.
On my second visit, I was extremely hungry and ordered two main dishes — which clearly impressed the waitress and gave us a good laugh. I’ve also worked my way through most of the house cocktails, and two standouts are “Star Singer” and “Moaning Lisa.” These are absolute must-tries for first-time visitors.
Food-wise, the beef and reindeer tenderloin are my favourites — beautifully prepared, rich in flavour, and perfectly suited to the Arctic setting.
I already know I’ll be back in Longyearbyen one day, and when I am, Svalbar will definitely be one of my first stops again.
