It was my husband's day off and he felt like some Jerk Chicken, so we decided to go to Sweet Spice (SS) on our lunch date while the kiddos were in school. I had tried one of their beef patties at the Food Truck Festival last year, which was good, but I didn't get a true sense of their food, so this time, I was super excited to try a variety of their items.
- Parking -
Center lot. It's located in the same strip of businesses as Savannah Filipino Authentic Cuisine and the old location for Joe's Homemade. SS sits on the corner, right by Waters Avenue.
- Vibe -
A small, modest Mom and Pop shop with a handful of tables. Every inch of space is used there. There are a row of about 3 tables on either side and people line up in the middle. You go straight up to the counter in the back, order and pay and then take a seat or take it to go. Just stay straight and move forward, do a pivot after you order and sit down or move on out!
- TLC -
There was a middle aged lady working when we arrived just before a rush and she was all smiles and so sweet and genuine. She was packing the food and another lady was at the cash. They both moved the line along quickly.

Small Jerk Chicken with Rice & Peas and Mac & Cheese - My husband ordered this obviously, since that was why we went there in the first place and SS did not let us down! Jerk was actually super moist and more stewed then grilled/baked which I am used to the latter method, which sometimes tends be dry. The Mac was fab too! Elbow macaroni with ooey gooey cheesy-ness. The Rice and Peas! Mmm, I could just eat that with anything. So simple, but so good!
Sweet Spice Sampler - I ordered this one of course, so I could try as many things as I could and I wish the Sampler plate just included a scoop of EVERYTHING, but alas, I had to narrow it down to 3 so I picked Oxtail (my fave), Brown Stew Chicken which the lady in front of me suggested and Curry Chicken with Rice & Peas and Sweet Plantains. HOLY MOLY. My container felt like it was 5 lbs. It was so heavy! I could have probably done a workout lifting that. So where do I begin? Oxtail was delicious with whatever brown sauce they cooked it in. The Curry Chicken had a good strong, curry taste, not watered down. And the best surprise was the Brown Stew Chicken! I've never had it before, but it had a slight bit of sweetness to it and it was almost as if it had been battered lightly in something and then stewed so the sauce had this nice thickness to it. Thank you, Stranger Lady for the recommendation! The Sweet Plantains were perfection and again, those Rice & Peas that sits underneath all these saucy meats is even better because it soaks up all the sauce! So good!
So, again, they are generous with their portions and for the price, it's a great deal! My husband and I both ate what we could and then we ended up consolidating our boxes and we left with his container full of food!
- Kiddos -
No kiddos on this visit, but they would have torn it up! I did notice that they had 2 options for the kiddos on the menu and only $4.99. Sweet deal! Definitely want to go back and take them with us!
- Heads Up -
It gets pretty tight in there with all the patrons, so if you have personal space issues, I suggest you take it to go.
Generous portions, great price, friendly service and more importantly, food that makes you quiet. No time for talking when stuff is this good.
Note to self for future: We could probably share a Large plate or Sampler plate next time and add something else like the patties or another app. Also, I want to try the Coconut cake, because they didn't have any in stock on our visit.
