I have such great memories of many youthful adventures climbing in New Hampshire, where I climbed when at university, about 45 years ago. When I had a chance to revisit for a single day, and when I didn’t succeed in finding a climbing partner on Facebook, I decided to find a guide through Synnott Mountaineering. It was a pleasure to spend the day climbing with Jimmy Surette.
The weather was sensational. Blue skies, sunny but not too hot, not too humid. Perfect day to get reacquainted with the crag. Jimmy is a great climber and guide. I knew of him from having read about his exploits of the 1980s and 1990s in Climbing magazine. I let him pick the routes, so we climbed a number of lines in the 5.8-5.11 range, both cracks and slab. It was just right for a person pushing 70, like me. He even put up with my taking a nap, early afternoon. During my nap, he had the pleasure of watching someone working the moves on Liquid Sky — the second 5.13 in the East Coast (after Cerberus, also first ascended by Jimmy Surette), put up by Jimmy in 1986. Later, that climber came over to chat about the route with Jimmy.
I’m not sure whether I’ll get another chance to revisit this crag, as I live now in New Zealand. Jimmy did an excellent job reminding me why I used to love climbing here so much. I would certainly hire him again.
