Swinton Bivouac, Nr Masham, North Yorkshire, England - Explore & Book

"A 10-minute drive from the sleepy market town of Masham in the 20,000-acre Swinton Park Estate, overlooking rolling meadows dotted with sheep and criss-crossed by dry stone walls, stands Swinton Bivouac. Approached up a rough track, it centres on a restored farmhouse accommodating a reception area and café, while in the surrounding pastures and woodland you’ll find an unconventional choice of overnight lodgings: 7 canvas yurts sleeping 2-4 and 6 tastefully furnished timber lodges for up to 6. The mood is informal and relaxed, appealing to couples and families in search of an authentic yet comfortable back-to-nature adventure. Great attention to detail is paid in everything from the rustic décor to the activities on offer. Swinton Bivouac also hosts groups (there’s a larger Loft sleeping 10) and organises woodland weddings at the Druid’s Temple, a 200-year-old folly set among the pines nearby. There’s plenty to do: hiking, cycling, visiting castles and waterfalls, and tasting famous Dales produce such as Wensleydale cheese and Black Sheep beer. And you don’t have to go far - trails lead out from the site, and there's a homely café for those who don’t want to self-cater, serving delicious food prepared from local ingredients. Highs A peaceful, rural location with sweeping views across the valley and moorland - restful for adults and liberating for kids Ideal for families, with a play area and organised activities (crafts, nature trails). Yurts have a double bed and 2 singles; lodges have 2 doubles and 2 singles Generous breakfasts, lunches and dinners in the cosy café, plus local beer; takeaway meals and picnics are available with 24 hours’ notice Friendly and welcoming staff, who are always ready to chat but never intrusive Plenty of outdoor activities in the surrounding countryside, with the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park on the doorstep Lows Don’t expect luxury: the yurts and lodges have no electricity, and the yurts share a communal shower block (lodges have their own bathrooms and private hot tubs) It’s remote, and city slickers might feel a little marooned - no nightlife, no telly, no in-room WiFi, just fire pits and star-gazing after dark You’ll need to be reasonably nimble to get in and out of the beds in the lodges, arranged over 3 levels and reached by a steep ladder; you might also risk bumping your head in the top and bottom levels Full pre-payment and a security deposit is required The yurts are closed October to mid-March annually" - Jane Foster

The location is amazing beautiful views over the Yorkshire Moors. Waking up in your cabin opening the curtains to see the views is the best experience. .The bivouac was extremely comfortable with running cold water. The wood burning stove more than adequate we cooked oor bacon in it on the last morning. Spotlessly clean with nice touches treats for the dog little presents for us. The camp cooking area was clean well maintained having everything you needed. There was a barbecue we cooked chicken on gas very easy. The bed was more than comfy spacious the cabin also had a wood burner. We ordered a meal for our arrival cooked in the camp kitchen tasted good. Lots of beautiful walks in including the Druid Temple. It’s not a hotel it’s is rustic but very comfortable experience. No complaints would recommend to anyone as staff are also very friendly. The highlight was seeing a Pine Marten on my way to the guest lounge not something you see very often or at all.

What a fantastic place to stay. Every detail was thought about. The tree lodge was exceptional. We are a family of 2 adults and 4 children of various ages. The kids were never bored because there is so much open space to use. Everything is eco friendly, even the welcome packs were recyclable and the kids got a little badge each and caps to wear as well as a s’mores pack which went down a treat!||Such beautiful surroundings and a wonderful place to stay with the friendliest staff, goats and chickens…we even got to bring home some fresh eggs.||Would positively recommend and we look forward to returning in the future.

We stayed as a family of 4 in a tree lodge and had a superb weekend. We loved the hot tub and sauna, going for walks round the Druids temple, watching the moon rise over the dales and lounging in a hammock for sunset. The cafe and resident lounge were great for a meal out and to recharge phones. We also explored the Swinton Estate gardens which are incredible and swam in the coffin pond. We had lunch at the Terrace Restaurant which felt high end but also really welcoming, the food was delicious and the service was really attentive and friendly. Overall such an enjoyable weekend.

We absolutely loved our staycation to Swinton Bivouac! It’s perfectly suited for families, there is plenty to do including walks to the Druid temple, playground, craft room and football field. It felt incredibly safe and it was a joy to see our two young children roam freely in the field after roasting marshmallows on the outdoor fire. The welcome gifts for the children were a lovely surprise and we appreciated the small personal touches which made the stay feel special. We chose a 2 bedroom yurt which was perfect for us and gave us just the right amount of space for a family of 4. The communal kitchen was really handy and we enjoyed doing our own BBQ one evening. There is so much to do in the area including walks and bike rides; we walked to the Swinton Estate (3 miles) and enjoyed the family swim session followed by a meal in the Terrace bar. One evening, we went for a meal in Masham (5 mins drive), it is a sweet, quaint village with plenty of pubs and shops. Light water Valley is 30 minutes away which is great for younger children! The only downside of our stay was the cleanliness of the hot tub which I feel could be improved, I don’t think the water had been drained recently so it did feel unhygienic. Apart from that, it was a perfect stay and we’ll definitely be back!

We loved our stay in the tree lodges. The kids loved the tree lodge, football area and hot tub. The lodge is surrounded by beautiful open countryside. The sauna was great and we loved the little gifts left for the children. There were few niggles such as the hot tub and not been pre lit despite paying extra for this but the staff in the cafe were great.

Called in for a coffee after a walk with the family to the Druids Temple. Lovely reception from the guy behind the counter. It was very quiet when we visited, but I was impressed to see that the cafe is open until 8.00 PM. Very nice coffee, lovely comfortable setting. Highly recommend a visit to the Druids Temple too, but I'll do a separate post for this.

We stayed in Cowslip, one of the beautiful yurts. Lovely location, clean accommodation, and one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept in. It’s a bit expensive, but totally worth it. Staff were great. On site facilities great. The one pain (unavoidable in many respects): insects. Lots of flies, lots of wasps. It didn’t spoil our break; the wasps… maybe because of the time of year, we’re not particularly aggressive. Little can be done where the yurts are positioned, but I feel there could be greater countermeasures in the cafe. Nevertheless, this was our third trip and we’ll visit again. Highly recommended.

I had an amazing stay with my family at Winston Bivouac. I didn’t not know this place before until I searches “hot tub” in booking.com and it popped up in my screen. I was attracted by the photos and I booked the accommodation immediately. It did not disappoint me. The place was clean and the view was amazing. We stargazed in front of our yurt and it was amazing. Our children were really excited to see many starsssssss in the sky. We must come again! ||||As there were limited choices in booking.com, We could only book an yurt with tent and an apartment. However I found that they have a website and enough reservation of accommodation. I will book the accommodation in their website next time 😆
