Best Sydney Restaurants: Where to Eat and Drink

"Sweet Belem Cake Boutique will make you happy if you save room for dessert, especially when you sample one of their Portuguese custard tarts made with free-range eggs. Don’t miss this Little Portugal sweet spot led by chef-owner Jose Silva." - Travel + Leisure Editors

I was craving Portuguese Tart and found this cafe and decided to stop over to try it. It's quite impressive with lots of a variety of cakes. We decided to try their Portuguese tart and their chicken Portuguese pie before we go to our bakery, which we normally bought the tart across the street. I like the tart is not too sweet and flaky, and their pie is ok. So we decided to get some more different cakes to take home to share with our kids. Recommended to try this place if it's happens to pass Petersham

Visited on Good Friday with the family. It’s a busy little café with indoor seating—cozy but quite cramped. There’s also outdoor seating available, which helps with the crowd. They offer a great selection of cakes, pastries, pies, and Portuguese tarts. Coffee was good, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Parking is limited, which can be a bit tricky. Looking forward to coming back next time we’re in the area!

This bakery is beautifully styled with a blue and white theme flowing through from the chairs and tables to the bakery boxes. Great coffee and fabulous fresh, warm and crispy Portuguese tarts. We also enjoyed the syrupy orange roulade. Their bakery boxes are so cute that it’s hard to resist taking some tarts home for later…

First time to visit. Lots of selection, good coffee. Not related to the real Belem in portugal. There Portuguese tart pretty good close enough to the original Portuguese tart from Portugal

If you are keen on Portuguese Tarts I would recommmed this as the best in Sydney. Sweet Belem in Petersham. I got there right when the shop opened and was first in line. I picked up six pastel de natas, fresh out of the oven — still warm, golden, and dusted with cinnamon. Yep, pretty yum. The custard was silky, rich, and just the right level of sweet, nestled in a crisp, flaky pastry that shattered perfectly. It was genuinely one of the best eating experiences I’ve had in a long time. Very cute shop front as well, pastel case and bags. Sweet Belem Absolutely worth the trip, and an essential stop for anyone in Sydney who loves Portuguese pastels.

These were so good! Perfect flaky crust with the creamy baked custard with just the right level of sweetness. Brought me right back to my travels in Portugal.

I always come here for my sweet tooth fix. I love the cream filled doughnuts & Portuguese tarts. I was disappointed however in the Molotov, not being anywhere near how it's originally made and the corn bread was tough to eat. Apart from that, it's still good to visit for other goodies.

Nice little Cafe with plenty of sweet food choices. We have had the chocolate croissant that had very generous amounts of spreadable chocolate inside. Coffee we've ordered was also as we've asked.

Yelp
Sweet Belem seems popular, always someone in there My rating is what I ordered I believe because there is too many sweet options in here Tried the pineapple cake, strange texture and taste, not sure if I tasted any pineapple! The Chila tart was strange also,it looks like strings of shredded coconut but it isn't. It's sticky and stringy and has a strong taste which my taste buds didn't enjoy I So far, pretty bad experience but I'll re review if I come back

Yelp
Best cake and coffee in the inner west of Sydney. Large range of cakes and tarts to choose from with great coffee. Busy shop but the service is good.

Yelp
A friend actually introduced me to this place. A cute Italy style patisserie. Great coffee, great service. Excuse my 'shouting' for a moment, however it is those PORTUGUESE TARTS that are a hit. I met up with a friend at around 2:30pm on a Saturday afternoon, and it looked like the heavens were looking after us as there were only two tarts left. They are worth the fuss - they are sooooo delicious. Then again Petersham is home to the Portugese, and for me this Inner West haven is the home of the iconic Portuguese Tart with cinnamon! NB: Hi guys, Internet issues so will upload the picture later!

Yelp
Petersham may be famed for its Portuguese chicken, but there is one other thing that Sydney's Little Portugal specialises in, and that's patisseries - particularly, and naturally, the Portuguese tart. I first discovered this place on my way home from the Petersham Festival a few years ago, insisting to my Italian boyfriend that going to a Portuguese Festival without getting a Portuguese tart would be like going to the Italian Festa without getting a cannoli. Sacrilege, he agreed, and we joined the line coming out of Sweet Belem Cake Boutique, sure that this was a good sign. It was, and we exited the shop with two Sweet Belem Tarts (aka Portugese tarts) for $3 each. When I went back recently, the shop was obviously far quieter than during the Petersham Festival, but it still delivered - the staff were friendly as ever and the fresh (and sizeable) Creme Caramel was delightful and only $4.80. Whilst Sweet Belem has nothing particularly fancy about it, it's a great place to sample some of Portugal's sweet treats (especially after a lunch of Portugese chicken from across the road).

Yelp
This is a beautiful little boutique bakery with all sorts of find-looking desserts. Their glass cases contain some sweet, hand-crafted delicacies. And the cafe looks like just the sort of place you would linger and gossip and partake of crumbly little bits of baked goodness. But I'll admit that in the several times I've been here the only thing I've ever had are their Portugese tarts. Dear god, they're fantastic. Creamy and delicious and browned just right and with a bit of cinnamon on top to set them off. Oh, man. I wonder what time they open in the morning? Note: they're a little fussy about what you call their tarts, they. They're technically named "Sweet Belem Tarts". Asking for Portugese Tarts will also probably work. But DO NOT call them egg tarts; you will get a stern reprimand and a lesson about why they DO NOT make egg tarts here.

Yelp
Having been to the birthplace of the pastéis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) in Santa Maria de Belém in Lisbon, I can say that here they are equally as good (though perhaps the experience lacks in comparison). Fresh, still warm from the oven, with a sprinkle of cinnamon - yum! Other baked stuffs here are also 'ken fantastic (particularly the little sweet custard sandwiches, which I have temporarily forgotten the name of). Coffee is also consistently good.

Yelp
I have loved this place since I first came and after so many years and change of hands, I still love it. There is such a huge array of goodies here, from cakes to tarts to pastries with a few savoury ones amongst all the delectable sweets. The favourites are their portuguese tarts & nutella filled ones. But i also love their donuts - a more dough fried bread with with salted caramel or dulce de leche. The mille feuille is also amazing with generous amount of custard as is the almond and hazelnut tart. Actually everything is great and served with a smile!

Yelp
These are seriously delicious cakes and pastries. The pastry is second to none on the Portuguese tarts.Do yourself a favour and try Sydney's best. Cafe serves reasonably decent coffee too but avoid Saturday mornings unless you want a long wait as the queues can be a bit much.

Yelp
Yummy Portuguese tarts that live up to the hype. I've been to Portugal and these are better than those I ate there. The other cakes and sweets look Devine... Worth a visit!!

Yelp
I adore this place, so many gorgeous cakes with the Portuguese tart being a highlight of course. Coffee was okay, grumpy barista around the corner much better but good enough to compliment my sweet tooth

Yelp
I dare you to come here and not leave with a bag of goodies. The quality of the pastries is consistently good, and it appears they're baked daily. The famous Portugese tarts are deservedly lusted after. You can have a coffee, too, and the staff is always pleasant. Yum.
