Swissôtel Le Plaza Basel

My stay here was wonderful. The room was spacious and clean. Breakfast was good with lot of variety. I would definitely recommend a stay here when in the Basel area. The AC/heat worked well. I know a lot of times European hotels feel hot and stuffy to Americans. I had no problems. There was always good air flow.

We were pleasantly surprised with the Marriott. The staff were helpful, room comfortable, and breakfast varied and outstanding.|The location was great and we used the free tram which stops nearby. markets and restaurants are convenient.|The room had a frig and coffee maker. There is a great underused workout room, sauna and relaxation room. |The hotel is immaculate and appears like new.

If you’re here because it was the only option, you’re burning points, or you needed to earn some, then you already know why you chose this hotel. The property is on the periphery of Basel's charming city center (the place you actually want to be). It is the main embarkation point for Rhine River cruise operators. In fact, you might mistake the hotel lobby for the Viking River Cruise HQ. It is packed with these modern-day Huck Finns, many on their first trip to Europe, all arriving with stentorian voices, overstuffed bags, and heroic appetites. They act like their ship will be underprovisioned and need to carb-load before manning the oarlocks. Merely watching the action at the breakfast buffet may convince you to start that diet you've been contemplating. On the way down to breakfast, an overly fed set of couples complained about the size of the hotel's elevators. Trust me, the elevators are normal. In fact, they are large by European standards. ||Rooms are tidy and functional but carry the unmistakable industrial vibe of their convention-center surroundings. The furnishings fit Marriott’s new global mandate for austerity: clean lines, neutral colors, and seating that seems deliberately engineered to discourage lingering. Whoever leads interior design for Marriott could easily pivot to designing correctional facilities.||The staff are unfailingly friendly and genuinely helpful, but you can sense their fatigue (defeat) from addressing the constant demands of their new American friends. And if you’re hoping your Marriott status will unlock an upgrade or special treatment, put that Titanium Elite card back in your wallet. Privilege and priority go to the river-cruise partners. Overall, meh.

I’ve stayed at the Basel Marriott several times for work as a Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite member, and it’s become one of my favorite properties in the region. The service is consistently excellent – the staff are warm, professional, and genuinely welcoming on every stay.||||Breakfast is generous and high quality, and the executive lounge is a real standout, with a comprehensive selection of food and drinks that makes it easy to unwind or get a bit of work done. On my most recent visit, I was upgraded to a fantastic two-room suite on the top floor, which was spacious, comfortable, and very much appreciated.||||I fully expect to keep returning to this hotel. The only caveat I’d offer is that it sells out frequently, even outside major events like Art Basel, and in my experience the 48-hour guarantee isn’t always honored in practice. My advice: book as early as you can. Otherwise, this is an excellent choice for both business and leisure stays in Basel.

very comfortable hotel. Location is on the "less desirable" side of the river and, considering this is Switzerland, take the 'less desirable' definition with the grain of salt. It is adjacent to a congress hall and it was a fair week in Basel, so loud music and lights were going on across the street. Saying that, inside, hotel was super quiet and orderly. Room was large and comfortable with all the amenities. I, unfortunately, had no view, but alas. Housekeeping was prompt and solid. I did not get to try any of the hotel amenities. It is next to tram stations, that can get you anywhere and you do get a ticket/pass to use for the duration of the stay. But Basel is a lovely walkable town, so I mostly walked everywhere. Hotel is a 5 min walk from the river, so one can cross to the busy center very fast. You can also take a tram the other way and end up in Germany, which is really cool. 5 min trip via tram to the train station that can take you anywhere in Switzerland, and to France. Easier than taking taxis and cheaper, esp with that pass. That is the best way to get in and out of Zurich airport: take the train to Zurich, switch to the train to the airport. Whole trip is comfy and not expensive and you get in the airport well within 1.5 hrs tops.

I stayed at Marriott Basel for a week for a business trip. A colleague said that it felt like you’re back in the U.S. the moment you step into the hotel from outside. I do agree with that statement. I appreciate the familiarity of the hotel and amenities for an extended stay. The rooms were very comfortable and the rooms were pretty quiet for a restful stay. The shower was warm pretty instantaneously. The breakfast buffet had many options and I miss it already.

Lovely hotel and great location. Room was comfortable and high Marriott standard and hotel staff were super friendly and professional. I would recommend and return on next business trip.

The hotel is a nice hotel with friendly staff and clean and modern. I have to say though, nearly £80 for a couple to have breakfast just can't be justified under any circumstances. Even if it is pre-booked, it's still the better part of £60 for a couple. We just went out and found a local family run cafe where we had an equally amazing breakfast for a quarter of the price. ||The little things let the hotel down a bit too:||For some strange reason, no fresh or even UHT milk was available in the room, only powder milk. That's strange for a high quality hotel. ||We ordered a snack of spring rolls the night we arrived but they were like warm, bordering being cold. ||It's a pity that these small things spoil what is otherwise a good hotel with good staff. ||But come on Marriott, you have to stop taking the P**s with your near £40 per person breakfast if not pre-booked!!!

Who would design a bathroom with the toilet smack dab behind the door??? Location is convenient for business people who might have to attend something at the Exhibition Square, but it requires a tram ride to get to the main part of the city and to walk along the Rhine River. However, a transportation pass is provided by the hotel and the tram stop is either on the corner (#14) or across the street (#6). Both get you to the town center. There is no evening turn down service so we had to request extra towels and a roll of toilet paper. Staff is very friendly and the breakfast that was included was okay. Unfortunately, dining al fresco is a problem everywhere because smoking is just soooooooooooooooooo chic in Europe. They must have some special deal with Tauck because the ending cruise people were there at the same time that the beginning cruise people were there.

This review is for the hotel itself. I've spent several weeks staying here and have found the service to be impeccable - they are always friendly, accommodating, and helpful when you need something extra. The rooms are very clean (although the size can vary quite a bit and some do need updating) and the beds are comfortable. The downstairs restaurant (see review) is fantastic for both breakfast and dinner, and room service is higher in quality than it really needs to be. Overall, a nice place to stay when you're in Basel.

The hotel was great stayed there after a Viking cruise late December of this year. The room was on the 5th floor and it was big, clean, nicely furnished and comfortable. The hotel was well managed and the restaurant's food was fabulous and service great. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 was because my room overlooked the roof of the lower portion of the hotel and I was too tired to from my trip to move to a new room.

Great place!! Excellent food, lovely employees & big modern clean rooms! Highly recommendable for everyone :) And btw, your transportation ticket for basel is included! Additionally: Free wifi, 24hrs service & great location!

We were given unlimited use passes for the trams and lots of tips and suggestions to make the most of our visit. The staff was extremely helpful. The location is central and the Messeplatz tram station is just outside the hotel. At the end of our stay, we took the clean and efficient public transport to the airport. Our room was clean, featured a large tub and decent wifi. We were impressed and would stay here again. Our room, 328, was at the end of the hotel furthest from the tram stops and street noise was never an issue.

Clean, spacious, centrally-located. Overall, a good experience. Was impressed by the room and bed size, which were large by European standards, average by US standards. The room was well-appointed, however the TV was difficult to figure out how to use (a note saying you have to hit the "Pay TV" button would have helped) and there were no English-speaking/transmitting channels. The Air Conditioning struggled to keep the room cool and completely failed in the gym. Totally inadequate cooling in the fitness area, although the fitness center is pretty fabulous! The breakfast buffet was generous and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable, yet not flexible in making changes to reservations (part of my trip was personal, over a weekend, and they refused to even look up the possibility of reducing the rate of my room to the weekend rate, let alone cancel the last two nights, even a week in advance).

I agree with the previous review. The Swissotel is a pretty nice stay. I've always found the concierge and front desk personnel very friendly and very helpful. They do not hesitate to assist with my flight check-in, provide directions to nearby destinations, recommend good restaurants, etc. While a little pricey, the breakfast buffet is top notch and offers nice selection of hot and cold foods. The steak house at the hotel is also pretty good, and a good default restaurant if you cant decide where to eat. I have always found the rooms to be clean and beds to be comfortable. And the location cant be beat as its right across from the convention center and walking distance from Roche and Novartis (if traveling for business) and the downtown area for shopping and good eats/drinks/museums. For work or for pleasure, I'd definitely stay here again.

At CHF200+, this is the worst 5-star hotel ever! The room is so noisy that I am writing this at 6am while still staying at the hotel, but what else is there to do when you've been woken up for an hour by the sound of the trams which is so loud that you might as well be laying directly on the tracks. This doesn't help when there were people talking in front until wee hours of the night. Given window has zero sound proofing, obviously it sounded like drunk people having a shouting match. To add salt to the wounds, the room stinks like cigarette smell covered by some scent-absolving chemical. I think this hotel has been spoiled by its business account with Roche. Time to shake things up and start telling everyone at work to take the business elsewhere!
