Swinton Bivouac, Nr Masham, North Yorkshire, England - Explore & Book

"A 10-minute drive from the sleepy market town of Masham in the 20,000-acre Swinton Park Estate, overlooking rolling meadows dotted with sheep and criss-crossed by dry stone walls, stands Swinton Bivouac. Approached up a rough track, it centres on a restored farmhouse accommodating a reception area and café, while in the surrounding pastures and woodland you’ll find an unconventional choice of overnight lodgings: 7 canvas yurts sleeping 2-4 and 6 tastefully furnished timber lodges for up to 6. The mood is informal and relaxed, appealing to couples and families in search of an authentic yet comfortable back-to-nature adventure. Great attention to detail is paid in everything from the rustic décor to the activities on offer. Swinton Bivouac also hosts groups (there’s a larger Loft sleeping 10) and organises woodland weddings at the Druid’s Temple, a 200-year-old folly set among the pines nearby. There’s plenty to do: hiking, cycling, visiting castles and waterfalls, and tasting famous Dales produce such as Wensleydale cheese and Black Sheep beer. And you don’t have to go far - trails lead out from the site, and there's a homely café for those who don’t want to self-cater, serving delicious food prepared from local ingredients. Highs A peaceful, rural location with sweeping views across the valley and moorland - restful for adults and liberating for kids Ideal for families, with a play area and organised activities (crafts, nature trails). Yurts have a double bed and 2 singles; lodges have 2 doubles and 2 singles Generous breakfasts, lunches and dinners in the cosy café, plus local beer; takeaway meals and picnics are available with 24 hours’ notice Friendly and welcoming staff, who are always ready to chat but never intrusive Plenty of outdoor activities in the surrounding countryside, with the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park on the doorstep Lows Don’t expect luxury: the yurts and lodges have no electricity, and the yurts share a communal shower block (lodges have their own bathrooms and private hot tubs) It’s remote, and city slickers might feel a little marooned - no nightlife, no telly, no in-room WiFi, just fire pits and star-gazing after dark You’ll need to be reasonably nimble to get in and out of the beds in the lodges, arranged over 3 levels and reached by a steep ladder; you might also risk bumping your head in the top and bottom levels Full pre-payment and a security deposit is required The yurts are closed October to mid-March annually" - Jane Foster

We spent the weekend staying in two tree lodges as a group of 11 friends. The facilities were perfect. We had everything we needed. ||For food we visited the cafe a couple of times and really enjoyed it. ||The hot tubs at the lodges were fantastic and we spent y a lot of time enjoying the outdoor hammocks. ||We would definitely recommend a stay at Swinton estate.

We had a fabulous 2 day stay at the tree lodge. I loved the hot tub and sauna and the beds were really comfortable. It would be very tight for 6 adults, but we were three and that was fine. Staff were fantastic. I would recommend it.

We decided to give the yurt lodge a go this year, the yurt, lodge, facilities were all excellent we had a great 4 day break. Cafe staff so helpful with our 7 and 11 year olds who were adamant they want to breakfast on their own in the cafe (waffles were a favourite) only disappointment was the communal hot tub it's much smaller than the ones at the treehouses and the 2 evenings we wanted to go in it was filthy so we didn't use it which was a shame. That said everything else was fabulous and already booked for next year.

Fabulous natural retreat in the heart of North Yorkshire. The swinton estate has been a real treat to share a girls weekend. Walks within the vast parkland, outdoor swimming in the beautiful lily pond, pampering in the spa, finished with a delicious meal at the bistro from a vibrant and exciting menu.||Will definitely be back…

DANGEROUSLY UNACCEPTABLE: Gas Leak & Appalling Quality at Beauvoic Tree Lodge - A Ruined Family Celebration||Overall Rating: 1/5 (Abysmal - AVOID)||Our family's highly anticipated stay at Swinton Estate's Beauvoir Tree Lodge, meant to be a special birthday celebration for my daughter, devolved into an absolute nightmare. The forest off grid cabin experience promised by Swinton Estate were shattered, replaced by a shocking combination of dire safety concerns and utterly substandard accommodation.||The most critical and horrifying issue was the discovery of a gas leak within the lodge. This is not just inconvenient; it is life-threateningly dangerous, particularly when small children are sleeping there. The sheer irresponsibility of allowing guests, let alone families, into an environment with a gas leak is completely unacceptable and frankly, horrifying. This immediate and severe hazard forced us to cut short our trip, ruining my daughter's birthday celebration and cancelling our entire family getaway. The emotional toll of this dangerous incident, and seeing my daughter's pure disappointment, is immeasurable.||Beyond this critical safety breach, the lodge itself was a profound disappointment. We expected a comfortable, off-grid forest cabin experience, but what we found was shockingly poor quality across the board. The bedding was frankly disgusting, far from anything resembling a premium stay. The mattress toppers were all twisted and uncomfortable, and the pillows felt stuffed with anything but adequate material, making a decent night's sleep impossible. This is not the experience, it's a basic disregard for guest comfort.||For the premium price charged, one expects far more than a dangerously unsafe environment and a total lack of basic comfort and quality. It felt as though Swinton Estate has made minimal effort in equipping and maintaining these lodges, relying solely on its brand name and location to justify exorbitant rates. The illusion of luxury and "forest living" simply does not exist within the Beauvoir Tree Lodge.||We are utterly gutted. Our family trip was ruined, and more importantly, our safety was compromised. This place is not equipped for safe or quality living, let alone luxury. We strongly urge anyone considering this lodge to reconsider. We have demanded a full refund, as this experience was a complete disaster from start to finish. Shame on Swinton Estate for putting guests in such a perilous and uncomfortable situation.

While waiting for my husband and father-in-law, who were doing axe throwing at Swinton Park, we decided to visit the café at Swinton Bivouac. We were told to pay £4 for parking, even though we came for coffee and breakfast. Although everything was pricey, I thought it might be justifiable given the cost of running a place like this in the middle of nowhere. But the food and coffee were disappointing. My scrambled eggs were seriously overcooked and very dry - I couldn’t quite believe a café or restaurant could get something so simple so wrong. The coffee wasn’t nice either. It tasted instant, although I assume it wasn’t. My husband and his dad came to join us afterwards and, despite ordering more food and drinks as they were hungry and thirsty, he was told to pay another £4 for parking. I really regret spending that kind of money for such poor quality food and drink at high prices. Absolutely not recommended.

Review just for the Cafe: Great things: Service, lemon tart, coffee and steak pie. Really poor quality and overpriced: Butternut squash soup - very watery. Flat bread with pulled pork and pulled pork burger - we had to send it back as pulled pork was mushy, watery and slimey consistency. Not a dry, nice roasted pulled strands of meat. And both dishes does not include any sides. So it is overpriced for what it is. Pickled cucumbers and apples topped on flatbread were so vinegary, that you can not taste the difference of what it is, just pure vinegar. We only took a photo of pulled pork flat bread as other foods came much later.

It’s a lovely tree lodge with no electricity just gas. It’s simple inside but that’s what the experience is. The communication is poor which seems to be the case for Swinton estate. We asked for the hot tub warming up on arrival (which is an add on ££) as our children couldn’t wait. We had to check in at 4pm and queue up in the cafe which was about ten minutes and it had been lost in communication despite them ringing us a few days prior and asking if we wanted it. Even 4.5 hours into checking in the water is nowhere near warm enough to get in so we have booked a night and completely missed out on the amenity that we booked it for. You clearly need to be in all day sorting the hot tub with wood to heat it and yet the lodge itself doesn’t have a lot of “living room” for children so we will struggle to stay nearby/ keep on top of the fire to enjoy the hot tub tomorrow. For context we have come with 3 adults and 2 children and there isn’t enough room inside for us to actually stay in as it’s so weather dependent and we haven’t been lucky. Cafe menu and food looked nice if you’re walking around but just be cautious about communication and maybe go somewhere with more things to do in winter or colder months with children.
