19 Best Restaurants in Bali, Offering Indonesian Classics, Vegan Tasting Menus, and More | Condé Nast Traveler

"After more than a decade cooking in the Netherlands, most recently at the helm of Pure C restaurant in Zeeland where he earned two Michelin stars, chef Syrco Bakker opened the much-anticipated Syrco BASÈ in Ubud early in 2024. The chef, whose grandparents originally hail from Indonesia, is laser focused on ingredient sourcing and sustainability, leaning heavily on local produce and cultivating a garden on site, which grows tomatoes, lemongrass, and more. Even some dishware and knives are made by local artisans. Inside the warm and minimalist space, guests can opt for one of three multi-course tasting menus, including a plant based option, or try the 14-course menu at Syrco BASÈ Ku, a chef’s counter within the restaurant." - Regan Stephens

This was the highlight of my Bali holiday. I love a degustation experience and have tried several in Ubud, Syrco is hands down my favorite so far. The restaurant decor, staff, and cuisine is world class. So much care and attention has clearly gone into making this an unforgettable dining experience. I had the lunch degustation and was so happy with every dish. The presentation is stunning and the flavours match. The entire meal was so perfectly balanced and such a lovely fusion of European techniques with local flavours. The cocktail pairing was absolutely worth it. The creativity and craft in those drinks was wonderful. You have to try their take on a spicy margarita. Yum! I finished with dessert in the upstairs lounge and could have happily spent another few hours up there sipping cocktails and enjoying the ambience. All the staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable so big thanks to you all for such a memorable foodie experience. I can’t wait to come back again with my whole family!

Syrco BASE delivers a refined, confident dining experience that feels quietly assured rather than overtly showy, and it deserves a full five-star rating. The space itself sets the mood immediately. Warm lighting, earthy materials, and an open yet intimate layout create a calm, almost meditative atmosphere. There is also a subtle nod to Indonesian communal dining, with several courses designed to be shared or experienced together, reinforcing a sense of connection at the table rather than a purely individual tasting format. The menu progression is exceptionally well judged. Dishes are clean, precise, and deeply thoughtful, with a strong emphasis on balance rather than excess. There is a clear respect for produce, particularly seafood and vegetables, with flavours layered carefully instead of relying on heavy sauces or overt technical theatrics. The use of herbs and produce grown on site adds both freshness and authenticity, grounding the food firmly in its local environment and giving each dish a clear sense of place. The beverage pairing is particularly strong. Rather than defaulting to predictable wines, the pairing leans into a broader, more creative spectrum, including ferments, spirits, and unexpected flavour combinations. Each drink complements the dish without overpowering it, and together they enhance the overall narrative of the menu. Service is polished, calm, and professional. The team operates with quiet confidence, explaining dishes clearly when needed while remaining attentive without hovering. Timing is excellent, and the pacing of the meal feels relaxed yet purposeful, allowing the experience to unfold naturally. Overall, Syrco BASE stands out for its restraint, clarity, and maturity. It is a restaurant that knows exactly what it wants to be and executes that vision with consistency and finesse. A deeply satisfying experience that rewards diners who appreciate subtlety, balance, and craftsmanship.

Couldn’t rave enough of our experience at Syrco BASÈ. It is one of the best dining experience that we have had. First they gave us a tour of the garden, explaining to us the different plants and how they incorporate the plants into their dishes. The entire dinner was nicely paced out and the food was really good. On top of that, the team celebrated my birthday and that really caught me by surprise! It was the best birthday meal that I had. Highly highly 200% recommend to visit here when you are in Bali, u are in for a treat!!

We chanced upon Syrco Base and decided to try their full tasting menu with cocktail and mocktail pairing. We honestly didn’t expect anything before heading there — we just knew the food would be good. But the experience went far beyond what we imagined. Before we even started eating, we were taken through different stages of their journey. The team first introduced all their herbs and ingredients, shared where they come from, and explained how they work closely with local suppliers to build a sustainable food ecosystem in Bali. Then we walked through their edible garden, learning about the herbs and flowers grown on-site. Next, we were brought into a room to enjoy four snacks and an aperitif, before moving to the chef’s table to begin the tasting menu. Before dessert, the chefs personally shared their philosophy and the sustainable vision behind the restaurant. All the dishes were made from real, fresh, local ingredients. The flavours were a beautiful mix of Western techniques with Indonesian touches — especially the herbs — creating something truly unique. The cocktail and mocktail pairings were top-notch. They even offer vegan and vegetarian tasting menus, and the staff were all wonderfully trained, explaining each dish with clarity and passion. A very interesting concept with excellent quality food. Highly recommended for travellers, and we will definitely return the next time we visit Bali.

An incredible dining experience from start to finish. We did the BASÈ Journey with Beverage Pairing, and every course was outstanding, beautifully presented, full of local flavours, and perfectly paired with creative drinks. We had the pleasure of speaking with Charlotte, who shared the story behind Syrco BASÈ and their commitment to supporting local producers to providing training and employment opportunities for graduates from Indonesian culinary schools. It’s clear this restaurant is about so much more than just exceptional food; it’s about community, sustainability and purpose. The restaurant itself is beautifully designed, with an open and engaging atmosphere. It was wonderful to watch the team prepare and plate dishes right in front of guests, a great touch that adds to the immersive experience. A huge thank you to Chef Syrco Bakker and the entire team for a truly memorable evening. We can’t wait to visit Farmhouse by Syrco in the UAE soon!

A Beautiful and Memorable Dining Experience at Syrco BASÈD From the moment I stepped into the space, I was struck by the thoughtful and unique design that seamlessly reflects the restaurant’s deep commitment to sustainability. Every detail from the interior aesthetics to the presentation of each course felt purposeful and connected to nature. What truly stood out was the brilliant new set menu curated by Chef Syrco. Each dish was a perfect harmony of locally grown ingredients and innovative cooking techniques that celebrated both flavor and sustainability. It was not just a meal, but a culinary journey that respected the land and showcased the chef’s creative vision. I thoroughly enjoyed every course, and appreciated the balance between familiarity and surprise in the flavors. The passion and intention behind each plate were evident, making the entire experience feel personal and inspiring. If you're looking for a dining experience that is not only delicious but also meaningful, I highly recommend Syrco BASÈD.

When I arrived at Syrco BASE Ubud, the experience started even before sitting down, they invited me to walk through their garden. It was beautiful to see where the ingredients actually come from, and even more special knowing that what ends up on the plate is freshly harvested just a few steps away. The food carries an unmistakable Indonesian soul, deep, familiar flavors presented in such an elegant and thoughtful way. Each dish feels like a bridge between tradition and artistry. The presentation is stunning, but not just for show, it tells a story of respect for the ingredients and the culture behind them. It’s not just dining, it’s a slow, sensory journey that connects you with nature, taste, and creativity. Truly a place that stays in your memory long after the last bite.

During our vacation in Bali, we enjoyed a wonderful evening at Syrco Basè, where everything was perfectly arranged down to the last detail! The traffic around Ubud was light, so we arrived before opening time, but that was no problem at all. We were given a warm welcome and were able to enjoy an aperitif in the bar. The aperitif and cocktail menu offers a nice variety of options, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Before taking our seats in the restaurant, we were given a tour of the garden with explanations about all the plants and herbs, some of which are used in the bar and kitchen. Like the bar, the restaurant is decorated with great taste and attention to detail, exuding tranquility and class. Naturally inspired by the local habitat. My wife and I opted for the tasting menu, where the chef more than lived up to his reputation, which we had no doubt about! As we were staying in Bali for a family vacation, our two teenage children came along too, which was a more difficult task. We had already persuaded our daughter by allowing her to choose a three-course menu from the dessert menu. However, hostess Charlotte used her charm and knowledge to convince our daughter to choose a vegetable menu, which was greatly appreciated! During dessert and digestif, the chef came to the table to ask if everything had been to our liking and took plenty of time for us. All in all, a wonderful experience in the already special Bali! Thank you for everything! Irene & René Oudesluijs
