Not the 5-star experience we were hoping for.
We chose the Swahili Resort because we were looking for a relaxing 5-star getaway, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to our expectations. The rooms are nicely decorated, but we were initially given one that had a very strong smell of mold — so much so that even our clothes started to absorb the odor. We realized this was likely an issue with the ground-floor rooms. After the first night, we asked to change room, and thankfully, the staff moved us upstairs. I would definitely not recommend the ground-floor rooms.
Two other disappointing aspects were the sea and the food. The beach is not particularly nice — in fact, the sunbeds are placed on a raised terrace rather than close to the water’s edge. As for the food, it was quite bad. We tried both the seafood and beach restaurants, and when we ordered the grilled catch of the day, it tasted burnt, as if the grill hadn’t been cleaned in months.
On a positive note, the swimming pool area is beautiful and very atmospheric, even though the water wasn’t perfectly clean, and the room decor is tasteful.
If you’re simply looking for a place to relax by the pool and don’t have high expectations for the food, this resort might still work for you — otherwise, it’s not the luxurious experience it claims to be.
