On the Grid : Sydney Harbour Bed and Breakfast

"For those wanting to escape the refined, clean cut hotel room for an authentic accommodation in a 100 year old heritage listed home, the Sydney Harbour Bed and Breakfast is for you. The nine room bed and breakfast has stayed much the same since being built due to strict housing codes in the area that prevents any if the building to be changed and the location is fantastic for those wanting accessibility to the harbour and transport. It's a family run business and extremely welcoming. Truly a home away from home." - Grandma's Bar for 8 Hospitality

The Sydney Harbour B&B has (had?) much to commend it when we stayed there for 3 nights in 2019. It is centrally located in The Rocks historic district, priced low, and offers lots of atmosphere from their own two historic buildings. That should have earned it 5 stars from me. But it earned barely 3 stars from my wife due to several things. It was badly in need of a vacuuming when we arrived, but the management was unable to vacuum until the next day. They did not even have an on-site vacuum cleaner that we could use ourselves(?!) Another thing was that the bathroom was out-of-suite and rather dated; although not shared it was not private. Another item for both of us was the poorly connected in-room air-conditioning ducting and seal to the outdoors. A very cool place to stay for people with less expectations, but not so much for seasoned travelers used to pristine accommodations.

The location is excellent for the price, and the staff are very accommodating. There's no elevator, so be prepared for a few stairs. The rooms are a bit dated, but they are clean and comfortable. Shared bathrooms, but this is common in the area. The bathrooms are also very clean and spacious. Breakfast was fantastic, as you are given an all you can eat wide selection from fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, roasted potatoes, cereal, bagels, and other food items. My only complaint is that it can be a bit difficult to find, as it's located up off of the street level and only has a small sign that's hard to see. Fantastic experience overall and would definitely recommend to those looking for a bit more peace, quiet, and comfort in the Rocks area.

We had 5 days in Cove Cottage which is separate from the original building and down a lane. None of the photographs look like our room. Items of furniture were obviously moved in to make the sites photos look better than the real thing. A floor rug would make the lounge area a bit more comfortable. The television in the bedroom should be wall mounted so that the access to the bathroom isn't impeded by the round table that it is sitting on. This would also allow the step down in the floor to be negotiated more easily.||The rooms were full of mosquitoes as the screens on the doors were damaged. We could not use our courtyard as it was full of weeds, broken chairs and had a piece of outdoor carpet stretched across the fence for privacy.||The location is ideal for walking the Rocks area which has heaps of things to do (Harbour Bridge Climb) is a must do. Local pubs are plentiful and have good meals. ||Staff were friendly and helpful.||Breakfast became a bit monotonous with scrambled egg, bacon and baked beans every morning. Perhaps some tomato and sausages could be provided on alternate days instead for a change.||Overall the experience of staying here was o.k but the rooms were very grubby and tired. It is time for a clean up

Great price for the location. We were exploring Sydney without a car and the location was perfect for us to get to walk to the opera house, the Royal botanical gardens, the Chinese friendship garden, the Queen Victoria Building, and Mrs. Macquarie's Chair. Our bed was comfortable. We upgraded to have a bathroom en suite and it was beautiful. Breakfast was a pretty good spread for a continental breakfast. We enjoyed getting to try Vegemite on our toast as well.

Location is excellent but that’s all it has going for it. They seriously need to hire professional cleaners who can give the rooms a thorough deep clean. Our room was disgusting. Thick dust under furniture, mold and hair in the bathroom. There was a double bed squeezed into the kitchen area !! and the place is so noisy, creaking floorboards, people talking, running water etc. The breakfast is disappointing, funny tasting bacon & eggs, the toast is ok but takes a long time then there’s the obstacle course to get to a table as room is so tiny. The photos of the building/rooms are so misleading, make it look a lovely place/lovely rooms and the reviews that some people have written, makes you wonder who wrote them. I love heritage buildings and this one could be nice if the layout was given some thought, the food improved and more importantly the cleanliness. They say they do the cleaning daily. Take a look at the photos, they speak for themselves. We were only there 2 nights so just put up with it. Definitely won't be going back.

Not good at all! My mum and I stayed here over a year ago and it was disgraceful. Righto so when we arrived at our hotel we couldn't settle into our room because our room had a major leak so the owners were busy cleaning it so we left our luggage behind and went to the piers at Circular Quay, we came back and eventually settled into our room we had a bit of a look around and it was disappointing there was a bed in the kitchen, the bathroom light wasn't working, the room at the very back of our hotel room had a door leading outside that wouldn't lock and we had a little seating area outside and a gate leading outside the gate door also wouldn't lock so we could've gotten broken into with no trouble at all and there was also a mini fridge in the very back of the room and it was broken and leaking so when I told the owners they said it was supposed to do that. Breakfast, at breakfast the toaster wasn't working properly had to toast the bread about 5 times to become actual toast really the only thing that was good at breakfast was the orange juice but that was just drinkable. So glad we got to leave the next day onto the cruise ship, we spoke to some over the people who also stayed at the hotel the same day as us and they also had a horrible experience and they aren't even from Australia. Very poor experience never again 😔

The B&B is run by a very nice couple. Absolutely top level of services and make you fee like back home. The house is a bit aged but the room is clean and neat. Shared bathroom is also very clean. Breakfast is good. They run the place with their hearts not just a business. Highly recommended. The entry (Blue door) is upstairs of Long Lane from Cumberland St, which is easy to miss, just need to pay attention to the sign.

I had an amazing stay at this bed and breakfast . From the very beginning when booking I had a few problems with the direct debit with the booking agency the owner quickly sorted it out for me. They were fantastic with Communications sending emails with instructions and directions before my stay . When I arrived I was seen to straight away the manager took my bags to my room gave me some brochures on Vivid which I was there to see, and told me how to get to different places ,he explained the breakfast and showed me how to get in and out of the different rooms. The room was immaculately clean the bathroom was large including a bath and shower accessories . The bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in I had a fantastic night's sleep with beautiful pillows and soft clean sheets , it had a large screen TV a walk in wardrobe with everything you needed, a hair dryer iron etc a nice heater in the room for winter & air conditioning for summer as well as an outside balcony to sit. The breakfast was simple but nice a selection of bread and cereal as well as fruit and yoghurt also bacon scrambled eggs and beans. I highly recommend this place the location is unbeatable close walking distance to Darling Harbour Circular Quay the Harbour Bridge the Opera House as well as pubs and train stations very Central , beautiful quiet place considering in the middle of the city I will 100% stay again very highly recommended.

Yelp
This place ignored my cancellation and refund request back in early May. Simply didn't reply. It was clear we were traveling from ANOTHER CONTINENT & would not be coming at all due to hmmm what was it?? Oh, yes, A GLOBAL PANDEMIC that stopped the entire world from traveling. Australia closed its borders (Perhaps the jolly Sydney Harbour B&B team don't read the news. Or watch TV. Or care.) Every single other Australian hotel CHEERFULLY refunded our deposits, except for this establishment. They ignored my request to cancel and get my money back and today sent an email with instructions on what to do when I check in. HELLO I WONT BE COMING THERES A PANDEMIC ON.Lowest marks for business ethics, follow-through & every type of customer interaction.

Yelp
This place has a lot of history, it's very quaint and in the way it is styled. The staff is very friendly and helpful. However we got the room facing the street and it was very noisy, especially at 4 AM with the street sweeper. There was a roach that I killed on the stairs the day I check in and it was still there the day I checked out two days later. They also went into my room unannounced while I was gone and did construction work, got plaster residue all over my luggage and clothes when they were working on the air-conditioning drain line and didn't say a word. The Inn is run down and in sore need of refurbishment. It was over priced for what I paid.

Yelp
Worst place ever. Please read my review on booking.com, written on October 29, 2019. We stayed in Lachlan room so I don't know how other rooms are. Based on comments, some rooms are nice. Our room was filthy - dust balls with hair mixed in; mold and rust in bathroom. Lots of mold in the shower - YUCK! Very close to a freeway offramp, so very noisy. Also, read comments the owner writes back to those that leave a negative review- blames writers of the reviews. We told him about the issues with the room immediately and in the three days we were there, you think he would have cared enough to come to the room to look. Just as filthy the last day of our stay as the first. I submitted pictures to booking.com and they refunded some our money and will bill the owner for it.
