Swayambhu Temple — or as most people call it, the Monkey Temple — was honestly such a fun place to explore! Yeah, the steps were a bit of a workout (okay, a lot), but once you reach the top, the view is totally worth it. Kathmandu stretches out in every direction, and the breeze up there feels amazing after the climb.
But let’s talk about the real treasures: the souvenir stalls! I could’ve spent hours just browsing. They had everything — colorful prayer flags, mini Buddha statues, chunky beaded bracelets, fridge magnets, cute little hand-carved elephants, and even singing bowls you can pretend to know how to use. I got totally carried away looking at those tiny mandala coasters and quirky keychains with the Buddha eyes on them — like, how many keychains is too many?
The best part? Haggling just a little (in a fun way), chatting with the shopkeepers, and finding those perfect little gifts for friends — or let’s be real, mostly for myself. I picked up a couple of bracelets, a tiny prayer wheel that spins, and a magnet that says “Om” because it felt like a vibe.
And yes — the monkeys are real, they’re everywhere, and they are not shy. Hold onto your snacks!
Overall, Swayambhu isn’t just about the temple — it’s the energy, the colors, the chaos, the monkeys, and the shopping. Honestly, a perfect combo of culture and fun.
