We stayed at the Swissôtel Nankai Osaka as seasoned travelers with Accor Diamond status and extensive experience at five-star hotels worldwide. Unfortunately, this property did not live up to that standard and felt much closer to a three-star experience overall.
The biggest issue was the room condition. The rooms are very dated, with old brown furniture and no modern updates. There were no convenient plug-ins or USB ports for newer devices, which is surprising for a hotel of this category. The room itself felt small, and the bathroom layout was particularly awkward. The toilet is positioned right next to the shower with little privacy, making it difficult to move around comfortably. The tub-and-shower combo is outdated, with a removable shower head only—no rain shower or walk-in shower. Worst of all, the shower door only closes halfway, so water inevitably ends up all over the bathroom floor.
The executive lounge breakfast was extremely basic and not worth using. We ended up going to the main restaurant instead, but the wait times were long, especially during peak hours. Service throughout the hotel was hit or miss, which stood out negatively given how consistently excellent service is elsewhere in Japan.
After we shared our disappointment with our travel broker, the hotel was informed and kindly offered us a suite. While we appreciated the gesture, the improvement was limited. The suite was larger and slightly more modern, but essentially the same design—the brown furniture was simply stained grey. The same bathroom issues remained, along with the lack of updated plug-ins.
The gym is average at best, with older equipment, and it’s open to non-hotel guests, making it busier than what you’d expect for a hotel gym. The pool is nice for serious fitness swimmers but not particularly suitable for kids or leisure use.
While many people praise the hotel’s location, we didn’t find it to be as convenient as advertised. Taking everything into account, this property did not meet our expectations for a five-star hotel, especially given our Accor status and prior experiences. Overall, we would not choose to stay here again.
