What to Do in London on a Rainy Day | Vogue

"Umbrella makers are all around in London, but none are as atmospheric as Swaine Adeney Brigg, squeezed into an arcade off of Piccadilly near the rococo shop windows at Fortnum & Mason. First your measurements will be taken (head to toe, wrist to ground), before you are led in front of a mirror to clasp brolly after brolly, holding them aloft like Mary Poppins in flight, until the shop floor is covered with open black canopies and the optimal height and diameter of your umbrella has been ascertained. Then you’ll run your hands over the different types of wood to choose your handle. There’s everything from smooth, pale cherry to whangee, a type of bamboo, to a birch travel type that unscrews into two pieces (for an easier fit in a suitcase) and a Malacca cane version with a concealed drinking flask in the shaft. Ladies’ umbrellas are more delicately proportioned than those made for men. The smaller size looks like something between an umbrella and a parasol, and is designed to hang comfortably on a forearm rather than rap the ground like a walking stick. Once you have decided on a canopy color (jaguar green and navy are the most popular) and material (nylon is harder wearing, but silk reputedly issues a lovelier thud under rain), you have only to choose your collar (gold or silver) and decide whether you would like your initials engraved (why not?). If the process sounds faintly enchanting, it is—also about as costly as an afternoon at the spa, and far more practical." - Jo Rodgers

Brigg umbrellas by Swaine are in a league of their own. I’ve only owned one - but that’s the point. You don’t need more than one when something is made this well. The craftsmanship is exceptional, the materials are clearly chosen with care, and there’s a quiet elegance to the way it feels in hand. It’s not a flashy accessory; it’s a statement of quality, tradition, and longevity. In a world full of things we buy and dispose of, this is something made to last decades, not just seasons. Even after regular use, mine still looks as refined and solid as the day I bought it. I have no doubt it will still be with me many years from now. The team here are knowledgeable and attentive, and they’ll help you select something that suits you perfectly — and if you want to go further, they offer full bespoke options as well. Highly recommended.

Brigg umbrellas are the best. Been using these highly crafted umbrellas for nearly 20 years without a problem. They will outlast all the modern mass made umbrellas on the market, look timeless decades after good use. Also own several Brigg which are 50-100 years old and work great. Highly recommended!

Wonderful store. Great experience. It's very reassuring that these gorgeous, traditional briefcases are still being made. Timeless design and superb quality, these bridle leather, made in England business cases are perhaps the finest in the world. An executive wanting to look professional still needs a briefcase like those made by Swaine Adene . He should not be going to the office with a backpack. The hats and umbrellas sold here are also brilliant and very traditional.

So thrilled with my whole experience here, a couple of months ago I purchased a saddle bag. From the moment I entered the shop I was made to feel welcome and comfortable by incredibly knowledgeable and attentive staff. I received great product advice based on what I was looking for/needed. Clear communication with the manager herself throughout and any questions I had were met with detailed and prompt response. The bag is STUNNING and something I will treasure/will last me a life time. I am looking forward to my next purchase.

Don't do it. The reputation thy once had for quality is no longer deserved and if you want an umbrella that serves its purpose buy one elsewhere. The one i bought was blown inside out by a strong breeze and cost £80 to repair. I have used it three or four times since and the supposedly new cover is beginninig to split. Garage forecourt golfing umbrella would have been better and probably less than a tenth of the price

The quality of the hats are excellent, if you take care of them they last decades. My father bought a perfectly fitted grey bowler there 60 years and it is still in use and looking good.

Best hats by far ever in London. Each of them are made personally for you, with rabbit hair, that makes them so comfortable. They don’t have any women hats, but because of them tailored made, they’re quite unisex and you have a good selection of models to choose from, or even design yourself. Expensive, but worth it. For a lifetime. Also beautiful leather accessories
